Abigail Fitts
Abigail Fitts died at her home in Ajo on February 11, 2002, at the age of 5 months 25 days. She was born in Sells on August 17, 2001, to Bessie Antone and Michael Fitts. She is survived by her parents, her brother and sisters, and many other family members. Services were held in the Indian Assembly of God Church on February 20; burial was in the Childs Cemetery.

Laura Estrella
Laura Estrella, 91, died January 24, 2002, in San Luis, Sonora, Mexico. She was born In Pitiquito, Sonora, Mexico, on December 10, 1910. she came to Ajo to live with her daughter Elvia Celaya in 1981 and stayed here for twenty years. She is survived by her children and other family members. Services were held in Mexico.

Mark T. Grooms
Mark T. Grooms, 74, died February 20, 2002, in Ajo. He was born in Flint, Michigan, on January 30, 1928, the son of Mark & Beulah (Roxbury) Grooms. He was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War. He retired from work as a truck driver. He and his wife, Ardith Grooms, moved to Ajo two days before his death. He is survived by his wife, his son & daughters, and other family members.

George Frank Dewitt
George Frank Dewitt, 78, died March 6, 2002, in Prescott. He was born August 26, 1923, in McCurtain, Oklahoma, to Frank R. & Ada Renfrow Dewitt. He came to Ajo in 1937 and lived here until moving to the Arizona Pioneer Home in 1996. He was a warehouseman when he retired from Phelps Dodge in 1982. He is survived by his son & daughter and other family members. Services were held in Ajo Calvary Baptist Church; burial was next to his wife Nellie in Ajo Cemetery.

Virgil Robert "Bob" Barger
Virgil Robert "Bob" Barger, 70, died March 7, 2002, in Tucson. He was born May 26, 1931, in Denver, Colorado, to Virgil & Hazel Stoddard Barger. He earned a degree in electronic engineering from Denver University and enjoyed a career with Hughes Aircraft. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He moved to Ajo in 1988 and married Carolyn Mulleneaux Jacobs. He is survived by his wife, children, step-children, and many other family members. Services were held in Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church; burial was in Ajo Cemetery.

Robert R. Ross Sr.
Robert R. Ross Sr., 82, died March 19, 2002, in Casa Grande. He was born February 16, 1920, in Ajo, the son of Ambrosia (Ruiz) and Charles Ross. A lifelong resident, he owned several small businesses, including the Palomino Bar, a garbage service, a bar in Why, and a laundromat in Ajo. He also worked for Phelps Dodge and as a janitor at the school. Services were held in Calvary Baptist Church; burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.

Loranza B. "Ranze" Farmer
Loranza B. "Ranze" Farmer, 87, died March 29. 2002, in Tucson. He was born April 28, 1914, in McCurtain, Oklahoma, to Valley Viola (Stewart) and Benjamin F. Farmer. He worked at many different jobs before coming to Ajo, arriving here first in 1932 and moving here permanently in 1950. He married Wanda Patterson on February 26, 1938, in Yuma. He worked for Phelps Dodge as a body and fender mechanic, retiring in 1978. He is survived by his wife, his children, and many other family members. Services were held in the Ajo Federated Church on April 5; burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.

Joe Gutierrez
Joe Gutierrez, 74, died March 25, 2002, at his home in Ajo. He was born March 5,1928, in Williams, the son of Porfirio & Nicolasa Garcia Gutierrez. He lived in Morenci for many years and was tire shop foreman when he retired in 1993. After his retirement, he made his home in Ajo with his niece Mary Helen Yanez and her family. He is survived by his sons and by many other family members. At Mr. Gutierrez' request, no services were held.

J. E. Wallace
J. E. Wallace, 76, of silver city, New Mexico, died Friday, March 22, 2002, in Gila Regional Medical Center. He was born May 13, 1925, in Wright City, Oklahoma, to Ed & Mattie Marie Casey Wallace. He married Helen Cobb in Shawnee, Oklahoma, on November 21, 1944. He was a locomotive engineer for Phelps dodge when he retired. He is survived by his wife, his daughters, and many other family members. Graveside services with full military honors were held March 27 at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery.

Edna Simpson
Edna Simpson, 86, died April 6, 2002, at her home in Ajo. She was born March 15, 1916, in Talbottom, Georgia, to Nancy Jane (Chapman) and Thomas Franklin Starling. She came to Ajo from Texas in 1932. In 1940 she married Glenn Simpson. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her sons, daughters, and other family members. Services were held in the LDS church on April 10.

James Ray Williams Sr.
James Ray Williams Sr., 85, died at his home in Ajo on April 5, 2002. He was born June 1, 1916, in Curtsville, West Virginia, to Ray & Hallie Williams. He married Catherine Treadway in West Virginia in 1937. He was a veteran of World War II. He first came to Ajo in 1950, moving here permanently in 1961. He was a master electrician when he retired from Phelps Dodge in 1982. He is survived by his wife, his sons and daughters, and by many other family members.

Cecil Vanpool
Cecil Vanpool, 76, died April 3, 2002, in Tucson. He was born March 19, 1926, in Twitty, Texas, to John Alexander and Nellie Mae Vanpool. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He lived in Ajo from 1950 until his retirement from Phelps dodge in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Myrtie Vanpool, by his son, and by many other family members. Memorial services were held in Oracle on April 10.

George L. Pohle
George L. Pohle, 72, died March 21, 2002, in Portland, Oregon. He was born January 31, 1930, in Lemay, Missouri. He was a Navy veteran. He was a lithographer. He and his wife lived in La Pine, Oregon, and spent winters in Ajo. Services were held in Oregon.

Salomon E. Ramirez
Salomon E. Ramirez, 66, died April 13, 2002, in Peoria. He was born November 30, 1935, in Clarkdale, to Carmen (Eredia) and Salomon L. Ramirez. He moved to Ajo from Clarkdale in 1950 and lived here the rest of his life. He married Cecilia Molina on August 22, 1959. He worked for Phelps Dodge for many years as an equipment operator in the smelter. He is survived by his wife, by his sons and daughters, and many other family members. Services were held in the Full Gospel Fellowship Church on April 18; burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.

Olive Jean Hammett-Morales
Olive Jean Hammett-Morales, 68, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Tucson. She was born April 8, 1933, in Pennsylvania to Zelda Mae (Bonzo) and William Kenneth Kelsey. She served in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict. She worked as a teacher and also as a licensed practical nurse. She and her first husband, John M. Hammett, raised a family together. After being widowed she married Larry Morales of Ajo. She is survived by her husband, by her son and daughter, and by many other family members. Services were held in New Mexico where she was buried next to her first husband in the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Mary Allison-Owens
Mary Allison-Owens, 48, died April 4, 2002, in Tucson. She was born July 8, 1953, in Theba, to Betty Marquez and Ambrose Manuel. She came to Ajo as a toddler and grew up here. She left Ajo in 1989 and was living in Tucson at the time of her death. She married James Owens in Tucson in 1994. She is survived by her husband, her sister, and her nieces and nephews. Services were held in the Douglass Funeral Home; burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.

Ofelia M. Robles
Ofelia M. Robles, 82, died in Phoenix on April 24, 2002. She was born in Caborca, Sonora, Mexico, on January 19, 1920, to Antonio and Manuela Miranda. She came to Ajo in 1952 and lived here the rest of her life. A homemaker, she also worked for Phelps Dodge at one time, serving as manager of the women's dormitory. She and her husband Arcadio Robles raised a large family together. She was preceded in death by her husband; she is survived by her sons and daughters and many other family members. Mass was celebrated in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church; burial was next to her husband in Ajo Cemetery.

John T. Jackson
John T. Jackson, 81, died August 24, 2001, in Casa Grande Regional Medical Center. He was born March 17, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, to Minnie (Dooley) & James Jackson. Mr. Jackson was an inspector of meat for the City of Chicago. He and his wife came to Arizona in 1980 and moved to Ajo in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Billie Jane Jackson of Ajo and by his children, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Services will be held on Wednesday, August 29, at 2 p.m. in Ajo Federated Church. The Rev. Roger Smith will officiate.

Gina L. Rodriquez
Gina L. Rodriquez, 55, died August 23, 2001, in University Medical Center in Tucson. She was born in Ajo on June 14, 1946, to Mary (Childs) & Eduardo Leon. She was a 1965 graduate of Ajo High School. Mrs. Rodriquez was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband Jack Rodriquez of Ajo and by her daughters and many other family members. Visitation was held Tuesday, August 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Douglass Funeral Home. The funeral will be conducted by Pastor Joe Kennedy of Moore, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, August 29, in the Ajo First Assembly of God Church. Burial will be at the Childs Ranch Cemetery.

Hortensia Dorame Porraz
Hortensia Dorame Porraz, 46, died on Tuesday, September 4, 2001, in Phoenix. She was born in Ajo on December 16, 1954, to Geneveva (Ortiz) & Jose Dorame. She grew up here and was graduated from Ajo High School in 1972. She was employed as a secretary/clerk by Good Samaritan Hospital. She is survived by her parents, Joe & Geneveva Dorame of Ajo, by her husband, Luis Porraz of Phoenix, and by her son and daughter and many other family members. Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Pertpetual Help in Glendale on Friday, September 7.

Verlin William Taylor
Verlin William Taylor, 75, died on Thursday, September 6, 2001, in Tucson. Mr. Taylor was born April 6, 1926, in Washington, Kansas, to Florence (Pierce) & Leo Taylor. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was self-employed, working in heavy construction. He is survived by his wife, Sharlene Taylor of Yarnell, by his children & step-children, and many other family members. Services were held Monday, September 10, in Full Gospel Fellowship Church with the Rev. Gary Stacy officiating. Burial will be in the Ajo Cemetery.

Patti O'Connor
Patti O'Connor, 58, of Tempe, died September 16, 2001, in Phoenix. she was born in Ajo on October 21, 1942, to Susie (Breen) and John O'Connor. She was a registered nurse. She is survived by her mother, brother, sons, and other family members. Mass was celebrated in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ajo on September 22.

Mable E. Newman
Mable E. Newman, 78, of Tucson, died September 10, 2001. she was born July 8, 1923, in Lipsey, Alabama. she and her husband, Y.Z. Newman, lived in Ajo from 1946 until his retirement in 1977. she is survived by her sons and other family members. Services were held September 15 at South Lawn Mortuary in Tucson.

Lawrence "Cotton" Owen
Lawrence "Cotton" Owen, 79, died September 18, 2001, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was born August 5, 1922, in Lena, Oklahoma, to William M. and Minnie Ethel (Rutherford) Owen. He was working for the Town of Weleetka in Oklahoma when he retired. His survivors include his wife, Francis own of Wetumka, Oklahoma, his children, and many other family members, including Wanema Webster of Ajo.

Michelle S. Santiago
Michelle S. Santiago, 38, died in Phoenix on August 20, 2002. She was born May 27, 1964, in San Jose, California, to Lilly and Dennis Stephens. She married Salvador O. Santiago in Maryland in 1990. She worked for American Express as a travel agent. She is survived by her husband and son and many other family members. Services were held in St. Simon and Jude Cathederal in Pheonix; burial was in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix.

Andrew H. Daniel
Andrew H. Daniel, 73, died at his home in Chandler on July 9, 2002. He was born in Ajo on December 30, 1928, the son of Maria (Hoge) and Lauriano Daniel. He served in the Army during the Korean War. In 1955 he married Helen Gonzales in Ajo. He worked for Phelps Dodge for 37 years. After he retired as a personnel clerk, he and his wife moved to Chandler. He is survived by his wife, his son and daughter, and other family members. Mass was celebrated on July 12 in St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Chandler.

Josefita S. Alvarez
Josefita S. Alvarez, 73, died July 12, 2002, in Stanton, California. She was born January 22, 1929, in Mexico to Pablo and Concepcion Sotelo. She came to Ajo in 1946 and married Alejandro Alvarez in 1950. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her son and other family members. Graveside services were conducted in the Ajo Cemetery by Father Issac on July 20.

Oran M. Campbell
Oran M. Campbell, 92, died June 29, 2002, in Tucson. He was born April 16, 1910, in Texas, to Anna (Selna) and Howard Campbell. He served in the Air Force during World War II. He married Aileen Walls in 1949 in California. After he retired from working as a pipefitter, he and his wife moved to Ajo from California in 1975. He was preceded in death by his wife. He is surived by his son and daughters and other family members. Private services were planned.

Luis C. Malvido
Luis C. Malvido, 87, died at his home in Ajo on July 5, 2002. He was born June 20, 1915, in Altar, Sonora, Mexico, to Jose and Maria (Calzada) Malvido. He married Francisca Tapia. They came to Ajo from Mexico in 1960. He was a contractor, building and repairing homes. He was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his sons and daughters and other family members. Services were held in Ajo Calvary Baptist Church; burial was in the Ajo Cemetery.

Charles William "Chuck" Rasmussen
Charles William "Chuck" Rasmussen, 88, died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Hot Shot Tank south of Ajo. He was born August 9, 1913, on his family's homestead near Tatum, New Mexico, to Beulah (Hodge) and George William Rasmussen. He came to Arizona in 1925. He married Ruth Irene Roberts in Phoenix on June 21, 1935. They moved to Ajo in 1941. Mr. Rasmussen was the Ajo Improvement Company manager for many years. He was also a rancher, a historian, and very active in community affairs. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son. He is survived by his son and daughters and many other family members. Services were held in the Ajo Federated Church with burial in the family plot in the Ajo Cemetery.
