Ruth H. Sherick
Ruth H. Sherick, 94, a Fountain Hills resident since 1980, passed away Feb. 3, 2011 at her residence after a seven-month struggle with cancer of the gum.
Ruth was born Ruth H. Clemmer in Dayton, Ohio in 1916. She was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church since moving to Fountain Hills in 1980. She was also a member of the Noon Kiwanis Club.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Ted, of 45 years; daughter, Carol Hall of Urbana, Ohio; son, Charles Watkins of Fountain Hills; as well as step-children, Richard Sherick of Kettering, Ohio; step-daughters, Sue Shepherd of Atlanta, Ga., and Sharon Rothe of Marietta, Ga. She is also survived by four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, 13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
Ruth’s body will be cremated and the ashes interred in the columbarium at the church.

Marie Graham Horton
Marie Horton, a resident of Fountain View Village, Fountain Hills entered the home of the Lord on August 22, 2008 at age 88. She was born on April 13, 1920 in Dubuque, Iowa to Ed and Irene Graham and died of pancreatitis at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix.
She is survived by a daughter Mary (Tom) Davie, Fountain Hills; sons Bert (Nancy) Horton, Elk River, Minn., John Horton, Missoula, Mont.; grandchildren Mark (Sandy) Davie, Andrew Horton, Curtis (Ashle) Horton, Bristol Horton and great-grandsons Jake and Josh Davie.
Marie was preceded in death by son Richard, 1997, and siblings John, Kathryn, Joe and Irene Graham.
Marie graduated from the Visitation Academy, Dubuque, Iowa, 1938 and the College of Saint Teresa, Winona, Minn., 1942 with a B.A. in Sociology.
She married Robert S. Horton on March 6, 1943 at Fort Snelling Chapel, Minneapolis, Minn. and lived in St. Paul, Faribault and Bemidji, Minn. prior to settling in Winona in 1946 where she lived until moving to Fountain Hills in 1998.
She loved Winona, the Mississippi River and owned a summer home in Trempealeau, Wis. for many years.
Marie was a very active volunteer in Winona. She was Councilwoman at Large 1978 to 1985 and her campaign goal was “to create a better Winona to live in, to work in, to recreate in, to be educated in, to worship in, and to live peacefully.”
She was the first woman appointed to the Winona Housing and Redevelopment Authority Commission and served as secretary 1967-1977. She was a board member of the American Red Cross, chairperson of the Red Cross Bloodmobile, president of the College of Saint Teresa alumnae association, president of the Winona Alumnae Chapter of the College of Saint Teresa, member of the College of Saint Teresa Board of Trustees, member of the Community Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, member of the board of directors, Saint Anne’s Hospice, charter member and president of the League of Women Voters, president of the A.A.U.W., volunteer social worker at Winona Memorial Hospital and president of the Mt. Trempealeau Association.
Marie was recipient of the City of Winona Community Service Award, 1985, College of Saint Teresa Alumnae Citation, 1984, Certificate of Appreciation, Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, 1976, Winona Woman of the Year, 1956 and 1958, and many bridge marathon awards.
Marie’s Christian faith was very important to her and she was described as a prayer warrior. She led many prayer groups and was a student of the Bible. She was a very caring person and had a deep love for God, family and friends.
Memorial Services will be held on Sept. 13 at Fountain Hills Christian Center followed by lunch at Fountain View Village. A memorial service will also be held on Oct. 4, in Winona, Minn.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Home Missions of Fountain Hills Christian Center or the Arizona Transplant House, Scottsdale.
Terence ‘Ted’ McQuiston
Terence “Ted” McQuiston, a former resident of Fountain Hills, passed away Aug. 24, 2008 in Cookeville, Tenn.
Ted, as he liked to be called, was born in LaPorte, Tenn. to Clayton and Mildred McQuiston and, in the years to follow, married Marian “Miki” Comerford, who preceded him in death.
Ted was a retired letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Elks, B.P.O.E., a past commander of American Legion Post No. 57 and a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Fountain Hills Post No. 7507 as well as a district commander for the VFW.
He is survived by his daughters Cindi Champion of San Antonio, Texas and Pamela Golliet, Seattle, Wash.; a son, Douglas Frizzelle, Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Hazel Starmer, Mary Helen Garner (Bob) and Lura McQuiston; and a host of nieces and nephews. Two brothers, William Wedge McQuiston and Melvin McQuiston preceded him in death.
Visitation and funeral services were held at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary on Sept. 2. Burial was at the National Memorial cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix following the service.
Charles K. Blank
Charles Kenneth Blank, born July 13, 1931 passed away peacefully in his home on July 2, 2011 at the age of 79 in Fountain Hills, where he had moved in 1999.
A longtime resident of Cedarburg, Wis., he is survived by his wife, Betty (nee Guerin); son, David (Donna) Blank of West Des Moines, Iowa; and their children, Tommy and Alex. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Sherry (Mark) Denton of Ft. Worth, Texas; and their children, Sarah and Jay; Jim (Lynne) O’Reilly of Minneapolis, Minn.; and their children, Elizabeth, Ali and Teddy; and Tom O’Reilly of Mequon.
Chuck was a graduate of Cedarburg High School and received an accounting degree from the University of Wisconsin. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he returned to Cedarburg to begin his career at Cedarburg Mutual Insurance. Chuck retired from CMI in 1998 as COO.
Chuck was an active supporter of the Cedarburg community. He was Charter Secretary of the Cedarburg/Grafton Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the board of the Cedarburg State Bank, and was also an active supporter of the Cultural Center and Cedarburg Landmark Preservation Society.
Chuck was an avid Lake Michigan sailor. He began racing boats in the Lightning class at the Milwaukee Yacht Club and was one of the founding members of the Soling Fleet. He was Past Commodore of the MYC (’75-’76) and was named the Merritt Hayes Yachtsman of the Year in 1990 that honors the “true Corinthian who exemplifies dignity, humility, integrity and sportsmanship.” Chuck also enjoyed skiing and was a member of Heiliger Huegel Ski Club, and a director in 1975. He was one of the first to have “buckle boots” and Head metal skis.
Chuck found great peace in The Lord in his battle with cancer, and entered into His arms with the knowledge that he will be with all of us again in Paradise.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m., service at 11 a.m. and a light luncheon immediately following on Thursday, July 7, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 13770 North Fountain Hills Blvd.
A gathering to remember and celebrate Chuck’s life will be held in Cedarburg, Wis. later this summer or fall.

Stephen J. Hatch
Kimberly D. Hatch
Stephen James Hatch, 46, and his beloved wife, Kimberly Dawn Hatch, 44, both died in a tragic plane crash Friday, June 24, 2011 in Charlevoix, Mich.
Son Austin James Hatch survived the crash and is hospitalized. Inspirational to so many, Steve and Kim were devoted to their family, serving others, and honoring God (www.caringbridge.org).
Stephen was born in Saginaw, Mich., attending Saints Peter and Paul High School. Stephen was a devoted husband, father, brother, son and uncle.
He was an anesthesiologist and partner in Pain Management Associates in Fort Wayne, Ind., a medical and business leader in the community, a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church and Blackhawk Ministries, was involved with Canterbury School and Smith Air Field, and was committed to supporting a number of charities and organizations.
He loved being heavily involved in his children's lives, especially mentoring their youngest son, Austin James, as a student athlete. He was so proud to see him commit to play basketball for the University of Michigan in 2013.
Kimberly was born in Fort Wayne, Ind. She was a member of Blackhawk Ministries and involved in Canterbury School where their son, Austin James, is a junior. She was a generous and loving servant of God’s work on earth, and a mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend without compare.
Like her husband Stephen, Kimberly was a supporter and advocate for a number of charities and events, especially the small group of girls she mentored every Sunday evening and every time they called on her. She was deeply committed to others and gave her time and energy continually.
Steve was preceded in death by his first wife, Julie Lynne Siwik Hatch; children, Lindsay Katherine and Ian Michael, who were always close to the family’s hearts.
Survivors of Steve and Kim include son, Austin James Hatch, expecting daughter, Maria Hatch Bowersock (husband Jason Bowersock), daughter Brittnee (Neal) Hatch (and fiancé Jarred Burns), and son, Austin Thomas (Neal) Hatch, all of Fort Wayne, Ind.
Parents of Stephen, Peg and Jim Hatch of Fountain Hills, and Petoskey, Mich.; mother of Kimberly, Anna Russo of Fort Wayne, Ind.; grandmother of Stephen, Frances B. Hatch of Saginaw, Mich.; grandmother of Kimberly, Josephine Russo, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Steve’s sister, Julie Burk of Valparaiso (brother-in-law Dennis; nephews, Jordan and Evan, and niece Hanna); Steve’s brother, Michael Hatch of Pasadena, Calif. (sister-in-law Ellen; nephews, James and Andrew); Kimberly’s sister, Laura Cox of Fort Wayne, Ind. (brother-in-law Tom, nieces, Nicole and Rachel), and many, many other loving friends and relatives.

Edward C. Plambeck
Edward C. Plambeck, 94, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2011 in Fountain Hills.
He was born on July 7, 1916 in Chicago, Ill. and married Bernice Arnesen on June 19, 1937 (deceased since July 4, 1994). He is survived by his sister-in-law, Evelyn Plambeck of Peoria, Ariz. and Florence Arnesen of Elk Grove, Ill.; daughters, Sandra Francke of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Susan Lewandowski and son-in-law, Robert Lewandowski of Fountain Hills; grand children, Dawn and husband, Mike Lizanich of Scottsdale, Greg and wife, Denise Lewandowski of Cave Creek, Kathy and husband, Ruben Nazario of Village of Lakewood, Ill. and Jennifer Kardos of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; great grandchildren, Michael Lizanich and Lauren Lizanich of Scottsdale, Autumn and husband, David Ashworth of San Francisco, Calif., Daniel Nazario, Michael Nazario and Matthew Nazario of Village of Lakewood, Ill., and Nicole Kardos of Buffalo Grove, Ill.

Jack G. Spence
Jack Spence, Ret. CWO-4, passed away Sept. 8, 2011, at the age of 75. Jack retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1978 after 25 years of patriotic service for his country.
After retiring, Jack and his late wife, Mary, moved to El Paso, Texas. After Mary’s passing in 1998, Jack moved to Fountain Hills where he found many great friends in this wonderful community.
Jack will always be loved and remembered by many family members; daughters, Kim Spence and Jody Hewett; son-in-law, Johnny Hewett; grandchildren, Kristal Jones, her husband, G Sgt. Timothy Jones, Jaclyn Seaman, Lori Allyn, and her husband, Jimmy, Johnny Hewett, Jr. and his wife, Kelsey, Jamie Hewett-Staner, and her partner, Deanna; great-grandchildren, Brendan Jones, Caitlin Jones, Taylor Hewett, Katie Allyn, Kynley Hewett, Maclayne Hewett and Noah Hewett-Staner.

Betty Daly
Proverbs 31:28-30: Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest above them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be exalted.
Betty Daly, 86, of Fountain Hills, passed away peacefully at her residence Sept. 14, 2011.
She was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Eau Claire, Wis. to Robert and Bertha (Bethke) Bramer. She graduated from Eau Claire High School Class of ‘43. She moved from Wisconsin to Phoenix in 1952 and was employed as a ballroom dance instructor at Arthur Murray’s School of Dance.
An accomplished dancer, she was the recipient of many trophies and accolades, winning many Medal Ball Awards. She credited her training with Arthur Murray for bringing out her ability to see and promote the talents of others.
To always see the good in others - an attribute that she claimed greatly helped her in her future role as a minister’s wife. It was at Murray’s where she met and married the love of her life, Thomas Daly, on Sept. 17, 1954. She left Murray’s to start her family and soon after she followed husband Tom as he began his journey into the ministry.
She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. She enjoyed dancing, singing in the choir, quilting, baking (she was famous for her apple pie recipe), and entertaining with friends.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and husband. She is survived by her children; son, Rev. Thomas Daly of Fountain Hills; daughter, Kathleen Daly-Unfricht, (Philip) of Ahwatukee; grandchildren, Thomas Daly of Hartford, Conn. and Jonathan Daly of Bloomington, Ill.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 13770 N. Fountain Hills Blvd., Fountain Hills, on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m.

Gary L. Beach
Gary Beach of Mesa, owner of Town & Country Landscaping, passed away on Sept. 26, 2011 at his home.
Gary was born in Herrin, Ill. to George and Christina V. Beach (deceased). He was a graduate of Herrin High School and Southern Illinois University with a degree in forestry. Gary was one of the few who knew the Latin name for every greenery.
He is survived by his fiancé, Judy Kaainoa, of Mesa; son, Greg Beach (Tracey); grandchildren, Devon, Vanna Lee and Treg, of Georgia; daughter, Leanne Mausey (Brian); granddaughter, Paige of Illinois; two cousins, Tom (Sandy) Adams of Illinois, and Sally Stephens of Fountain Hills; and lastly, Freckles II, his Command anti (a cockatiel). While Gary was recently hospitalized, Freckles asked, “Where is papa?”
Gary will never be forgotten, especially in Fountain Hills, as he designed and planted at so many new home communities, and single family homes. He was respected in landscape circles and known as a friend by many.
If Gary worked on your home, remember him as you gaze upon his plantings of flowers, trees and shrubs since 1986 throughout the Valley.

Robert T. Crawford
Robert Thompson Crawford, 95, passed away Sept. 29, 2011 in Mesa.
Born April 11, 1916 in Songli, India, Robert was the son of Rev. Frank and Kate Crawford, missionaries for the Presbyterian Church. He was raised in Bovina Center, N.Y. and Middletown, Ohio and lived in Columbus, Ohio and Fountain Hills.
Robert was educated in Middletown High School, Muskingum College and Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and was the co-owner of Campus Neil Drug Store in Columbus, Ohio.
Robert was a member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church and previously Overbrook Presbyterian Church in Columbus where he was a member of the choirs. He was a member of the Shrine Chanters in Arizona and Ohio, a longtime member of the Fountain Hills Community Chorus and sang with the Vaudevilleties in Columbus for many years. Robert enjoyed golf, bowling, Ohio State University sports and chorus/choirs.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Sears Crawford; a brother, Rev. James A. Crawford; and sister, Blanche (Ross) Ball. He is survived by his sister, Florence (Lewis) Hill, Middletown, Ohio; daughter, Linda (John) Wilson, Gahanna, Ohio; grandson, Robert (Michele) Wilson; great grandchildren, Kendal and Griffin Wilson, Toledo, Ohio; and grandson, Scott (Melissa) Wilson, Charlotte, N.C.
There will be a memorial service Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m.

Bertha L. Eldred
Bertha “Bert” Louise Eldred went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 25, 2011 at the age of 87.
She was born June 20, 1924 in Stamford, Conn., lived in Dearborn Heights, Mich. from 1956-79 and moved to Fountain Hills in 1979.
Bert was a wonderful devoted wife to her husband. They met in 1943 when Arthur was in the U.S. Navy and they were married for 67 years.
She worked at the A&P grocery store in Michigan; she retired from American Airlines in 1981, and worked at the Safari Resort approximately 18 years.
She enjoyed shopping and fashion, shopping at Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and playing cards. She was a remarkable woman and a great friend. Bert always wanted to know what was going on with people as she really cared about what was happening in their lives.
She enjoyed parties and traveling. She saw a large amount of the world like Rome, Naples, London, the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Hawaii and Mexico.
Her faith gave her peace, comfort and strength. She loved many and she was loved by many. She made so many of us laugh and she will be missed so much.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Karolina Kulbeida, her father, Stefan Kulbeida; her sisters, Barbara and Catherine and her brothers, Steven and Michael.
She survived by her husband, Arthur. Although she did not have any children of her own, she has many nieces and nephews that she adored.
The memorial service will be on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Messinger Mortuary in Fountain Hills at 4:30 p.m. She will be laid at rest in St. John’s Catholic cemetery in Darien, Conn.
