Elvera Sedgeman
Elvera Bacho Sedgeman of Thatcher passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, on Jan. 12, 2009, at the age of 81, after battling cancer for the last four years.
She was born in Barnesboro, Pa., on Aug. 13, 1927, to Paul and Mary Vargo Bacho. She was next to the youngest of nine siblings.
After attending grammar school and graduating from Barnesboro High School, Elvera went to work as a secretary for the FBI in Washington, D.C., from June 15, 1946, to January 1951. It was in March of 1950 that she met the love of her life, Joseph Sedgeman Jr. They were married Jan. 27, 1951.
Since Joe was in the Navy at that time, they made their life traveling the world with their children, Joseph Paul, who was born in Japan, and Brian Michael, who was born in Guam. Joe retired from the Navy after 30 years of service, and in 1968, they moved to Bisbee for a couple of years. From 1971 to 1982, they lived in Morenci, where Joe became a security guard for Phelps Dodge.
Elvera enjoyed bowling, crocheting, gardening, and she loved her Pittsburgh teams. In their spare time, she and Joe would travel to Las Vegas for a little fun, where she loved her deuces wild. From 1982 to 1992, they lived in Sierra Vista, and then in 1992, they decided to move to Las Vegas and enjoy their retirement. They lived there for 13 years and loved having their family visit on vacations; they would show them the best entertainment Vegas had to offer, from walking the Vegas Strip to relaxing at the pool.
In 2004, Elvera was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and in 2005, after she was in remission, she and Joe decided to move to Thatcher to be close to their family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend who loved her family and her faith. Those who met her knew they had a friend for life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Elvera is survived by her husband, Joseph Sedgeman Jr.; her two sons and their families, Joseph Paul Sedgeman (Lori) of Thatcher and Brian Michael Sedgeman (Leticia) of Morenci. Elvera has four grandchildren, Lisa (Lance) Shurtz, Michael Sedgeman, Amy Sedgeman, Anthony (A.J.) Sedgeman; eight great-grandchildren, Garret, Tyler, Landen and Lathen Shurtz, Anthony, Elijah and Briseis (children of Amy Sedgeman); and Brenden Sedgeman (son of A.J. Sedgeman). She is also survived by her sister, Barbara (Bertha) Laczko of Sierra Vista, and her brother, Joseph Bacho of Colorado, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Elvera was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Mary, four sisters and three brothers.
The family requests contributions to Mount Graham Hospice, 1600 S. 20th Ave., Building E, Safford, AZ 85546.
Rosary services were Jan. 15, 7 p.m., at the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.

Thomas Hively
Thomas Roy Hively, 63, of Safford passed away Jan. 18, 2009, at Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 4, 1946, in Ada, Okla., to R.T. and Noeta Hively.
Tom served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged after 13 years of service.
He later retired from the post office.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Hively, and mother Noeta Hively.
He is survived by his father, R.T. Hively; brother John (Methune) Hively; three grandsons, Sean, Tyler and Anthony; mother-in-law Vivian M. Berg; and brother-in-law Budd (Kaye) Looney.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2 p.m., at the Church at Safford.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in Pam and Tom Hively's name.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.

Maurice Cooper
Maurice "Mo" Cooper was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Port Allegany, Pa. With his family at his side, he went to sleep in death Jan. 15, 2009, in Safford.
He became one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1958 and symbolized his dedication by baptism on May 17, 1958.
Maurice met his wife, Patricia Woerndel at a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1959, and the two were married Feb. 15, 1960.
Maurice was an artistic person with a unique sense of humor. He was a gifted musician and a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Mo was able to share his talent with others by playing trumpet in a variety of dance bands in New York City. At times, he played backup in bands for well-known musicians, including Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey. Later, he was able to share his love of music by teaching band, directing, arranging music and playing in the symphony in Tucson. He also had the privilege of conducting orchestras for assemblies and conventions of Jehovah's Witnesses.
After raising their son, Gregg, in Oklahoma, Mo and his wife, Pat, moved to Safford in 1981. Mo worked as a sign painter, painting many signs and billboards in the community. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he shared his faith with others, served as an elder in the congregation and was instrumental in the construction of the local Kingdom Hall.
Maurice was a man of strong faith and firmly believed in the scriptural teaching of a resurrection of the dead. He is survived by his wife, Pat, and son Gregg.
A memorial service was held at the Safford Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m.

Timothy Russell Wood, 28, was born in Phoenix on March 15, 1980. He moved to Safford with his family in 1993. Timothy attended Mount Graham High School and worked at El Charro Restaurant through high school.
He joined the Navy in November 1999 and completed basic training February 2000 at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois with the goal of naval aviation. Graduating with honors, he was accepted into the flight mechanic program in Pensacola, Fla., after which he was stationed in Pax River, Md.
He attended flight engineering school in Jacksonville, Fla., again graduating at the top of his class. He qualified for top security clearance that allowed him to deploy overseas and engineer the P3 reconnaissance aircraft. Moving to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Wash., he was deployed numerous times, including deployments to Iraq. His fellow sailors chose him to be Sailor of the Year.
In 2006, Timothy applied and was hand-picked to be an instructor in naval engineering. He moved his family to Jacksonville to accept that honor. He was an intricate part of a team that helped to keep our country safe. To quote his commanding officer, "Numerous people have returned home alive and safe as a result of the training they received from Timothy."
Timothy proudly served his country. He loved his career and his family and lived his life with honor, courage and commitment.
Tim is survived by his wife, Shannon, and two children, Brooklyn and Kaden of Jacksonville; his parents, Daniel and Loretta Wood; sisters Angela Wood and Sarah Kouts (Kevin); nieces Leilani Alva, Mianna Alva and Dallis Kouts and nephews Braden Kouts and Caleb Kouts of Safford; grandparents Daniel and Diane Wood of Dragoon, Regina Evans of Safford and Jean Hanober of Pennsylvania; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at the Thatcher Stake Center.

Floyd Johnson
Floyd Wilson “Topper” Johnson, 80, of Duncan passed away Jan. 13, 2009, in Safford. Topper was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Duncan to William Wilson and Ethel Branyon Johnson. He served in the military during the Korean Conflict and worked for the Duncan Unified School District for 41 years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary; sons Paul, Steven and Mark, along with their families; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by sister Verna Boruk, brother Douglas Johnson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elaine and brother Robert.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Duncan United Methodist Church.
Interment was in the Duncan Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.

June Attaway
June Rose Valand Attaway, 78, of Duncan passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, N.M.
She was born Jan. 28, 1930, in Escanaba, Mich., to Norbit Valand and Helen Knight.
June attended schools in Michigan and graduated from high school. She joined the U.S. Air Force, where she did secretarial work, during the Korean Conflict. She moved to Santa Monica, Calif., and married Willis David Attaway.
They moved to Duncan in 1980. She loved to paint and garden, and she had a beautiful singing voice.
She is survived by her husband, Willis of Duncan; one daughter, Val (Rolando) Trevino of Illinois; a sister, Carol Berk of Michigan; a brother, Knight Valand of West Bend, Mich.; and her grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 16, at the Duncan Methodist Church. Interment was in the Duncan Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of McDougal-Caldwell Funeral Chapel.

Barlow Taft Anderson
Barlow Taft Anderson, 40, of Safford passed away Dec. 26 at the University Medical Center of Tucson. He was born Aug. 17, 1968, to Marlow and Molly Anderson in Delta, Utah. Barlow was raised and educated in Oak City, Utah. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Barlow was preceded in death by his father, Marlow Anderson. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patricia Anderson; sons Anthony, Andrew and Alex; mother Molly Anderson; brothers Don and Lester; many in-laws, nieces, nephews; and many close friends.
Visitation was at the Caldwell Funeral Chapel from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 4 and one hour prior to funeral services at the church. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 5, 1 p.m., in the 20th Street LDS Chapel.
Barlow was laid to rest in the Safford Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.

James Felsinger Jr.
James Arnold Felsinger Jr., 57, of Solomon died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Mount Graham Regional Hospital from a long-term illness. He was born in Safford on Oct. 20, 1951. He is the son of the late James A. Felsinger Sr. and the late Mary L. Donaghue.
James was a veteran. He worked at Phelps Dodge for many years until he became disabled.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Darlene (Dudek) Felsinger, whom he married July 22, 1977; one son, Brody J. Felsinger of Flagstaff; four daughters, Amy L. (Oscar) Reyes of Queen Creek, Tessa H. (Sam) Crist of Chandler, Shyla D. Felsinger of Solomon and Shanda M. Felsinger of Solomon; six grandchildren, Natalie Felsinger, Jesse A. Marquez, Pablo A. Marquez, Enrique J. Martinez, J. Andres Martinez, Zarina J. Felsinger; and one great-grandchild, Mia S. Felsinger.
He is also survived by his dad, Patrick Donaghue of Virden, N.M., and his only brother, Donald Felsinger of San Diego.
We all will miss him dearly.
