Hester Lacy

1905 - 2000

Hester Lacy, of Willcox, died on March 3, 2000, at the age of 94. She was born in Texas on March 30, 1905.

Mrs. Lacy worked as a clerk for the Weather Bureau. She was a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

Mrs. Lacy was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in 1964.

She is survived by special friends, Dale and Olive Brown of St. David and Jeffrey Farmer of Willcox.

Services will be held today, March 8, 2000, at 10 a.m., at the St. David LDS Church with visitation at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery in Tucson.

Arrangements were handled by Richardson's Mortuary in Benson.

Thelma (Granny) Geer

Thelma (Granny) Geer, died on Oct. 2, 1999, at the age of 83. Thelma was born on March 12, 1916 in the Safford area.

Thelma served 45 years as a missionary. She also was the author of a popular book entitled "Mama & Me." Thelma married Ernest, her husband of 62 years, and worked with him on his small farm to support her missionary trips across the country and overseas.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Ernest; their daughter; grandchildren, Jonathon Wimberly and David Wimberly and Merrily Wimberly; and great-grandchildren, Daniel Wimberly-Smith and John Wimberly.

A graveside service was held at the Safford City Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends was held at the Cactus Flat home in Safford where "Granny" was born.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary.

Stephen "Sonny" Horyna Jr.


Stephen "Sonny" Horyna Jr., of Benson, died on Nov. 15, 1999 at his home, at the age of 61. Sonny was born on May 15, 1938, to Stephen Horyna Sr. and Mary Lena McGhee, in Kansas.

Sonny was a resident of the Benson area for more than 50 years. He previously lived in Kansas.

Sonny is survived by his mother, Mary Horyna of Benson; one brother, Ralph Horyna of California; two sisters, JoAnn Hubble of Eugene, Ore.; and Marilyn Winker of Benson; one nephew; three nieces, and two great nephews.

A graveside service was held on Nov. 18, 1999 at 5 p.m. at the Garden of Peace in the Cochise Gardens of Rest Cemetery. Cecil R. Richardson officiated the service.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Maria R. Flores


Maria R. Flores, of Cochise, died on Dec. 9, 1999 at her home in Richland Ranchettes, at the age of 52. She was born on Oct. 17, 1947 in Mexico to Salvador and Leonor (Ruiz) Flores.

Maria had been a resident of Richland Ranchettes since 1990 with prior residence in Gilroy, Calif. She worked as a nanny most of her life. She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Pearce-Sunsites.

Maria is survived by her daughters, Dolores Flores of Benson; and Amanda Martinez of Sierra Vista; sons, Gerardo Martinez of Sierra Vista; and Jaime Martinez of Cochise; her mother, Leonor Flores of Gilroy; five sisters; eight brothers; and grandchildren, Maricela Romero of Sierra Vista, Alexandra Hernandez of Benson; and Marcos Munro of Sierra Vista.

Rosary was held on De. 13, 1999 at 7 p.m. at St. Jude's Catholic Church with mass on Dec. 14, 1999 at 10 a.m. at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Pearce-Sunsites. Monsignor John Oliver officiated the services. Burial was at the Pearce Cemetery in Pearce.

Arrangements were made by Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary of Willcox.

William Harvey Plaetke


William Harvey Plaetke of Benson died Jan. 7, 2000 at the age of 51. William was born on Feb. 7, 1948 in San Francisco, Calif., to Harold and Evelyn Plaetke.

William was a laborer and worked in the VA Hospital. He also served two-tours in Vietnam in the US Army and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW.

William was survived by his father Harold G. Plaetke of Paso Robles, Calif.; one daughter Anne Marie Rogers of San Diego, Calif.; and one granddaughter.

Visitation was held on Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel in Benson. Services were held on Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel, with Ray Dover and Dale Martell, of LDS Church of Benson officiating.

Susan Ann Bell


Susan Ann Bell, of Benson, died on Man. 29, 2000, at Tucson Medical Center, at the age of 52. Susan was born on May 11, 1947, in Chicago, Ill.

Susan was a nurse at the Posada Del Sol Center. She lived in the Benson area for 14 years. She previously resided in Illinois.

Susan is survived by one son, Chuck Bell (serving in the military); three daughters, Janie Bell (also serving in the military); Amanda Bell of Benson and Christine "Tia" Bell of Benson; one brother, Mike Jalkut of Santa Cruz, Calif. and one grandson, Daniel C. Bell.

Services were held on Feb. 7, 2000, at 2 p.m., at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel in Benson. Cecil R. Richardson officiated the service. Interment was at the High Street Cemetery in Benson.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Jerry Carl Eismon


Jerry Carl Eismon, a lifetime resident of Arizona, died on Feb. 13, 2000, at his home in Benson, at the age of 56. Jerry was born in Bisbee on April 30, 1943.

He was a sixth grade teacher at Benson Middle School for the last year and had worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 27 years prior. He attended four years of college. He graduated with honors from University of Arizona Southern Campus at Sierra Vista. He was a member of The Boy Scouts of America for 10 years, Knights of Columbus, and also played guitar and sang with the Wild Willie Band years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Eismon of Benson; two sons, Jerry (Darla) Eismon of Sierra Vista; and Eddie Eismon of Benson; two daughters, Adelina (David) Weinberg of Sierra Vista; Almeda (Rob) Tynen of Copperus Cove, Texas; three brothers, Ed (Linda) Eismon; George (Kay) Eismon; and Willie Eismon all of Benson; two sisters, Rosie (John) Sunday of Everett, Wash., and Stella (Carlos) Vallejo of St. David; and seven grandchildren.

Services are were held at the Holy Trinity Monastery, in St. David, on Feb. 18, 2000. Rosary was also held at 10 a.m., with Father Louis Hasenfuss officiating. Burial is to be held at a later date.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary.

Father Louis B. Hasenfuss

1931- 2000

Father Louis B. Hasenfuss of St. David died on Feb. 28, 2000, at the age of 68. He was born in Dedham, Mass., on Nov. 29, 1931, to Peter and Mary Hasenfuss.

Father Hasenfuss lived in Arizona for 25 years and was a Catholic Priest of the Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David, with an eight year college education.

Father Hasenfuss is survived by two brothers, Paul Hasenfuss of Dorchester, Mass; Robert Hanenfuss of Canton, Mass; one sister, Mary Lou Nickerson of Dedham, Mass.

A funeral service was held on March 1, 2000, at the Holy Trinity Monastery, at 12 p.m. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Monastery Cemetery. Casketbearers were monks of Holy Trinity Monastery.

Mamie Ann Baker


Mamie Ann Baker, of Benson, died on Nov. 17, 1999 at the age of 79. Mamie was born on Nov. 2, 1920 in Birdseye, Ind.

Mamie was a homemaker. She resided in the Benson area for 36 years. Mamie previously lived in Indiana.

Mamie was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Ann Romero.

Mamie is survived by her husband, Sammy Baker of Tucson; two sons, Bob (Mary) King of Huachuca City; and Ronnie King of Benson; two daughters, Donna (Bill) Glass of Tucson; and Sandra (Pappy) Fiscus of Benson; daughter-in-law, Bea King of Huachuca City; one sister, Rosa Collier of New Albany, Ind.; ten grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Nov. 22, 1999 at 7 p.m. at Richardson's Chapel in Benson. Rev. Bob McSpadden of Tucson officiated the service.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Windol Wylie

1920 - 2000

Windol Wylie, of Benson, died on March 3, 2000, at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, at the age of 79. He was born in Mexia, Texas on Dec. 6, 1920.

Mr. Wylie lived in Arizona for 13 years. He was a retired aircraft mechanic for 25 years with a two year college education. He was also in the U. S. Air Force.

Mr. Wylie is survived by his wife, Twila Wylie of Benson; four daughters, Irbie Jean Wylie of Anchorage, Alaska; Sondra Sue Stansel of Bartow, Fla; Frances Marie Leopold of Mobile, Ala.; Linda Diane Wylie of Benson; two brothers, William Wylie and Leroy Wylie, both of Arlington, Texas; one sister, Frances Wheeler of Bartow, Fla.; four granddaughters, Ann, Rose, Christian, Brandi; and one grandson, Jerome.

A funeral service was held on March 6, 2000, at 3 p.m., at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Tony Jondrow officiated the service.

Arrangements were handled by Richardson's Mortuary Chapel in Benson.

Jose Angel Menchaca


Jose Angel Menchaca, part-time Benson resident, died on Feb. 12, 2000, at the Christian Health Care Center, in Lynden, Wash., at the age of 68. Jose was born on April 4, 1931, to Denis and Maria (Rodriguez) Menchaca, in Crystal City, Texas.

Jose grew up in Texas and Mexico. He also served in the U.S. Army. In 1960, he came to Whatcom County, Wash., and was first employed as a driver for the Bellingham Senior Community Center, then for Lynden and Ferndale, and also in Benson, where he wintered for many years.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jesus Menchaca.

Jose is survived by his companion, Maria Salazar; daughters, Hope O'Neill of Teterboro, N.J.; Cecilia Partlow of Kent, Wash.; Julie Milstead of Bellingham, Wash.; Gema Kelton of Ferndale, Wash.; Rose Zettle of Bremerton, Wash.; sons, Mike Menchaca of Home, Wash.; Denis Menchaca of Inglewood, Colo.; Ernie, Hec and Gabe Menchaca all of Lynden, Wash.; Gilbert Menchaca of Nooksack, Wash.; Joey Cevallos of Lynden, Wash.; brother, Oscar Menchaca of San Jose, Calif.; sisters Erlinda Rodriguez and Lupe Pena both of San Jose, Calif.; Maria Garcia and Lourdes Valadez, both of Bellingham, Wash.; and Teresa Fernandez of San Antonio, Texas; 35 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lynden, Wash. Fr. Woody McCallister officiated the service. Burial followed in the Woodlawn Cemetery, near Ferndale, Wash.

Arrangements were made by Gillies Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Lynden, Wash.

Virginia Gynger' Beth Weathers


Virginia "Gynger" Beth Weathers, of Benson, died on Feb. 4, 2000.

Services will be at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel today, Feb. 9, 2000, at 10 a.m.

Peter C. Hernandez


Peter C. Hernandez, who was born in Benson in 1913, died in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 30, 2000. He would have been 87 years old on March 20.

Mr. Hernandez was the oldest of 15 children born to pioneer Benson residents, Ambrosio and Maria Hernandez. He attended school in Benson and played semi-professional baseball in both Arizona and Mexico before moving to California in the early 1930s to begin a 40-year career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He also served in the United States Army during World War II.

Mr. Hernandez was preceded in death by his wife, Antoineta Palido, whom he married in El Paso, Texas in 1942, Mrs. Hernandez died in 1991.

He is survived by two children, Jaime T. Hernandez, a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney, and Judithe Neikrug, of Chicago, a college administrator; and two grandchildren.

Eight siblings also survive. They are brothers, Elias of Benson and Elpidio of Tucson; Baudelio of Oceanside, Calif.; and sisters, Soledad Gonzales of Gila Bend; Onesima Elias of Rio Rancho, N.M.; Rosa Hernandez of Porterville, Calif., and Lydia Mendoza of Willcox.

Funeral services for Mr. Hernandez were held in Alhambra, Calif., on Feb. 4, 2000. He was buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Monterey Park, Calif.
