Geraldine Cleveland

1907-2000

Geraldine Cleveland, of Benson, died on May 19, 2000, at the age of 93.

She is survived by daughter-in-law, Rosemary and foster daughter, Mary Ann; grandchildren, Lynn, Janet, Stuart, Tracey, Keary and Kelly and their families.

There were no services held. Graveside visitation will be at a later date.

Kathleen L. "Kat" Lee

Kathleen L. Lee a 31 year resident of St. David, died on Sept. 20, 2000, at the age of 73. She was born in Dynuba, Ca. on Oct. 7, 1926, to Horace and Vivian Burnette.

Kathleen is preceded in death by her husband Obie Lee in 1990. She is survived by one sister Verda Wright, Benson, six sons; Floyd (Brenda) Lee, Benson, Homer (Gay) Lee, Marysville, Ca., Danny (Betty) Lee, Flagstaff, Robert (Dona) Lee, Randy (Cassie)Lee, both of St. David, Kit (Stephanie) Lee, Morerci, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 23, 2000, at Richardson's Mortuary, Benson. Visitation Sept. 22, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Richardson's Mortuary Chapel. Officiant of the service will be Reverend George Whitehead. Casket bearers will be Kat's grandsons, Josh Lee, Skylar Lee, Jake Lee, Pat Lee, Ben Lee, and Dale Lee.

Alex B. Lopez

1925-2000

Alex B. Lopez, of St. David, died June 11, 2000, at age 74. Alex was born on Oct. 31, 1925 in Bisbee.

Lopez served in U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of St. David; son, John Lopez of St. David; three daughters, Mary (Joe) Torre of Sierra Vista; Guadalupe Stearns of Scottsdale and Maria (Don) Curtis of Tucson; two brothers, Tony Lopez of Los Angeles, Calif. and Rey Lopez of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Eva Lopez of Los Angeles, Calif. and four grandchildren.

Services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, of Benson, on June 17, 2000. Visitation was at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel on June 16. Casketbearers were Don Curtis, Tommy Anderson, Dan Tibbits, Danny Blakey, Tyler Curtis and Dan Curtis. Honorary bearers wer John Lopez, Tim Meracle, Clyde Anderson, Antonio Lopez and Reynaldo Lopez.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Luther Monroe

1909-2000

Luther Monroe, of Benson, died on July 2, 2000, at the age of 91. He was born on June 13, 1909 in King, Ark.

Mr. Monroe had completed the eight grade and was a welder for the railroad. He had lived in Arizona for 57 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lettie Monroe in 1977; son, Bryan Waller in 1964; granddaughter, Linda Higel in 1996 and a son-in-law, Horace Vernon in 1997.

Mr. Monroe is survived by, one daughter, Frances Vernon, of Benson; five grandchildren, Judy (Michael) Lamb, Donald (Vanieta) Waller, of Long Beach, Calif.; Donna (Jim) Shannon of Nevada; Thelma (Larry) Williams of Sierra Vista and Nelson Waller; many nieces and nephews, 11 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Benson Heights Baptist Church on July 7, 2000, visitation was held on July 6, 2000. Rev. David Morris officiated the service. Interment was at the Cochise Garden of Rest. Casket bearers were Larry Williams, Johnny Eckles, Jerry Eckles, Kirk Bishop, Lane Hegel and Rockne Hegel.

Services under the direction of Richardson's Mortuary in Benson.

Christel (Chris) Carter

1918-2000

Christel Carter, of Benson, died on July 6, 2000, at the age of 81. Christel was born in Leipzip, Germany, on July 10, 1918.

Mrs. Carter was a housewife, member of the Catholic Church and was a member of the Lady Eagles Fraternal Order #3593.

Christel is survived by her ex-husband, Jack Carter, Mayfield, Ky., and many special friends.

The services will be held on July 21, 2000, at 6 p.m. Cecil Richardson will be officiating the service.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary.

Richard Clarence "Dick" Darnell

1929-2000

Richard Clarence "Dick" Darnell, of St. David, died on July 19, 2000, while visiting family in Paradise, Texas, Dick was born on Feb. 3, 1929, in Tucson, to Clarence A. and Katherine R. Darnell.

Richard was a lifetime resident of Arizona. He served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring as Master Sergeant. He was a member of the VFW and DAV and the American Legion. He was also a mechanic by profession in which he worked in Texas and in Arizona. Richard was a member of the King Solomon Lodge #5 F&AM, Tucson Scottish Rite Bodies and Sabbar Shrine Temples. Richard was also a strong supporter of the Shrine Hospitals for Crippled Children.

Richard is survived by his mother, Katherine R. Darnell of St. David; two daughters, Lorena A. Darnell of Park City, Utah and Laurie L. (Charles) Anderson of Paradise, Texas; two sons, Richard E. Darnell of Sandy, Utah and Donald D. Darnell of Paradise, Texas; sister, Frances (Bert) Goodman of St. David; brothers, Robert E. (Gladys) Darnell of Silver City, N.M.; Norman A. Darnell of Peoria and Jack (Mary) Breen of Tucson; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Visitation and services were held on July 22, 2000, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. David. Services were officiated by the Masonic Order. The Military Color Guard also honored him at the services. Interment was at St. David Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Willia Mae "Billie" Monroe

1913-2000

Willia Mae "Billie" Monroe died on July 21, 2000, at Tucson Medical Center, at the age of 87. Willia was born on June 8, 1913, to William and Dixie Lee McNeilly Starks, in Chesapeake, Ohio.

She moved to the Benson and Tombstone area 32 years ago from Florida and has been a local resident since. Willia worked at several jobs as a cashier and clerk. She enjoyed cooking and traveling. On June 15, 1975, Willia married her second husband, Douglas Monroe, at a Tombstone Vigilante Ceremony held on Allen St. in Tombstone.

Willia was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Harrison in 1986; her second husband, Douglas Monroe in 1999 and her brother, Charles "Red" Starks.

She is survived by her children, Fran Dawson of Tombstone; Anne G. (Dick) Baumlein of St. David; Donna Clancy of Tombstone and Patty (Paul) Bowers of Pleasant Gardens, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; also several step-children.

Visitation was held on July 24, 2000, at the Dugan Funeral Chapel in Bisbee. Graveside services were held on July 25, 2000, at the Tombstone Cemetery in Tombstone.

All arrangements were handled by Dugan Funeral Chapel of Bisbee.

Philo O. "Nick" Nichols

Philo 0. "Nick" Nichols, of Willcox, died on July 30, 2000, at his ranch, at the age of 73. Funeral services will be held on Aug. 4, 2000, at Westlawn Chapel, in Willcox, beginning at 10 a.m., with viewing beginning at 8 a.m. Burial will take place at the Kansas Settlement Cemetery. Contributions may be made to American Cancer Research.

Services under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.

Jack C. Kempf

1918-2000

Jack C. Kempf died on July, 5, 2000, in Sacramento, Calif., at the age 81. He was born on July 26, 1918, to George and Gladys Kempf.

He grew up in Benson, graduated from Benson Union High School, and attended the University of Arizona. He joined the Merchant Marines during WW II and retired after 20 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Kempf.

He is survived by his sister, Lois Kempf Hamer; brother-in-law, Hal Hamer and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn B. Staley

1905-2000

Evelyn B. Staley, of Pearce-Sunsites, died July 17, 2000 in Willcox, at the age of 95. She was born in Lookout, La., on June 16, 1905, to Francis and Virginia (Griffith) Watkins.

She had been a resident of Sunsites since 1971 coming from New Jersey. She was a housewife and a member of The Community Church of Sunsites. She also enjoyed golf and was an avid bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Baird and Roger A. Staley; son, Joseph D. Staley; grandson, Roger Baird; sisters, Maude Vaughn and Mabel Callicott and brother, Frank Watkins.

She is survived by her son William (Carolyn) Baird of Fresno, Calif.; grandson, Thomas Baird; granddaughters, Lee Ann Peters and Allison Staley and sister, Virginia McGowan.

Memorial services will be held on August 10, 2000, at 10:00 a.m., at the Community Church of Sunsites with private burial of her ashes in Pearce Cemetery. Services under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.

Barclay A. Graham

1911-2000

Barclay A. Graham, of Willcox, died at his home, on Aug. 13, 2000, at the age of 89. He was born on Jan. 2, 1911, in Coleman, Texas, to Thomas Luther and Laura (Wester) Graham.

Mr. Graham came to Willcox in 1998 from Brownwood, Texas. He was a retired salesman for National Life & Accident Ins. Co. He started to work for National Life & Accident Ins. Company in 1941. He worked in Abilene, San Angelo and in the Midland-Odessa Office and also in the El Paso Office, all in Texas. Mr. Graham was a member of numerous sales award clubs including the Quarter Million Club and the Century Club. He was a member of Congregational Methodist Church in Brownwood, Texas and proudly served in the US Navy during WW II. He married Georgia Miller, in Marietta, Okla., in 1931.

A daughter, Anita Annelle Graham; grandson, Michael Graham Stevenson; a great-grandson, his parents, three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia of Willcox; daughter, Patty (J.D.) Stevenson of Willcox and grandchildren, Julie Annelle Laurence, Jeffrey J. Stevenson and Rebecca Georgia Stevenson all of Willcox; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; sister-in-laws, Violet Oswood and Jinkie Joiner both of Brownwood, Texas.

Funeral services were held in Brownwood, Texas on Aug. 19, 2000, with burial in Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early, Texas. Memorial services were held on Aug. 26, 2000, at Grace Chapel in Willcox.

Arrangements under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.

Nancy P. George

1921-1999

Nancy P. George, of Pomerene, died on Nov. 30, 1999, at the age of 78. Nancy was born on Nov. 18, 1921, in Blum, Tex., to Franklin and Pearl Jowell.

Nancy was a stenographer for the U.S. Army for 15 years at Ft. Huachuca. Nancy resided in the Pomerene area for 43 years. She previously lived in Carlsbad, N.M. She was also a member of the Baptist Church.

Nancy is survived by one son, Russ George of Juneau, Alaska; one daughter, Kay Doty of Pomerene; two brothers, Aubrey and Bill Jowell both of Cleburne, Tex.; four sisters, Iona Taylor, Barbara Smith, Clara and Charlyn all of Cleburne Tex.; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A grave side service was held on Dec. 6, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Cochise Gardens of Rest in Benson. Rev. David Morris of Benson Heights Southern Baptist Church, officiated the service.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Geraldine E. "Gerry" Dumas

1934-2000

Geraldine E. "Gerry" Dumas, of Willcox, died on Aug. 5, 2000, in Willcox, at the age of 66. She was born in Sterling, Colo., on Jan. 9, 1934, to Henry and Amelia (Sinner) Stark.

She came to Willcox in 1962 and was a owner of a antique shop and second hand store and also assisted in the operation of Willcox Pipe & Steel, along with her husband Leo Dumas who preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1985.

She is survived her sons, Gene (Ellen Kay) Dumas of Virden, N.M.; Michael (Kathleen) Dumas of Camp Verde and James (Millicent) Dumas of Willcox; daughters, Rebecca (Jeffery) Jerrard and Sherrill (Mack) Byrge both of Cottonwood; brother, Harold Stark of Canon City, Colo.; sisters, Mary Hirsch of Beaverton, Ore.; Frieda Wagner of Englewood, Colo. and Ernie Heimbegner of Sterling, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was held on Aug. 8, 2000 at Westlawn Chapel with funeral services held today, Aug. 9, 2000, at 10 a.m., at Westlawn Chapel with burial in Sunset Cemetery in Willcox.

Services under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary of Willcox.

Charles E. "Chuck" Beeler

1922-2000

Charles "Chuck" Beeler, a 40 year resident of Benson, died on Aug. 10, 2000, at the age of 78. He was born in Hampton, Virginia on July 8, 1922, to Georgia Nason (Kent) and Clinton Keeler Beeler.

Chuck was a welder for 40 years, U. S. Marine during W.W.II and a stunt man. He was a member of the Iron Workers Union, King Solomon Lodge #5 F&AM.

Chuck was a resident of Arizona for 45 years, including Green Valley,, and a previous resident in Palm Bay, Fla.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Poston Beeler of Benson; son Clinton Durane "Dru" Beeler; 2 daughters, Barbara McGee of Hamilton, Montana, and Laura Beeler of Avondale; a brother, John Beeler of Tucson; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 14, 2000, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center on Pomerene Road. Officiant of the service was Chaplain of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ken Chapman and King Solomon Lodge #5. Family Graveside was by Order of Eastern Star. Disposition was at St. David Cemetery, close to fellow Mason Dick Darnell.

Casket bearers were Bill Roark, Greg Welch, Jim Applegate, Richard Cleveland, Dru Beeler and J.D. Bullard.

Services were under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.
