Mathilda V. Wieting

Camp Verde resident Mathilda V. Wieting died Feb. 2, 2000 at the age of 73.

She was born Dec. 23, 1927, in Portland, Ore.

Mrs. Wieting was a resident of Arizona for 53 years and worked as a secretary.

She enjoyed bingo, cooking, arts and crafts and being a wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Carl P. Wieting; two sons, Mark Wieting of Chandler and Richard Wieting of Glendale; and a daughter, Marilyn Kleen of Deer Valley.

Funeral services were held Feb. 5 by Westcott Funeral Home.

Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery in Phoenix.

Lou Fortina

Sedona resident Lou Fortina died Jan. 27, 2000 at the age of 71.

He was born in Jutland, N.J., on Nov. 20, 1929.

Mr. Fortina attended school in Clinton, N.J.

He was a Navy veteran serving with the Seabees in Newfoundland, North Africa and Cuba.

Mr. Fortina was an auto mechanic in N.J. In 1976, he moved to Sedona for health reasons and set up Lou's Garage on Airport Road.

Retiring from that in 1983, he became president of Oak Creek Water Co.

In 1995, he retired again.

Survivors include his wife, Lucia; three stepchildren, four step grandchildren and a sister, Louise Learn of Cottonwood.

A memorial service will be held Feb. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sedona Elks' Club.

Donations may be made to the Northern Arizona Hospice, 269 S. Candy Ln., Cottonwood, 86326 or the Sedona Elks, 110 Airport Rd., Sedona, 86336.

Lucy M. Clifford

Cottonwood resident Lucy Clifford died Feb. 1, 2000.

Mrs. Clifford was 84 years old.

She was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Major, Okla.

Mrs. Clifford had worked in the dry cleaning business for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert John Clifford, who died in 1988.

Survivors include three brothers, Thomas E. "Gene" Jones of Oklahoma, Orvin J.and Dwayne Jones of Kansas; one sister, Virginia Snodgrass of Oklahoma and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Feb. 4 in the Cottonwood Cemetery.

Leo "Lee" Edward Tepoel

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Cottonwood.

Mr. Tepoel died Feb. 1, 2000 at the age of 88.

He was born Sept. 17, 1911 in Faith, S.D.

Mr. Tepoel was a former cattle rancher and served as an assistant superintendent for the National Western Stock Show. He owned Tepoel Veterinary Supplies.

Survivors include his wife Pearl and a son, Bob Tepoel of Colorado.

Ysidora M. Newton

Ysidora M. "Lola" Newton of Cornville died Jan. 28, 2000.

A Jerome native, Mrs. Newton was born April 4, 1923, the daughter of Cecilio Mejia and Sevastiana Jauriqui.

Mrs. Newton and her husband John owned and operated John Newton's Rockyard on Page Springs Road.

They also operated the Valley Grocery Store at Aspen and Arizona 89A in Cottonwood from the 1940s until 1983.

Survivors include her children, Anthony Newton of Cottonwood, Jessie Morales of Phoenix, Albert Morales of Claypool, Mary Davenport of Oklahoma, Marge Soqui of Phoenix and Sandra Ochoa of New Mexico; two sisters, Lupe Bauer and Grace Hodgesen; two brothers, Mike Mejia and Ray Mejia and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Newton on Feb. 21, 1999.

Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at Cottonwood's Westcott Funeral Home, Gary Phillips officiated.

Jane N. Poppre

Private family services were held for Cornville resident Jane Poppre.

Mrs. Poppre died Feb. 1, 2000 at the age of 80.

She was born June 4, 1919, in Niagara Falls, NY.

Mrs. Poppre had worked as a medical technician and lived with her husband on the New Jersey Shore from 1953 to 1985 before relocating to Arizona.

She was a member of St. Cecelia's Mission Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, George Poppre; three daughters, Kathleen Porter of New Jersey, Nora Sykes of Kansas and Mary Billman of Missouri; a son, Michael Poppre of Scottsdale and 11 grandchildren.

David W. Brest Sr.

World War II veteran David Brest Sr. of Cottonwood died Jan. 31, 2000 at the Verde Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Brest was 77 years old.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and lived in Lorain, Ohio, for 25 years before retiring in 1984 from the Ohio Truck Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio.

He served with the Second Rangers in Normandy on D-Day and was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons in Pennsylvania.

Mr. Brest was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Brest Sr., and Mamie (Brinling) Brest; two brothers, Charles Brest Jr., and Angus Condron and two sisters, Olive Medberry and Elizabeth Offen.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mabel (Hunter) Brest of Cottonwood; a son, David W. Brest Jr. of Ohio; a daughter, Diane Cochrane of Prescott Valley; four grandchildren, David Cochrane of Cottonwood, Jefferson Cochrane of Camp Verde and Kimberly Ann Brest and Courtney Lynn Brest of Ohio and two great-granddaughters, Kelsey Beth Cochrane and Sarah Lorraine Cochrane of Cottonwood.

Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood.

Winifred Talsma Devries

Funeral services are scheduled for Feb. 8 in Hudson, S.D., for Cottonwood resident Winifred Talsma Devries.

Mrs. Devries died Feb. 2, 2000.

She was 87 years old.

Mrs. Devries was born Feb. 27, 1912 in Freisland, Netherlands.

She came with her parents as a child and settled in South Dakota.

She married Harry Devries on Sept. 6, 1932.

Together they farmed near Hudson, S.D., until retiring in 1973.

Mrs. Devries was an active member of Hudson Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986.

Survivors include her son, Harry Jay Devries; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Devries, a daughter, Leann Bales; a son-in-law, Marvin Bales; five grandchildren, Dale and Duane Devries and Leith, Lex and Lann Burgers; three great-grandchildren, David, Daniel and Dylan Devries; one brother and three sisters.

David W. Brest, Sr.

Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at the Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood. Gene Risch conducted the service, burial was held in Cottonwood Cemetery.

Franc Mosher Christensen

Former Clarkdale resident Franc Mosher Christensen died in Nevada Jan. 23, 2000.

She was 87 years old.

Mrs. Christensen was born Oct. 21, 1912 to Arthur and Florence (Angle) Mosher in Zumbrota, Minn.

She moved to Ely, Nevada from Clarkdale in 1998.

Mrs. Christensen was a registered nurse for 62 years before retiring.

She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Cottonwood Chapter and a member of Order of Eastern Star, Ely Chapter.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ely and the Clarkdale Women's Club.

During her membership in the Women's Club she helped to establish and support the Clarkdale Library.

Mrs. Christensen enjoyed music and playing bridge.

Survivors include her son, G. Norman (Joyce) Christensen of Ely; three grandchildren, George N. Christensen III of Kansas, Deborah Christensen of Oregon and Bret Christensen of Washington; two great grandchildren, Hayden Liao of Scappoose and Drake of Ellensburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1992 and son Bill M. in 1994.

A memorial service was held Feb. 5 in Ely.

Memorials may be sent to the Ely United Methodist Church Building Fund, 750 Lyons Ave., Ely, Nev. 89301.
