Jose Alberto Ruiz

Jose Alberto Ruiz died April 27, 2003. He was 57. A funeral mass was held on April 29 at San Felipe De Jesus in Nogales.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona Olga Ruiz, son, Jose Alberto and daughters, Gynna Ruiz and Denisse Karla Ruiz.

Arrangements were by Adair's Caroon Mortuary in Nogales.

Demetrio R. Kerson

Demetrio R. Kerson, 81, passed away on July 30, 2003. A funeral Mass was held Aug. 4 at Sacred Heart Church.

He is survived by a brother, Alphonse (Cody); a sister, Rosa Elena Kerson; and a nephew, Chris H. Kerson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alex; and by his parents, Chris and Rosa Kerson.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Henry C. Martinez

Henry C. Martinez, 61, passed away on Aug. 1, 2003. A funeral Mass was held Aug. 5 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Tubac.

He is survived by a daughter, April Martinez; a brother, Jose Luis; and a sister, Lupe.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Leroy Tibbs

Leroy Tibbs, 77, passed away on April 30, 2003 and a funeral was held on May 5 at Sahuarita First Assembly Church.

He is survived by his wife, Maria de Lourdes Solis-Tibbs; two sons, Carter and Daniel; three daughters, Debie Cannon, Deanna Stacy and Crystal Smith; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Luis Gonzalez

A funeral Mass was held May 3 for Luis Gonzalez, 90, who died on April 30, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria Moran de Gonzalez; five sons, Luis, Carlos, Arturo, Jesus and Daniel; three brothers, Jesus, Santos and Pedro; three sisters, Tonivia, Refugio and Juana; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Joseph R. Tena

Services were held Nov. 27, 2002 for Joseph R. Tena, 78, of Tucson, who died on Nov. 22. He grew up in Nogales and graduated from Nogales High School where he was student body president.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Luisa Tena; his sister, Beatrice Gordon; his four children, Joseph R. Tena Jr., Philip J. Tena, Renee L. Bathe and Andrea N. Kenney; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Bring's Broadway Chapel, 6910 E. Broadway, Tucson.

Jeanne B. "Ammie" Ice

A memorial service is scheduled today in Tucson for Jeanne B. "Ammie" Ice, 81, a long-time Nogales resident, who died on Nov. 25, 2002.

She and her husband, George, lived in Nogales for 40 years where they owned and operated a produce distribution company.

George died in 1997. She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Gil) Munguia; grandchildren Gil (Ellen) Munguia and Debbie (Frank) Bencomo; seven grandchildren; brothers Irving and Cornelius and sisters Helene and Naydene.

The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. at Adair Funeral Homes, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave., Tucson. Interment will be with her husband at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeanne's name to the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Cruz County, 590 N. Tyler Ave., Nogales, 85621 or Alzheimer's Association, 5132 E. Pima, Tucson, 85712.

Pedro Gonzales Cervantes

Services were held Aug. 30 for Pedro Gonzales Cervantes, 78, of Nogales who died on Aug. 27, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; a son, Pedro P. Cervantes; four daughters, Martha Miller, Dora Elias, Cecilia Sene and Yolanda Tucker; two brothers, Macario Olivarria and Candelario Olivarria; four sisters, Maria Ritter, Maria Elena Martinez, Francisca Villa and Matilde Mazon; and 12 grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels.

ESTEBAN FEDERICO

Esteban Federico, 76, passed away on May 14, 2003. A Funeral Mass was held on May 16 at Sacred Heart Church in Nogales.

He is survived by his wife, Maria de Los Angeles Angulo Federico; sons, Leo, Roger, Luis, Eddie, Federico, Rudy Federico; brothers, Juan, Francisco, Ramon Federico; sisters; Guadalupe, Consuelo, Trinidad, Esperanza; 18 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Carroons Mortuary.

Angel Shorty S. Jimenez

Services will be held Monday for Angel "Shorty" S. Jimenez, 93, of Patagonia who died on Dec. 17, 2002.

A mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Patagonia. A Rosary will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at Martinez Funeral Chapel.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Mary H. Jimenez; a brother, Ricardo; two sons, Edward and Michael; three daughters, Mary Lou Jimenez, Margarita Montero and Bertha Hess; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels.

Jose Luis Vega

Services were held Dec. 17 for Jose Luis Vega, 80, who died on Dec. 14, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria M. Vega; two sons, Jose Luis and Jorge Fernando; three daughters, Maria Gloria Quinones, Martha Eugenia Gamaz and Magda Eduviges Varela; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Mateo G. Barba

Services were held Dec. 13 for Mateo G. Barba, 71, who died on Dec. 8, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Barba; two sons, Mario and Ricardo; three daughters, Sonia Dabdoub, Susana Carey and Monica Barba; and nine grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels.

Carlota A. de Marmolejo

Services were held Dec. 19 for Carlota A. de Marmolejo, 78, who died on Dec. 14, 2002.

She is survived by her husband, Fidel; daughter Maritza Marmolejo-Villesenor and son-in-law Oscar Villasenor; three grandchildren, Ariel, Oscar Jr. and Victoria Villasenor; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous grand nephews.

Arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels.

William Tompkins

William Tompkins, 90, died on Dec. 7, 2002.

He is survived by two sons, William David, and Billy of Idaho; and a daughter, Wilma Smith, of Oregon.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Manuel Octavio Balderrama

Services were held Tuesday for Manuel Octavio Balderrama, 36, who died on Sept. 22, 2002.

He is survived by his mother, Elena Zazueta de Balderrama; his father, Manuel Balderrama; his sister, Nora Olivia Balderrama; and three brothers, Alonso, Martin and Jorge Balderrama.

Arrangements were handled by Adair's Carroon Mortuary.

Julia E. Alvarez

A funeral service was held May 22 for Julia E. Alvarez, 91, of Nogales, who died on May 21, 2003.

She is survived by two sons, Jose M. and Carlos Alvarez; two daughters, Teresa Salazar and Cuqui Dougherty; 15 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels.

Elvin Houston Rogers

Services are pending for Elvin Houston Rogers, 34, of Tubac who died in a motorcycle accident on Dec. 22, 2002.

He was a 1995 cum laude graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University.

He was employed as an archeologist in the Vanishing Treasures Program at Tumacacori National Historical Park, where he was developing a method for documenting preservation work done on adobe ruins.

He is survived by his mother, Peggy Thompson and her husband, David, of Amarillo, Texas; his father, Jerry I. Rogers of Santa Fe, N.M., and his wife, Nancy M. Burgas; a sister, Tiana (Dale) Conklin of Leesburg, Va.; a brother, Jeffrey; his grandmother, Hazel Sifford of Amarillo; five nephews and a niece.

Donations in his memory may be sent to the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance, P.O. Box 2490, Santa Fe, N.M., 87504-2490.

Robert M. Brubaker

Services were held Oct. 1 for Robert M. Brubaker, 44, who died on Sept. 26, 2002.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Josephine Brubaker; wife, Perri; two sons, Bobby and Brian; sister Ruth Rimmer; brother-in-law Brian Rimmer; and two nieces.

Alfredo Rivera

Services were held Sept. 30 for Alfredo Rivera Alvarez, 80, who died on Sept. 27, 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Consuelo Alvarez; five sons, Alfredo Jr., Jesus, Lorenzo, Marcos Antonio and Alejandro; six daughters, Margot Hernandez, Maria Alvarez, Angie Alvarez, Eulalia Noriega, Francis Stinnett and Alicia Alvarez; a brother, Armando Alvarez; two sisters, Enedina Alvarez and Angelita Echevarria; 23 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Martinez Funeral Chapels.

George W. McGill

George W. McGill, 62, of Scottsdale died on May 25, 2003.

He was publisher of the weekly Southern Arizona Trails newspaper in Tubac about 10 years ago.

He is survived by his four children, Tim, Terry, Tom and Tracy; two grandchildren; and his former wife Betty McGill.

He is also survived by his mother, Helen McGill, of Port Ritchie, Fla., and five brothers and sisters.

Green Acres Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Carl W. Cooper

Carl W. Cooper, 85, of Patagonia, passed away on Dec. 2, 2002. He was born on Sept. 22, 1917 in Hillsboro, Ill. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Marilyn Cooper; three children, Michael Cooper, Patty (Fred) Cooper Tellam and Pamela Cooper Soldwedel; two stepchildren, Scott Anderson and Erin Anderson; two grandchildren, Kelly and Brett Soldwedel.

Carl moved to Tucson in 1927. He graduated from Tucson High School in 1935. He attended the University of Arizona, graduated in 1940 with a bachelors of science degree in education and continued his education at the University of Southern California, where he earned a masters degree in physical education/sports medicine. While attending school, he earned letters in football, basketball and track.

He entered the U.S. Air Corp. in 1941 as a private and was discharged as a major in 1946. He coached at numerous locations throughout Arizona and California. He started his coaching career at the University of Arizona in 1951. His career included being head track and cross country coach and assistant football coach until 1968. While at the UA, he coached 12 All-Americans, three national champions, one Pan-Am game champion, three U.S. Olympians and his team won six conference championships. He was inducted into the UA Sports Hall of Fame, Pima County Sports Hall of Fame and the Kappa Sigma Hall of Fame.

He was the assistant track coach of the United States team during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, was president of the U.S. Track Coaches Association and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. From 1968-78, he was the executive director of the U.S. Track and Field Federation and retired in 1978.

Upon retirement, he became the founder and sole proprietor of Little Ranch School from 1977-84, his former family home. He and his wife, Marilyn, relocated to Patagonia in 1984 where he ranched and rode. His hobbies included tennis, riding, camping, fishing, travel and sailing on his boat, the "Wildcat." He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
