Anita Joy Reidhead Barr
Anita Joy Reidhead was born June 24, 1936, in Durango, Colo., to Earnest Bruce Reidhead and Martha Luceal Davis. Anita went to be with the Lord on Nov. 15, 2008.
Anita Joy graduated from Snowflake High School in 1955. She married Jim Goucher on June 8, 1956; they made their home in Show Low. They had three children, Vickie, Rickey and Christy. They divorced, and Anita Joy eventually married Scott Barr in 1967. Anita and Scott relocated to Thatcher in the summer of 1974. She divorced him in 1977.
Anita Joy was a homemaker and landlord of several rentals. She enjoyed family get-togethers, reunions, horse races, playing cards, watching the Suns games and dancing. But most of all, she enjoyed her children, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, James Reidhead; and son Rickey Goucher.
Anita is survived by her two daughters, Vickie (Terry) Barr of Tucson and Christy (Jimmy) Maltos of Thatcher; three brothers, Odell (Juanita) Reidhead, Leroy (Patricia) Reidhead, both of Show Low, and George Reidhead of Springerville; one sister, Sandra Noble, also of Show Low; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 21, at the LDS Church at 1 p.m. Anita is interred at the Thatcher City Cemetery.
Mary Bertice Baskin
Mary Bertice Baskin, 91, of Clifton passed away Nov. 16, 2008. Mary lived in California for more than 50 years prior to moving to Arizona. She retired from Tri-Valley Growers in California.
Mary was born Feb. 28, 1917, in Nimrod, Ark., to Joseph Robert Carothers and Maggie May Harmon. She married James O. Baskin on June 30, 1932, at Slaty Crossing, Ark. They were married until his death in 1979.
She was an active member of the Church of Christ. She is known for her famous teddy bears and the blankets she loved to crochet and give away.
It is impossible to express the love and admiration we all have for Mary, our mother, our granny, our sister in Christ and our friend.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary Ellen (Dale) Busby of Las Vegas, Linda (Larry) Peters of Clifton; grandchildren Debbie Downey, Nancy Barrington, Karen (Joe) Silveira, Roxanne Holguin, Lois Price, Christy (Greg) Cox, Kevin (Patty) Baskin, Patty (Mark) Soares of California, Sandra (Richard) Umbarger of Missouri, Rodney Cornett of Las Vegas, Lindsay (Levi) Cook of Sahuarita, Lucas (Kim) Peters of Safford; great-grandchildren Shauna, Ryan, Anthony, Joey, Tina, Erin, Caesar, Stephanie, Sarah, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Amanda, Zack, Kaleen, John, Briana, Nicholas, Matthew, Melissa, Riley and Landon; great-great-grandchildren Joshua, Hannah, Daisy, Trevin, Devin, Kathy, Brandon, Cameron, Oscar, Dustin, Kaitlyn, Bobby Jr., Keira and Isaac; and two daughters-in-law, Pat Baskin and Beverly Baskin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Baskin; daughters Sue Evon Baskin and Betty Jo Barrington; sons Herman L. Baskin and James I. Baskin; two grandsons, Stacy Baskin and Bobby Cornett; great-grandson Brent Grey; and great-great-granddaughter Brianna Silveira.
A memorial service was Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. at Morris Safford Funeral Home. Mary’s final resting place will be next to her husband in California.
Olas Carter
Olas Taylor Carter, 82, passed away Nov. 22, 2008, at the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 18, 1926, in Pima to Wallace Allen Taylor and Eva Irene Cluff Taylor. She was the seventh of eight children and the only daughter.
She lived in Pima until the middle of her sophomore year in high school, when her family moved to Florence, where her father had a job at the Arizona State Prison.
She met the love of her life, Horace Carter, in December 1945, and they were married Feb. 23, 1946, in Florence. They lived in Pima, Glenbar, Coolidge and Bonita during the early years of their marriage and finally made their permanent home in Pima.
Their first daughter, Harriet Ann, was born May 1947 in Glenbar, and Pamela came along in January 1949 while they were living in Coolidge. In May 1955, they took their family to be sealed in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.
Olas was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings in most of the organizations of the church, including both ward and stake positions.
She was a wonderful seamstress and made many beautiful clothes for her daughters, including all of their formals and their wedding dresses. She also sewed for all her grandchildren and made many doll clothes for her daughters and granddaughters.
She loved traveling and went on many wonderful trips as often as she could with friends and with her brothers, Max and Donald, and their wives.
She is survived by her husband, Horace C. Carter; her daughters, Harriet Ann (Byron) Felix and Pamela (Ross) Carpenter; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one more due in April. She is also survived by two brothers, Shirley (Butch) Taylor of Florence and Donald Taylor of Pima; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted in the Pima LDS Chapel on Nov. 29. Interment followed in the Pima Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Hiram Youngblood
Hiram Wesley Youngblood Jr. got off this ride Nov. 26, 2008, at his home in Fort Thomas. Hiram was born April 3, 1963, to Hiram Wesley Youngblood Sr. and Linda Lillian Darnell in Houston, Texas.
Hiram came to Arizona as a teenager in the mid-1970’s. When Hiram left home, he moved to Hollywood, Calif., where he worked in the movie industry as a boom man. Hiram later worked in security and did a detail for NASA in Lompoc, Calif.
Hiram was an avid animal lover and volunteered at his local animal shelter for many years. He also volunteered at a nursing home and drove for Meals on Wheels. Hiram was politically active and always spoke out for human and animal rights. He had a great sense of humor and an optimistic attitude throughout his life.
Hiram moved to Fort Thomas in 2004 to be closer to his family. He was attending Eastern Arizona College as an honor student on a full scholarship, majoring in art, when he was diagnosed with liver cancer in March 2007.
Hiram was preceded in death by his longtime canine companion, Presley. He is survived by his beloved adopted father, Ruben Hernandez; mother, Linda Darnell; adopted daughter Darrah Price; three sisters, Linda Price, Lily Youngblood and Danica Jonas; as well as seven nephews and five nieces.
Hiram was larger than life and will be terribly missed by those who knew and loved him. A memorial service was held for him in his home Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the local animal shelter.
Ralph Johnson
Services for Ralph Johnson, 85, of Virden, N.M., were held Nov. 13, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Duncan. He passed away Nov. 9 at Sun Haven Care Center in Lordsburg, N.M.
Ralph was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Johnsonville, N.M., to George and Almar Johnson. He attended the one-room school of Neblett until eighth grade and then went on to high school in Duncan. He married Fayrene Goodner in February 1943.
Ralph was a hard worker all of his life, with farming, building around 50 new homes, plus remodels. Later, in the 1980s, he discovered water dowsing that he enjoyed very much.
Survivors include his three daughters, Judy Clifton of Belmont, Miss., Janice Webb of Virden and JaNeil Anderson of Red Rock, N.M.; a son, Greg Johnson of Virden; one brother, Gene Johnson of Mule Creek, N.M.; four grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
Lydia Murillo
Lydia Murillo, 74, of Morenci passed away Dec. 8, 2008, in Tucson. She was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Metcalf to Eulogio and Carmen Aragon.
Lydia attended school in Morenci and worked as head cook at the Copper Kettle Cafe in Morenci. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and watching novelas. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
Lydia was preceded in death by her parents and by sons Ray and Henry. She is survived by her children, Jennie (Sam) Aragon of Morenci, Mary Ann Shute of Tucson and Daniel Aragon of Tucson; siblings Ophelia (Robert) Martinez of Tolleson, Anita (Mark) Mendoza of Deming, N.M., Gloria Rodgers of Phoenix, Irene (Luis) Lopez of Peoria, Lupe (Alby) Rodela of Solomon, Sam Aragon of Morenci and Tony Castaneda of Phoenix; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial and rosary were conducted Thursday, Dec. 11, 11 a.m., at the Caldwell Funeral Chapel. Arrangements were entrusted to Caldwell Chapel.
William Layton
William Athol (Bill) Layton, 84, died Dec. 9, 2008, at his home in Thatcher. Bill was a direct descendant of a well-known Gila Valley pioneer, being the great-grandson of Thatcher town founder Christopher Layton.
Bill was born Feb. 13, 1924, in San Diego to Christopher Athol and Laura Foote Layton. The family moved to Safford, where his parents lived the remainder of their lives. Bill graduated from Safford High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served on a ship in the Normandy Invasion in WWII.
In 1945, Bill married Velma Hockenberry of Mason City, Iowa. The couple lived in Mason City for many years, then Clinton and Dubuque, Iowa. Bill and Velma had four children – Jim, deceased in 1967, Nancy (Idyllwild, Calif.), David (Clinton) and Charles (Greenfield, Iowa).
Bill worked for Interstate Power Company in Iowa from 1948 until his retirement in 1986. After Velma’s death in 1986, Bill returned to the Gila Valley and lived in Safford. Bill married Gladiolia Vivian Dickson in 1988, and the couple lived first in Safford, then Apple Valley, Calif., then moved back to Thatcher in 2001.
Bill Layton was a lifelong Freemason, a member of the Safford American Legion Post 32 and an active member of the Safford Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; his son, Jim; and his wife, Velma.
Bill is survived by his wife, Vivian; his children, Nancy, David and Charles; two brothers, Charlie and Roy; three sisters, Dorothy, Carol Ann and Joyce; four grandchildren, Laura, Sara, Micah and Will; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service with luncheon to follow is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. at the Safford Church of Christ, 3888 S. Hwy. 191. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends who wish to honor Bill Layton’s life make a contribution to the Safford Church of Christ. Henry Kim West
Henry Kim West, 55, passed away Dec. 18, 2008, at his home in Thatcher after a courageous battle with leukemia. Born in May of 1952, he was the son of Henry and Velma Almira Howard West. He had three older brothers, Lavar West, Laval West and Melburn West.
Kim graduated from Thatcher High School in 1970 and graduated from Eastern Arizona College in 1974. In 1978, he married Rebecca Ann Rowley in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They had four children, Jonathon (deceased), H. David West, Charlotte Ann West Whetten and Nathan J. West.
From the early age of 14, Kim was employed at various businesses around the Gila Valley. He was a farmhand, auto mechanic, construction worker, truck driver, photographer, auto parts man, salesman and finally a Parts Master parts man employed for 32 years at the local John Deere dealership, Central Implements, at the time of his death.
Kim was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church positions, including teacher, fulltime missionary in the Hawaiian Mission, stake missionary, genealogy consultant, Cubmaster, ward clerk, high priest group leader and financial clerk.
He was a dedicated father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He loved his family and friends, both near and far, and always loved to serve them. He was a man who just loved being home and spending time with his family and friends. He was interested in auto mechanics, gardening and landscaping, had many pets, outdoor activities, handyman projects and enjoyed his church duties as well.
Kim is survived by his wife, Rebecca A. (Beckie) West; son H. David West; daughter Charlotte Ann Whetten (Randel); and son Nathan James West.
Preceding Kim in death is his father, Henry West; his mother, Velma West; son Jonathon; and brothers Laval West and Melburn West.
A viewing for Kim West will be Monday, Dec. 22, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Caldwell Funeral Chapel and again before services Tuesday, Dec. 23, noon to 12:45 p.m. Services are at 1 p.m. at the Thatcher Stake Center on Reay Lane, Thatcher. Interment at the Graham Cemetery
will follow the services. Arrangements are under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
