Lomadell Reynolds
Funeral services for Lomadell Reynolds, 83, of Tucson, and formerly of the Gila Valley, were conducted on Nov. 22, 2003 at Bunker's Caldwell Chapel. Concluding services followed in the Sheldon Cemetery.
Lomadell Reynolds was born Feb. 28, 1920, in Globe, the daughter of Jarrett and Ida Elmer. She obtained her formal education in Thatcher. Following her graduation in 1937 from Thatcher High School, Lomadell met Stan Reynolds.
They were later married at her mother's home in Central in 1938.
Together, Lomadell and Stan resided in various places throughout Arizona. She worked at the Phelps Dodge Mercantile in Morenci and later at the Morenci Post Office as a postal clerk. She retired in 1977. While retired, she and Stan relocated to Tucson, to be closer to their daughter, Laree. Lomadell could often be found working with ceramics, making dolls and figurines. She passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 20, in Tucson. Lomadell will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Lomadell is survived by her husband, J. Stanley Reynolds of Tucson; her daughter, Laree Daughenbaugh of Tucson; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Lomadell was preceded in death by her daughter, Ida Jean, in 1947.
The family received friends on Nov. 11 from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.
Arrangements were entrusted to Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.
Vidal Grijalva Gomez
Vidal Grijalva Gomez Jr., 75, of Laveen passed away Nov. 15, 2003, in Phoenix after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lisa Carrasco Gomez; five brothers; five sisters; daughter, Diane Gomez; son, Louie Gomez; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Morenci. He farmed in the Safford area until 1953 when he moved his family to Phoenix. He continued farming, operated a farm aerial crop dusting service, sold trucks and equipment and engaged in other business enterprises.
Services were Nov. 19 at Morris Safford Funeral Home Chapel with interment following at Safford Union Cemetery. A Celebration of Life luncheon was held at the home of Vidal's sister, Olivia DuVall, in Phoenix on Nov. 23. Friends and family attended.
Arrangements were under the direction of Morris Safford Funeral Home.
Pearl Gladys McBride
Pearl Gladys McBride, 75, passed away Nov. 17, 2003, at the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center in Safford. Pearl was born on Nov. 10, 1928, in Gilliam, Ark., to Brazzil and Lillie Overturf.
The Overturf family moved next door to the McBrides in north Clifton.
Pearl became interested in Arthur McBride in December of 1949; they were married on July 1, 1950, and had recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
They lived in the Clifton-Morenci area until Arthur retired from Phelps Dodge in 1984 when they moved to their home south of Safford.
She lived her life for her two children, Kenneth and Barbara. She enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing with her family. She was an avid fisherwoman and would rather fish than eat. She always took Kenneth's and Barbara's friends along because that way she always knew where her kids were and what they were doing.
Pearl also enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting and making various crafts.
She made many beautiful afghans, bedspreads, table scarves, tablecloths and doilies.
She gave most of these to her family as gifts so they would always have something to remember her by.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur McBride of Safford; son, Kenneth of Double Adobe; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ed Overturf of Gilliam, Ark.; numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Pearl was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara McBride Dozier; grandchild, Bonnie McBride Kelley; and siblings, Sherman, Essie, Rosie, Glenn, Tom, Erick, Alex Overturf and Ruth Boyd.
Visitation was Nov. 21 at Morris Safford Funeral Home Chapel. Services were Nov. 22, also at Morris Safford Funeral Home Chapel with pastor Gene Barnett officiating and special music by Goldie Armstrong, Ricky Stapp, and Chuck and Lee Campos. Interment followed at Safford Union Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Morris Safford Funeral Home.
Kent N. Smith
Kent N. Smith, 82, Arizona cattle rancher and politician from Kingman, passed away on Dec. 22, 2003, in Phoenix. Most recently, he lived in Goodyear. He was attended by his physicians and loving family members at his death.
Kent was born in Central on Aug. 26, 1921. His parents were Jim and Winnie Smith and he was the fourth child of eight boys and one girl. Kent grew up in Central, and after attending Pima High School, went on to Eastern Arizona Junior College in Thatcher. His major studies were in the business field and, while there, he met, courted and married La Rue Ballard of Eden in 1940.
He entered the military service and served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan, completing his service as a staff sergeant with the economic and scientific section of General MacArthur's occupation headquarters in Tokyo. After the war, he and his father purchased the Cane Springs Ranch on the Big Sandy River north of Wickieup in the spring of 1946.
He and his family ranched there for the next 40 years, many times serving the cowboys sack lunches filled with tuna fish sandwiches and Planter's Peanut Bars.
Being active in politics, he was elected to the Arizona State House of Representatives from Mohave County for the years 1965 -1966. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions including 19 years as a counselor to Bishop John D. Conneally in Kingman and two years as branch president in Supai, Grand Canyon, traveling from Hilltop, on the South Rim, to the village by horseback.
Kent is survived by his wife of 63 years, La Rue; his brothers Keith, Max, Dale, Lot, and Roger; his sister Fawn (Bryce); as well as his sons Ross, Mike and Gary; daughter Karen; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Many delightful hours were spent swapping jokes with and telling stories to all of his family members, close friends and associates.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, in the Buckeye First Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 1002 E. Eason Ave., Buckeye. Family visitation and viewing will begin at 9 a.m. on the same day.
Graveside services and interment will be held at the Central Cemetery
on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m.
Meta Darleen Reed
Meta Darleen (Morgan) Reed, 55, passed away July 15, 2004, at her residence in Safford.
Darleen Reed was born May 16, 1949, in Morenci to Goldie and W.L. "Red" Morgan. She grew up in Duncan and obtained her education from Duncan schools.
Following her education, Darleen met Robert "Bobby" Johnson. They were married Jan. 16, 1966, in Lordsburg, N.M. Together, Darleen and Robert resided throughout the southwest. In 1989, Darleen married Charles Reed in Elko, Nev. In August of 1992, Charles passed away. Soon thereafter, Darleen returned to the Gila Valley.
Darleen had many interesting jobs during her lifetime. While working in the mines in Nevada, she drove the big Wabco trucks and was a helper, carrying explosives with a "High Packer" crew. She also worked in the casinos.
In addition, she worked all over Nevada and Arizona as a waitress, drove schoolbuses in Sahuarita and Safford, and drove buses hauling Hot Shot firefighters to fires in New Mexico, California and Arizona. She also worked at the Thatcher Post Office and the Safe House.
The last few years she worked in the home health care field. She enjoyed painting, reading, crocheting and playing cards with her family and friends.
Darleen was preceded in death by her parents, W.L. "Red" and Goldie Morgan; her late husband, Charles Reed; her sister, Addie Lucille Burke; and her brother, Sammy Wayne Morgan.
Darleen is survived by her daughter, Ruth Ann Johnson of Safford; three sons, Robert Johnson II of Duncan, Russell L. Johnson and Roy D. Johnson of Safford; her sister, Margaret R. McBride of Safford; three brothers, J.W. "Bud" Morgan of Duncan, Lyle Ray Morgan of Buckeye and Bonner Lee Morgan of Mariposa, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be held in the Sheldon Cemetery
at a later date. Arrangements are by Bunker's Caldwell Chapel, Safford.
Manuel G. Montez
Longtime Solomon resident Manuel G. Montez passed away July 17, 2004, in Tucson. Mr. Montez was 74 years old.
A rosary was recited July 20 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Solomon. The Mass of Christian Burial followed on July 21. Father John Ancharski was the celebrant. Interment was held at San Jose Cemetery.
The Gila Valley Veterans Honor Guard provided military honors. Mr. Montez was a veteran. He served in the United States Air Force and was overseas for two years.
Mr. Montez was born in Solomon.
He worked at the Phelps Dodge Copper Mine as a converter skimmer. Manuel loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, camping and especially fishing. He enjoyed these activities with his family, who will miss him very much.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary. They had four children, Manuel R. Montez Jr. and his wife, Nancy; Cyndi L. Clark and her husband, Bob; Sandra M. Torrez and her husband, Frank; and David R. Montez and his wife, Terrie.
Manuel's passing preceded his brothers and sisters. They are Angel G. Montez and his wife, Dolores; Beatrice M. Munoz; Jessie Aguilar and her husband, Mike; Carmela Ortega and her husband, Dario; and David G. Montez.
Manuel was blessed in life to have seven grandchildren who loved him and will miss him deeply.
They are Manuel Angel Montez III and his wife, Jennifer; Heather Marie Montez; Chastity Marie Laferty and her husband, Patrick; Margaret Ann Berume and her husband, Jerimiah; David Nell Montez Jr. and his wife, Jeannette; Joseph Montez and Jesse Montez.
Manuel also had 10 great-grandchildren. They are as follows: Cheyenne and Maria Laferty, Brianna Jordan, Angelina and Vanity Berume, Jason Montez, David James Montez III, James, Kyle and Logan Livingston.
The family of Manuel Montez would like to thank all of you who showed support and acts of kindness during these difficult days.

Lola Norton
Funeral services for Lola Norton, 98, of Central, were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Central LDS Chapel.
Lola was born Aug. 17, 1906, in Eden, Arizona Territory, to James Abner Martin and Adah Alzina Harper.
Lola attended school in Central, graduating from the eighth grade in 1920. She attended the Gila Academy in Thatcher until her junior year. She married Cecil E. "Tom" Norton on July 30, 1926, in Globe. Tom and Lola bought their farm and raised six children on 36 acres.
Lola worked at JC Penney's for 23 years, retiring in 1971. She was the alteration lady and worked full time in women's apparel.
Lola had many talents and was a hard worker. She was a seamstress, an excellent cook and candy maker. She crocheted, made quilts, embroidered and taught her talents to anyone willing to learn.
Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Norton. She is survived by three sons, Keyte (Kay) of Chattaroy, Wash., Brooks (Golda) of St. George, Utah, and Tom of Corrales, N.M.; two daughters, Neva Rae (Gary) of Thatcher, Mary Lou (Guy) of St. David; one sister, Mona Rogers of Mesa; 25 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends gathered Wednesday morning at the Central Ward LDS Church.
