Bertha Chernich

Bertha Virginia Chernich, 77, of Fountain Hills died June 11, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.

Born Aug. 1, 1921 in Portsmouth, Va., Mrs. Chernich was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Ascension.

She is survived by her husband, John Chernich of Fountain Hills; daughters, Mary Clet Satterwhite of Phillips, Wis. and Anne Marie Hempelman of Peoria; sister, Eileen Cramer of Virginia Beach, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., with a Rosary to be said at 8 p.m. A service will be held Monday, June 21, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Ascension.

Interment will be at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

The family suggests memorial contributions in the name of Bertha Chernich be given to Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

"Buck" Salter

E.R. "Buck" Salter, 79, a long-time resident of Fountain Hills, died June 8, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.

Born June 25, 1919 in Greeley, Neb., Mr. Salter was a retired real estate broker.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mr. Salter was an active member of The Club in Fountain Hills and served in various clubs such as the Elks, Kiwanis, Shriners and Masons; Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion; Nifty Niners; Jolly Boys; and was former president of the Craig, Colo. Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Salter of Fountain Hills; daughters, Sari L. Cobb (Chuck) of Craig, and Jennifer L. Eiffert (Sam) of Phoenix; brother, Harold Salter (Georgia) of Medford, Ore.; sisters, Edna Thompson (Bob) of Laramie, Wyo., and Dorothy Lyons (Corky) of Grand Junction, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Tony Cobb (Mandi) and Morgan Cobb.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Scottsdale Healthcare Hospice, 5111 N. Scottsdale Rd., suite 275, Scottsdale, AZ 85250-7077.

Joan Enos

Joan Enos, 70, a former chairperson of the Fort McDowell Indian Community, died April 27, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Hospital.

Born March 16, 1929 at Fort McDowell, she had been employed with various human service agencies within the Fort McDowell Community such as elderly programs, foster care and social services.

She had attended the University of Arizona and was a member and pianist for the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church.

Besides a former tribal chair, she also was a retired member of the North American Indian Women’s Association.

She is survived by her husband, Russell Enos; sons, Daniel Gashwytewa, Dawawunima Delacruz and Michael Gashwytewa; daughters, Carol Kimble, Allyson Harry, Jennifer Dorchester, Madeline Enos and Monica Thompson; brothers, Vincent J. Smith and Simon Looking Elk; sisters, Leonardine Walker, Elizabeth Norris and Barbara Charging; and 27 grandchildren.

Visitation was held April 29 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, with a service April 30 at the Fort McDowell Arbor. Interment was at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 18513, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

Peggy Meenes

Margarette "Peggy" Meenes, 94, formerly of Fountain Hills, died Thursday, April 29, 1999 at Springdale West in Mesa.

Born Oct. 18, 1904 at MacIntyre Lake, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, Mrs. Meenes was a retired food services director for State Mutual Life Assurance Co. in Worchester, Mass.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth D. Snow (Shirley) of Fountain Hills; two granddaughters, Cathy Wrigley (Craig) of Huntersville, N.C., and Linda Miritello (Scott) of Mesa; two great-grandchildren, Amber Wrigley and Jesse Miritello; and a sister, Evelyn Hills of South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by husband Mendel Meenes and grandson Jeffrey Snow as well as two brothers and two sisters.

A private service was held.

June Parke

June Maude Parke, 81, a winter visitor to Fountain Hills for the past 18 years, died May 18, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born June 5, 1917 in Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Parke worked as a registered nurse during her adult career.

A resident of Howell, Mich., Mr. Parke was a member of the Mesa Country Club, Elkette No. 2168 in Howell and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Howell.

Survivors include her husband, John P. Parke of Howell; sons, John Parke Jr. (Tracy) of Howell; James H. Parke (Lisa) of Howell; daughters, Jacqulyne Botticelli (Angelo) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Nancy J. Pennell (Charles) of Howell, Janet S. Itsell (Finley) of Fountain Hills, and Julie M. Parke (David) of Modesto, Calif.; a sister, Caroline English of Orlando, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard, Joseph Parke.

Memorial services were to be held in Howell, Mich.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th St., Phoenix, AZ 85282 or to the American Diabetes Foundation, 9034 N. 23rd Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85021.

Bob Geissler Sr.

Robert "Bob" Geissler Sr., 66, of Scottsdale died May 7, 1999.

Born in Paterson, N.J., Mr. Geissler worked as a water systems operator for the City of Phoenix before retiring.

Survivors include his daughter, Deborah Geissler of Tucson; a son, Robert J. Geissler Jr. of Bloomfield, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation and services were held May 11 at Messinger Mortuary and Chapel in Scottsdale.

John Kenny

John Kenny, 66, of Fountain Hills died April 20, 1999.

Mr. Kenny was born May 18, 1932 in New York, N.Y. He was a retired police officer and later worked as a security officer for Motorola in Phoenix.

Mr. Kenny served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion, Post 44, and BPOE Elks in Scottsdale.

He also was a member of Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

Mr. Kenny is survived by his wife, Denise Kenny of Fountain Hills; a son, William J. Kenny of New City, N.Y.; a daughter, Sheila Beck of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a brother, Stephen Kenny of Keene, N.H.; a sister, Mary Crosby of Bayside, N.Y.; five grandchildren; two daughters, Patricia Ryan of Highland Falls, N.Y. and Eileen Johns of Belchertown, Mass.; and he was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Kenny.

A visitation and vigil service were held April 21 at Messinger Mortuary, with a memorial Mass April 22 at Church of the Ascension.

In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting donations to Scottsdale Home Health Services, 5111 N. Scottsdale Road, Ste. 275, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.

James Giarrusso

James Nicola Giarrusso, 63, of Fountain Hills died April 20, in Phoenix.

Mr. Giarrusso was born Jan. 28, 1935 at Providence, RI, the son of Giovanni and Mariannina (Pompa) Giarrusso.

Mr. Giarrusso is survived by his wife Dianna; four daughters, Holly Layon, Lizann Balnkship, Jamie Giarrusso and Natalia Giarrusso; two brothers, Orlando Giarrusso and Joe Giarrusso; two sisters, Jackie Punch and Jeannette Lusignan; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Giarrusso will be held Wednesday, April 28, at 6 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills, 12615 Fountain Hills Boulevard.

Church pastor Fr. Thomas O’Dea will officiate.

Sunrise Funeral Home in Prescott Valley was in charge of arrangements with assistance from Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Joseph Brown

Joseph Ernest Brown, 78, an early pioneer of multi-family development in Fountain Hills, died April 5, 1999.

Born March 20, 1921 in Duncomb, Iowa, Mr. Brown graduated from Corpus Christi High School and served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps as a pilot. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945.

Mr. Brown started his own construction business in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1947. He opened Joe Brown Realty in 1954.

He eventually moved to Fountain Hills and continued to share his talents here for 27 years. He officially "retired" Jan. 1, 1999.

Mr. Brown was involved with the construction of several large multi-unit developments in Fountain Hills during its early stages of growth, including La Casa Cafetal and La Vida Buena.

A 45-year member of Lions Club International, Mr. Brown was past president of Lions clubs in Iowa and Arizona and drafted the charter for the Fountain Hills Lions Club.

Mr. Brown was an active member of The Club, a men’s organization in town.

He was a member of the Church of the Ascension building committee, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, helped with the Bishop’s Relief Fund and was an avid blood donor, having given more than 16 gallons of blood over the years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marjorie; daughter and son-in-law, Lou Rae and David King; two grandchildren, Stacy and David Joseph; and two brothers, Dan of Fort Dodge and Maurice of Colorado Springs.

A Memorial Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, at Church of the Ascension Roman Catholic Church, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd. Interment will be at Veterans Memorial cemetery in Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the building fund at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Bill Gordon

William T. "Bill" Gordon, 78, died March 27, 1999 at his daughter’s home in Albuquerque, N.M.

He spent his winters in Fountain Hills.

Mr. Gordon was born May 30, 1920 at Cedar Rapids, Neb., the son of James B. and Louise (Van Ackeren) Gordon.

He grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School.

Mr. Gordon was a U.S. Army veteran from World War II. During his years of service he was a Normandy commission D-Day member; served with the Eighth Air Force in the Battle of the Bulge; and fought in two North African campaigns and five European campaigns. He was honorably discharged having attained the rank of major.

He was united in marriage to Daphne M. "Bobbe" Smith Nov. 28, 1942 at Cheyenne, Wyo. Mr. Gordon formed a partnership with his father-in-law, Rod Smith, and his brothers, Evan and Don Smith, named S.E. Smith and Sons Lumber Company, with several locations in Nebraska.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119, both of St. Paul; V.F.W. Post 854 of Fremont; Elks Lodge No. 604 of Grand Island; Knights of Columbus Council No. 1312 of Greeley; 40 & 8; St. Paul Chamber of Commerce; Blair Chamber of Commerce; and golf clubs in St. Paul, Fremont and Fountain Hills.

Mr. Gordon was a benefactor to many local causes and charities and put numerous students through college.

He is survived by his wife, Daphne "Bobbe" Gordon of St. Paul; three daughters, Judith Gordon of Albuquerque, N.M., Debby Imes and husband Leonard of Phoenix, and Robyn Gordon of Phoenix; two sons, Bill Gordon and wife Nancy of Indianapolis, Ind. and James "Barney" Gordon and wife Nancy of Omaha; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Gordon and Jim Gordon, of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Helen Gordon-Thompson of Madison, Wis.

Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul, Neb. was in charge of arrangements.

Ruthann Lopack

Ruthann Lopack, 54, who owned and operated The Fountain Restaurant with her husband, Ron, died March 31, 1999 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born May 20, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Lopack was a member of the Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald G. Lopack, Fountain Hills; son, Ronald J. Lopack, Fountain Hills; daughter, Renee L. Scott (Gary) of Phoenix; brothers, Ronald Papay of Garfield Heights, Ohio, Richard Papay of Strongsville, Ohio and Robert Papay of Riddle, Ore.; and two grandchildren, Melody M. Lopack and Gary L. Scott Jr.

Visitation was held April 5 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, and a service was held April 6 at Church of the Ascension.

Interment was at Green Acres cemetery in Scottsdale.

Rose Resch

Rose Resch, 95, of Fountain Hills died March 26, 1999.

Born in Sheboygan, Wis. in 1903, Mrs. Resch came to Fountain Hills 11 years ago.

During her adult career she worked as a ready-to-wear buyer for Gilmore Department Store in Oak Park, Ill.

Survivors include her daughter, Marjorie Clarkson of Fountain Hills; four grandchildren, Jim Clarkson of Fountain Hills, John Clarkson of Scottsdale, Bill Clarkson of San Diego and Hallie Dierken of Scottsdale; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 6 at Church of the Ascension. The family suggests contributions be given to the donor’s choice.

Richard Smith

Richard B. Smith, 79, of Fountain Hills died here July 13, 1999.

Born Jan. 11, 1920 in Upland, Ind., Mr. Smith was a retired railroad conductor with 44 years of service and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was also a member of the Fountain Hills Masonic Square Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the local Men’s Club and the Church of the Ascension.

Mr. Smith was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Grand Lodge of Ohio F.& A.M. of Cuyahoga Falls No. 735 as well as El Zaribah Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; and a daughter, Donna Smith-Waldron of Connecticut.

A memorial service for Mr. Smith was held Saturday, July 17, at Church of the Ascension.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice Family Care, 1550 S. Alma School, suite 102, Mesa, AZ 85210.
