Ethelwyn Rogers
Ethelwyn S. Rogers, 97, of Fountain Hills, died May 31, 2003. She was born August 21, 1905, in Phoenix, British Columbia.
Mrs. Rogers was a former member of the Fountain Hills Women’s Club craft group.
Mrs. Rogers is survived by her daughter Linda Shores (Charles) of Fountain Hills; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Randall, in 1994.
Visitation for Mrs. Rogers was held June 3.
Funeral services will take place in Massachusetts, with interment taking place at Pine Grove cemetery in Westboro, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of the Valley, 5111 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, Ariz., 85014, will be greatly appreciated.
Dr. Carl Becherer
Born to Eternal Life, after a brief but fierce battle with cancer, Carl Victor Becherer, DDS, Dec. 23, 2000, at the age of 75.
Dr. Becherer was born in Belleville, Ill. on Aug. 6, 1925 and moved to Milwaukee at the age of 17 to attend Marquette University.
He was the cherished husband of Helen P. (nee Hoffman) for 56 years (the happiest 28 years of his life!); loving father of Pat (Ivo) Spalatin, Dr. Jeff (Sue) Becherer, Bill Becherer, Mary Beth (John) Stilp, Dr. John (Tina) Becherer, Dan (Chris) Becherer; No. 1 grandpa to Jen Spalatin, Sally (Denny) Moore, Ann and Chris Spalatin, Sarah, Joe, Dizzy, Katie, Julie and Alex Becherer, Peter Stilp, Ali and Sami Becherer and great-grandchild Sorin Moore.
Also, dear brother to Dr. Paul (Anita) Becherer, Mary lou Ardolin, Juanita (Jack) Grundl, James (Betty) Bechere; and he is survived by a multitude of wonderful friends, nieces and nephews.
He married Helen Hoffman in 1945. Dr. Becherer graduated from the Marquette School of Dentistry in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, receiving numerous military honors.
He was a Wauwatosa dentist for 40 years, Professor Emeritus at MUSOD, Dental Alumnus of the year in 1977, Past President of the Dental Forum-Milwaukee, Fellow in the International College of Dentists and a member of numerous other professional organizations.
Dr. Becherer, a devoted Catholic, tennis enthusiast and remodeling buff, sang like an angel every chance he got. Family and friends agree that with his many talents, abilities and energies, he left the world a better place, and as he sang, "I Did It My Way!"
A celebratory mass was held Dec. 27 at Church of the Ascension. A celebration mass in Milwaukee is to be announced.

Donald Cleaver
Donald Bruce Cleaver of Fountain Hills, formerly of Kent, Wash., died Dec. 22, 2000.
Mr. Cleaver was born in Pacific, Wash. And served in the Korean War. He was a Teamster truck driver until his retirement.
Mr. Cleaver is survived by his wife Karen of 33 years; sister, Kay Benson; sons, Donald B. Cleaver Jr. and David A. Cleaver; daughter, Darlene M. Cleaver; grandsons, Christopher Cleaver and Shawn Meyer; and granddaughters, Katie Cleaver and Elaina Castanon.
At his request, no service is planned. His ashes will be spread at Lake Conconully, Wash. in the spring.
Virgil Norton
Virgil Norton, 89, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 27, 2000 in Scottsdale.
Born in Glenbar, Ariz. on March 31, 1911 to goodly parents, Mr. Norton received his education at the nearby seminary.
He loved the outdoors and found his pleasure there fishing, gold panning and hunting. For many years he was in business in Miami, Ariz. He was the owner of a dry cleaning business.
He retired to Fountain Hills in June, 1975.
Mr. Norton is survived by his wife, Bonnie; two sons, Phillip and Paul; daughter, Melanie; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 29, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Fountain Hills.
James Nuckolls
James (Jim) Edwin Nuckolls passed away Jan. 1, 2001 at his home in Fountain Hills at the age of 89.
He was born in Lexington, Tenn. on July 26, 1911.
Mr. Nuckolls graduated salutatorian of his class from the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1932 with a degree in pharmaceutical chemistry.
It was the Great Depression and Mr. Nuckolls had to work for free at his first job in a Memphis pharmacy. He later founded Technical Products Company, a distributor of medical supplies and equipment, which he operated until his retirement.
He married Emalee Roth on Aug. 27, 1941 in Golden, Colo. and resided in Memphis until 1989, when James and Emalee moved to Fountain Hills to be near their only child, Carl Nuckolls, and his family.
His wife Emalee preceded him in death in 1995. Mr. Nuckolls was a member of the American Chemical Society, a 32nd degree Mason and attended Christ’s Church of Fountain Hills.
Mr. Nuckolls will be greatly missed by his son Carl, daughter-in-law Rebecca, his two grandchildren Alissa and Katie, and his devoted health care provider, Mary Frazier, all of Fountain Hills.
His friends are invited to attend his funeral service at Messinger Mortuary in Fountain Hills on Friday, Jan. 5. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with service at 11 a.m.
A brief graveside service will be held at Paradise Memorial Gardens afterwards. Contributions can be made to Christ’s Church of Fountain Hills building fund, 15555 E. Bainbridge Avenue, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.
Mark Pertnoy
An active senior softball player locally Mark Pertnoy died Dec. 27, 2000 at his Fountain Hills residence at the age of 54.
Pertnoy was born in Philadelphia, Penn. Jan. 27, 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Eric, who lives in England; daughter Renee of Scottsdale and one grandchild.
Pertnoy served six years in the United States Army Reserves and was a computer programming systems analyst
A memorial service will beheld Saturday, Jan. 6, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary located at 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Ken Breting
Those who wish to pay respects are reminded that a "Celebration of Life" concert for Kenneth Breting will be held at 2 p.m. Palm Sunday, April 13.
The celebration will be held at St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church, 12990 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale.
The public is invited.
Mr. Breting passed away March 30 and was well known in the Fountain Hills community. His wife, Evelyn, invites everyone on Sunday to celebrate his life, loves and accomplishments.
John Huey, M.D.
John Robert Huey, M.D., 81, a retired orthopaedic surgeon from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a 15-year resident of Rio Verde, died at his home of cancer on Sunday, April 6, 2003.
He was born August 7, 1921, in Rowan, Iowa. Dr. Huey grew up in Wright County, Iowa, graduating from Rowan High School. He received his BA degree in 1943 and his M.D. in 1945, both from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He married the former Margaret Browning in Iowa City, Aug. 11, 1945.
While in medical school the students were sworn into the United States Armed Services. He became a Pfc under the Army Student Training Program. Upon graduation from medical school the students were commissioned First Lieutenants but allowed to serve a civilian internship, which he served at White Cross Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Upon completion of his one-year internship he was placed on detached service with the Veterans Administration and stationed in Knoxville, Iowa, as a Captain at the Veterans Administration’s neuro-psychiatric Hospital.
He was later transferred to the V.A. General Medical and Surgical Hospital in Fargo, N.D. After his discharge from the Army he remained at the Fargo Hospital for another year where he served a one-year residency in general surgery. Three years of residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery followed in Columbus, Ohio, at Ohio State University Hospital, Children’s Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and White Cross Hospital.
In 1952, Dr. Huey opened his office for the practice of Orthopaedic Surgery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. By the time of his retirement in 1984 he had accumulated six partners in his Orthopaedic practice. The following year he became an in-house consultant for the law firm of Shuttleworth and Ingersoll, advising on workers’ compensation and accident cases. In November 1988 Dr. and Mrs. Huey moved to Rio Verde.
Dr. Huey was a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of Mid-Central States Orthopaedic Society, charter member of Mid-America Orthopaedic Society, Past president of the Iowa Orthopaedic Society, member of American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Society, Linn County Medical Society, Mercy Hospital medical staff, past-president, St. Luke’s Hospital medical staff, past board member of the Cedar Rapids Cerebral Palsy Center and the State Cerebral Palsy Board of Iowa.
He was appointed to the board of governors of the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. Twin Cities Unit, serving five years, two years as treasurer.
Although he was very active in medical activities, Dr. Huey was very civic minded and served five years on the Board of Directors of the Cedar Rapids-Marion Area Chamber of Commerce. He was elected president of he Chamber of Commerce in 1981.
Dr. Huey spent 12 years on the Cedar Rapids Airport Commission, several years as chairman. He was a pilot and a member of Flying Physicians Association. He was a thirty-second degree Mason, a member of El Kahir Shrine and a former impresario of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 139.
He has been a board member of the Cedar Rapids Art Museum, a 50-year member of the Cedar Rapids Rotary Club and a legislative representative for the University of Iowa. He is a past Commodore of the Okoboji Yacht Club at Lake Okoboji, where the Hueys have had a summer home for 39 years. He has served on the board of the Rio Verde Country Club.
Dr. Huey is survived by his widow, Margaret, and four children: Rita of Denver, Colo. John, Jr. (Patti) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lisa of Minneapolis, Minn., and Marilyn Lortz (Mike) of Edmond, Okla. There are 6 grandchildren: Brandon, Sarah and Layne Huey, and Michael, Barrett and Braeden Lortz.

Fred G. Malroy
Fred Gilbert Malroy, 67, died of natural causes near his Fountain Hills home while sharpening his marksmanship skills at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club on Saturday, March 20, 2003.
He loved the outdoors. Fred’s career spanned 25 years in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a forester and was followed by many years as real estate agent, part-time local historian and orator.
In his youth he served his country honorably in the U.S. Marines and later treated every excursion as a military expedition, whether he was with his wife, outdoorsmen friends or "grandbabies," as he loved to call them.
Fred and wife Rosemarie were life partners for 42 years. Always passionate and intellectually curious, he had an endearingly wry sense of humor and will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie, of Fountain Hills; three sons, Jason, Eric and Sean; three grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
Katherine L. Bismarck
Katherine L. Brisbin Bismarck went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2004 in Flagstaff, Ariz. She was born July 3, 1918 to William and Florence Brisbin and spent most of her life in an around Plainfield, Ill.
Mrs. Bismarck and her husband, Calvin, moved to Fountain Hills in 1993. Most recently they made their home in White Mountain Lakes, Ariz.
She was a member of the Pansy Chapter Eastern Star and the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Bismarck was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Margaret (Howard) Arnold, her nephew, Charles Arnold, and her former husband, Robert J. Taylor. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Calvin Bismarck; her daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Kay (Richard) Carlson, Maryann (Carl) Olen, Jean Louise (Larry) Grommon; and a step-daughter, Kara Thurbush; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one nephew. Also surviving are her good friends Bill and Helen Quigley and Ken and Donna Kissel, whom she considered to be part of the family.
Visitation for Mrs. Bismarck will be held Friday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd. Fountain Hills. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11 a.m. at the mortuary.
Patricia E. Cramer
Patricia E. Cramer, 86, born Dec. 3, 1917 to Beatrice Shannon-Bennett and William Mays Bennett in Portland, Ore., died June 2, 2004 in Scottsdale of congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Cramer moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1939 and worked in the restaurant industry. In 1954 she married Leo A. Cramer of Oakland, Calif. They moved to Marin County, Calif. where they owned and operated several dinner restaurants.
In 1968 Mrs. Cramer entered the real estate industry. She worked for Title Realty, Grubb & Ellis and was a broker of record for Town & Village Associates in Montclair, Calif. when she retired in 1982.
Upon retirement, Mrs. Cramer moved to Incline Village, Nev. and subsequently to Fountain Hills.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother and a sister. Survivors include a son, Michael Hagan; a daughter, Tammy Davidson; four grandsons, Shon and Brian Delia and Patrick and Christopher Hagan; two great-grandsons; nieces; and long-term companion Lee Pike.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at her home in Fountain Hills. All friends and relatives are invited to attend.

Anthony Doyce
Anthony F. Doyce, 71, born Oct. 31, 1932 in Chicago, Ill, passed away June 10, 2004 in Fountain Hills.
He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine E. (Lantero) Doyce; many nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.
Tony retired from the Chicago Police Department after 25 years of service. He enjoyed several hobbies and was an active member of the Burlington Route Historical Society, where he had many friends.
A remembrance service was held Sunday, June 13, for family and friends. Private interment was held June 14.
Capt. Charles L. Horowitz
Capt. Charles L. Horowitz, USN, (ret) graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954. During his distinguished military career he was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit (Combat V), the Purple Heart, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (Gold Star), three Meritorious Service Medals, a Navy Unit Commendation and a Combat Action Ribbon.
After retiring from the Navy, Capt. Horowitz led the Spanish Navy frigate and Carrier Program for Sperry.
Upon moving to Arizona he led the docents training program at the Champlin Fighter Aircraft Fighter Museum in Mesa and was a member and Chief Spaghetti Officer of the Men’s’ Club in Fountain Hills.
Capt. Horowitz is survived by his wife, Lee Horowitz, Surprise, Ariz.; a son, Peter Horowitz of Chicago, Ill.; and a daughter, Lauren Brooks of Chicago, Ill.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations are suggested to the Museum of Flight, 9404 E. Marginal Way, South Seattle, WA 98108-4097.
Dorothy Mae Klasen
In loving memory of our mother, Dorothy Mae Klasen (nee Tansey), age 78, who passed from this life on May 28, 2004 at Fountain View Village following a long illness.
Born in Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Klasen lived in that area until moving to Fountain Hills seven years ago. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, James H. Klasen and her grandson, Brian J. Klasen.
Survivors include five children; Linda Paul (Dale) of Fountain Hills, Larry Klasen of Alhambra, Calif., James (Mari) Klasen of Fountain Hills, Jerald (Kim) Klasen of Scottsdale and Tim Klasen of Fountain Hills, and five grandchildren, Kate and Sean Klasen, and Andrea, Matthew, and Stephen Paul.
Funeral services will be held in Cary, Ill. At Windridge Memorial Park at a later date.
