Deborah Elizabeth Provenza
Deborah Elizabeth Provenza, 55, died unexpectedly Friday, August 20, 2010 at her home in Show Low.
Deborah was born March 18, 1955, in Reno, Washoe County, Nv. to the late Harold Pierson and Elizabeth Jane (Aylward) Deering. She was orphaned as a young girl and quickly became a "grown-up" while still a child. She knew the value of a good education and received a master's degree and was specialist as a mental health therapist.
As a young woman, Deborah enlisted in the United States Navy and served six years before she received her honorable discharge at the age of 24. She was a very tender-hearted individual and received a special kind of joy as she learned to serve others throughout her life. She believed that when she was in the service of others, she was expressing her love to God.
She moved to Arizona 12 years ago from Peoria, Il. and met the love of her life, Kirsten Hendershot. Together, they celebrated their commitment to each other in a special garden ceremony at their home in 2001. Deborah was blessed with a "green-thumb" and made a showplace out of their back yard, planting some ot the prettiest flowers around. She even built a pond there and truly made a beautiful park setting right at her own home.
Deborah was an avid reader and was also an artist on so many levels. She could draw and sketch just about anything. She also loved photography. She was able to make many dozens of books of her photos that she gave to her family and many friends. They truly now are considered treasures by them. Some of Deborah's greatest joys came from her love of animals. She loved pets and at the time of her passing, owned six cats and four dogs. They were considered part of her family.
Being the service oriented individual that she was, Deborah literally volunteered hundreds and thousands of hours helping those in need. She volunteered regularly for Pet Allies. Deborah worked for Catholic Charities, Community Counseling and the Arizona Children's Association. She worked for many years as a mental health therapist at several locations in the White Mountain area. She even worked a few years for RTA Hospice (now Hospice Compassus) as a grief therapist. No matter what the task was at hand, she always gave it her all.
When she was able, she enjoyed to travel. She truly appreciated the beauty she found right here in the State of Arizona; from its deserts to its snow-covered mountains. Deborah just loved being outdoors and appreciated the creations she saw there. She also had the opportunity to travel abroad including: Italy, Costa Rica and Alaska. Many of her photographs were taken as she traveled.
This beautiful, vibrant woman will be missed by many, but none will miss her more than those whom she called family. Deborah is survived by her partner, Kirsten Hendershot of Show Low; sister Becky (Bill) Hancock of Gilbert; mother and father-in-law Hal and Marty Hendershot of Denver, Co.; two nieces Jennifer and Andrea and nephews Rich and B.J.
Family and friends are invited to gather at a special memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at her family home, 3140 E. Larson Way in Show Low where Chaplain Kevin Weaver will officiate.

Louis Abner ‘Sam’ Porter
Louis Abner "Sam" Porter died peacefully Saturday, Aug. 21 in Mesa.
He was born in 1921 in Apache Creek, N.M. to Joseph Baxter Porter and Emily Locket Gambel Porter, where he worked on the family's farm and ranch, and attended high school in nearby Reserve.
He volunteered for the Army Air Corps during World War II and eventually became a flight trainer, stationed mostly at airfields in Texas. He earned a baccalaureate and a masters degree from Oklahoma State University, and was a well respected and innovative educator for more than 30 years. He taught at Reserve High School from 1953-62, and founded the school's agriculture department and Future Farmers of America chapter. He moved to Tularosa, N.M. in 1962 where he taught at Tularosa High School and also founded that school's agriculture department and FFA chapter. He moved to Magdalena, N.M. in 1971 where he served as high school principal until 1975. He also taught special education at Mary C. O'Brien School, in Pinal County. In 1980 he moved to Young where he founded that school's agriculture department and FFA chapter. He then returned to the Valley and taught at Phoenix Indian School from 1982-86. He lived in Florence from 1998-2004; he was a frequent visitor and volunteer at the Dorothy Nolan Senior Center.
He is survived by his daughter Barbara Schultz of Apache Junction; sons Kenneth of Casa Grande; Preston of Coolidge; Louis of Apache Junction; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister Alice Dyer of Eagar; brothers David of Show Low; and Melvin of Sun City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Horace, Preston and Eugene; and sister Annie Locket McMahan.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Mountain View Mortuary, 7900 E. Main Street in Mesa. Services will also be held at Reserve Presbyterian Church in Reserve, N.M. at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1. Interment will follow at the Apache Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Southwest, 450 N. Dobson Rd., Ste. 108, Mesa, AZ, 85201. Donations can also be made to the Dorothy Nolan Senior Center, PO Box 2670, Florence, AZ, 85232; and to the Reserve Senior Center, Reserve, NM, 87830.
Richard Van Stee Peterson
Richard Van Stee Peterson went home to the Lord Friday, Aug. 20, 2010. He was born Aug. 9, 1948, to Norman Leverne
Peterson and Evelyn June Van Stee Peterson in Erie, Pa.
Richard grew up in Pennsylvania before moving to Greeley, Co. during junior high school. He graduated from Greeley Central High in 1966. He served four years in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Iwo Jima and then married his sweetheart, Bobbi, in the Manti Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sept. 1973. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1976.
Richard and Bobbi and their family moved to Flagstaff in 1986, where Richard worked as a rural carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He transferred to the Lakeside Post Office in 2005. He and Bobbi made their home in Pinetop at that time and enjoyed the small town atmosphere of the White Mountains. He served in various callings in the LDS Church throughout his life.
Richard was known for his sense of humor and his devotion to his family and church. He loved to read and was well read on a variety of subjects. He enjoyed hiking Arizona trails and visiting new places on vacation. He and his brothers spent a month in Europe last fall, where they met people in Holland and Sweden who helped them trace genealogy.
He is survived by his wife Bobbi (Roberta Anne Barber Peterson) of almost 37 years; sons Spencer (Iris) of Richland, Wash. and Mitchell (Vanessa) of North Logan, Utah and Grant of Flagtaff; five grandchildren Tyler, Hanna, Makayla, Dallin and Cheyenne; two brothers, Chuck and Norm and their families have been a great support throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by daughter Alyssa Renee Peterson, who died in the Army in Iraq in 2003, and his parents.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at Norvel Owens Mortuary in Flagstaff. There will be a viewing at the LDS Church at 2401 E. Linda Vista Dr. in Flagstaff at 9 a.m. followed by the funeral also at the church starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. Interment will follow at Citizens Cemetery in Flagstaff, where Richard will be buried in the Veterans section next to his daughter. A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Sept. 11, at the Buck Springs Rd. LDS Church in Pinetop.
Alvin H. Dodge
Alvin H. Dodge, 90, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at his residence in St. Johns. He was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Central, Az. Alvin served his country in the US Army, 314th Battalion, in World War II and was a union member carpenter.
He enjoyed working in construction, remodeling homes, and building bird houses to rocking chairs. He enjoyed camping, the game of horse shoes, rock hunting, and gardening. Alvin loved spending time with family and friends.
Alvin is survived by his wife Corina Romero Dodge; daughters Sharon Taylor and Eloise Stowell; step-children Jake (Gabie) Romero, Sandra (Louie) Leyba, Joe (Ramona) Romero, James (Reneé) Romero, Julian (Angela) Romero, Le Roy Romero, Josie (Kirby) Mineer, Chris (Cheryl) Romero, Lawrence (Danilee) Romero, Frank (Mary) Romero, Corina Romero, Paul (Sharlene) Romero, Nancy (Ken) Newton and Maria (Patrick) Watson; 43 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Rodney Dodge, daughter Ellen Dodge and step-son Mike Romero.
A viewing was held Aug. 26, at Barth Hall, St. Johns. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. in Central, Arizona. Interment will follow the service.

June Benson Roberts
June Benson Roberts, 84, died quietly at the Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Show Low where she received loving and tender care from its ICU doctors and nursing staff.
June was born one of six children June 8, 1926, in Dell Rapids, Minnehaha County, S.D. to the late John William and Anna Josephina (Eliason) Benson. Throughout her working life, June worked as a real estate agent and was quite successful in her chosen profession.
She moved to Arizona in Nov. of 2003 and most recently lived in Pinetop with her friends, the Hesselton Family, who cared for her daily needs. June will also be missed by her dear and special friend, Cecil.
She is survived by her children Judy Irene of Libertyville, Il., Billie Hoover of Concho, Steven Eugene Roberts of Overland Park, Ks.; brother Carl Eugene Benson of Washington State; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Along with her husband, Billie Forest Roberts (May of 2003), she was preceded in death by three sisters Ingrid Nelson, Betty Moss, Lee Irby and brother Emil Benson.
Private services will be held at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Billie Roberts.

Andrea Kay Altaha
In loving memory of Andrea Kay Altaha also known as "Kayla" entered into rest Aug. 19, 2010 in Mesa. She was born Dec. 12, 1986, in Whiteriver.
Andrea will be remembered and loved by her companion Garren Edwards; mother Julia Smith; father Bryan Altaha; sisters Requel Altaha, Kelly Baylish; brothers Isaiah Altaha, Emanuel Altaha, Ryan Altaha; godfather Moryor Lee; godmother Angeline Lee; god sister Chandler Lee; god brother Cooper Lee and many relatives and friends.
She is united with Jonathan "Boss" Smith.
A two-night wake will be held starting at 10 a.m. Thursday Aug. 26, at Sally Palmer's residence in Whiteriver (Another World #111). Home funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Saturday, Aug. 28, at the family home in Whiteriver with Pastor Floyd Dosela officiating. Interment will be at the Dove St. Cemetery in East Fork.

Leilen Glen Anderson
Beautiful beloved son Leilen Glen Anderson, has gone to be with our Father in Heaven Aug. 17, 2010. He was born at Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, weighing just 4 pounds 6 ounces at 1:37 p.m. He will always be loved and missed.
Leilen is survived by his mother Kimberly Michele Nix; father Shane Glen Anderson both of Show Low; maternal grandparents Amy and Chris Wheeler and Bill Frye; paternal grandparents Amy Jackson and Jason Harrison and Brad Anderson; great grandparents Jeanne Nix and Mike Nix, Sally and LT Jackson, Ron and Vicki Wheeler, Cathy Frye and Patricia Anderson; as well as his aunts Natasha, Alexandria, Makena Frye and Stacie Anderson; uncles Ronald Wheeler, Bradlee Anderson, Brendan Harrison and Donald Sterbutzel and many cousins, loved ones and friends.
Leilen was preceded in death by Arah and Herbert Russ, Myron and Idanelle Perkins and Lee T. Anderson.
A visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Owens Livingston Mortuary, White Mountain Chapel, 320 N. 9th Street in Show Low with a grave side service to follow at the Burton Cemetery.

Curtis Blair Chapman
Curtis Blair Chapman, 51, of Snowflake died at his home Aug. 14, 2010, of natural causes. He was born July 21, 1959, in Mesa and grew up in Chandler and has lived in Snowflake for 26 years.
Curtis worked as a heavy equipment operator and could run all types of machinery. He enjoyed camping and hunting and being with those he cared for. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by fiancé Debbie Van Winkle of Snowflake; sons Ryan and Tanner Chapman; daughter Jamie Endeman; grandson Mason Ford Endeman; parents Fullmer A. and LaDonna Chapman of Taylor; brothers Edward Chapman of Taylor, Phillip Chapman of Oregon and Joel Chapman of Taylor; sisters Jana Turley of Snowflake and Adele Chapman of Taylor.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 19, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Centennial Chapel.
Interment followed at the Reed Hatch Memorial Cemetery of Taylor.
Ryan Redford Shoemaker
November 13, 1982 - May 19, 2012
Ryan Shoemaker, 29 of Show Low departed his earthly life on May 19, 2012. He was born Nov. 13, 1982 in Louisville, KY and moved to Show Low at the age of six. He attended local schools and worked a variety of jobs where he learned many crafts in the construction field and became a tower climber.
Ryan was known by family/friends as the most kind-hearted, generous person they knew. He was always thoughtful of others, very giving and incredibly funny with his antics and comedic impressions. Missed will be the great lingering hugs he gave. He loved living in nature and enjoyed the outdoors on the water of any lake in a boat or on his canoe. He also enjoyed camping, fishing and cooking on the grill, his specialty, and playing his guitar.
He is survived by his mother, Donna Shoemaker, Show Low, AZ; father, Redford Shoemaker, Tulsa, OK; sister, Summer Shoemaker, Mesa, AZ; Paternal Grandparents, Floyd and Norma Shoemaker, Virginia Beach, VA; Maternal Grandfathers, Enos Rountree, Tonto Basin, AZ and Norman Gardiner, Mesa, AZ; his Aunt, Gail (Mark) Brill, Payson,AZ: uncle, Steven (Kathy) Rountree, Mesa, AZ and his beloved Nieces and Nephew, Julia Turney, Kaitlyn Turney, Ethan Turney, all of Show Low, AZ and Naveah Wood, of Queen Creek, AZ: also aunts, Mari Caroland, Apache Junction, AZ and Dianna Provencio, Chandler, AZ and uncle, Norm Gardiner, Mesa, AZ.

Roy Woodrow Crabb, Jr.
February 6, 1942 - May 21, 2012
Roy Woodrow Crabb, Jr. died in the hours just before sunrise on Monday, May 21, 2012 at home in Show Low, Navajo County, Arizona following a lengthy illness. He was 70 years old. Roy was born on February 6, 1942 in North Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania to his parents, the late Roy Woodrow Crabb, Sr. and Jennie Louise Mason Crabb.
As a young man he served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Lt. Col., Retired Air Force and was a decorated pilot from the Vietnam War. He was a true "hero" in the eyes and hearts of, not only his family but, many of his comrades as well as millions of his fellow Americans. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Roy began a long and successful career as an airline pilot for Southwest Airlines. He was well-liked by everyone whomever had the opportunity to work with him and found him to be responsible with every aspect of his chosen profession.
He moved to Arizona 18 years ago and spent the last few years living in Show Low. He loved the beauty of the White Mountains and always felt a special peace there. Following his retirement, Roy found many ways to pass the time away. During the winter months, he could frequently be found "burning up the slopes", as he was an avid snow skier. He was always a loving husband throughout his marriage to his devoted wife. He loved to travel throughout the world with her and some of his happiest moments in life were spent with her driving all over the country in their R.V. Roy was a great example to his sons and showed them daily, what being a father truly meant. He enjoyed spending as much time with them as he could and when his granddaughter was born, his joy grew ten-fold. Roy lived life to the fullest and he completed his life on earth with "No Regrets."
Roy is survived by his wife, Rita Marie (Fromen) Crabb of Show Low, Arizona; 2 sons: Christopher (Missy) Crabb of Surprise, Arizona, Matthew Crabb of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; 1 brother, Jim Crabb of Portland, Oregon and his granddaughter, Brianna Crabb.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Roy's family is thankful for all of the sympathies expressed to them and are especially grateful for all the prayers offered up on their behalf. They also would like to publicly send a special "Thank-you" out to Hospice Compassus for the tender care they gave Roy during his last days in this life. You are all heaven sent.
Steven Phillip Lupe
April 15, 1932 - May 20, 2012
Surrounded by his loving family, Steven Phillip Lupe died in the very early morning hours of Sunday, May 20, 2012 at the Whiteriver Indian Hospital in Whiteriver, Navajo County, Arizona following a lengthy illness. He was 80 years old. Steven was born on April 15, 1932 in Cibecue, Navajo County, Arizona to his parents, the late John and Ruby (Velasquez) Lupe.
Steven served in The U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a Staff Sargeant and his whole family was so proud of the sacrifices he made during that time of his life. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Steven worked on several ranches throughout the state of Arizona and was a reliable ranch hand. He later was a stock contractor for many years at hundreds of rodeos throughout the state. Steven also had a competitive edge when it came to rodeoing and loved to compete in team roping as well as calf roping events. He was quite good at it, too. At the time of his death, Steven was still actively working as a livestock inspector. He was a true family man and was a loving husband and father and was very proud of each of his grandchildren; especially those that were involved in rodeo. Steven was a simple man who was a friend to everyone.
Steven is survived by his: wife, Norma of Whiteriver, Arizona; 8 children: Barry, Fernando, Leo, Steven, Jr., Beverly, Joy, Candy, Gail; 20 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Ida Early. Steven was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon; 3 brothers: Adam, Preston, Roger; 2 sisters: Rose and Bessie.
A one night wake for Steven will begin 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at the Lupe Family residence in Whiteriver. The funeral service will begin 9:00 A.M., Thursday, May 24, 2012, J 7 Roping Arena. The concluding service and interment will immediately follow at the Open Range Cemetery in Cibecue. Services will be officiated by Father Ed Fronske.
