Edward Bokenko

Edward Bokenko, 77, of Fountain Hills died here Monday, July 28, 1997.

Mr. Bokenko was born on March 15, 1920 in Elizabeth, N.J.

He was a World War II veteran and a retired manufacturing industry manager.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Dezenzo of South Bend, Ind. and Janet Ashcroft of Tempe; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private service was held in his honor.

Dale Christensen

Dale A. Christensen, 76, of Fountain Hills and Johnson Lake, Neb., died July 15, 1997 at Elwood Care Center in Nebraska where he had been a patient for one day.

Services were held July 18 at First Presbyterian Church in Kearney, Neb. He was buried at nearby Minden cemetery.

Memorials are planned to the church or the Kay Christensen Scholarship Fund at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Mr. Christensen was born March 9, 1921 to Ed and Ella (Petersen) Christensen in Minden, Neb., where he grew up and attended school.

On May 2, 1942, he married Pauline Bates in Hastings, Neb. The couple moved to Kearney in 1951 where he was employed for 35 years as a general insurance agent for Bankers Life Insurance Co.

Mr. Christensen and his wife moved to Fountain Hills in 1984 where they lived during the winter. Their summers were spent in Johnson Lake.

He was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. He also belonged to Kearney Elks Lodge 984 and Life Underwriters Association. He enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of Johnson Lake; daughters Penny Dorn, Pirth, Neb. and Sue Heller, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; brother Russell, York, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.

Adeline Nicodemus

Adeline Nicodemus, 82, of Fountain Hills died here on July 27, 1997.

Born July 8, 1915 in the Bronx, N.Y., Mrs. Nicodemus worked in telecommunications management during her career.

She had lived in Arizona for the past 15 years.

The only survivor is a daughter, Theresa Nicodemus, of Calverton, Va.

David Patrick

David "Marcy" Patrick, 35, of Fort McDowell died July 31, 1997 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North.

Born Aug. 3, 1961 at Fort McDowell, Mr. Patrick worked as an assistant chef at a restaurant.

He is survived by two brothers, Michael and Earl Patrick; and three sisters, Jeri Walema, Terri Harris and Tammy Querta.

A funeral service will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Fort McDowell Arbor. Interment will be at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

Therese M. Schill

Therese (Terri) M. Schill, 69, of Rio Verde, died Monday, Aug. 4.

Mrs. Schill, a homemaker, was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a past president of the Parish Council, St. Dominic's Mission, in Rio Verde. She was also a founding member of the choir for St. Dominic's in 1989. And she was a past president of the Women's Nine Hole Golf Association at Rio Verde Country Club.

Friends remember Mrs. Schill as active and friendly up until the day she died.

Mrs. Schill is survived by her husband, Austin of Rio Verde; one son, John; one daughter Suzanne; one stepson, Stephen; one stepdaughter, Joan Mount.; two sisters, Betty Grochala and Agnes Spickler; one brother, Michael Andrews; and eight grandchildren.

A Rosary for Mrs. Schill will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at St. Dominic's Mission (Rio Verde Community Church). Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at St. Dominic's Mission. Burial will be at the Rio Verde Columbarium.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, 85014 or the ALS Association, Valley of the Sun Chapter, 3507 N. Central Ave., Suite 202, Phoenix, 85012.

Arrangements are under the direction of Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Nicole Schloegel

Nicole Therese Schloegel, 23, of Scottsdale died Sept. 1, 1997 at The City of Hope in Los Angeles, Calif.

Born in Grosse Point, Mich., Ms. Schloegel was a student at Arizona State University.

"Nikki" moved to Arizona 12 years ago from Michigan. She died after a courageous battle with leukemia and a recent bone-marrow transplant.

She was going to graduate from ASU in December with a degree in special education. She also worked at Bandersnatch Brew Pub in Tempe.

Survivors include her fiance, Mike Bourn; parents, Jim and Sally; sisters, Rae Lynn Alfieri of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Janet McDonald of Clearwater, Fla. and Dannielle Mostrom of Edina, Minn.; brother, Michael Scott; and six nieces and nephews.

A mass was said Sept. 6 at St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church, 1030 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale.

Memorial contributions are being accepted by the Schloegel Family, c/o Bandersnatch, 125 E. 5th Street, Tempe, AZ 85281. Messinger Mortuary & Chapel of Scottsdale handled the arrangements.

Joseph Knieriemen

Joseph Knieriemen, 78, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 19, 1998 at the Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix.

Born June 23, 1920 in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Mr. Knieriemen was retired from the construction operating engineering field.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from World War II.

Mr. Knieriemen lived in Florida from 1968 to 1996 and in Colorado from 1996 to 1997. He had lived in Fountain Hills for the past year.

He was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Police Benevolent Association, as he was a retired New York police officer from Nassau County.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Knieriemen of Fountain Hills; daughter, Carole A. Alexander of Fountain Hills; son, Robert Knieriemen of Chester, Va. and three grandchildren, Matthew, Dina and Lisa.

Visitation was held Aug. 23, with a funeral service on Aug. 24 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, followed by a graveside service at the National Memorial cemetery in Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, P.O. Box 61930, Phoenix, AZ 85082 or to the Arizona Heart Institute Foundation, 2632 N. 20th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

John McGuire

John J. McGuire, 85, of Fountain Hills died March 20, 1999.

Born Sept. 25, 1913 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. McGuire worked as a grocery warehouse supervisor during his adult career.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Marian; daughters, Patricia Kirby and Lorraine Gerber, both of Las Vegas; stepchildren, JoAnn Myles of Fountain Hills and Don Marino of Scottsdale; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation and a service were held March 22 at Church of the Ascension.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Irene Baker

Irene Best Baker, 62, of Scottsdale died March 21, 1999.

Born in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Baker moved to Arizona 23 years ago from Hyattsville, Md.

She was a retired office manager of an insurance agency and a member of La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Baker was also a member of Sroptimist International of Camelback and of Insurance Women of Phoenix.

She is survived by her husband, William Paul Baker of Scottsdale; daughters Barbara Anne Perry of Phoenix and Joyce Baker Spies (F. William, husband) of Scottsdale; sons James Earle Perry (Lori, wife) of Phoenix and Eugene Lee Baker (Kimberly, wife) of Fountain Hills; sister Edna Collins (Earl, husband) of Orange City, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mrs. Baker will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, March 27, at La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church, 6300 E. Bell Road in Scottsdale.

Arrangements are being made by Messinger Mortuary and Chapel of Scottsdale.

MacKenzie Bratcher

MacKenzie Bratcher, four, of Fountain Hills, died Jan. 3 in Heyworth, Ill.

Ms. Bratcher was born March 18, 1993 in Bloomington, Ill.

She is survived by her mother, Amiee (Scheidt) Bratcher of Fountain Hills; one brother, Tyler Bratcher of Fountain Hills; grandparents, Paul and Connie Scheidt of Fountain Hills; and great-grandparents Mel and Joan Winton of Fountain Hills. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Bratcher.

A memorial service for MacKenzie Bratcher will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to J's Dance Studio Heyworth, Ill. where she attended dance classes; MacKenzie Bratcher Scholarship Fund, c/o First State Bank of Heyworth, 117 E. Main Street, Heyworth, Ill. 61745.

Dr. Michael Matthews

Dr. Michael A. Matthews, 74, died Jan. 12, 1998.

Born in Nice, France on Dec. 27, 1923, Dr. Matthews completed his medical doctorate in 1952 at Georg-August Universitat in Gottingen, Germany.

He and his wife, Silvia, emigrated to the United States in 1952. He completed his residency at Bethesda Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. They began their private medical practice in Trenton, Ohio.

Later, he became assistant medical director and then medical director of Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio.

He retired in 1989.

Dr. Matthews was very active in Boy Scouts of America and in adult scouting leadership courses. He was a recipient of the Woodbadge Award, Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver.

He was active in the Middletown Sportsman's Club as a champion trap shooter. He and Silvia moved to Fountain Hills in 1990 and joined the Fountain Hills Golf Club. He was an enthusiastic golfer and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Silvia P. Matthews; sons, Andre Matthews, M.D. of Mesa and Peter Matthews of Mesa; daughter, Mara Malins of Alexandria, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to Boy Scouts of America, 2969 N. Greenfield Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016.

A memorial service was held Jan. 16 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Geraldine Scudder

Geraldine Jeanette Scudder, a winter visitor from Marion, Ill., died Jan. 19, 1998 in Scottsdale.

Born in Huntington, Ind., she was a hospital nurse during her working career. Mrs. Scudder came to Arizona six weeks ago from Illinois.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. John Forman Scudder; three daughters, Carol Ann Clark (Gary), Sarah Lou Veneziano (John) and Suzanne Saltzman (Randy); two sons, James Lee Shillinger (Mary Ann) and John Frederick Scudder (Ava); one brother, Robert Dudley; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Robert Faber

Robert Charles Faber, 77, a resident of Michigan his entire life until retiring to Fountain Hills, died Jan. 13, 1998 after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, who passed away in May, 1997.

Mr. Faber is survived by his four children, Dan Faber of West Bloomfield, Mich., Barb Lucas of Phoenix, Ron Faber of Fountain Hills and Susan Faber of Mesa; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Letty Jacques, of West Bloomfield.

A memorial service will be held at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m.

Angeline Hanten

Angeline C. Hanten, known to her grandchildren as "Go Go," died Jan. 8, 1998 in Phoenix.

Mrs. Hanten was born in White Lake, S.D. on May 29, 1914.

She married Richard Hanten in Huron, S.D. in 1935. After residing there for many years, the couple retired and moved to Arizona in 1972.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1988.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Hanten of Fountain Hills and Dave Hanten of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private service for Mrs. Hanten was held in Fountain Hills.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Sunday, Jan. 18, at Holy Name Parish in Watertown, S.D. with interment to follow at St. Mary's cemetery.
