Billy Ryan Mahan

A memorial service is scheduled today at 2 p.m. for former Verde Valley resident Billy Ryan Mahan. Mr. Mahan was 67 years old.

He was born Dec. 10, 1932, in Cottonwood and died Dec. 20, 1999, at his home in Temple, Texas.

Today's services will take place at the Scanio-Harper Funeral Home Chapel in Temple, Texas, with the Rev. Rodney Kruse officiating.

Mr. Mahan was a heavy equipment operator, mechanic and truck driver prior to his retirement in 1993. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. Mahan married Sandra Brillhart, Aug. 10, 1960, in Silver City, N.M.

Mr. Mahan moved to Temple, Texas, in 1991.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arah E. and Eunice Harper Mahan.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Mahan, of Temple, Texas; two sons, Michael Mahan of Temple, Texas, and Tim Ashby of Longmont, Colo.; three daughters, Cheryl Mumford of Las Vegas, N.M., Lisa Florance or Seattle, and Kayleen Mezei of Tucson; and one brother, Lee Mahan of Camp Verde; and 10 grandchildren.

Daisy Ethel Eade

Cottonwood resident Daisy Ethel Eade died Jan. 5, 2000 at the age of 88. She was born June 8, 1911, in Beardstown Precinct, Ill.

Mrs. Eade was an avid seamstress and homemaker. She loved her grandchildren, country/western and gospel music.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Brady of Prescott and Robert Eade of Cottonwood; six grandchildren, Lindsay Eade, Alissa Eade and Christine Eade, all of Prescott, Gene Brady, Elmer Brady and Carol Brady of Los Angeles.

Private family services have already taken place with Westcott Funeral Home of Cottonwood directing arrangements.

Gladys L. Dawson

Gladys L. Dawson, 96, of Cottonwood, died on Jan. 6, 2000.

She was born Nov. 4, 1903, in Lebanon, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Dawson who operated a refrigeration business in Ukiah, Calif., for many years. Mrs. Dawson was a real estate broker in Ukiah, Flagstaff and Sedona.

Mrs. Dawson had a passion for collecting and studying meteorites and donated her collection to Arizona State University.

Mrs. Dawson is survived by two sons, Lawrence E. Dawson, Cottonwood, Robert B. Dawson, Flagstaff; and a brother, Lee Griffin, Chino Valley. She is also Survived by two grandchildren, David Dawson, Moab, Utah, and Diane Immethun, Flagstaff, and three great grandchildren.

Private services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Dawson Family Scholarship fund for a Native American graduate student at Northern Arizona University.

Betty J. McNaul

Betty Jean (Roberts) McNaul, 76, Cornville, died Jan. 6, 2000.

Mrs. McNaul was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Ottawa, Kan.

She was a retired bookkeeper.

Mrs. McNaul is survived by a daughter, Martha Ann McNaul of Cornville; a granddaughter, Laurel Marie Riedel and grandson-in-law, Joseph William Riedel, both of Cornville; and two great-grandchildren, Avery Nicole Riedel and Timothy Samuel Riedel, also both of Cornville.

Private services have been held. Arrangements by Westcorr Funeral Home.

Elizabeth M. Clark

Cottonwood resident Elizabeth Mae Clark died Jan. 6, 2000. She was 71.

Mrs. Clark was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Steubenville, Ohio.

She worked as a bookkeeper and locally was a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband, Nathaniel Ray Clark; three sisters, Helen G. Sitterly of Lake Montezuma, Corinne S. Beard and Mary Lou Neal, both of Cottonwood.

A memorial service for Mrs. Clark will take place Jan. 11, 11 a.m., at the Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Donations is Mrs. Clark's memory may be made to the Mountain View United Methodist Church, 901 S. 12 St., Cottonwood, 86326.

Madeline L. Chesnut

Cottonwood resident Madeline Louise Wood-Chesnut died Jan. 9, 2000 at the age of 69.

She was born in Lansing, Mich., Dec. 15, 1931.

Ms. Chesnut was a retired bookkeeper. She was a volunteer for Hospice, the Boys and Girls Club and was a senior volunteer with the Clarkdale Police Department.

Survivors include two brothers, David Wood of Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Joseph Wood and his wife Clara of Greenville, N.C.; a cousin, Marilyn Garchow of Cottonwood; a niece, Cindy Fairman of Moreno Valley, Calif. and two nephews, John Wood of Moreno Valley and Mark Wood of Whittier, Calif.

Private family services were held and Westcott Funeral Home handles the arrangements.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Northern Arizona Hospice, 269 S. Candy Lane, Cottonwood, 86326, or to the Boys and Girls Club of Cottonwood, 817 N. 2nd Street, Cottonwood, 86326.

Melvin C. Helsel

Clarkdale resident Melvin Charles Helsel, died Jan. 7, 2000 at the age of 82.

He was born May 27, 1917 in Roaring Springs, Pa.

Mr. Helsel was a veteran of WWII, having served with the United States Navy. He was an accountant and moved to Flagstaff in 1954. There he was a member of the Federated Community Church in Flagstaff and of the Flagstaff Noon Lions Club. He worked for Cheshire Motors, Gordon Steel, Bonnor Enterprises and Frost & McHood CPA's.

He retired to the Valley in 1984. He was a past president and an active member of the Cottonwood Lions Club and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship from the Lions Club International. Mr. Helsel was also a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church. He was an amateur woodworker and made furniture for the church.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte L. Helsel; two sons, Norman Lee Helsel of Sacramento and Melvin Brent Helsel of Flagstaff; a daughter, Ruth Ann Sedgley of Gilbert; three grand-sons, Timothy Sedgley of Gilbert, Stephen Helsel of Sacramento and Douglas Helsel of Flagstaff; two grand-daughters, Gwen Helsel of Sacramento and Rebecca Helsel of Flagstaff and a sister, Vesta Fasick of Pennsylvania. Another grand-daughter, Erin Sedgley, proceeded him in death.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. in the Mountain View United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mountain View Methodist Church, 901 S. 12th St., Cottonwood, 86326, or to the Northern Arizona Hospice.

Velma Lee Dunlap

A graveside service was held Jan. 11 at the Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale for Cottonwood resident Velma Lee Dunlap.

Mrs. Dunlap died Jan. 7, 2000 at the age of 90.

She was born October 11, 1909, in Shep, Texas.

Mrs. Dunlap was a long-time resident of the Verde Valley. She was a homemaker, a member of the Southern Baptist Church, and an avid golfer and bowler.

Survivors include a son, Hank R. Dunlap of Prescott; a daughter, Ann Sims of Florence; a sister, Mildred Fuller of Houston, Texas; two granddaughters, Suzan Fisher and Meredith Dunlap both of Prescott; a grandson, Clint Dunlap of Camp Verde; a great-granddaughter, Shelby Dunlap of Myrtle Creek and two great-grandsons, Aaron Fisher and Ryan Fisher of Prescott.

Westcott Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

James R. Peeples

Jerome resident James R. Peeples, died Jan. 9, 2000 at the age of 50.

He was born in Elkhart, Ind., July 31, 1949.

Survivors include his parents Leonard and Hilde Antinellio of Elkhart, Ind.; 3 brothers, Dan Peeples of Carmel, Ind., Mike Antinellio and David Antinellio both of Elkhart, Ind.; a sister, Monica Antinellio of Texas and many local friends.

A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Westcott Funeral Home.

LeRoy Carr

A gathering is scheduled for 10 a.m Friday at the Ranch House at Beaver Creek Golf Course in memory of Camp Verde resident LeRoy Carr.

Mr. Carr died Jan. 10, 2000.

He was born March 24, 1921, in Tularosa, N.M.

Mr. Carr grew up in Buckeye and graduated from Buckeye Union High School in 1938. He received his bachelor of arts degree in Education from Northern Arizona University.

A well-known educator and coach, Mr. Carr taught school in Camp Verde for 30 years.

He served with the U.S. Army Antitank Company, 158th Infantry "Bushmaster" during World War II in the Panama Canal Zone and Southwest Pacific.

Survivors include his wife, Frances G. Carr; three sons, Gary Carr of Wickenburg, Michael Carr of the Philippines and Ron Carr of Mesa; a sister, Mary Hardesty of Buckeye and a brother, Sam Carr of Colorado and six grandchildren.

Maurice Lee Atkins

Cornville resident and World War II veteran Maurice Atkins died Jan. 6, 2000 in Prescott.

He was 79 years old.

Mr. Atkins was born Aug. 3, 1920, in Eckerty, Ind., the son of Wilson and Esther (Dearborn) Atkins.

He was in real estate, trailer sales and mining development. He had lived in the Verde Valley since 1970.

Mr. Atkins' family remembers him as a visionary during his active years.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his daughter, Arlene Stephenson of California; two sons, Lorin and Arnold Atkins of California; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1377 Hombre Dr. in Cottonwood.

Dorothy Wright

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Mountain View United Methodist Church for Cottonwood resident Dorothy (Zimmerman) Eigel Wright. Visitation will precede the service at noon and burial will follow in Denver.

Mrs. Wright died Jan. 10, 2000.

She was born March 13, 1913, in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Wright was a retired bookkeeper and a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the United Women's Fellowship and its Mary Circle. Mrs. Wright was a lifetime member of the Cottonwood Roadrunners.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Donald J. Eigel and Mervyn F. Wright.

Survivors include two sons, Donald J. Eigel Jr. of Texas and Lawrence E. Eigel of Texas; a daughter, Norma D. Pemberton of Indiana; three sisters, Marjorie Cantril of Kansas, Rosa Lee Middleton of Kansas and Lillian Moss of Texas; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in the memory of Dorothy Wright to the Mountain View United Methodist Church, 901 S. 12th St., Cottonwood 86326.
