Earnest W. Boyer
A memorial service with military honors for Earnest W. Boyer was conducted Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Faith Lutheran Church on E. Main Street, Safford.
Earnest Willard Boyer, 78, passed away Sept. 22, 2002, at the Tucson Medical Center. He was born Sept. 22, 1924, in Dickinson County, Iowa. Earnest was schooled in Iowa and raised in Jackson, Minn. His parents were Earnest W. and Ruth (Brown) Boyer. Earnest was an owner in the Friedley Tire and Brake shop. He served in the U.S. Navy and married Margaret Jean (Craig) on Jan. 17, 1953, in Williams, Minn.
Earnest is survived by his wife, Margaret, whose friends all call her Jean; daughters Barbara Jean Boles of Safford and Beverly Anne Boyer of Minnesota; a son, William Bruce Boyer of Minnesota; four grandchildren; brothers Lawrence Boyer of South Dakota, Keith Boyer of Minnesota and Lee Boyer of Iowa; sisters Bonnie Gill of Ohio, LaVonne Leek of Iowa, and Carol Oase and Ruth Conlin of Minnesota. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Russ and David; and also one sister, Donna.
Arrangements were entrusted to Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.

Phillip Jon Cain Jr.
Phillip Jon Cain Jr. passed away on November 21, 2002, at his home in Safford. Jonnie was born Dec. 7, 1957, in Corydon, Iowa. He was 44 years old. Jonnie moved to Thatcher when he was five years old. He graduated from Thatcher High School in 1976.
Jonnie had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed spelunking, fishing and camping. He loved doing little side jobs for people, especially helping to build houses and shops.
He is survived by one son, Jeremy Cain of Aztec, N.M.; his mother, Marilyn Stewart of Safford; his father, Phillip Jon Cain Sr. of Central; two sisters, Cheryl Valenzuela of Tucson and Beth Johnson of Mesa; one brother, Michael Cain of Omaha, Neb.; and his beloved Mickie Jennings.
Arrangements were entrusted to Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.

Annie Olsen
Funeral services for Annie Olsen, 96, of Safford were conducted Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at the Solomoville LDS Chapel with Bishop Chris Angle officiating. Interment followed in the Safford Cemetery.
Annie Elizabeth Olsen was born Jan. 6, 1907, in Thatcher to Abraham Bowman and Hildagarde Chlarson Bowman, the 8th of 10 children, nine of which preceded her in death. Annie was educated in the Thatcher schools and graduated from the Gila Academy. She met Howard Olsen while in school. Howard was a farmer and rancher, and after a whirlwind courtship that lasted four years, they were married on Sept. 17, 1927. Then on May 8,1965, they were married in the Mesa Temple.
Annie was an excellent seamstress. She started making her own clothes when she was just a teenager and continued to make her entire wardrobe, even her coats. Annie also made afghans for all her boys and their wives, then began making them for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Annie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Safford First Ward for many years. She served numerous callings in Primary and Relief Society.
Survivors include four children, Dale, Marvin, Randall and Steven Olsen. Annie was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Olsen, in 1987.
Arrangements were entrusted to Bunker's Caldwell Chapel.

Pila Bailon Gonzales
Pila Bailon Gonzales, 90, of Safford passed away April 10, 2003, at the Springdale Adult Home in Mesa. Pila was born on July 5, 1912, at Cliff, N.M. She moved to the Safford area over 60 years ago.
Pila is survived by one brother, Lewis Bailon of Stockton, Calif; and four sisters, Lucy Provencio of Mesa, Ventura Johnson of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Anna Saucedo of Clifton and Esther Florez of Clifton. Pila is also survived by her three sons, Joe B. Gonzales (Vera), Jim Mar (Karen), Felix Gonzales (Patsy); and one dauther, JoAnne Lopez (Ray). She was the grandmother "Nana" to 24 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Josefina Bailon; her son, Jim Gonzales; and her daughter, Teresita Gonzales. She was also preceded in death by her beloved grandchildren, Debra Gray, Andrea Gray and Jim Gonzales Jr.
During her adult life, Pila was a widow who worked in various restaurants in the community as she provided for her five children. When her children were grown, Pila was also a foster mother to several children for many years. Pila was an active member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus. She had a great love for her family and animals. She had a great talent for cooking and made delicious tamales, empanadas and enchiladas. Pila loved gardening and the outdoors.
Visitation was April 13 at Morris David's Safford Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at the Apostolic Church of Jesus on April 14. Reverend Andrew Madrid officiated and Pila's nephew, Bennie Provencio, was a guest speaker. A beautiful poem was written and read by her niece, Esther-Jo Ortega; life story was read by granddaughter Marti Romero, and songs were sung by the Safford Apostolic Praise Team. Her interment was at the Safford Cemetery following the services.
Pila's family would like to express great appreciation to all who expressed their love and compassion.

Roland Lee Quinn
Mr. Roland Lee Quinn died July 19, 2003 at his daughter's home in Gretna, La.
Mr. Quinn was retired from Phelps Dodge Corporation. He died of liver cancer and metastatic bone disease complicated by a hip fracture. He was 73 years old.
A native of California, he had made Arizona his home since 1962.
He was a deputy of the Ajo Police Department and served as an emergency medical technician. He was also a chief firearms safety instructor and served as an Airman First Class in the United States Air Force.
He is survived by two brothers, Donald and Alex "Red"; four daughters, Melanie Grace of Granger, Ind., Linda Jane of Luling, La., Carol Denise of Metairie, La. and Esther Christine of Gretna, La.; two step-daughters, Rae Etta And Rhonda of Gulfport, Miss.; five granddaughters, Jenny, Sarah, Tristan, Whitney and Lauren; and six step-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the Grace Tabernacle Church at 401 W. Relation in Safford on Aug. 7. A Phoenix graveside service is pending.

Beatriz V. Chavez
Beatriz V. Chavez, 100, of Safford passed away Sept. 24, 2003. Beatriz was born Sept. 10, 1903, in Clifton to Francisco and Teresa Billagran. She married Frank Chavez in 1923 in Clifton. Beatriz had great wisdom and compassion. Her first priority was God, then her family. Beatriz's favorite hobbies were reading, sewing, gardening and movies. She lived through two World Wars, the Great Depression of 1929 and the Cold War from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution through the age of modern technology.
She is survived by her son, Julio Coronado of San Diego, Calif.; and her daughter, Frances C. White of Safford; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Beatriz was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Chavez, and son, Manuel Gonzalez.
Visitation for Beatriz was Sept. 27 at the Morris Safford Funeral Home Chapel. Service was Sept. 28, also at the Morris Safford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at the Safford Union Cemetery.
Arrangements for services were under the direction of Morris Safford Funeral Home.

Tina Marie Gonzales
Tina Marie Gonzales, 30, of Thatcher entered eternal rest July 26, 2002. Tina was born Nov. 20, 1971, in Tucson to Cecil and Joan Gay. Tina was a kind and loving person. She loved to take part in her children's activities and especially enjoyed reading to them. She also enjoyed camping, gardening and painting.
Tina married her husband Anthony, July 6, 1992, at the Graham County Courthouse and they had three children. She was a member of The Church Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tina will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.
Surviving Tina is her husband Anthony P. Gonzales; sons Anthony M. Gonzales Jr. and Matthew J. Gonzales; daughter Marissa A. Gonzales, all of Thatcher; mother, Joan Gay of Thatcher; brothers, David P. Gay of Pima and Mark T. Gay of Thatcher; sisters Marlene Flowers of Safford and Michelle Krutsinger of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and grandfather, Kenneth Montague of Mesa. Visitation was Sunday, July 28, at the Morris David's Safford Funeral Home Chapel. Service was Monday, July 29, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church Street Chapel. Interment followed at the Thatcher Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Morris David's Safford Funeral Home.

Dallas Jean Moore
On Monday, April 7, 2003 the angels from above came down and took our little Dallas to be with the Lord. She died in a Las Vegas, Nevada, hospital at only 16 months old.
She was born Dec. 9, 2001, in Las Vegas.
She is survived by her mother and brother, Cathy and Riley Moore of Las Vegas and her father, Joshua Moore, of Safford; grandparents, Peter and Linda Moore of Safford, Lawrence Chavez of Los Lunas, N.M., Lorraines Fuentes of Las Vegas, and Richard Fuentes and Francis Fuentes of Albuquerque.
Services were held on April 11 at the American Burial and Cremation Services in Las Vegas. Burial was private.

Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee, 87, passed away October 9, 2002, in Tucson.
Robert was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Arbon, Idaho, to Emmett and Kathryn Stott Lee. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1933 and entered Washington State University as a pharmacy student in 1935.
He graduated from Washington State with a B.S. degree in Pharmacy in May of 1939. In 1939 Robert entered the military. He married Betty Jean Graham in April of 1940 and after he was released from the Air Force (World War II) he and Betty and his parents toured the entire United States in an Oldsmobile and a 26-foot trailer.
Robert and Betty had two sons, Bruce Graham Lee and David Wayne Lee.
After being recalled into the Air Force for the Korean Conflict and later being released, Robert moved to the Safford area and bought the Best Drug Store on Main Street. He owned this business from 1967 to 1975.
Robert was elected president of the Safford Graham County Chamber of Commerce in 1973; he also became president of the Arizona Pharmaceutical Assoc. in 1973.
In 1974 he was chairman of the Safford Centennial Celebration and completely supervised an 11-day celebration which the City of Safford held commemorating its 100th anniversary. In 1975 he was selected "Man of the Year" by Safford Graham County Chamber of Commerce.
While living in Safford Robert was a member of many local organizations, some of which included Graham County Library Board, Graham-Greenlee Health Planning Agency, Graham County Manpower Council, Charter Member-Graham County United Way, and Board Member of the Mount Graham Community Hospital.
Robert is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, Bruce (Mary Sue) and David (Mary); granddaughter, Katherine Martinez (Victor); great- grandsons, Emilio and Franki Martinez; sister, Virginia Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were Saturday, October 12, with visitation at 1 p.m. prior to service. Interment followed at Safford Union Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Morris David's Safford Funeral Home.
