Mary B. Dixon

Mrs. Mary Benson Dixon 92, of Douglas passed away January 6, 1999 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.

Mrs. Dixon was born on November 21, 1906 in Douglas. She attended local schools and graduated from Douglas High School in 1924. She received her teaching degree from Arizona State University. Mrs. Dixon taught music in the Douglas schools and later taught second grade in Naco, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years James O. Dixon in 1993.

She is survived by her brother, James Benson of Yuma, her brother-in-law Paul Huber, Jr. of Douglas, four nephews, eight nieces, 21 great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 10 at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 11 at St. Luke's Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers who will serve are Robert N. Benson, James Benson, John Benson, Joe Huber, Gary Gunsolley and William Risius.

Honorary pallbearers are David Elzy, Sr., David Elzy, Jr., Paul James Huber and Ted Kaden.

Brown Page Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Rasmus O. Hetle

Rasmus O. Hetle, age 86, passed away Dec. 30, 1998.

He is survived by former Dorothy Krentz, whom he married in Sitka, Alaska in 1952. He was born in Briem, Norway and moved to the United States at age 18.

He moved to Arizona in 1970 during his four year Army service he was in the Battle of the Bulge and the Armies Norwegian ski patrol.

Graveside Lutheran services will be at the Douglas Calvary Cemetery at 1 p.m. January 16, 1999.

Emil Oventile

Mr. Emil Oventile of Douglas passed away Saturday, January 9, 1999 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.

Mr. Oventile was born January 6, 1911 in Douglas. He worked for a time at the shipyards in California and traveled with his brother throughout Italy before returning to Douglas where he was self-employed as a plumber until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Luke's Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Oventile in 1986 and his brother Ernie Oventile.

Mr.. Oventile is survived by his daughter, Barbara Jean Oventile and his son David Oventile of Douglas.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Luke's Church. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday also at St. Luke's Church with Father Bob Carney officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers who will serve are Joe Giacoletti, Mark Giacoletti, Freddy Giacoletti, Aaron Giacoletti, Celedonio Reyes and William Hope.

Virginia A. Butterfield

Mrs. Virginia A. Butterfield of Douglas died January 22, 1999 at the Douglas Manor Care Center.

Mrs. Butterfield was born May 28, 1908 in Alameda, California to Peter and Louise Myron Axdal who were immigrants from Norway. Her father was a ship captain and died during WWII.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She has been an Arizona resident since 1973 coming here from California where she was Postmistress in Mountain Ranch, California prior to her retirement in 1973.

She is survived by her cousin, Shirley Pederson of Walnut Creek, Ca.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. today at Calvary Cemetery with Bishop Donald Huish officiating.

Vancil D. Stanford

Mr. Vancil D. Stanford, longtime Douglas educator, died January 21, 1999 at the Sierra Vista Community Hospital.

Mr. Stanford was born January 13, 1918 in Clay City, Illinois. He has been a local resident for the past 57 years.

Mr. Stanford was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII and Korea. He also served in the Army Reserves, retiring with a rank of Lt. Col. He was an educator for the Douglas Unified School District for 36 years. He also served on the Douglas City Council as an Alderman and Mayor Pro-Tem. He was active with the local food bank and for many years he taught citizenship classes for people wanting to become U.S. citizens. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW.

Mr. Stanford was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Jordan Stanford on February 15, 1989.

He is survived by his sons, Warren and Keith Stanford of Tucson, Arizona and relatives, Petra and Rudolph Campas of Douglas.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Luke's Church with Father Bob Carney officiating. Burial will follow at the Veterans Plot at Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors by the fort Huachuca Honor Guard.

Pallbearers who will serve are, Keith Stanford, Warren Stanford, Vance Stanford, Jason Stanford, Nita Stanford and Robert Campas.

Honorary pallbearers are Rudolph Campas, and H.C. Stanford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Douglas Food Bank.

Ninelle Hopkins Pulliam

Ninelle Hopkins Pulliam, born April 24, 1926 in Douglas; died January 12, 1999 in Dallas. Survived by daughters Terry Schiele of Denver, Lynn Pulliam of Dallas; grandchildren Kristen Schiele, Chad Schiele and Jay Pulliam.

Private family services are to be held Wednesday, January 20 at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to Operation Kindness Animal Shelter, 1029 Trend Drive, Carrollton, TX 75066.

Victor C. Gulliver, Sr.

Mr. Victor C. Gulliver, Sr. of Douglas entered eternal rest January 15, 1999 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.

He was born February 24, 1924 to Eduardo and Maria Catalan Gulliver. On February 1943 he entered the US Army. He was assigned to A company, First Battalion 163rd Rifle Regiment of the 41st Infantry Division.

He served in New Guinea, Dutch East Indies and the Philippines. He returned to the states in December and was released from active duty January 6, 1946 as S/Sgt. Among his citations were the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

He did carpentry work for some time until working as a miner in Bisbee with Phelps dodge Corp. He retired in 1985. In 1946 he married Alice Sierra. he was a member of St. Luke's church and The American Legion. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Gulliver in 1991.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years Alice Gulliver; daughters, Lydia Gulliver Rendon, Sally (Jose Alonzo) Portugal and Vickie (Paul) Valenzuela of Douglas and Nancy (John) Greer of Tucson and Nanette (Mark) Romo of Silver City, New Mexico; sons, Victor (Toni) Gulliver, Jr., and Gary Gulliver of Douglas; step-children Viviano, Pablo and Eddie Dominguez. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Luke's Church. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday also at St. Luke's Church with Father bob Carney officiating. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery with military graveside services by the American Legion and VFW.

Pallbearers who will serve are Gary Gulliver, Victor Gulliver, Jr., Jose Alonzo Portugal, Jr., Victor Gulliver III, Aric Portugal and Mark Romo, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers are Jose Alonzo Portugal, Sr., John Greer, Mark Romo, Sr., Paul Valenzuela, Kenny Gulliver, John B. Greer, Jr., Alan Rendon, Julian Rendon, Jr., Sean Romo, Dr. Edward Gulliver and Ed Ramos.

Irene May Chenowth

Mrs. Irene May Chenowth of McNeal passed away January 15, 1999 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center.

Mrs. Chenowth was born September 18, 1921 in Seaford, Delaware. She had been an Arizona resident for the past 53 years. Mrs. Chenowth worked in a Douglas shirt factory for a number of years and then worked for 22 years at the County Hospital as a nurse's aide. She retired in 1986.

Surviving is her husband Douglas G. Chenowth of McNeal; children Sarah Antoinette Mayer of Playas, New Mexico, Douglas Lloyd Chenowth of Bisbee and Terry Douglas Chenowth of McNeal; sisters, Margaret Smith and Nita Taylor; brothers, Bobby Taylor and Jimmy Taylor. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Robert Prudler officiating.

Burial will follow at the McNeal Cemetery.

Pallbearers who will serve are Adam Plunkett, Eric Plunkett, Charlie Iman, Charlie Wilson, George Mayer and Douglas Chenowth.

Richard Lara

Mr. Richard Lara of Douglas passed away January 13, 1999 at the Life Care Center in Sierra Vista.

Mr. Lara was born October 5, 1932 in Douglas.

He served as a Sgt. with the 82nd Army Airborne division in the Korean War as a paratrooper. He was honorably discharged April 16, 1953. He then worked for Phelps Dodge as a miner and he also owned Lara Ornamental Shop for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lilia F. Lara; his children Frank and Rose Lara, Celina and Marko Stoyanof, Lucy and Mike Smuh, George and Louisa Lara, Edgardo Lara and Lorenzo Lara.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Stephanie, Celina, Lily, Vicky, Teresa, Richard and Amanda.

His passion was fishing, camping and his grandchildren.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Luke's Church with Father Bob Carney officiating. Mr. Lara will be cremated and a private burial will follow.

Pallbearers who will serve are, George Lara, Frank Lara, Mike Smith, Marco Stoyanof, Edgardo Lara and Lorenzo Lara.

Efren E. Martinez

Efren E. Martinez, 50, a lifetime resident of Arizona, passed away January 8, 1999. He was born July 5, 1948 in Douglas.

Survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Brenda; daughters, Tina and Cindy Martinez; sons, Richard Martinez and Efren Rene (Michelle) Martinez; 10 grandchildren, Roger, Anthony, Eddie, Richie, Richard, James, Ruben, Crystal, Katrina and Christie; brothers, Salvador (Margie) Martinez, Jose (Lourdes) Martinez, Mike Martinez, Ernest (Rosemary) Martinez, David and Bobby Martinez; sisters, Irma Mosher, Amelia Dominguez and Norma Martinez.

A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 14, 1999 at South Lawn Mortuary, 5401 S. Park Ave. Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 1999 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tucson. South Lawn Mortuary is a certified aftercare provider.

Eric James Hansen

Eric James Hansen, born in Douglas on September 7, 1966, died suddenly on Saturday, January 9, 1999 at his home in Mesa, Arizona. He had been sporadically ill since July of 1998 and returned to the Lord peacefully in his sleep from complications due to pneumonia.

Eric graduated from Douglas High School in 1984, Chabot College, Hayward, California, in 1986, and Northern Arizona University in 1988 with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. He was employed in a supervisory position with DHL Airways, Inc. in Tempe.

While in high school, he was active in American Field Service and was a foreign exchange student to Finland in 1983. He also was a member of his high school tennis team and several other clubs and organizations.

Eric was preceded in death by his father, Harold C. Hansen. He is survived by his mother Lourdes (Lou), 4989 N. Plaza Amor, Tucson, AZ 85704; brothers Robert (Rose) of San Lorenzo California, Richard (Liz) and Dennis (Tracey Ames) of Tucson; sister Christine (Nicholas) Rowton of Crowborough, East Sussex, England; six nephews and three nieces.

Memorial services will b held Saturday, January 16, 1999 at 11 a.m. at St. Odelia's Catholic Church, 7570 N. Paseo Del Norte, Tucson, with interment scheduled for a later date.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the family suggests donations be made to the Douglas Association for Retarded Citizens.

Lourdes Hansen expresses gratitude toward her many friends from Douglas who have called to express their condolences and offer their prayers.

Gloria Foster

Gloria Foster died September 30, 1998 in Scottsdale, AZ.

Gloria was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Ventura, CA where she attended grammar school and Ventura Junior College. Later she graduated from Sawyer's Business College in Los Angeles and was employed as Executive Secretary until her marriage to Harry Foster of Douglas, AZ.

She owned and operated the Gloria Foster Ladies Specialty shop in Douglas, AZ and gave a great many style shows for charities and scholarships in her husband's name to students attending Cochise College. "Oldtimers" will remember the beautiful fashion shows she staged on the stairway of the Gadsden Hotel.

Upon her husband's death in 1967, Gloria moved to Scottsdale, AZ and did volunteer work where needed and was an active Precinct Captain and Deputy registrar for the Republican Party. She held the position of Hospitality Chairman for the Las Rancheros Republican Women's club for many years.

Gloria was a world traveler, having visited all seven continents and most countries in addition to all the states in the United States.

Survivors include her niece Helen Andrews; great nieces Marianne Belote; Nancy Plymale and husband Bill of Camarillo, CA; Joanne Criss and husband Danny of Lancaster, CA; great-great nephew Sam Belote; great-great nieces Katy Belote, Megan and Karen Plymale of Camarillo, CA and Carrie and Kimberly Criss of Lancaster, CA. Sister-in-law Helen Cornelius of Sunnyvale, CA; nephews Dan Winterburn and wife Linda; Rick Winterburn and wife Judy all of Sunnyvale, CA.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 4, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at Messinger Mortuary & Chapel, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale, AZ.
