Thomas W. Furie

Thomas Wooton Furie, 71, died May 19, at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.

Mr. Furie was born in Dearborn, Mich., and graduated from St. Mary of Redford High School in Detroit and studied two years at Lawrence Institute of Technology.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he served in the Counter Intelligence Corps at Fort Halabird, Md.

Mr. Furie worked as a journeyman plumber in the Detroit area and later as a pipefitter in the automotive industry. He retired from Kelsey Hayes in January 1988.

He was an active member of the Democratic Party in Michigan, working on local, senatorial and presidential campaigns. He served as a trustee in his local UAW union. In Fountain Hills he was a member of the Knights of Columbus at Ascension Church.

Mr. Furie is survived by his wife, Dorothy Sullivan Furie, of Fountain Hills and Farmington, Mich.; three sons, Thomas W. of Downers Grove, Ill., Paul J. of Farmington, Mich., Walter S. of Chicago, Ill; eight daughters, Virginia Furie of Studio City, Calif., Maura Schlicting of Sandusky, Mich., Anne Marie L’Heureux of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Margaret Kelly of Carsonville, Mich., Catherine Bliton of Katy, Texas, Agnes Perozzi of Buffalo Groves, Ill., Aimee Turowski of South Lyon, Mich., and Dorothy Chisholm of Dearborn Heights, Mich. There are 22 grandchildren.

Visitation was held at Ascension Church May 20 followed by a funeral mass celebrated by Fr. Thomas O’Dea.

Interment will be a Holy Sepulcher cemetery, Detroit, followed by a memorial mass at St. Mel’s Catholic Church in Dearborn Heights, Mich. on June 24.

Mary Knuff

Mary Elizabeth Knuff, 59 of Dunnellon, Fla. died June 26, 2000 at home with her husband.

Born in June, 1941 in Pontiac, Mich., Mrs. Knuff moved to Dunnellon in 1996.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, Citrus Springs, and of the Women’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Group of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Michigan.

She is survived by her husband, Michael E. Knuff of Dunnellon; two sons, Michael E. Knuff of Monroe, Mich. and Thomas M. Knuff of Erie, Mich.; a daughter, Kimberly B. Knuff of Toledo, Ohiop; her mother, Doris B. McCormack of Fountain Hills; brothers, Phillip Metevia of Tennessee, Clifford McCormack of Lambertville, Mich., and Henry Metevia of Pontiac, Mich.; sisters, Janet Lee Tawakalna and Jean Louise Hasselle of Fountain Hills and Ethelyn Anne Kimrey of Houghton Lake, Mich. and Denise Green of Union Lake, Mich.; and two granddaughters, Kelli E. and Karri M., of Erie, Mich.

Memorial services were conducted June 30 in Citrus Springs.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9425 N. Citrus Springs Blvd., Citrus Springs, FL 34434.

A second memorial service will be held for family and friends of Mrs. Knuff on July 7 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Temperance, Mich.

Willard L. Allen

Willard L. Allen, 78, of Fountain Hills died July 13 at his home. He was born in Montpelier, Ohio, the son of the late Roy and Joe Allen.

Mr. Allen and his brother, Joe, previously owned and operated Louden’s Department Store. He moved to Arizona with his wife, Thelma R. Allen in 1974.

Mr. Allen is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was an early resident of Fountain Hills where he owned and operated La Fuenta Resort Apartments.

Mr. Allen was an avid golfer, fisherman and horsemen and was owner of a prizewinning trotter. He was also a strong supporter of the arts, particularly jazz. He once brought the famous jazz pianist, Dorothy Donnigan to play in his home.

Surviving Mr. Allen are his wife, Thelma; three daughters, Julie Allen of Houston, Mo., Molly Manley of Scottsdale, and Jennifer Heller of Phoenix; one son, Michael Allen of Montpelier, Ohio; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 17 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Fountain Hills Library Association, P.O Box 17581, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

Eleanor C. Kasten

Eleanor C. Kasten, 90 of Fountain Hills died July 14 in Scottsdale.

Mrs. Kasten was born Nov. 22, 1910 in Chicago, Ill. She worked as a bookkeeper for a steel manufacturing company.

Mrs. Kasten is survived by two daughters, Patricia O’Hern (Lawrence) of Fountain Hills, and Nancy Winston (Thomas) of Taylor, Mich.; three grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85013.

Olive Millyard Beaty

Olive Millyard Beaty, of Fountain Hills, daughter of Mollie B. Spitler and Addison Millyard, passed away Oct. 7, 2004.

Mrs. Beaty was born Nov. 25, 1909 in Lakin, Kan. Her parents came to Lakin from Lawrence, Kan. in 1885. Her father was a successful businessman and farmer, his special crop was alfalfa seed.

At the age of nine, Olive moved with her mother to Whittier, Calif. where she lived until she married Tony Beaty (son of Russell Beaty, a pioneer family) Feb. 25, 1938.

Olive and Tony lived in the Lakin area taking care of their extensive ranching interest for more than 40 years. They retired in 1978 to live in Fountain Hills where they remained until their deaths.

Olive is the last of the Millyard family of two daughters and five sons. She had no children.

At her request there were no services.

Chase Andrew Scheidt

Chris and Valerie Scheidt of Casa Grande are mourning the sudden loss of two-week old Chase Andrew.

He is also survived by grandparents, Paul and Connie Scheidt of Casa Grande; great-grandparents Mel and Joan Winton of Fountain Hills; a brother Camron and sister Madison.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fountain Hills.

The family is requesting memorial donations to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Terry Alexander

Terry Alexander, 51, of Fountain Hills died July 10, 1997.

Mrs. Alexander was born Jan. 28, 1946 in Queens, N.Y. She was a self-employed painter.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by her husband, Ernie; one daughter, Tressa Marie, both of Fountain Hills; and two sisters, Evelyn Chandler of Grass Valley, Calif. and Nancy Allen of Fern Gully, Australia.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alexander were held July 15 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens, Scottsdale.

Kirk Lewis

Kirk Lewis, 38, died Sunday, July 13, in Phoenix.

Mr. Lewis, a Phoenix resident, was born Sept. 28, 1958, in Sacaton, Ariz. He worked as a construction welder.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his parents, Moody and Flora Belle Lewis of Phoenix; one brother, Gordon Lewis of Glendale; four sisters, Pat Lewis, Regina Pico, Rana Hall and Clissene Lewis Brandvold, all of Phoenix; and a grandfather, Gordon Williams of Phoenix.

Visitation for Mr. Lewis will be held Friday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort McDowell Brush Arbor. Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 19, at 6 a.m. at the Fort McDowell Brush Arbor.

Internment will be at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

Monroe Johnson

Monroe A. Johnson, 80, of Owatonna, Minn. died July 16, 1997 at Owatonna.

Mr. Johnson was the father of Phyliss Kern and Shirley Berstreatar of Fountain Hills.

Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 6, 1917 in New Richland, Minn. He and his wife Myrtle farmed for 27 years, and he was also self employed mowing grass along highways.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Myrtle of Medford, Minn.; three sons, Manuel of Minnesota, Donald of Missouri and David of Texas; two daughters, Phyliss Kern and Shirley Berstreatar, both of Fountain Hills; one brother, Lester Johnson of Minnesota; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, six brothers and two sisters.

Burial will be at St. Olaf cemetery in New Richland, Minn.

Robert Tropp Sr.

Robert N. Tropp Sr., 75, of Fountain Hills died July 20, 1997 at Fountain Hills.

Mr. Tropp was born Oct. 20, 1921 in Elizabeth, N.J. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II and worked as a petroleum systems analyst.

Mr. Tropp was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, the National Rifle Association and the Red Mountain Trap & Skeet Club.

Mr. Tropp is survived by one son, Robert N. Tropp Jr. of Media, Pa.; one daughter, Sandra L. Tropp of Media, Pa.; one sister, Helen Waeker of Union, N.J.; and one grandson, Michael Robert Tropp.

Mr. Tropp will be buried at Evergreen cemetery, Hillside, N.J.

Minnie Kochen

Minnie Kochen, 74, of Scottsdale, formerly of Fountain Hills, died July 15, 1997 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-Osborn.

Born May 9, 1923 in Bush, Ill., Mrs. Kochen worked in quality control for an electronics manufacturer.

Survivors include her son, Ernest Kochen of Fountain Hills; sisters, Mary Ferreri of Illinois, Juanita Lynn of Arkansas and Jessica of Illinois; two grandchildren, Patti and Michael Kochen; and three great-grandchildren, D.J., Amber and Michael.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, 102 W. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85003-1213 or the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th Street, Tempe, AZ 85282-3145.

Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Vernon Isaac

Vernon D. Isaac, 40, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community died July 17, 1997 at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-North.

Born March 24, 1957 in Phoenix, Mr. Isaac worked as a maintenance laborer.

Survivors include his mother and father, William and Lolita Isaac; sons, Dion G. Isaac and Vincent George; brothers, Elliott, Darrell and Willard Isaac; sisters, Bernadine Boyd, Hermonie Isaac-Old Bear and Joyclyn Hernandez; and his great-great-grandfather, Sniffew Dickens.

A service was held July 21 at the Fort McDowell Gymnasium. Interment will be at Fort McDowell cemetery.

Valentine Biebrich, Sr.

Valentine Biebrich, Sr., 58, of Fountain Hills died Tuesday, July 1, in Fountain Hills.

Mr. Biebrich was born July 29, 1938 in Chicago, Ill. He was employed as a pressman for Phoenix Newspapers.

Mr. Biebrich is survived by his wife, Carole Ann, of Fountain Hills and three sons, Valentine Biebrich, Jr., Eric Biebrich and Ernest Biebrich.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, Az., 85014-5669.

Ruth Mouat

Ruth Florence Jones Mouat died of cancer at her home in Fountain Hills on July 1, 1997. She was 81 years old.

Born Dec. 30, 1915 in Plymouth, Pa., Mrs. Mouat was a graduate of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pa.

In 1977 she was widowed, retired from a long nursing career and moved to Fountain Hills.

During those years she lived here, Mrs. Mouat was an active member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, the Fountain Hills Women's Club and the Fountain Hills Arts and Crafts Group.

For more than 19 years she volunteered with the Scottsdale Memorial Hospital Auxiliary at SMH-Osborn.

Survivors include her daughter, Carol Dykstra of Nipoma, Calif.; brother, Arnott Jones of Shreveport, La.; sister, Louise Brader of Fountain Hills; and three grandchildren, Abby, Stephanie and Alex Mouat of Gainesville, Fla.

A cement picnic table has recently been placed in her honor at Fountain Park. The family said it serves as a tribute not only to her but to the community she loved.

A memorial service was held July 6 at the Presbyterian Church.

Joseph Agostinelli

A Mass of the Resurrection for Joseph Agostinelli was held July 7, 1997 at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills.

There was a graveside service with full military honors at Veterans Memorial cemetery July 8.

Mr. Agostinelli died July 2, 1997, at his home. He was born Dec. 10, 1913 in Valenzano (Bari), Italy.

On June 9, 1945 he married Emily Balcirak.

She survives him, along with their five children: Sandy Chappell Parke (Bruce Parke), Linda Bell (Larry), Nicholas Agostinelli (Molly), Joan Agostinelli (David Malin) and Gina Agostinelli; six grandchildren: Reed Chappell, Megin and Joseph Agostinelli, Michael and Richard Malin, and Austin Bell; a sister, Nannette Lanera; and a brother, Frank Agostinelli (Irene).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicola Agostinelli and Carmela Brandonisio; and a sister, Anna Guerra.

As a young man, Mr. Agostinelli served for 52 months in the U.S. Army during World War II. His military career was distinguished by two Purple Hearts and multiple commendations.

Mr. Agostinelli was a general contractor whose passion for life, philanthropy and compassion for the community will be remembered by his friends and family. His sense of humor was cherished by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Hospice of the Valley or The American Heart or Lung Associations.
