Daniel Runyon
Daniel M. Runyon was born June 28, 1946, in Morenci and went to be with his Lord Dec. 17, 2008, after a lengthy illness.
After graduating from Morenci High School in 1963, he continued his education at Durham Business College in Phoenix. Upon graduation, he returned to Morenci and worked in Clifton.
Danny was called to serve his country Nov. 16, 1967, with the U.S. Eighth Army. His duty was in Korea. He was honorably discharged Jan. 10, 1969, and returned home. After his twin brother's death, he incurred medical problems that caused him to be homebound.
Danny was a loving, caring person who strived to help others less fortunate. He will always be in our hearts and minds, and he will be missed. He enjoyed reading books, listening to classical music and collecting Chinese/Japanese art and vases. He was also an excellent cook. Danny was a lifelong member of the VFW in Thatcher.
He is survived by his mother, Rosa Martinez; aunts Beatrice Bonilla, Soledad Myers, Lupe Mojarro and Carmen Buffo; and numerous cousins and nieces.
A gathering of friends and family will be held Sunday, Dec. 21, 6 p.m., at Caldwell Funeral Chapel, and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, Dec. 22, 11 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in his name and honor.
John Michael Scott
John Michael Scott, 37, of Safford passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008.
He was born Feb. 13, 1971, in Socorro, N.M., to E. Walter Scott Jr. and Patricia Long.
John served in the Army National Guard and later worked as a conductor for the Burlington Northern/-Santa Fe Railroad.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
John was preceded in death by his father, E. Walter Scott Jr., and his daughter, Marshall, and is survived by his mother, Patricia Scott; his wife, Frances Scott; his children, Brandon and Alexandria; his brother, Brandon (Ashley) Scott and their children, Harleigh and Mason; and his uncle, Jerry (Sharon) Scott and their children, Kim and Sara.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at McDougal's Caldwell Funeral Chapel, 112 E. Main St., Safford.
Interment will be in the Safford Cemetery.
Reina Soto
Reina Soto passed away Nov. 3, 2008. Reina was born Oct. 1, 1938, in Copper Creek to Clemente M. Soto and Frances P. Soto. She married Joe N. Delgado on Jan. 18, 1960.
She is survived by her two children, Joe M. Delgado (Nora) and Dian R. Delgado of Safford. She was blessed with 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her sister, Gloria Lucio (David) of Bisbee; John (Nancy) and Robert Lucio, nephews; and her brother, Tony Soto of Safford.
She was preceded in death by her mom, Frances, who passed away June 9, 2008; and her father, Clemente, who passed away Feb. 12, 1957; also her husband, Joe, who passed away Jan. 5, 2000.
Wallace Damron
Wallace Woodrow Damron, 84, of Globe passed away Dec. 11 in Globe. Wallace was born March 1, 1924, in Thatcher to Elzy and Emma Naylor Damron. Throughout his life, he worked on local farms and ranches. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his sisters, Florence Mabel Hill of Lakeside, Calif., and Ema Matilda Chesley of Globe. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Dec. 18, 1 p.m., at Caldwell Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Thatcher Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Rachel Sierra
Rachel Sierra, 34, died unexpectedly. She is survived by her mother, Janine Tyler; father and stepmother, Anthony and Terry Torrisi; brother Jonathan Torrisi; stepsisters Genevive (Richard) Falcon and Bridgette (Buddy) Linford; niece and nephew, Arrianna and Pierce Torrisi; nephews Aiden, Jacob and Rodrick Falcon and Cameron Orona; grandmother Janice Tyler; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Marilyn Austin; grandfather Salvatori Torrisi; and grandfather John Tyler.
She was beloved by all and will be remembered for her sunny disposition, her radiant smile, her laughing face, her love for music and crocheting, and making crafts.
From the time Rachel was a baby, she smiled from ear to ear. She always had a smile on her face. She was such a happy baby and happy child. Her mother called her Rae-Rae, her "rae" of sunshine.
She enjoyed taking pictures and corresponding with ones she wanted to stay close with. Our daughter, granddaughter and sister was endearing to all of our memories. May we recognize without a doubt that she is sleeping peacefully, and we shall welcome her back.
Memorial services were held 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Baca's Funeral Chapels, 3805 Delk Drive, Silver City, N.M.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels.
Robert Leslie Bell
Robert Leslie Bell, born Dec. 29, 1928, passed away Dec. 29, 2008.
Robert played football at the University of Arizona on a football scholarship. He was a former Marine with the Underwater Demolition Team Services and served in the Korean War. He was a football coach and an educator for 40 years. In addition, he was an administrator for Drug and Alcohol Education Prevention, deputy associate superintendent of the Department of Education for southwestern Arizona, a rancher and cowboy for the last 24 years, and a Pro Rodeo cowboy.
Surviving Robert are his wife of 53 years, Jorene Bell of Willcox; sons Wendell and Robert Bell; daughters Cyndee Lou Smith and Karen Elaine Wynne; 11 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; siblings Joan Virginia Roberts and Edward Laverne Bell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cindy Kay Curtis
Cindy Kay Curtis, 37, of Thatcher died Dec. 16, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson after complications following back surgery.
She was born Aug. 14, 1971, to James “Jim” and Ruth Wilson of Benson. She graduated from Benson High School in 1989 and obtained an associate degree from Eastern Arizona College in 2008.
Cindy moved to the Gila Valley in 1991 and has been a resident ever since. She married Michael Curtis of Thatcher in 1993, and they have four children, Makaila, JD, Alayna and Chandler.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; her children, Makaila, JD, Alayna and Chandler, all of Thatcher; parents James “Jim” and Ruth Wilson of Benson; sister Christina (Shawn) Holcomb of Houston; and brother Raymond (Lori) Wilson of Maricopa.
Services were held Dec. 20 at the Thatcher Stake Center and were conducted by Bishop Steve Daley. Serving as casket bearers were Raymond Wilson, David Wilson, Tim Dillon, Patrick Cahill, James Bryce and Jim Lutz.
Concluding services were at the Central Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Janice Given
Janice Marie Given, 57, passed away Dec. 24, 2008, at University Medical Center in Tucson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Thatcher High School, with burial to follow in Springerville.
Janice was born Oct. 25, 1951, in Springerville.
She was an educator with more than 30 years of experience ranging from classroom teaching to administration.
She was appointed superintendent of Thatcher Schools in 2000. She held a bachelor's degree, two master's degrees and a doctorate degree in the field of education.
Janice was highly regarded in the education community and deeply cherished by her family and friends.
Janice was preceded in death by her daughter, Melissa, in 2007.
She is survived by her husband, John Given; daughter and son-in-law Casandra and Nick Albert; granddaughter Madeleine; mother Caroline Trammell; sister and brother-in-law Ginger and Gayle Brown; sister and brother-in-law Gracie and Lanny Sherrill; and many other loving family and friends.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
Jesus Caraveo
Jesus Adan Caraveo passed away Dec. 25, 2008, in Safford. Jesus was born Jan. 4, 1978, to Evangelina and Gilberto Caraveo in Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Jesus liked going to the gym to work out and also watching as well as playing football.
Jesus earned his bookkeeping certificate from Eastern Arizona College.
He also took a child psychology course online and received his certificate with highest honors.
Jesus was always looking for ways to better himself and make a better life for his children and himself.
He loved spending time with his children, his family and his friends.
Jesus was full of life and always made others laugh.
He was a wonderful son and brother, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
Jesus is survived by his father, Gilberto (Beto); his mother, Evangelina; his brothers, Moises, Neftali and Gilberto Caraveo Jr.; his sisters, Susana Carrasco, Marisela Caraveo and Sandra Austin; and his children, Jesus Caraveo Jr. and Antonio Guillermo Caraveo.
Funeral services for Jesus Caraveo were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Mount Graham LDS Chapel. A viewing was held Monday, Dec. 29, at the Caldwell Funeral Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Interment was in the Safford Cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to McDougal's Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
