Ethel ‘Red’ Tierney

Ethel "Red" Tierney joined her husband, Willie, in paradise on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004.

Red led a full and wonderful life and will be missed by her large family and many friends. She was born July 10, 1927 in McHenry, N.D. She was married to Col. William P. Tierney in 1950.

Red has always been active in her church, especially during the 33 years she lived in Arizona. For the past eight years she has been a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Mesa where she served as a lector, Eucharistic minister and sacristan.

She is survived by her son, Shawn Tierney (Barbara); grandchildren, Michael and Katie; three brothers, Marvin Short (Barbara), Maynard Short and Lloyd Short (Linda); a sister, Joan Anderson (Lloyd); and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m. at Messinger’s Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale, with the Rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 1534 N. Recker Road, Mesa.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association, 102 W. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85003.

Frank Potts

Frank Potts of Fountain Hills passed away after a short illness on May 23, 2004 surrounded by family members.

Born in Derby, England, Mr. Potts was reared by his mother and older siblings after his father died on the front lines of France during World War I.

Prior to entering World War II with the Sherwood Foresters, Mr. Potts worked as an apprentice and test engineer at Rolls Royce.

After service in North Africa, he was assigned to Malta where he received a battlefield commission and commanded anti-aircraft batteries on the island.

The island of Malta received the heaviest sustained bombing in history and Frank Potts contributed to the success of the Allies in overcoming the Germans and Italians in the Mediterranean theater of war. King George V granted him an order of knighthood as a Member of the Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace for his service to England and the Allies in Malta.

After being wounded with medical evacuation to England and subsequent recuperation, he was assigned to work with the British Army Staff in Washington, D.C., arriving on the HMS Queen Mary in 1944.

In the United States he became the Acting Director, North America, for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

At the end of the war he was discharged as a Major from the British Army and relocated to Canada.

In Canada, Mr. Potts worked as a mechanical superintendent for the nation’s largest bus/coach fleet and supervised major construction projects in northern Quebec as the Chief Engineer for Canada’s largest road contractor. He later managed the primary factory branch for the White Motor Company in Canada.

He and his family moved to Pennsylvania in 1957 where he joined Autocar Trucks and continued in the trucking industry in New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin until his first retirement in 1973. He subsequently developed industrial real estate in Florida before finally settling in Arizona in 1983.

After his retirement in Arizona he was active restoring cars and working on various projects, which included the award of a patent for a passive auxiliary cooler for automatic transmissions.

Mr. Potts was also an active Rotarian, Shriner and longtime member of the Fountain Hills International Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ginny (Timmers) Potts, who has been his steadfast companion for the last eight years.

He was preceded in death by Beatrice, his loving wife of 49 years and mother of their three surviving sons Frank Jr., Robert (and Virginia, his wife), Jack (and Karen, his wife),and his four grandchildren Carter, Ashley, Shannon and Jackson.

He is also survived by his first wife, Rita, and their two sons, Boyd (and Jenny, his wife), Mick (and Joy, his wife), his grandson, Jon (and Sarah, his wife), and his great-grandchildren Benjamin and Daniel, all of whom reside in England.

He will be loved and remembered by all those he touched over 88 years. He will always be a part of their lives.

A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. on June 12, 2004 at the Fountain Hills Community Center (13001 N. La Montana).

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Salvation Army, which has been such a support for those in need now and during past wars.

Anne Luke

Anne Marie Luke, 91, formerly of Fountain Hills, died May 24, 2004 in Encinitas, Calif.

Born March 20, 1913 in South Bend, Ind., the homemaker was living in Poway, Calif.

Survivors include her son, Thom Luke of Scottsdale; daughter, Judie Wilken of Poway; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Luke, in 1998.

Visitation and a service were held last week at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

Sniffen Dickens

Sniffen Steve Dickens, 88, of Fort McDowell died Jan. 5, 2000 at Life Care Center of Scottsdale.

Mr. Dickens was born June 15, 1911 at San Carlos, Ariz. He was a retired landscape laborer.

Mr. Dickens was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Fort McDowell Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Dickens is survived by 12 great grandchildren, numerous great-great grandchildren, 10 nieces and two nephews.

Services for Mr. Dickens were held Jan. 8 at the Fort McDowell Gymnasium and interment was at the Fort McDowell cemetery.

Sara Venezia

Sara Venezia, 86, of Fountain Hills died at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea on Jan. 7, 2000.

Born Jan. 1, 1914 in Huntsville, Ala., Ms. Venezia made her living as a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Alberto Venezia of Hollywood, Fla. and Pasquale Venezia of Freehold, N.J.; two daughters, Francesca Campisi of Fountain Hills and Vita Peneduro of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Venezia.

A visitation for Ms. Venezia took place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at Messinger Mortuary.

A memorial service was held in her honor at 10 a.m. yesterday, Jan. 11, at Church of the Ascension.

Interment was scheduled to take place at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

William Hughes

William P. "Bill" Hughes, 73, of Fountain Hills died Oct. 20, 2000.

Born Dec. 29, 1926 in Springfield, Ohio, Mr. Hughes worked as an accountant during his adult career.

A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he also was a member of the Fountain Hills Road Districts Board.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie of Fountain Hills; sons, William Hughes (Beth) of Locust Grove, Va. and David Hughes of Lake Havasu; daughters, Debra LaRaia (Nicholas) of Oxford, N.C., Linda Murphy (Dennis) of N. Reading, Mass., Patricia Bode of Fountain Hills and Sandra Rosenbalm (William) of Scottsdale; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation and services were held Oct. 24 at Messinger’s Mortuary. Interment was at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

John Lundin

John Frederick Lundin, 73, a winter visitor to Rio Verde, passed away Oct. 12, 2000 in Michigan.

Funeral services were held Oct. 17 at Farmington Hills Baptist Church in Farmington Hills, Mich. with the Rev. Brian Wingenroth officiating.

Interment was at Maple Hill cemetery.

He had a winter home in Rio Verde, attended Bible studies at Rio Verde Community Church and attended First Baptist Church in Fountain Hills.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine; three children, Inger Andress, Karen Pieper and Anders Lundin; and eight grandchildren.

Lawrence Studer

Lawrence "Larry" Studer, 43, of Fountain Hills, born Nov. 22, 1956 and originally from Wesley, Iowa, passed away Oct. 22, 2000 in Tempe.

Mr. Studer was a long-time employee of the Salt River Project as a power lineman. He was also active in local children’s sports activities.

As an avid outdoorsman, Mr. Studer loved rafting, hiking and camping at Potato Lake with his boys.

He is survived by his sons, Eric and Grant; their mother, Sue Mackie; his father, Donovan Studer of Algona, Iowa; and siblings Mike, Roger, Kevin, Sheila and Denise. He was preceded in death by his mother, Madonna.

Visitation will be held today, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Fountain Hills Community Church, 15202 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a children’s fund for Eric and Grant at Wells Fargo Bank.

Anthony Ghezzi

Anthony "Tony" R. Ghezzi, 35, died Sept. 30, 2000 in Mesa.

Born Sept. 5, 1965 in Canton, Ohio, Mr. Ghezzi worked as a poker dealer at the Salt River Casino.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Sheila Ghezzi; brother, Robert (Laura) Ghezzi of Las Vegas, Nev.; niece, Rachel Ghezzi; nephew, Nicholas Ghezzi; maternal grandmother, Margaret Phillips of Mesa; uncle, John (Pat) Ghezzi of Canton; aunt, Barb Ghezzi of Canton; uncle, Paul Phillips of Chicago, Ill.; and his cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 4, at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary, 12065 N. Saguaro Blvd. A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Messinger’s.

Interment will be Paradise Memorial Gardens in Scottsdale. The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 5377, Phoenix, AZ 85010.

Lucien Villeneuve

Lucien E. Villeneuve, 78, beloved husband and father, died Sept. 27, 2000 at his Fountain Hills residence.

Born Aug. 16, 1922 in Haverhill, Mass., Mr. Villeneuve worked as an insurance consultant during his adult career.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna Villeneuve; sons, Lucien Jr., Nils, Craig, Brian and Brett; daughter, Michelle; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A private family service was held. Interment was at National Memorial cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Robert Ellsworth

Robert F. "Bob" Ellsworth, 68, of Fountain Hills died Nov. 8, 2000 at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea hospital.

Born Oct. 24, 1932 in Revere, Mass., Mr. Ellsworth worked as a lithograph printer.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores; son, Robert F. Ellsworth Jr. of California; daughter, MaryLynn Ellsworth Rapp of Phoenix; brother, Nelson Ellsworth of Revere; sister, Marjorie Ellsworth Howell of Revere; two grandchildren, Jake and Dylan; and a soon-to-be-expected grandchild, Trevor Robert.

A memorial service was held Nov. 11 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, 102 W. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85003.

Edward Fritz

Edward Fritz, 70, of Fountain Hills passed away on Friday, Nov. 10.

Mr. Fritz was born Feb. 7, 2000 in Buffalo, New York. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea and is a member of the Fountain Hills American Legion Post.

Mr. Fritz worked as a general contractor for 30 years.

He is survived by four sons, Randy of New Hampshire, John of Las Vegas, Nev., Dennis of Dallas, Texas, and Jeff of Fountain Hills; one daughter, Sharon of Phoenix; and five grandchildren. His wife Marilyn preceded him in death.

There will be a memorial for Mr. Fritz at the Fountain Hills American Legion Hall on Friday, Nov. 17, at 5 p.m.

The family is suggesting memorial contributions to the Fountain Hills American Legion Post, 16850 E. Avenue of the Fountains, Suite 102, Fountain Hills, AZ 85268.

Sherman Evans

Sherman B. Evans, 65, of Fountain Hills and Thayne, Wyo. died Nov. 2, 2000.

Born Dec. 30, 1934 in Logan, Utah, Mr. Evans had worked in computer production management during his adult career.

He was a member of The Club in Fountain Hills.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Evans; sons, Eric Hick of Ft. Collins, Colo. and Brett Hick of Ft. Worth, Texas; daughters, Camille Kendrick of Palm Coast, Fla. and Allison Murphy of California; brother, Sidney of Scottsdale; sisters, Marlene Hill of Salt Lake City, Utah and Julia Berntson of Logan, Utah; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Nov. 6 at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. Interment is at Logan cemetery in Logan, Utah.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85032.
