Rachel Donham
Rachel's life began on May 11, 1918, in Coleman County, Texas. She was the seventh of 10 children born to Joel Louis and Verna Tankersley Sellers, and grew feeling especially blessed to be part of a family endowed with an abundance of love.
As she grew, she developed a strong will, which carried her through life -- not only the good times, but also the tough times. Music was a very important part of her life. She had a natural talent for this and at age 11 began playing the piano for church, where her father was the music director. Much of what she played was because of her keen ear, with the remainder being what she learned at music camps. It was at these camps where, though she never learned to read lines and spaces, she was taught to play shaped notes. Her brothers used to have to pump the pedals of the organ because she was too small to reach them.
Before too long, she learned to play the guitar and from there it was any stringed instrument she picked up. The music in her fingers just seemed to extend to any instrument she picked up.
When she was about 14, she met S.T. Donham, and after a two-year courtship they were married on October 9, 1934, at the home of Brother W.C. Johnson in McCauley, Fisher County, Texas. Their first home was a small house in Rotan, Texas, and they paid a whopping rent of $4 per month. It may not have looked like much, but the love that filled it made it a palace.
One winter morning, they awoke to find that snow had drifted through cracks in the walls, covering the wood cook stove and the table. Never ones to let an opportunity escape, they scraped the snow into a bucket, added a few choice ingredients and enjoyed snow ice cream for breakfast.
In 1936 they, along with other members of both of their families, moved from Texas to the Gila Valley, where they found work on the local farms. On Jan. 31, 1937, they were blessed with their first child, Owen Clifford, born in Central. S.T. continued working on farms throughout the valley and Rachel began cleaning houses. Their second child, Saundra Jean, was born in Glenbar on Dec. 19, 1942. For the next year they lived with Granny and Granddaddy Sellers and Rachel kept house for them in exchange for room and board so they could save to purchase their first home. On Saundra's first birthday, they moved into that house and called Pima home for the remainder of their lives. While living in that home, their third and last child, Kenneth Donald, was born on Sept. 27, 1946. The last move was into their current home on 500 South, still in Pima, and just across the road from the old place in March 1962.
In 1953, while working in a local dining room, Rachel fell and broke her back, but after surgery and some period of healing, bounced back and worked again, showing what a strong and determined lady she was. Over the years, there were three more back surgeries and, each time, she amazed the doctors because she refused to give in to even using a cane, many times when she should have been in a wheelchair. Several years after the last surgery, she did have to give in to a cane and the remark was made more than once, "I see your Mom coming and carrying her cane on her arm." She loved yard sales, and one day Lucy Grauer called and said, "Saundra, your Mom forgot her cane down here at my yard sale."
On Oct. 25, 1994, she was dealt a devastating blow when she lost her husband and companion of 60 years. The next years were very difficult for her, but she kept going. Ken says that they have a saying in their Ward -- "Keep on keeping on." I think they must have learned it from Rachel. Since his passing she had survived a broken hip, the plate that was put in breaking and being replaced with an artificial ball and femur, and several other surgeries. What a tough, courageous lady she was.
She was put on Hospice on June 13, and the remaining weeks of her life were especially hard for her because she had to almost completely depend on someone else for the first time in her life. This was totally foreign to her, being the independent soul she was. It did allow her to be at home and to even be able to still see the first home she and S.T. bought. What a special blessing this was, as it gave her a measure of peace.
Rachel passed away as she lived -- very quietly and, as always, a great lady, special mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
She is survived and will be sorely missed by two sons: Owen of Safford and Ken of Pensacola, Fla.; one daughter, Saundra of Pima; two sisters, Neta Bolinger of Pima and Verna Jo Malone of Mesa; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Those preceding and preparing her way home were her loving S.T., her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Arrangements were entrusted to Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.
