Patricia Stevens

Patricia A. Stevens, 64, of Fountain Hills died Feb. 12, 1999 in Scottsdale.

Born Feb. 28, 1934 in Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. Stevens was administrative director of the Arizona Structural Pest Control Commission.

Survivors include her mother, Esther Lloyd of Fountain Hills; sons, Mark L. Stevens of Sisters, Ore.; daughter, Jennifer L. Stevens of Fountain Hills; and two grandchildren, Tiffany Stevens of Fountain Hills and Nicole Stevens of Bend, Ore.

Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service, which is scheduled 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Interment will be at Paradise Memorial Gardens.

Katherine Smith

Katherine L. "Audda" Smith, 19, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community died July 6, 1999 in Phoenix.

Born May 22, 1980 in Phoenix, Ms. Smith was a member of the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church and the Indian Community.

Survivors include her parents, Gary D. and Pauline E. Smith, Fort McDowell; sisters, Felicia L., Sylvia L. and Andrea D. Smith of Fort McDowell; grandparents, Vincent and Priscilla Smith of Fort McDowell and Paul and Beverly Frances Smith of Scottsdale; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation was held Sunday, July 11, with a service Monday morning at the Fort McDowell Recreation Center. Interment will be at Fort McDowell cemetery.

Cy Blasing

Cyril "Cy" Blasing, 90, of Fountain Hills died May 29, 1999 in Scottsdale.

Born May 3, 1909 in Rochester, Minn., Mr. Blasing worked as an electrical engineer in the public utility industry.

A graduate of Purdue University in 1931, Mr. Blasing was an original member of The Club in Fountain Hills. He also served on the Sanitary District Board of Directors in the 1980s.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Blasing; daughters, Carol Mannes (Harl) of Fountain Hills and Bette Sutton (Rick) of Littleton, Colo.; sister, Gladys Peterson of Rochester; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Richard in 1985.

A private service was held.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the A.S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 33334, Phoenix, AZ 85067.

Leokadia Diakonow

Leokadia Diakonow of Fountain Hills died here June 7, 1999. She was 76.

Mrs. Diakonow was born Aug. 20, 1922 in Wilno, Litwinia, and she worked as a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Peter; a son, Theodore (Theresa) of Chicago; daughters Irene Czech (Jerzy) of Fountain Hills, Krystyna Plonka of Chicago, Maria Diakonow of Wroclaw, Poland; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A visitation for Mrs. Diakonow will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, June 10, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, located at 12065 N. Saguaro Boulevard, with rosary at 5 p.m.

A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 11, at Our Lady of Czestochowa, 6530 N. 7th Street in Phoenix.

The family suggests contributions be made to Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

Stanley Tokarczyk

Stanley Tokarczyk, 72, of Fountain Hills died on June 2, 1999.

Mr. Tokarczyk moved here from Cleveland.

He is survived by children John Gratz, Mary Kay Mezak, Therese Barnhart, Carolyn Radykovic, Brian Gratz and Maureen Gratz as well as 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Tokarczyk will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, at the Church of the Ascension.

Tony Campanelli

Anthony "Tony" Campanelli, 67, of Fountain Hills died here on May 30, 1999.

Born Jan. 4, 1932 in Valenzano, Bari, Italy, Mr. Campanelli sold machinery and was a metal works consultant.

He was also a Korean War veteran, where he served in the U.S. Navy, and a member of the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; sons, Louis of Mesa and Mark of Richmond, Calif.; a daughter, Cathy Grow (Dennis) of Glendale, Calif..; brothers Joe (Jean) of North Hollywood, Calif. and Rocky (Rosanne) of Valenzano, Italy; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Campanelli was preceded in death by his brother, Frank, and sister, Porzia Campanelli.

A funeral mass for Mr. Campanelli was held June 2 at Church of the Ascension followed by interment at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

The family suggests contributions be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at 1275 York Ave. in New York, N.Y., 10021, Scottsdale Memorial Health Foundation, Hospice Services Fund, 7400 E. Osborn Rd. in Scottsdale, 85251 or to any veteran organization.

Jacque Van Gieson

Jacque E. Van Gieson, a long-time Fountain Hills resident, died May 27, 1999 at Life Care Center in Scottsdale.

Born Nov. 8, 1918 in Geneva, N.Y., Mr. Van Gieson graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan and was a major in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In 1943 Mr. Van Gieson married Jane Rosing, and they were married for 50 years before her death. In 1994 he married Elsie Johnson.

Mr. Van Gieson retired in 1981 after 35 years of service with Eastman Kodak and moved to Fountain Hills.

He was a choir member at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, was an avid golfer and was a volunteer at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital for 17 years.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie, Fountain Hills; son, Jacque F. Van Gieson (Joan); daughter, Diane Burlingame (Milt); grandchildren Carrie Braun (Ralph); Gretchen Van Gieson; Josee LaBar (Larry); Gwen Van Gieson; and great-grandchildren Carly Jane and Jane Leigh; step-children, Bev Rust (Terry) and Bobbi Kauffman (Ken); and many friends.

A memorial service was held June 4 at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Mr. Van Gieson’s name to the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church Music Fund, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Walter Seyffert

Walter Jay Seyffert, 67, of Fountain Hills died on June 3, 1999 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix.

Born Sept. 25, 1931 in Chicago, Mr. Seyffert was a retired computer consultant, U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Casa Homeowner’s Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby; three daughters, Mari Fennell, Nanci Ahern and Lauri Speirs; one son, Walter; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. this Sunday, June 13, at St. Anthony’s on the Desert, located at 12990 E. Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale.

Contributions can be made to the Walter J. Seyffert memorial fund and sent to St. Anthony’s Church.

Dixie Davis

Dixie Davis, 57, of Fort McDowell died June 24, 1999 in Phoenix.

Born May 12, 1942 in Phoenix, Mrs. Davis was a retired political lobbyist.

She is survived by two sons, Eric Murdock of Los Angeles and Richard Troy Carmelo of Fort McDowell; four daughters, Roann Carmelo, Liela Kill, Juanita Carmelo and Kimberly Williams, all of Fort McDowell; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A service for Mrs. Davis was held June 29 at Fort McDowell Arbor followed by interment at Fort McDowell cemetery.

John Evans

John Evans of Fountain Hills died June 24, 1999 at Life Care Center of Scottsdale. He was 78.

Born Aug. 3, 1920 in Teny, England, Mr. Evans worked as an engineer for Ford Tractors.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Evans; a daughter, Marian Preshern of Troy, Mich.; two step daughters, Donna Lanam and Suzanne Lenard both of California; three brothers, Sam, Horace and Gordon Evans; two sisters, Joyce Spence and Sally Bridger of England; and two grandchildren.

Interment for Mr. Evans was planned to take place at White Chapel cemetery in Troy, Mich.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer Association, 1028 E. McDowell Road in Phoenix, 85006.

Ted Hamilton

Ted Hamilton, 81, of Fountain Hills died June 22, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Feb. 1, 1918 in Chicago, Ill., he worked as a general manager in the automobile industry before retiring.

Mr. Hamilton also was veteran from the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his daughters, Diane Kalis of Rio Verde and Karen (Ray) Anderson of Story, Wyo.; sister, Victoria Stangran of California; and two grandchildren, William (Claire) Hamilton Croutch and Derek Croutch.

Visitation was held June 24 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. A memorial service will be held in Chicago, Ill., with interment at Maryhill cemetery in Chicago.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Humane Society, 9226 N. 13th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85021.

Randy Jones

Randy "J-Bar" Jones, 41, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community, died June 24, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Nov. 3, 1957 in Phoenix, Mr. Jones was a driller/blaster who worked on highway construction. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Jones, Fort McDowell; parents, Gilbert and Evangeline "Angie" Jones, Fort McDowell; in-laws, Wes and Helen Labbe, Show Low; daughter, Brianna M. Jones, Fort McDowell; brothers, Johnnie G. Jones, Sylvester (Bonnie) Jones, Duane B. (Cornelia) Jones and Gilbert (Veronica) Jones Jr., all of Fort McDowell; sisters, Lois Burke, Velma Jones, Sharon Dolan, Karen M. Jones and Harlene K. (Vernon) Bullis, all of Fort McDowell; and one grandchild, Lucy A. Sanchez.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 1, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Jones from 5 p.m. to Friday morning; a service will be held Friday, July 2, at 8 a.m. at the Fort McDowell Recreation Center.

Interment will be at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

Lorraine Phinn

Lorraine Phinn, 72, of Fountain Hills, died June 18, 1999, after a prolonged illness.

Final rites were held Tuesday, June 22, at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church.

A native New Yorker who, along with her husband Eric, retired to Arizona in 1992, Mrs. Phinn was formerly a probation officer in Manhattan. Her husband died in 1997.

She was chair of the Lakeview Democratic Zone Committee, of the Nassau Democratic County Committee and served as a commissioner on the Long Island State Park Recreation and Historic Preservation Commission. She was an active member of the New York State Black Caucus.

Born Eleanor Lorraine St. Clair Potter on Jan. 29, 1927 in New York City, she was a graduate of Girls’ High School and Brooklyn College where she received a B.A. degree in sociology-anthropology.

In addition to her political interests, Mrs. Phonon was involved with tracing her family’s roots in the Caribbean. The Phinns made numerous trips to the West Indies where they carried out genealogical research.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, David and Patricia Potter, of Calumet City, Ill.; a nephew, Joel David Jon Potter, of Des Moines, Iowa; and a host of friends.

Gifts in her memory may be made to St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church, 12990 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ. 85259.

Urmila Patel

Urmila Patel, 54, of Fountain Hills died May 21, 1999 in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Born Nov. 21, 1944 in Naminaje, Uganda, Mrs. Patel was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Rajnikant Patel, of Fountain Hills; mother, Chanchal Patel, of London, United Kingdom; son, Sameer Patel, Fountain Hills; daughter, Malini Patel, Fountain Hills; brothers, Yogesh Patel (Niranjana), London; Mahendra Patel (Sushila), London; Arvind Patel (Harsha), London; Pravin Patel (Asmita), London; Jayanti Patel, London; and sisters, Virbala Patel, London; Indu Patel (Kumar), London; and Gita Patel (Dhirajlal), London.

A visitation and service were held May 30 at the family residence in Fountain Hills.
