Alex Morajko

Alex H. (Sonny) Morajko died July 2, 2001 at his home in Fountain Hills.

Son of Alexander (Walter Morajko (dec.) and Kathryn (Mleczek) Morajko (dec.), he was born and raised in Elizabeth, N.J. and later moved to Union, N.J.

He graduated oratory prep school in Summer, N.J. in 1965 and later graduated from Lincoln Tech Institute of Newark, N.J. in 1966 with a master’s auto mechanic degree.

He served an apprenticeship as tool maker for Wadell Equipment of Edison, N.J. until starting his own home improvement and tile company some 25 years ago.

Mr. Morajko lived in Union and Sparta, N.J. with his wife of 18 years, Irene (Luster) Morajko and three children, Natalianne, 15 years; Vincent, 13 years; and William (Billy), 11 years. He also helped raise more than 56 foster children in New Jersey and Arizona, where he was nominated for foster parent of the year.

Mr. Morajko and his family moved to Fountain Hills in 1991 where he continued to do tile work until recently.

He and his family built homes in Forrest City (Browndale), Pa. and Show Low, Ariz., where he spent much of his free time with close friends and family.

He loved Harley Davidson motorcycles and rode for more than 30 years. He was a member of ABATE of Arizona and the MMA of Arizona, but most of all he loved riding with his wife and two very special friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. His family loves him and misses him greatly. Be at peace.

Olga Serheeva

Olga Serheeva, 87, of Scottsdale died July 23, 2001 in Phoenix.

Mrs. Serheeva was born July 23, 1914 in Kiev, Ukraine. She was an artist.

She is survived by one son, Michael (Nadia) Serheeva of Fountain Hills; two daughters, Olga Luton of Bedminister, N.J., and Anna Dacko of Rutherford, N.J.; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Earl Tomkinson

Earl S. Tomkinson, 92, died July 23, 2001 in Scottsdale.

He was under the loving care of the Stoian family at their personal home and licensed assisted living facility on Happy Valley Road. In his last days they were assisted by Hospice of the Valley.

Mr. Tomkinson was born July 29, 1908 in Palmyra, N.Y. After graduating first in his class in Moravia, N.Y., he worked in his father’s flour mill for six years.

In 1936 he graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Syracuse University and moved with his new wife, the late Floydine Carley, to become a career employee with Caterpillar Tractor Co. until his retirement in 1973.

Mr. Tomkinson was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and was treasurer during construction of the present Lake Avenue building.

He was a 17th degree Mason (Peoria Lodge No. 15) and member of the Scottish Rite. He also was active in the Kiwanis Club and helped build its senior housing facility, London House on London Avenue in Peoria.

He lived there for 17 years until moving to Scottsdale after the death of his second wife, Molly Peeler, in 1998.

He is survived by his daughter, Joan “Tommie” Ems of Fountain Hills; two sons, Ted Tomkinson of LaGrange, Ill. and David Tomkinson of North Hampton, N.H.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 1 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, corner of El Lago and Fountain Hills boulevards.

Arrangements were handled by Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary. The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 663-6500.

Goldie C. Chieger

Goldie C. Chieger, 83, of Fountain Hills died Aug. 1, 2001 in Scottsdale.

Mrs. Chieger was born on Feb. 15, 1918 in Detroit, Mich., where she lived until 1979. Upon the retirement of her husband, George Chieger, an executive with Fruehauf Trailer Corporation, the Chiegers moved to Santa Fe.

A resident of Fountain Hills since 1994, Mrs. Chieger was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Chieger is survived by her husband of 59 years, George; daughters, Kathryn J. Chieger of Evanston, Ill. and Roxann L. Chieger of Denver; sisters, Anne Armstrong of Southfield, Mich. and Virginia Kanyo of Novi, Mich.; and her brother, Louis G. Payor of Winter Park, Fla.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church, corner of Fountain Hills and Palisades boulevards.

Velma B. Schessler

Velma Bechtold Schessler, 68, a former longtime Minot, N.D. resident died Thursday, Aug. 2 in her Payson home.

Her funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Rosehill Memorial Park. There will be a memorial service on Aug. 14 in Payson at 2 p.m. at Shepherd of the Pines Church.

Velma Busch was born Sept. 28, 1932 near Sawyer, N.D., and was the daughter of William and Irene (Hankel) Busch. She was raised and educated in Sawyer Township of Ward County and graduated from Sawyer High School.

She was united in marriage to Benjamin “Bennie” Bechtold on June 17, 1950 in Minot. They made their home throughout the years in Minot where they raised their six children along with being owners of Bechtold Excavating and Paving Company for a number of years. Bennie dies on Aug. 10, 1993.

Velma was united in marriage to Ralph Schessler on July 7, 1997. They made their home in Arizona until her death.

Velma was very active with the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Minot where she had served with the Ladies Auxiliary and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include: husband Ralph Schessler of Payson; daughters Edith (Daniel) Lade of Velva, N.D., Gail (Dan) Spilovoy of Bismark, N.D., Laurel (Vern) O’Brien of Fountain Hills, Beverly Williams of Fountain Hills, son Jerry (Elvira) Bechtold of Colorado Springs, Colo.; fifteen grandchildren; one great-great child; sister Marjorie Bechtold of Minot and brother Ronald Busch of Grand Forks, N.D.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bennie, son, Donald, brothers Vergil and Larry Busch and sister Adeline Melhoff.

Visitation will take place on Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home in Minot.

Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Dakota Boys Ranch, ALS Lou Gehrig’s Foundation or the Hospices RTA, Payson.

Mary Lou Winzenburg

Mary Lou Winzenburg, 76, of Fountain Hills died July 31, 2001 at her residence.

Born Sept. 26, 1924 in Little Falls, Minn., she was a retired school teacher.

Mrs. Winzenburg was a member of the American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.), Fountain Hills Historical Society, C. Jung Society and was an active parishioner at Church of the Ascension.

Her life was truly a journey toward finding the presence of God in all that she encountered.

Survivors include her sons, Mark (Pamela) of Naperville, Ill., Robert (Bev) of North Mankato, Minn. and Eric (Paris) of Baltimore, Md.; daughter, Mary Winzenburg of Burlington, Vt.; brother, Dr. Edward G. Huppler (Sylvia) of Little Canada, Minn.; sisters, Margaret McMillen of La Mirada, Calif., Sister Faith Huppler of Albuquerque, N.M. and Kay Mikkelson (Dale) of Fountain Hills; and 10 grandchildren.

A Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial was held at Church of the Ascension in Fountain Hills as well as a Memorial Mass and burial at Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson, Minn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, 420 W. Watkins St., Phoenix, AZ 85002.

Robert Zicarelli

Robert Francis Zicarelli, 77, of Rio Verde, born Feb. 20, 1924 in Kenosha, Wis., passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 2, 2001.

He was a nationally honored pioneer of the venture capital industry, directly and indirectly responsible for thousands of new jobs and the success of countless businesses.

He was active in his church and community, quietly supporting the growth and development of individuals with whom he came in contact.

Mr. Zicarelli served in the Army Air Force during World War II, received B.S. and MBA degrees from Northwestern University, and worked as an investment analyst for Northwestern University and the Allstate Insurance Company.

He joined Norwest Growth Fund in 1961 and served in several capacities including vice president, director, president and chief executive officer.

Norwest Growth Fund and its successor companies were one of the largest venture capital groups in the country.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary; four sons, John, Jim, Tom and David; and grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Friends of the Orphans, 424 E. Southern Avenue, suite 102, Tempe, AZ 85282; Rio Verde Community Church, 25603 Danny Lane, Rio Verde, AZ 86263; or to Faith Counseling Center, 10505 N. 69th Street, suite 600, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.

Services will be held at the Rio Verde Community Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

L. Corinne Miles

L. Corinne Miles of Fountain Hills passed away Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001 in Mesa.

Corinne, the mother of local residents Jerry Miles and Joan Pharr, was a member of P.E.O. Chapter DZ.

Born April 11, 1915 in Rocky Ford, Colo. to Walter and Imo Lane, she graduated from Rocky Ford High School. Married in 1935, Corinne and her husband, the late Virgil M. Miles, moved to Loveland, Colo. in the ‘70s. She moved to Fountain Hills in 1998.

Besides Joan and Jerry, Corinne is survived by son Thomas P. Miles, Cincinnati, Ohio; granddaughters Judy Miles and Heather Pharr; grandsons Jeffrey Douglas Miles and Derek Miles Pharr; twin great-granddaughters, Joy Kate and Jenna Marie Miles; and two nephews in Arizona, Don Recker in Gilbert and Charles Recker in Mesa.

Interment will be in Loveland. Plans for a memorial service are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fountain Hills Arts Council.

John Warren

John Hartzel Warren passed on at home in Petoskey, Mich. on Aug. 19, 2001.

He was the beloved husband of Peggy, father of John Brill, Eric Warren (Robin), Henry Brill, Roger Warren (Cheryl), Ginger Warren, Jane Horal (Dan) and Anne Lewis (Lyndon).

He is survived by his wife, children, one sister, Linda Suderman, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Warren was born in Rochester, N.Y. on March 26, 1927 to Helen (Hartzel) and Roy Warren. He graduated from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering.

He married Peggy O’Neil from Levering, Mich. on Oct. 11, 1958 and retired from General Electric in 1989.

Mr. Warren was a member of General Electric’s Elfun Society, Veteran USMC, Hamburg Rod & Gun, the local Habitat for Humanity, Petoskey/Bay View Country Club, Emmet County Sportsman’s Club and participated in building the North Country Trail.

Mr. Warren also was a member of The Club in Fountain Hills and the Red Mountain Trap & Skeet Club.

Mr. Warren, formerly of Brighton, Mich., wintered in Fountain Hills and spent summers in Petoskey. Visitation will be Aug. 23 in Michigan at the Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey.

In lieu of flowers, make contributions to Northern Michigan Hospice of Little Traverse Bay.

Helen L. Decker

Helen L. Decker of Fountain Hills did Monday, Aug. 27. She was 82-years-old.

Mrs. Decker was born on Oct. 13, 1918 in Hibbing, Minn. She was a retired architectural draftswoman and a homemaker.

She was a graduated of Delehanty Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. and a member of the Haworth Congregational Church in New Jersey.

She is survived by her husband, David Decker of Fountain Hills; son Edmund (Linda) Decker of Irvington, N.Y.; daughter Christine (Hank) Cipolaro of Fountain Hills; brother Leonard Rautio of Socorro, N.M. and four grandchildren, Julia Decker and Wendy, Janine and Tom Cipolaro.

A memorial service will be at Messinger Fountain Hills mortuary at a later date. Interment will be at the National Memorial cemetery in Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St, Phoenix, AZ, 85014.

Sigurd Kenneth Roe

Sigurd Kenneth Roe, 49, of Fountain Hills died Thursday, Aug. 23 in Scottsdale.

Mr. Roe, a construction contractor and USAF Vietnam War veteran, was born in Waukon, Iowa.

Mr. Roe is survived by his wife, Gloria; two daughters, Rhonda Johnson and Shauna Roe; one son, Shane Roe; a stepdaughter, Gina Burns; his parents, Kenneth and Darlene Roe; two sisters, Sherry Miller and Sonja Shaw; two brothers, Syvell Roe and Sherwood Roe; five grandchildren, Lindsey Marie Johnson, Dallas McRae Johnson, Chance Williams, Memory Burns and an unborn grandson.

A sister, Sandra Hernandez, precedes Mr. Roe in death.

Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 28 at City of Mesa cemetery. Meldrum Mortuary in Mesa handled arrangements.

Friends of Mr. Roe have established the Sig Roe benefit account at Community Bank Arizona, 13404 N. LaMontana Drive. The account will benefit his children and grandchildren. Anyone interested in contributing to the account may call Community Bank at 837-2786.

Lucille S. Hewitt

Lucille Sullivan “Mickey” Hewitt passed away on Sept. 6 in Scottsdale. She was 85.

No services were held.

Mrs. Hewitt was a retired vice president of government relations for McCulloch Properties, Inc. She was involved in the development of Fountain Hills, and Lake Havasu City in Arizona, Pueblo West, Colo., and Spring Creek, Nev.

She was also employed by Hearst Newspapers before joining McCulloch. In recent years she served on the board of directors of Western States Publishers.

A former Fountain Hills resident, she was living in Paradise Valley at the time of her death.

Survivors include daughter Sally and son-in-law David Jepson of Phoenix; son Arthur R. G. Hewitt of Florida, sister Nancy Rees of California and grandchildren Jennifer and Stephen Jepson of Phoenix.

Memorials are to be made to the Arizona Heart Association, 2929S. 48th St., Tempe, AZ 85282. Arrangements were made by Whitney & Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home.
