Elaine Smith
Elaine Louise Smith, 71, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 23, 1999.
Born Aug. 29, 1928 in Eau Claire, Wis., Mrs. Smith was a very loving and caring wife, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
She was a graduate of Chippewa Falls High School and attended the University of Wisconsin. Mrs. Smith also was a member of Scottsdale Bible Church and was employed at Corporate Minutes Made before retiring.
Survivors include her husband Dale Smith of Fountain Hills; daughters, Debbie Lind (Gordon) of Appleton, Wis. and Nancy Moulton (Allen) of Eau Claire, Wis.; mother, Louise Schoyen of Rice Lake, Wis.; brother, Larry O’Donnell of Green Bay, Wis.; and five grandchildren, Andy, Jenny Lind, Danny, Deanne and Debbie.

`Jack' Darby
John U. "Jack" Darby of Fountain Hills died Sept. 17, 1998 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.
He was 83.
Born July 18, 1915 in Long Beach, Calif., Mr. Darby retired as a regional manager for Pacific Bell Telephone Co., where he worked for 44 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II and a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margueritte Darby of Fountain Hills; son, John (Georgina) Darby of California; daughters Diane Darby of San Luis Obispo, Calif. and Kathy Levine of La Jolla, Calif.; sister, Shirley (Arnold) Iaace of Carson City, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The family suggests contributions be given in his memory to the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.
Franklin Donaldson
Franklin Lars Donaldson, 73, of Phoenix died Sept. 16, 1998 in Scottsdale.
Born in Hammond, La., Mr. Donaldson moved to Arizona 26 years ago from Virginia.
He was retired as a radio and television announcer for KPHO of Phoenix. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Mr. Donaldson also was director of planned giving for the Southwest Division of Salvation Army, was a member of the Scottsdale Boys and Girls Clubs and was a former announcer in New Orleans.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia R. Donaldson of Phoenix; brother, Reid Benton Donaldson; and he had many family and friends living in Fountain Hills.
A memorial service was held Sept. 21. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church, 6715 N. Mockingbird Lane, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.

Vivian Basche
Vivian E. Basche, 87, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 29, 1998 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.
Born Nov. 27, 1910 in Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Basche worked in retail sales and the clothing industry during her adult career.
She was a member of Church of the Ascension.
Survivors include her sons, Anthony R. (Roberta) Basche of Fountain Hills, and Robert C. (Susan) Basche of W. Norwalk, Conn.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills.

Stephen Klayner
Stephen Klayner, 90, died Aug. 4, 1998 at Springdale West in Mesa.
Born Dec. 20, 1907 in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mr. Klayner was a postal worker during his career.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Klayner of Fountain Hills; brother, Anthony Klayner; and sisters, Mary Abe and Frances Pilin.
A graveside service was held Aug. 7 at St. Francis cemetery in Phoenix.
Rev. Dr. Kenneth L. Maxwell
The Rev. Dr. Kenneth L. Maxwell, 85, of Fountain Hills died of natural causes Aug. 15, 1998 at the Life Care Center of Scottsdale.
A memorial service was held Aug. 29 at the Valley Presbyterian Church Kilgore Chapel in Paradise Valley.
Another service honoring Dr. Maxwell will be held Oct. 3, 1998 at the American Baptist Assembly and Conference Center in Green Lake, Wis. Until his death Dr. Maxwell was the last living founder of the Baptist Center. His remains will be scattered there in the Memory Garden.
Kenneth Leroy Maxwell was born May 26, 1913, in Wilkinsburg, Pa., where he spent his childhood. He was united in marriage to Miriam Young in 1938, to Jean Carlson in 1942 and to Mary McGraw Kessler in 1985. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Miriam and his wife Jean.
He earned a B.A. degree from Denison University, Granville, Ohio, in 1938; and a M.Div. from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y. in 1938.
He spent 1939 at Cambridge University in England as a Fullbright Scholar and in 1953 earned a Ph.D. in New Testament at Yale University. He was Phi Beta Kappa and is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American West and Who's Who in History.
Dr. Maxwell served American Baptist Churches as pastor in Granville, Ohio and Stratford and Hartford, Conn. He was a charter member of Christ Congregation in Princeton, N.J. in 1956.
He was instrumental in developing the United Nations Association of the USA and was president for the state of New Jersey, the Greater Phoenix Chapter and the state of Arizona chapter. He traveled worldwide speaking at conferences concerning peace.
From 1955 to 1966 Dr. Maxwell served as executive director of the Department of International Affairs of the National Council of Churches, during which time he served as a consultant to the World Council of Churches. He was an accredited representative to the United Nations and to the United States Mission to the U.N.
Among his writings, he co-edited the Dag Hammerskjold Memorial Lecture Series, "Paths to World Order." As a graduate research fellow at Princeton University he authored a book dealing with politics, religion and peace titled "Seek Peace and Pursue It."
As professor of public administration at Rider College in New Jersey, Dr. Maxwell introduced the graduate program in public administration. He moved to Arizona in 1994, where he was an adjunct professor of political science and international relations for Arizona State University, the Life Long Learning Center in Sun City and for the Graduate School of International Management in Glendale.
In 1991 Dr. Maxwell was awarded the "Ecumenical Service Award" by the American Baptist Churches of the USA. In 1993 he received the "National Leadership Award" by the American Baptist Assembly and Conference Center in Green Lake, Wis.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Fountain Hills; a son, M. Kenneth Maxwell and wife Chris of Las Cruces, N.M.; daughters, Carol Kolsti and husband John of Austin, Texas; and Elizabeth Maxwell and husband Kurt Roth of Princeton, N.J.
Also by step-sons Jeff Kessler and wife Kristine of Ankeny, Iowa, Preston Kessler and wife Peggy of Springfield, Mo., and David Kessler of Scottsdale; step-daughters, Connie Wyrostek and husband Vincent of Albany, Ore., and Kathryn Kessler and husband Bryan Eells of Coppell, Texas; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and friends worldwide.
Ann Szeliga
Ann Matilda Szeliga, 82, died Aug. 31, 1998 at her Fountain Hills home.
Born Aug. 24, 1916 in Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Szeliga was retired from the field of market research.
She and Joseph Szeliga were married Sept. 3, 1955, and they moved to Fountain Hills in November of 1984.
Mrs. Szeliga was the unofficial "meals on wheels" before the service existed in Fountain Hills. She regularly prepared and delivered meals to Fountain Hills residents who could could not regularly cook dinner themselves.
She was an avid bunco and bingo player, and was considered to be very good hearted and generous. Husband Joe says "she's playing pinochle with the angels."
Survivors include her husband, Joseph M. Szeliga of Fountain Hills; daughter, Joyce Ann Szeliga of Fountain Hills; granddaughter, Joanna Marie; son-in-law, Jim Wilson of Fountain Hills; sister, Lucille O'Malley of Chicago; brothers, Bill Joyce of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and Bob Joyce of Chicago; sister-in-law, Jean Troy of Chicago; and the entire Que Bueno family.
Visitation will be held at Messinger's Fountain Hills Mortuary Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 2 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service is set for Thursday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. at Messinger's, corner of Saguaro Blvd. and Colony Drive.

Matthew Winkel
Matthew Jack Winkel, 85, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 29, 1998 at Veterans Hospital in Phoenix.
Born Dec. 28, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio, he worked as a copper mining manager during his adult career. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from World War II.
Mr. Winkel was a graduate of the Notre Dame University in 1935 and was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Hester Winkel of Fountain Hills; sons, Matthew J. (Ester) Winkel Jr. of Oregon, and Robert Winkel of San Diego, Calif.; step-daughter, Allida R. (Frederick) Avery of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.
Betty Tripp
Betty Kiser Tripp, 77, died in Las Vegas on Thanksgiving Day.
A resident of Fountain Hills since 1973, Mrs. Tripp was a founding member of the Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Fountain Hills Women’s Club.
She more recently served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Special Transportation Service of Fountain Hills.
Mrs. Tripp was born in Springfield, Ill. and educated at MacMurray College and the University of Illinois.
Preceded in death by her husband, she is survived by her son Bruce, daughter-in-law Sherry and three grandsons, Cameron, Preston and Madison.
A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church at a date to be announced. Interment will be in Belvidere, Ill.
Bill Carroll
William "Bill" Carroll, 55, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 10, 1999.
Born Nov. 6, 1944 in Stevenson, Ala., Mr. Carroll had worked in the high tech plumbing inspection field.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, of Fountain Hills; daughter, Kim Huchel of Telluride, Colo.; sons, James Carroll (Angela) of Fountain Hills, and Ken Huche of Mesa; mother, Mildred Carroll of Bridgeport, Ala.; sisters, Martha Lehr, Georgia Talley and Mildred Sawyer, all of Alabama; and a brother, Johnny Carroll of Alabama.
Visitation was held Dec. 13 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, with a service Dec. 14 at Christ’s Church of Fountain Hills.

Douglas Frost
Colonel Douglas H. "Jack" Frost, USAF (Ret.), passed away Dec. 5, 1999 at the age of 79.
Born in Vernon, Texas on Nov. 27, 1920, he was raised in Farmers Valley, Texas and attended Texas Tech University.
Col. Frost began his 30-year military career during World War II as a navigator on B-24 bombers flying combat missions in the South Pacific. He entered pilot training after World War II and later commanded both bomber and fighter squadrons.
Col. Frost flew over 100 combat missions in the F-4 Phantom during the Vietnam War. His affiliation with the "River Rats" was a source of pride for him for the remainder of his life. He was recently active in Dadelians.
He later served in the test pilot program at Edwards Air Force Base and finished his career in 1972 as the base commander of Nellis AFB.
Col. Frost’s retirement years were filled with activity, working as a trans-oceanic ferry pilot. At the age of 78, he made his final flight, delivering an Air Tractor from Spain to South America, crossing the Andes enroute. He enjoyed his winters in Arizona and summers in New Hampshire in a never-ending quest to win money from fellow golfers.
Col. Frost was married to Louise Champagne for 32 years and is the father of six – Doug Jr., Fountain Hills; David of Los Angeles, Calif.; Danielle of Houston, Texas; Dennis of Concord, N.H.; Danica of St. Louis, Mo.; and Dominique Parker of Houston.
He will be especially missed by his four loving grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Georgia Duke of Salinas, Calif., Tharon Aulds of Vernon, Texas; Daris Simmonds of Arlington, Texas; and a brother, Jack, of Vernon, Texas. He was loved by many and will be missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Hampshire Veterans’ Home in Tilton, N.H. 03276.
Visitation was held Dec. 10 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Services were held Dec. 11 at the Luke AFB Chapel.
Rosemary Auble
Rosemary Lintz Auble, 84, of Fountain Hills and formerly of St. Louis, Mo., died Dec. 15, 1999.
Beloved wife of the late Clifford Auble, Rosemary was born Dec. 24, 1914 to Steve and Mae Lintz. She was a member of the American Red Cross during World War II and also volunteered for Bundles for Britain.
Rosemary also served as secretary of the League of Women Voters and secretary of the Minneapolis Boys Club. She was involved at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton, Ill. and with Scottsdale Memorial Healthcare.
In later years she was a member of the Fountain Hills Women’s Club.
Rosemary will be greatly missed by her family, her church, her community and by a host of friends.

Dorothy Gooden
Dorothy F. Gooden of Fountain Hills died on Dec. 16, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea. She was 86.
Born July 22, 1913 in Denver, Ms. Gooden was a homemaker and member of the Baptist Church of Fountain Hills as well as the Women’s Craft Club of Fountain Hills.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Westbrook (Donna) of Fountain Hills and Donald Westbrook of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, Robert Dugan of Denver; two sisters, Jean Cribs of Monument, Colo. and Maxine Bartlette of Greely, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Ms. Gooden was held yesterday, Dec. 21, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.
Interment was planned for Chapel Hill cemetery in Littleton, Colo.
