Jeanne Minarsich

Jeanne Minarsich, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on March 14, 2001.

She was born on Oct. 10, 1921 in Napier, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Frank Thomas Minarsich; sons, Frank Charles Minarsich and Michael Ray Minarsich; daughter, Kathleen Sue Minarsich-Thomason; brothers, Bob Sheehan and Joseph Sheehan; sisters, Katherine Hughes, Mary Corrado and Joann Sandholm; and 11 grandchildren.

A visitation was held March 18 at Sunland Memorial Park Mortuary in Sun City. A funeral Mass was held March 19 at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church in Sun City. Interment followed the Mass at Sunland Memorial Park.

Contributions may be sent to Sun Health Hospice, 12740 N. Plaza del Rio Blvd., Peoria, AZ 85381.

Louise C. Grillo

Louise C. Grillo, 85 of Fountain Hills died Sunday, April 8 in Scottsdale.

Ms. Grillo was born August 23, 1915 at Framingham, Mass. She was a homemaker.

Ms. Grillo is survived by two brothers, John Chiariello of Rhode Island, and Joseph Chiariello of California; two sisters, Helen Berrini of Florida and Mary Parlato of Massachusetts; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, 102 W. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85003.

Vincent (Pete) Smith

Vincent (Pete) Smith, 68 passed away April 7, 2001 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mr. Smith was born on June 18, 1932 in Grand Forks, N.D., the son of Frank and Edna Smith.

He was employed by the Grand Forks Seed, Co. and by Terra Chemical International, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Rae (Rossow); one son Vincent Peter (Virginia), Colfax, ND; one daughter Suzanne (Joseph) DeSerto, Chicago, IL; one sister Barbara (Ralph) McDowell, Zionsville, IN; one brother Robert, Grand Forks, ND; three grandchildren, Michaela, Joseph and Hannah; three step-grandchildren, Rachel, Tony and Michael, 13 nieces and nephews and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard.

A memorial services was held at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 10. Memorial contributions may be made to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, 1300 N. 12th Street, #404, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

Lois Burke

Lois E. Burke, 46, of Fort McDowell died April 18, 2001 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea.

Born Jan. 18, 1955 at San Carlos, Mrs. Burke was a homemaker.

She is survived by her mother, Evangeline “Angie” Jones; companion, Eli Smith; sons, Clayton Delano and Elliot Jones; daughters, Traci and Juleigh Burke; brothers, Johnnie G. Jones, Sylvester Jones (Bonnie), Gilbert Jones Jr. (Veronica) and Duane B. Jones (Cornelia); sisters, Sharon Dolan, Velma Jones, Karen M. Jones and Harlene K. Bullis (Vernon); and one granddaughter, Brigett Hailey Delano – all are from Fort McDowell Indian Community.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dean Jones, in 1995.

Visitation was held April 22 at the family residence, and a service was held April 23 at the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Arbor. Interment was at Fort McDowell cemetery.

Elaine Klieger

Elaine Delores Klieger, 84, of Fountain Hills died May 2, 2001.

Born Oct. 24, 1916 in Milwaukee, Wis., she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Jack A. Klieger, and her loving parents, Clarence and Cecelia Walderon.

Mrs. Klieger is survived by her loving daughter Jackie Klieger of Houston, Texas and nephews Christian Klieger of Martinez, Calif. and Douglas Klieger of Wayne, Pa. along with numerous friends.

A special tribute goes to Mrs. Klieger’s recent caregivers, Karen, Annie, Vivian, Mary, Shelly, Lois, Gerri, Marlis, Carolyn, Christine and Debbie.

Memorials may be made to the Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute, 925 N. 87th St., Milwaukee, WI 53226 or the Dr. and Mrs. Jack A. Klieger Library Fund c/o St. Joseph’s Hospital, 5000 W. Chambers St., Milwaukee, WI 53210.

A celebration of life gathering and service was held Monday, May 7, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary.

Annie Rayburn

Annie Rayburn, 53, of Fountain Hills passed away March 20, 2001 at the home of her parents in Cottonwood.

She was born on Long Island, N.Y. on Oct. 25, 1947. She attended high school in Glendale and attended the University of Iowa. She lived in Alaska where she worked on the Alaskan pipeline.

Most recently she had been self-employed as a massage therapist and spiritual healer in Fountain Hills.

Annie is survived by her son, Eric Rayburn, of Tennessee; her parents, Louis and Domenica Chavez of Cottonwood; two brothers, Tim Chavez of Cottonwood and Val Chavez of Ilwaco, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Brimhall of Show Low and Michelle Cutting of Anchorage, Alaska; several nieces and nephews; and her dog and constant companion, Pancho.

Annie was preceded in death by her brother, Michael.

Annie will be missed dearly by her friends and the many people she touched through her work and her uncompromising spirit.

Roy John Newhard

Roy John Newhard, 71, of Fountain Hills died May 7 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.

Mr. Newhard was born March 6, 1930 in Orchard Park, NY. He worked in wall system sales. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Newhard was active in the Fountain Hills social scene as a member of the Men’s Club, Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, a former member of Sunset Kiwanis Club and the Automobile Club.

A loving husband, father and dear friend, Mr. Newhard is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Fountain Hills; three daughters, Debra (Eric) Kloor of Lafayette, CO, Nancy (Greg) Bailey of LaMesa, CA and Susan (Anthony) Pinto of New River, AZ; and three grandchildren, Noah and Sophie Kloor and Nicholas Pinto.

A memorial service for Mr. Newhard will be held Thursday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 Fountain Hills Boulevard.

The family requests memorial contributions to the Southwest Autism Research Center, 1002 E. McDowell Road, Ste. 8, Phoenix, AZ 85006.

Thelma Lee Danforth

Thelma Lee Danforth of Fountain Hills passed away quietly at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn on May 16, 2001. She was 73 years old.

Thelma was born in Kings Mountain, N.C. After attending UNC for two years she moved to New York with her sisters where she worked for a number of years as a secretary in the advertising and management consulting fields.

In 1967 she married Norman and, after several years in the New York and northeastern Pennsylvania areas, they moved to Irving, Texas, where he was an executive with an international oil company.

In 1985 they moved to Sydney, Australia where he continued with the same organization until they retired to Fountain Hills in 1989.

Until her health began to fail, Thelma played golf and bowled with the Roadrunners. She was an original member of the Friendship Circle group of ladies.

Thelma is survived by husband Norman of Fountain Hills; sister, Reola McNair, of Kings Mountain, N.C.; and sister Hazeline Dankert of Oxford, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, at 3 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Red Cross, Central Arizona Chapter, P.O. Box 52641, Phoenix, AZ 85702-2641.

Michael Nakai

Michael G. Nakai, 29, of the Fort McDowell Indian Community died May 12, 2001 at Fort McDowell.

Born Feb. 23, 1972 in Phoenix, he was a warehouse worker at the Fort McDowell Casino.

Survivors include his fiancé, Olivia Camacho of Fort McDowell; mother, Rose Nakai of Phoenix; and sisters, Juliette Ornelas, Melvina Nakai, Veronica Zubillaga and Ericka Ornelas, all of Phoenix.

Visitation was held May 17 at Olivia’s residence, and a service was held May 18 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens.

The family suggests memorial contributions be given to Valley Center of the Deaf, 3130 E. Roosevelt Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008.

Margaret Picmann

Margaret A. Picmann, 57, of Fountain Hills died May 18, 2001 at her residence.

Born Aug. 1, 1943 in Detroit, Mich., she was a homemaker. Mrs. Picmann also was a member of Church of the Ascension.

Survivors include her husband, Donald A. Picmann of Fountain Hills; son, Jack D. McCarthy (Lisa) of London, England; step-sons, Tim Picmann of Sterling Heights, Mich. and Don C. Picmann (Margaret) of Royal Oak, Mich.; brothers, Douglas Maclean (Sandra) of Oakland Township, Mich. and Charles Maclean of Kincheloe, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Dean Picmann of Royal Oak, Mich., Kelly Picmann of Royal Oak and Tori Picmann of Sterling Heights, Mich.

Interment will be at Pine Lake cemetery in Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 5377, Phoenix, AZ 85010 or to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Dolores Pisarik

Dolores Jean Pisarik, 68, of Fountain Hills died May 15, 2001 in Scottsdale.

Born July 24, 1932 in Oak Park, Ill., Mrs. Pisarik was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Edward Pisarik; sons, Michael Reid and Christopher T. Pisarik; brother, James Joseph Mikyska III; and one grandchild, Erin P. Pisarik.

Service and visitation were held May 20 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Samuel W. Vancel

Samuel W. Vancel, 53, of Fountain Hills died Dec. 26, 2001 in Fountain Hills.

Mr. Vancel was born Feb. 13, 1948 in Tazewell, Tenn. He was owner of U.S. Industrial Fastener Supply Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Vancel is survived by his father, Rev. Hugh Vancel of Tazewell, Tenn.; his wife, Lillian Vancel of Fountain Hills; a son, James Vancel, and a daughter, Samantha Vancel, both of Fountain Hills; a brother, Joe Vancel (Wanda) of Tazewell, Tenn.; and a sister, Cornie Belle McCloud of Nashville, Tenn.

Visitation was held Saturday, Dec. 29, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Graveside services were held at Paradise Memorial Garden in Scottsdale with a memorial service at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.

The family is requesting memorial contributions to the Alliance for Lung Cancer, P.O. Box 849, Vancouver, WA 98666.

Philip Lauer

Philip H. Lauer Sr., 65, of Fountain Hills passed away Dec. 24, 2001 in Kindred Hospital in Phoenix.

Mr. Lauer, the son of Theodore and Elizabeth Williams Lauer, was born Nov. 24, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pa. and lived most of his adult life in Kimberton, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; their three children, Mimi Lauer, Philip Jr. (Betsy) and Jodi Lauer; and one granddaughter, all of Phoenixville, Pa.

He is also survived by his sister, Maryjane Grotyohann, of New Jersey and brother, Theodore Lauer Jr. of Tennessee.

Mr. Lauer worked as a salesman in the electrical industry and loved what he did. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 12 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chester Springs, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or to a charity of one’s choice.

Raymond P. Lewis

Raymond P. Lewis, 78, of Palm Desert, Calif. died Jan. 3, 2002 at Eisenhower General Hospital, Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Mr. Lewis was born March 25, 1923 in Sioux City, Iowa to Gerrit M. Lewis and Anna Kramer Lewis.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 and was vice president for Del Monte Foods for 35 years.

Mr. Lewis is survived by one son, Raymond Lewis of Walnut Creek, Calif.; two daughters, Kristine Crane of Palm Desert, Calif., and Kathleen Lewis of Palm Desert; and three sisters, Gwen, Shirley Lee and Arlene; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis Lewis.

Services for Mr. Lewis are to be held today, Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 12:30 p.m. at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona, Phoenix.

Robert Mickey

Robert Armand Mickey of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Fountain Hills, died Dec. 23, 2001 following a short illness.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; a daughter, Karen Mickey; five grandchildren, Ben, Andy and Josie Patton of Columbia, Mo. and Robert and Rachel Olson of Lexton, Ky.; stepchildren Mike Supple and wife Sandee and Lori Klopfenstein and husband Kevin; six stepgrandchildren, Monica, Racheal and Sarah Supple and Jake, Katelyn and Kallie Klopfenstein; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Mickey; nieces Becky McNichols and Susan Henderson; three grandnieces, Nichole Henderson, Shelly Steinback and Kim Warganel; and a grandnephew, Matt McNichols.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Mickey-Olson, in 1982; a brother, Ronald Mickey; a nephew, Steven Mickey; and parents Joe and Marguerite Johnston Mickey.

Robert was born April 7, 1927, in Creston, Iowa, where he graduated.

In 1948, he owned his first dealership, Mickey Kaiser Frazier, in Corning, Iowa. In 1950, he was co-owner of the Beatty Mickey Ford dealership in Creston, Iowa; in 1960, he moved to Humboldt, Iowa, and bought the Ford dealership. In 1962, he owned Schuster Manufacturing and was also president and owner of Ram Corp.

While in Humboldt, Iowa, he was a very active member of the Methodist Church. He was also a board member of Merrill Memorial Hospital, was instrumental in bringing cable TV to town and was on the board of directors of Sliefer Corp.

He then moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1980 and in 1983 purchased First Avenue Chrysler-Plymouth. Five years later he purchased Cedar Rapids Dodge. He was also owner and operator of the Chevrolet dealership in Anamosa, Iowa and Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge-Jeep in Sikeston, Mo. Robert then built the Bob Mickey Collision Center on Center Point Road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He also owned Mickey’s Place Restaurant in Fountain Hills.

Robert first married Jacqueline Mickey; they later divorced. He then married Jan McNamara Supple on Jan. 3, 1986, in Cedar Rapids.

Robert was a Shriner, a member of Chrysler & Dodge Advertising Boards (Penta Mark), National Automobile Dealers Association, Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, Iowa Fidelity Insurance Co., FireRock Country Club, Elmcrest Country Club and was a past member of Daimler-Chrysler National Dealer Council.

A memorial fund has been established for the Arthritis Foundation.
