Marjorie Thompson
1925 — 2008

Marjorie Thompson, formerly of Sedona, died June 26 in Shelton, Wash.
The wife of Russell Thompson, Marjorie will be remembered lovingly by her children; Sharon Murch, Suzanne Olson and Richard Chaney; and four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She will be greatly missed by her friends.
A Celebration of Life on Monday, July 28, at 3 p.m., will be in the Great Room of the Sedona Creative Life Center, 333 Schnebly Hill Road, with Rev. Joel Boyd of the World Fellowship Church presiding.

Harold P. Morgan
Feb. 15, 1918 —July 8, 2008

Harold P. Morgan, 90, of Cornville, died July 8.
Morgan was a “cowboy poet,” and enjoyed playing the piano and guitar. He was a self-employed carpenter and home builder, as well as the owner and operator of Morgan Building Supplies and Lumber Yard.
Morgan is survived by his sons, John [Virginia] Morgan, Clarence Edward [Susan] Morgan and Jim [Kathy] Morgan; and his daughter, Rosie [Jerry] Alcorn.
No local services are planned. Send donations to any preferred Verde Valley Hospice organization.

Robert J. Eggert, Sr.
Dec. 11, 1913 — Nov. 16, 2007

A Memorial service for Robert J. Eggert, Sr., will take place at The Church of the Red Rocks on June 21, at 11 a.m.
Eggert, nationally known for his role in developing consensus economic forecasting, moved to Sedona in 1976 and died in Cottonwood at the age of 93.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Robert J. Eggert Sr.’s name to the National FFA Foundation, PO Box 68960, Indianapolis, IN, 46268.

Eloise Smiley
May 3, 1926 — May 23, 2008

Eloise Westlake Smiley, 82, of Sedona, died peacefully May 23.
Smiley deeply cared about her family and supported them in everything they ever did.
Preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Richard; sister, Betty Mae Davis; brothers Eugene and Robert Westlake; Smiley is survived by sons Glen [Donna] and Jim Smiley [Rhonda]; daughter, Ann Conrad [Richard]; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
The family requests that those wishing to remember her say a prayer for her and her family.

J. Fred Bonaker
Friday, June 13, 2008

J. Fred Bonaker, 93, of Sedona died June 13 at Sedona Winds in the Village of Oak Creek.
Bonaker was a lifelong Freemason, master craftsman, violinist, whistler, volunteer and loving family man.
Preceded in death by his wife, Ada; daughter, Donna; son, Jack; and a sister, June; Bonaker is survived by a daughter, SanDee Kinnen, of Sedona; a son, Peter, of Denver; and four grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Sedona Public Library or Sedona Masonic Lodge #14.

Margaret Gorton
March 2, 1926 — Aug. 12, 2008

Margaret “Peggy” Gorton, 82, of Sedona, died Aug. 12.
Margaret married Kenneth Gorton, a career Air Force officer. Her life’s journey included a degree from the University of Redlands, teaching and working for U.S. Sen. and Gov. Pete Wilson. She served three years in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leon.
Gorton is survived by three children; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at the Sunset Village Mobile Home Park in Sedona on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m.

Danny Rhodes
Friday, May 23, 2008

Danny Rhodes, 58, of Cottonwood, died Friday, May 23.
Born in Cairo, Ill., Rhodes was a well-known musician, entertainer and composer.
Rhodes is survived by his wife, Lisa; sons Gabriel and Aaron, of Cottonwood; daughter Ruby Jude Randall, of Tucson; brothers Robbie, of Louisiana, and Scott, of Texas; and two grandsons.
A memorial service will take place Saturday, May 31, at Riverfront Park in Cottonwood at 10 a.m.

Judith S. Anderson
Saturday, June 7, 2008

Judith S. Anderson, 64, of Sedona, formerly of Eden Prairie, Minn., died June 7.
Anderson is survived by her loving husband, David, of 38 years; siblings Joyce [Terry] Angell, Carolyn Samuelson, Ron [Delaine] Sorensen; in-law Doug [Cindy] Anderson and many nieces and nephews. A private family service took place in Sedona and a celebration of Anderson’s life will be scheduled at a later date.
Memorials preferred to RTA Hospice of Sedona.

Arnold W. Johnson
June 8, 1912 — July 26, 2008

Arnold W. Johnson, 96, of Sun Lakes, died July 26 in Sedona at his son’s home.
Johnson had served as the Elks Grand Exalted Ruler in Alliance, Neb.; lived in Casper, Wyo.; and upon retiring in 1986, he and his wife, Dolores, moved to Sun Lakes.
Preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; Johnson is survived by his son, Kenneth; a daughter, Sandra Handy; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Services took place in Sun Lakes.

Amy M. Speer
Feb. 5, 1925 — May 16, 2008

Amy Mae Pace Speer, 83, of Sedona, died May 16 at Kachina Point Health Care.
Speer was preceded in death her husband, Richard Speer; three sisters; two brothers; and is survived by two daughters, Sara [Elliott] Douglass, of Greentown, Ind., and Brenda [Jesse] Miles, of Cottonwood; and three grandsons.
A Memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Mundell Christian Church in Heltonville, Ind.

Elizabeth Hays
Saturday, July 26, 2008

Elizabeth “Betty” Hays, 78, of Flagstaff, died on July 26, after suffering a stroke in May. She had lived and worked in the Sedona area since 1969. She and her late husband operated Chris’s American Service Station at the corner of Highway 89A and Willow Way. She had last worked in Tlaquepaque at the Storyteller Bookstore, which she loved.
Hays was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus “Chris”; and is survived by her daughter, Amanda; and three grandchildren.

John R. Spease
Dec. 9, 1925 — Aug. 4, 2008

John Richard “Jack” Spease, 82, of Sedona, died Aug. 4.
An Army veteran during World War II, Spease received the Purple Heart.
Spease is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons Steven [Irmi] Spease and John [Laurie] Spease; daughters Stacey [David] Spease and Nancy [Greg] Spease; a brother, Gene Carroll; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are on Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 100 Arroyo Pinon Drive.
Donations to the Humane Society of Sedona or St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

Mary C. McManus
Oct. 31, 1911 — July 24, 2008

Mary Caroline McManus, 96, of Sedona, died Thursday, July 24.
Robert E. McManus married Mary in 1940, and they retired to Sedona in 1981.
Preceded in death by three brothers; McManus is survived by her husband, Robert E. McManus; a daughter, Katherine M. Noll; a son, Dennis R. McManus; and four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations to: Sedona Public Library or Kachina Point Health Center.
