Rosario Plante

Rosario "Zar" Plante, 83, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 25, 1998 at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn.

Born Oct. 8, 1915 in St. Lambert, Quebec, Canada, he worked as a factory die maker during his adult career.

Mr. Plante was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member of the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Plante of Fountain Hills; and sisters, Olivette Dowd of Fountain Hills, Jeanne Cadorette of Punta Gorda, Fla., Marie Lamoureux of Worcester, Mass. and Laurence Pouliot of Fountain Hills.

Visitation was held Nov. 29 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, and a service was conducted Nov. 30 at Church of the Ascension.

Interment was at Phoenix Memorial Park.

Bernice Magiera

Bernice Magiera, 86, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 22, 1998 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born April 19, 1912 in East St. Louis, Ill., Mrs. Magiera worked as a seamstress in dress manufacturing before retiring.

Survivors include her son, Frank Magiera of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Joan Kroupa of Fountain Hills; brother, Leonard Zelechowski of Illinois; sister, Jeanette Przada of Illinois; two grandchildren, Julie Keim and Jan Kroupa; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Audrey Keim and Heather and Nicole Kroupa.

Interment was at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Illinois. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Alzheimer's Association, 2323 S. Hardy Drive, Tempe, AZ 85282.

Fern L. Holka

Fern L. Holka, 74, of Fountain Hills, died Monday, Nov. 16, in Scottsdale.

Born Sept. 17, 1924 in Kappa, Ill., Mrs. Holka moved to Fountain Hills from Dayton, Ohio in 1972. She was formerly employed in local restaurants in Fountain Hills as a waitress.

She is survived by three stepdaughters: Deborah Duckro of Fountain Hills; Nancy Urban of Westchester, Ohio; and Laura Holka of Phoenix; son-in-law Tom Urban; and five grandchildren: Nicholas Duckro, Jessica, Alex and Andrew Urban and Joey Holka.

The viewing will be Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., and the funeral will be the following morning at 10 a.m. Both will be at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Dorothy Piercefield

Dorothy Day Webster Piercefield was born in Prescott Sept. 5, 1917 and died peacefully at her Fountain Hills home Oct. 28, 1999.

Mrs. Piercefield was proud of her Arizona heritage. Her large extended family in Arizona was started by Dr. Warren E. Day, who came to Arizona in the 1870s and was a pioneer doctor in Prescott.

She graduated from Arizona State Teachers College in Flagstaff in 1943 and taught in the Phoenix Elementary School District for more than 40 years.

Education, teaching and the love for children were her passions in life. Mrs. Piercefield was a member of St. Anthony’s on the Desert Episcopal Church, PEO Chapter DZ and First Families of Arizona, an organization dedicated to Arizona pioneers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall A. Piercefield, and is survived by daughters Marsha Piercefield and Carol Willis; son, Howard Piercefield; six grandchildren; a brother, Robert Webster; and a sister, Eleanor Hatton.

Visitation will be Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Services will follow at St. Anthony’s on the Desert Episcopal Church, 12990 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, at 2 p.m.

Contributions may be sent in her memory to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Diana Woodruff

Diana Woodruff, 53, of Fountain Hills died Sunday, Oct. 31, at her home.

Mrs. Woodruff was born in Muskegon, MI and moved to Arizona 20 years ago. She was a certified Reiki Master and studying to be a holistic aroma therapist.

Mrs. Woodruff is survived by her husband, Steve, of Fountain Hills; one son, Adam Root of San Diego; one daughter, Sara Root of Atlanta; two brothers, Dick Laubach of Muskegon, MI, and Wilbur Laubach of Jackson, MI; and a sister, Doretta Juergens of Muskegon, MI.

A memorial service for Diana Woodruff was held Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Unity Church of Phoenix. Memorials may be sent to Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, NY, NY 10021.

Jim Miller

Jim Miller, 37, a self-employed printer of Fountain Hills, died Nov. 15, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Oct. 4, 1962 at Springfield, Mass., Mr. Miller was a member of Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills. His military service included a stint with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Sherryl Miller of Fountain Hills; son, Keith Miller of Fountain Hills; parents, John and Marieann Miller of Sun Lakes; brothers, Michael Miller of Paradise Valley, Martin Miller of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Neil Miller of Chandler; sisters, Kathleen Noble of Chandler, Karen Lee of Phoenix and Margret Lee of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; grandmother, Mary Ann Gothier of Sun Lakes; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Nov. 19 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortary with a funeral mass Nov. 20 at Church of the Ascension.

Gail Barringer

Gail Thorley Barringer, 47, a homemaker and former Fountain Hills resident, passed away Nov. 6, 1999 in Lakewood, Calif.

Survivors include her husband, Jay R. Barringer; son, Michael; parents, Vincent and Dorothy Cremonese of Fountain Hills and Douglas and Dorothy Thorley of Riverside, Calif.; five sisters, Lynne Harnois of Kaysville, Utah, Kerrie Bringhurst and Jan DellaVedova of New Harmony, Utah, and Susan Hixson and Michelle Smout of Fountain Hills; and 19 nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in New Harmony, Utah.

Ted Chebat

Teofyl "Ted" O. Chebat, 93, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 11, 1999 in Scottsdale.

Born Feb. 23, 1906 in Raseinai, Lithuania, Mr. Chebat came to Fountain Hills in 1977 to retire after owning a tavern in Chicago, Ill. for many years.

A furniture maker by trade, Mr. Chebat spent many of his retirement years building furniture for family and friends out of his home-based wood shop.

He was a member of Church of the Ascension.

Survivors include his son, Don (Mary Ann) Chebat; three grandchildren, Don, Terri and Bob; two great-grandchildren, Tanya and Heather; one great-great-grandchild, Allizay; and a brother, Tel, of Florida.

A private family service was held at Messenger Fountain Hills Mortuary on Nov. 12.

Matt DeClercq

Matthew N. DeClercq, 46, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 13 of pancreatic cancer. As a Rural/Metro firefighter, Mr. DeClercq worked in Rio Verde, Fountain Hills and most recently in Scottsdale.

Mr. DeClercq was born in San Diego, Calif. He is survived by his wife, Lori, two daughters Nicolle DeClercq and Dori Baudhuin of Phoenix, one granddaughter, Samantha Baudhuin and two stepchildren, Chris and Lindsey Brendemuhl of Fountain Hills.

He is also survived by his mother, Rae DeClercq of Vista, Calif.; three sisters, Barbara DeClercq of San Diego, Joy Hubbard of Fountain Hills and Kitti Freitag of Escondido, Calif.; and two brothers, Henri DeClercq of San Diego and Len DeClercq of Evanston, Wyoming.

Mr. DeClercq lived a full life, according to family. He graduated from Santana High School in Santee, Calif. in 1971 where he set school and state records in track and cross-country. He enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War and he lived and worked for a time in San Diego upon receiving an honorable discharge.

Mr. DeClercq moved his family to Wyoming where he became involved with the Riverton Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter.

Scuba diving, camping and fishing were among his favorite activities. When not on duty as a firefighter Mr. DeClercq offered his services as a handyman around Fountain Hills.

On May 1, 1999 Mr. DeClercq received the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Michael J. McGivney Award for Public Safety and Outstanding Community Service. He has touched many lives with his love and humanitarianism.

Visitation for Matt DeClercq will be held Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 6914 E. Bella Vista Drive, Cave Creek.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 18, at 10 a.m. at Scottsdale Bible Chapel, 79th Street and Shea Blvd., Scottsdale.

Mat Schneider

Mat Schneider of Fountain Hills died on Nov. 11, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea. He was 49.

Mr. Schneider was born on Feb. 5, 1950 in San Rafael, Calif. and was employed as a restaurant owner.

He is survived by his wife, Janine of Fountain Hills; a son, Jesse, also of Fountain Hills; and a daughter, Ceia of Homer, Alaska.

A memorial service for Mr. Schneider will be held this Saturday, Nov. 20, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 13770 N. Fountain Hills Boulevard.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Liver Foundation, 998 Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove, N.J., 07009.

Mary Piper

Mary E. Piper, 75, of Fountain Hills died here on Nov. 11, 1999.

Born Aug. 22, 1924 in Akron, Ohio, Piper was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II and later was a self-employed accountant.

She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels programs in Fountain Hills as well as a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey J. Burton (Jan) and Richard E. Burton, both of Chandler, Ariz.; three daughters, Marie McDonald-Frame (Niel) of Golden, Colo., Christie K. Burton of White Lake, Mich. and Dana D. Burton-Arning of Walled Lake, Mich.; a brother, John P. Peard of Rush City, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. yesterday at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Mary Piper Memorial Fund, 1411 W. Temple Plaza in Chandler, Ariz., 85224.

Nina Rice

Nina L. Rice, 83, of Rio Verde died on Nov. 12, 1999.

Born on Jan. 31, 1916 in Athelston, Iowa, Rice was employed as a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughters, Muriel Witt and Elaine Szalay both of Rio Verde; three brothers, Gerald Walston of Jefferson, Iowa, Elvin Walston of Bedford, Iowa and Marvin Walston of Waverly, Iowa; two sisters, Hazel Hoover of Rio Verde and Elise Preston of Lenox, Iowa; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers Donald, Vance and Verle Walston and sisters Pearl May and Cora Sue Walston.

A memorial service for Nina Rice was held yesterday at Rio Verde Community Church. Interment was scheduled to take place at Crown Hill cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street in Phoenix, 85014-5669.

Adrien Paris

Adrien J. Paris of Fountain Hills died on Nov. 3, 1999 at a Scottsdale Hospital. He was 65.

Mr. Paris was born Aug. 22, 1934 in Goffstown, N.H. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1956 and was the retired owner and operator of an auto repair center.

Mr. Paris was a founding member of the New England Vintage Thunderbird Club, the Time Travelers Car Club and the Arizona Chapter of Vintage Thunderbirds.

Mr. Paris was also a member of the Mercedes Benz Car Club of Arizona, the Uncanoonic Mountaineers Snowmobile Club of Goffstown, the Better Business Bureau of New Hampshire and the Goffstown Men’s Bowling League.

Survivors include his wife, Ann, of Fountain Hills; five daughters, Deena Paris of New Boston, N.H., Lea Devriendt of Goffstown, Karen DeYoung, Lauri Young and Audrey Kanik all of New Boston; nine grandchildren; a brother, Alfred Paris of Manchester, N.H.; a step mother, Yvonne Paris of Bedford, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.

A service for Mr. Paris was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, 1999 at Church of the Ascension. An interment took place at Mount Calvary cemetery in Manchester, N.H.

Donations in his memory can be made to The Scott Goudreault Memorial Scholarship in care of The Uncanoonic Mountaineers at P.O. Box 486 in Goffstown, N.H., 03045.

Darlene Swensen

Darlene Swensen, 48, of Fountain Hills died on Nov. 4, 1999 in Scottsdale.

Born March 4, 1951 in Mound, Minn., Mrs. Swensen was a self-employed homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene Swensen of Fountain Hills, and a brother, Robert Ebert of Wayzata, Minn.

A memorial gathering for Mrs. Swensen will be held at 10 a.m. today, Nov. 10, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Boulevard.

Ruth Bemis

Ruth May Bemis, 92, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 21, 1999.

Born in Staples, Minn., Mrs. Bemis was a retired assembly worker in the Pontiac Motor Division. She also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pontiac, Mich.

Mrs. Bemis moved to Arizona one year ago from Michigan.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Holliday, and son-in-law, Phillip Holliday; five sisters, Della Miller, Esther Osman, Hazel Miller, Irma Murphy and Dorothy Doolittle; and a brother, Lloyd Johnson.

A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2000 in Michigan.

Messinger Mortuary & Chapel in Scottsdale handled the arrangements.
