John Bercel Sr.

John Bercel Sr., 88, father of Jack Bercel of Fountain Hills, died unexpectedly June 27, 1997 while on vacation in Niagara Falls, Canada.

He was born May 6, 1909 in Castle Shannon, Pa., son of Joseph and Mary Helen Bercel. His marriage to Mary Iwaniec was in Detroit on April 24, 1934.

Mr. Bercel was founder of Bercel Garage Builders, Inc. of Sterling Heights in 1953. He retired in 1996, and the business is still operated by his family. Mr. Bercel loved his farming, hunting, fishing and card playing.

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary of 63 years is a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and James Smith of Yale; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Roseanna of Fountain Hills, Lawrence and Marilyn of Sterling Heights, Michael and Margaret of Washington Township and Thomas and Yvonne of Mt. Clemens; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert, three sisters and three brothers in addition to his parents.

Funeral services were held July 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tale with burial at Sacred Heart cemetery.

Orlan Carmichael

Orlan Dean Carmichael, 78, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 2, 1997 in Scottsdale.

Born Sept. 8, 1918 in Plainville, Kan., Mr. Carmichael was an Army Air Force World War II veteran, a businessman and an educator.

He is survived by brothers Roy of Plainville, and Elmo of Mesa; sister, Verlene Harrison of Plainville; daughters, Kathie Ann Gross of Plano, Texas, Lisa Ray Hynek of Bremen, Kan., Terry Lea Strivings of Tempe; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

Robert Boyle

Robert Clayton Boyle of Fountain Hills died Aug. 5, 1997 in Scottsdale.

Born Feb. 2, 1926 in Columbus, Ind., Mr. Boyle married Marcella on Feb. 11, 1949.

Mr. Boyle retired from the Cummins Engine Company as plant manager in 1983 after 41 years of service to the firm.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Locally, Mr. Boyle was an active member of Christ's Church, past president of the Noon Kiwanis Club, past treasurer of the Fountain Hills Library Association and a member of The Club, a men's organization.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella of Fountain Hills; son, David Boyle of Scottsdale; three daughters, Debra Garris and Diane Fairbank of Scottsdale and Amy Sorocco of South Bend, Ind.; six grandchildren; a sister, Jane Rush of Nashville, Tenn.; and two nephews.

Funeral services were held at Christ's Church of Fountain Hills on Thursday, Aug. 7. Burial will be in Columbus, Ind.

Barbara Gross

Barbara Sue Gross, 71, of Fountain Hills dies August 10, 1997.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Gross was a retired bookkeeper. She came to Arizona six years ago from New York. She was a volunteer for the Welcome Wagon of Fountain Hills.

Survivors include a brother, Donal Gross, of Scottsdale.

Public visitation was held Aug. 12 at Sinai Mortuary Chapel in Phoenix.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Jewish National Fund, 7330 N. 16th Street, No. 202C, Phoenix, AZ 85020 or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ, 85014.

Richard DeGroff

Richard L. DeGroff, 75, died Aug. 22, 1997.

A recent resident of Scottsdale, Mr. DeGroff had previously resided in Bryan, Ohio, where he was an independent insurance agent. He had served in the 13th Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Michael and Thomas, both of Scottsdale; two daughters, Amy of Atlanta, Ga. and Jane Emanuelson of Memphis, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.

He also is survived by a sister, Jean Good of Melbourne, Fla.; brothers, Harold of Mesa, James of Palm Desert, Calif., Bruce of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Clarence, Morton and Norman of Bryan.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Elizabeth, and three brothers, Robert, Maurice and Brooks.

A memorial service will be held in Bryan on Sept. 8.

The family suggests contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 9494 E. Becker Lane, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.

Peter Klein

Peter Klein, 75, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital North.

Mr. Klein was born Dec. 24, 1921 in Chicago, Ill. He was retired as director of recreation for the Chicago Parks District. He served in the Navy Air Corp. during World War II.

Mr. Klein was a member of the Sunset Kiwanis Club in Fountain Hills and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation Commission.

Mr. Klein is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Fountain Hills; one daughter, Linda Hauser, of Chicago; one brother, Jacob (Jack), of Chicago; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Amy and Daniel Hauser of Chicago.

A memorial service will be held for Mr. Klein on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 Saguaro Boulevard.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to the Alzheimers Association, 2323 S. Hardy Drive, Tempe, Az. 85282.

Leo O'Day

Leo Patrick O'Day, 71, of Fountain Hills, a retired businessman, died Aug. 24, 1997 at home.

Mr. O'Day was born in Fargo, N.D. and was a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Lou; a son, Leo Patrick O'Day Jr.; five daughters, Kathleen Faruolo, Sheila Boddicker, Mary Battle, Joan Waldschmidt and Kerry Slagle; a brother, Daniel J. O'Day; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said Thursday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd. Burial will be held in Fargo.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016.

Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary handled the arrangements.

John Schlum

John Vernon Schlum, 59, died Aug. 22, 1997 while vacationing with his wife at their Lake Michigan chalet near Traverse City, Mich.

Mr. Schlum was born in Royal Oak, Mich. on Nov. 9, 1937. He graduated from St. Mary's in Royal Oak. Prior to moving to Fountain Hills, Mr. Schlum owned a car dealership in the metro Detroit area.

Mr. Schlum lived and worked in Fountain Hills since 1977. He was regarded as a pioneer of Fountain Hills residential and commercial real estate development.

Mr. Schlum was a co-founder and long-time coach in the Fountain Hills Little League. He also was instrumental in bringing the Fountain Bowl to Fountain Hills.

Mr. Schlum, along with his son Jay, were currently working together at the Little Fountain Resort Condominium development.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn; mother, Barbara; sisters, Loretta and Donna; mother-in-law, Gloria Menton; son, Jay, and daughter-in-law Denise; daughter, Jaki Underwood, and son-in-law Bill Underwood; son, Lt. Kip M. Schlum of the U.S. Air Force; grandchildren Derrick, Nicholas, Carly and Timothy; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Mr. Schlum was preceded in death by his father, Vernon John Schlum.

A memorial gathering will be held at Jaki and Bill Underwood's home, 16002 Burro Drive, Fountain Hills, on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. All friends are invited.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce, care of John V. Schlum Memorial, 16836 Palisades Blvd., Fountain Hills AZ 85268

Paul Burk

Paul W. Burk, 76, a Fountain Hills resident since 1995, died July 18, 2002 at the Eckstein Center in Scottsdale after battling multiple myeloma for 15 years.

Born Aug. 19, 1925 in Waterloo, Iowa, Mr. Burk owned Paul Burk Pontiac, a new automobile business, in Waterloo for more than 30 years.

He also was an associate realtor and broker with Harbaugh/Winninger Realtors of Waterloo.

Mr. Burk was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran from World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Burk of Fountain Hills; sons, Craig (Emmanuelle) Burk of Portland, Ore., Blair (Linda) Burk of Peoria, Ariz. and Kevin Burk of Bloomington, Minn.; brothers, Ronald (Lucille) Burk of Evansdale, Iowa and Robert (Beverly) Burk of Palatine, Ill.; two grandchildren, Zachary Paul and Zelda Louise Burk of Portland, Ore.; and one step-grandson, Darrin Linsenbardt of Peoria, Ariz.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25, at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona. Interment also will be at the National Memorial cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fountain Hills Library Association, P.O. Box 17581, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269.

Patrick Reilly

Patrick John Reilly, 53, of Fountain Hills died here July 14, 2002.

Born Dec. 15, 1948 in Fond du Lac, Wis., Mr. Reilly was an agent with MCO Realty in Fountain Hills and did appraisal work as well.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Reilly was MCO Realty’s "sales person of the year" in 2001, served on the local Board of Realtors, was on the Bank One board of directors in Wisconsin, served on the Condemnation Board of Fond du Lac County and was president of the Kettle Moraine Lake Association in Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Reilly of Fountain Hills; two daughters, Lisa Reilly of Fountain Hills and Tricia Reilly of New York City; mother, Arlene Reilly of Fond du Lac; sisters, Sheila (Charles) Loehr of Fond du Lac, Shelly (Ralph) Stayer of Fond du Lac; brothers, Dan (Denise) Reilly of Campbellsport, Wis. and Mike Reilly of Dewey, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Reilly.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills.

Terry A. Bell

Services for Terry Bell, 58, of Fountain Hills will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 2, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

Mr. Bell died Monday, June 30, in Scottsdale following a brief illness. He was born Feb. 14, 1939 at Cobden, Ill.

Mr. Bell received an undergraduate degree from Arizona State University in 1970 and a masters degree in business administration from the University of Houston in 1975.

Following a brief career in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Bell had jobs in San Francisco, Houston, Paris, France, Paraguay and Brazil. He was employed by the CNA Insurance Co., Gulf Oil and the U.S. State Department.

Mr. Bell is survived by his wife, Marietta of Fountain Hills; one brother, Tim of Sikeston, Mo.; and one sister, Sharron of St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Bell is remembered as a man of kindness and compassion who will leave a legacy of love and laughter to his family.

Internment is to be at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.

Louis Wayne Hood

Louis Wayne Hood, 67, of Fort McDowell died Jan. 12, 2000 at his home.

Mr. Hood was born May 25, 1932 at Camp Verde, Ariz. He grew up at Fort McDowell and attended school there as well as Phoenix Indian School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Mr. Hood worked as a land surveyor for McCulloch Properties during the early development of Fountain Hills. He was a tribal government director and served on the Tribal Council and was president from 1982 to 1984.

Mr. Hood reportedly spent Jan. 11, the day before he died, working 16 hours on the tribal election.

Fort McDowell President-elect Clinton Pattea said he had known Mr. Hood since childhood when they went to school together.

"When we grew up here there was no running water, no electricity," Pattea said. "He served his people and knew the struggles of providing for the people.

"I’m glad he was able to see the benefits of his work."

Mr. Hood is survived by one daughter, Debra Hood of Polacca, Ariz.; two brothers, Warren Nelson, Jr. and Cecil Dorchester, both of Fort McDowell; two sisters, Carol Nelson Smith and Nadine Nelson, both of Fort McDowell; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services for Louis Hood were held Jan. 15 at Fort McDowell, and interment was at the Fort McDowell cemetery. Arrangements were made by Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to the Arizona Heart Institute, 2632 N. 20th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

George Schnurr

George E. Schnurr, 83, of Fountain Hills died Jan. 9, 2000.

Born Sept. 15, 1916 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Mr. Schnurr was a business owner and worked in the building materials industry.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from World War II and was a member of St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Schnurr of Fountain Hills; step-son, Frank Wiggins of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Georgeann Harding of Dallas, Texas; step-daughter, Susan Becker of Berkley, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony on the Desert, 12990 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ 85259.
