Robert Alleman Hitz
July 19, 1913 — Oct. 22, 2009

Robert Alleman Hitz, 96, died Oct. 22.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene. He is survived by three daughters, Susan (John) Ey, Mary Miller and Barbara Roark; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Upon retirement, Hitz and his wife moved to Sedona, later relocating to Tucson.
A Memorial Service will be Thursday, Oct. 29, 2 p.m., at Oro Valley United Church of Christ, 1401 E. El Conquistador Way, Tucson.
Donations: Oro Valley United Church of Christ or charity of your choice.

John A. Hopkins
Sept. 18, 1964 – May 20, 2007

John Anthony Hopkins, 42, a former 20-year resident of Sedona, died May 20.
Hopkins is survived by his mother, Cynthia Hopkins; a sister, Christina Wood; his grandmother, Ethel Joyce Murphy; and extended family and dearest friends.
There will be a ceremony and potluck to celebrate Hopkins’ life at his mother’s home on Saturday, June 30. All who knew and loved him are welcome. Call Cynthia at 567-6855 for information and directions.

A. Byrl Johnson
Wednesday, 14 May 2008

Albert Byrl Johnson, 96, of Lake Montezuma, died May 27.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Johnson was a Beaver Creek School board member; he built the library, computer lab and several classrooms.
Preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; sister, Mildred Eppers; brothers Max, Gale and Garth Johnson; Johnson is survived by a stepson, Robert Shields; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two nieces.
Memorial Service are at Sedona Winds Assisted Living in Sedona on Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m.
Inurnment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

Douglas E. Levy
April 11, 1949 — Oct. 17, 2007

Douglas Edward Levy, 58, of Sedona, died Oct. 17, at his home.
Levy was born in Wilmington, Del.
Levy was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Levy; and is survived by his father, Richard Levy, of Sedona; a brother, Jeffrey Levy, of North Dakota; and a sister, Janice DuBoise, of Sedona.
Services will be private.

Richard Thomas Howe
Jan. 3, 1938 — Feb. 9, 2010

Richard Thomas Howe, 72, of Sedona, died Feb. 9. He was born Jan. 3, 1938, in Myrtle.
He was a resident of Sedona for 12 years.
Howe was a member of the Christian Science Church and was referred to by his son as “my super hero.”
He is survived by his wife, Frances Howe, of Sedona, son T.J. Howe (Christina) of Tucson; sister Linda Morris of Murrietta, Calif.; and three granddaughters, Heather, Holly and Haylee.

Amy M. Speer
Feb. 5, 1925 — May 16, 2008

Amy Mae Pace Speer, 83, of Sedona, died May 16 at Kachina Point Health Care.
Speer was preceded in death her husband, Richard Speer; three sisters; two brothers; and is survived by two daughters, Sara [Elliott] Douglass, of Greentown, Ind., and Brenda [Jesse] Miles, of Cottonwood; and three grandsons.
A Memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Mundell Christian Church in Heltonville, Ind.

Arnold W. Johnson
June 8, 1912 — July 26, 2008

Arnold W. Johnson, 96, of Sun Lakes, died July 26 in Sedona at his son’s home.
Johnson had served as the Elks Grand Exalted Ruler in Alliance, Neb.; lived in Casper, Wyo.; and upon retiring in 1986, he and his wife, Dolores, moved to Sun Lakes.
Preceded in death by his wife, Dolores; Johnson is survived by his son, Kenneth; a daughter, Sandra Handy; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Services took place in Sun Lakes.

Art Bouthillier
April 20, 2009

Art Bouthillier, 81, died April 20. He was born in Providence, R.I, and grew up in Cambridge, Mass.
He worked at the Boston Globe, Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Examiner and San Mateo Times.
He was a past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge in Sedona and part of the former Elks Marvelous Misfits.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Klatt; daughter, Brenda Papillon; sons, Art, Rick and Frank Bouthillier; and stepson, Valdemar Jone.
Services were held April 25.

Benjamin Samuel Williams

Benjamin S. Williams, beloved husband and devoted father died peacefully Monday morning, February 22, 2010.
Ben was born in Kentucky (1931) to Hamilton Lewis and Lexie Williams, one of four siblings. He attended Dupont Manual High School in Louisville, KY, earning seven varsity letters and playing for state champion teams in both football and baseball, accomplishments that were recognized in 2004 with his being named to the Manual Hall of Fame. He continued his athletic career at Centre College (Danville, KY), earning four letters each in baseball and football, along with a degree in economics.
After college, Ben married Betty Jean Caswell and volunteered for the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He joined Corning Glass Works after his military service, with whom he held a series of progressively responsible positions, culminating in his being named North American Sales Manager (Electronics), a position he held until retirement in 1987. Ben was also a founding Board Member of John G. Ullman and Associates, a successful financial management company.
Ben and Betty moved to Sedona in 1994. Ben served as a docent for the Sedona Historical Society, worked with the local Meals on Wheels program, played golf often, and never failed to appreciate the great natural beauty of the Sedona area. Betty has enjoyed a long association with the Sedona Showstoppers.
Ben is survived by Betty, son Steven, daughter Susan, and granddaughter Kathryn. The Williams Family requests memorials to the Church of the Red Rocks or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Bill Harrison
Dec. 9, 1922 — June 5, 2010

Bill Harrison, 87, of Sedona, died June 5.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean Hughes Harrison.
Harrison is survived by brother Curt Harrison (Jo); son Scott Harrison (Linda); daughter Nancy Jackson; stepchildren Jeff Hughes (Beth), Barb Souris (Mike), Becky Smerchek (Dana), Linda Gering (Craig); 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and Lassie, his miniature schnauzer and best friend.
Memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at Church of the Red Rocks.
Donations: Sedona Historical Society.

Billy J. Harris
Dec. 7, 1946 – Nov. 20, 2007

Billy Joe Harris, 60, resident of Clarkdale, died Nov. 20.
Born in Kansas to Cecil and Adelia Harris, Harris worked for Cedars Resort in Sedona.
Harris is survived by his wife, Deborah Lynn Harris; and his brother, Phil Harris.
No services are planned at this time.

Bob Baier
March 12, 2010

Bob Baier, 77, of Sedona, died March 12.
Baier was a resident of Sedona since 1993 and was the friendly face of Baier Signs. He leaves behind his partner, wife and best friend Donna Baier.
Baier had two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a kind and gentle man and he will be missed.
The family asks that friends carry on in the spirit of Baier, as he was someone who truly loved his neighbors.

Bob McAlester
Saturday, April 14, 2007

Bob McAlester, 63, a resident of Cottonwood and formerly of Sedona, died April 14.
McAlester was preceded in death by both his parents; and is survived by his two daughters, Angela [Tony] Zukowski and Kim [Jim] Foster, of University Place, Wash.; three sisters and one brother located internationally; and four grandsons.
No services will take place.
Inurnment to be held at Tahoma National Cemetery, in Kent, Wash.
