Catherine Roberts Miller
06/19/1960 - 08/29/2004

Catherine Roberts was born at the old Providence Hospital, Anchorage, Alaska, on Father's Day, 1960, to Sue and Don Roberts, and three siblings: Laury, Wendy and Rob.
Catherine at age 3, with her family, survived the Good Friday earthquake in 1964, which measured 9.2 on the Richter Scale, lasting for five minutes. The ensuing tsunami wiped out the towns of Seward, Valdez and Kodiak, drowning 14 people in Crescent City, Calif., and rising 200 feet in Alaska's Latuya Bay. Three years later she was to also survive the Fairbanks Flood in 1967, with the family's home under water for three weeks in a subdivision called Island Homes, which was a misnomer. The four children lost every piece of clothing, all toys and dolls, school papers, pictures, and shoes. The flood area was equal in size to the state of Alabama.
Catherine attended schools in Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kodiak, graduating from Juneau High School in January 1977.
She had become an avid whale watcher under the influence of a great teacher in Juneau, and traveled to Maui in the Hawaiian Islands for this reason. She continued to live on Maui for the rest of her life. She had visited her parents here in Arizona on and off since 1985, finally spending a month's time in Green Valley while caring for her dying father in 1998.
She was referred to as the Nazi Nurse because of her fierce dedication to his caregiving along with her family and with the incredible assistance of Hospice.
While living on Maui she initially married Gerald Stewart and raised two daughters, Angela and Ashley. Sixteen years ago Catherine became a member of AA and was active as a disciple of AA, meeting her second husband, Jim Miller, as she spread "the word." Her best friend for life was Ivan Steiner from AA.
She was a missionary all her life, even as a child, wanting her parents to take in at-risk children. She had grown up with two "adopted" teen-agers, an Aleut-Japanese-American foster sister from the Aleutian Chain, and later a full-blooded Tlingit Indian foster brother from Yakutat. As an adult she was personally, spiritually and financially active in two churches, The Hope Chapel and the Kingdom of God. She worked variously as a 9-1-1 operator and later at the hospital, eventually deciding that she would work on a nursing degree which would serve her well in missionary work in either the Philippines or Wasilla, Alaska, after her son, Aaron Miller, now 10, graduated from high school.
When Catherine was given the diagnosis of being "terminal" in February 2004, she traveled to Stanford Medical Center where the oncologist advised her to "go home and die." In May, Catherine was able to attend the birth of her granddaughter, Rylei Catherine. For the next three months she battled the cancer without success and Hospice was again called upon to help the family with her last journey on this earth.
As she wished, Catherine was cremated in her black sequined dress and the black velvet stiletto-heeled shoes she so loved. A giant mistake was made when this missionary woman died before completing her God's work.
