Charlotte M. Hodges


Charlotte M. Hodges, of Tucson, died on Jan. 14, 2000, at the Mountain View Nursing Home, in Tucson, at the age of 78. Charlotte was born on Dec. 24, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., to William and Charlotte (Gueppner) Johnson.

Charlotte was a homemaker. She was a 50 year Arizona resident. She was also a high school graduate.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her daughter, Candy Tibbits in 1992.

Charlotte is survived by two sons, Richard Wyman of Tucson; and Charles Keen of Tucson; five daughters, Joan Holloway of Casa Grande; Catherine Lerew of Tucson; Florance Nava of Tucson; Charlene Brumbaugh of Florida; and Cheryl Phillips of Tucson; one brother, Norman Johnson of Illinois; three sisters, Betty Jane Michaels of Florida; Audrey Riegle of Illinois; Ardith Joy Hunt of Illinois; also 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held today, Jan. 19, 2000, at the Cochise Gardens of Rest Urn Garden, in Benson, at 3 p.m. Pastor Lupe Diaz of the Grace Chapel, in Benson, will be officiating.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Richard "Dick" Baughn


Richard "Dick" Baughn, of Mescal, died on Jan. 18, 2000, at home in Mescal, at the age of 64. Dick was born on June 19, 1935, in Tacoma, Wash.

Dick owned the DLH Self Storage in Mescal. He was a four-year resident of the Mescal area. He previously lived in Washington. He was also a life member of the VFW of Tenino, Wash. and a lifetime NRA member.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marjorie Baughn of Mescal; daughters, Tammy Baughn of Mescal; and Tina (Paul) Gendron of Michigan; sister, Dorothy Pardue of Washington; and also three grand-dogs.

Services were held on Jan. 21, at 1 p.m., at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel, in Benson. The VFW officiated the services. Interment will be at a later date in Lakewood, Wash.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Timothy J. Davis


Timothy J. Davis, of Benson, died on Nov. 28, 1999, at the age of 25. Timothy was born on Jan. 15, 1974, in Travis County, Tex., to Alvin and Alice Davis.

Timothy was a resident of the Benson area for a year and a half. He previously lived in

Corpus Christi, Tex. He worked as a dishwasher/cook at Denny's in Benson. Timothy also served in the U.S. Army for four years.

Timothy is survived by his mother, Alice Davis of Corpus Christi, Tex.; twin sister, Missy; sister Cinthia both of Corpus Christi, Tex.; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends from Denny's restaurant in Benson.

A service was held on Dec. 4, 1999 at 10 a.m. at the Memory Gardens in Corpus Christi, Tex.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

Avaline A. Chamberlain


Avaline A. Chamberlain, of Benson, died on Feb. 8, 2000, in Benson, at the age of 79. Avaline was born on Nov. 14, 1920, in Passamonte, N.M., to Edward C. and Arimatheu (Gribble) Darden.

Avaline was a home maker, a great cook and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed country life, gardening, raising pigs and all kinds of poultry.

Avaline is survived by two sons, Jesse Lee (Carol) Jarred of Benson; and Theodore F. (June) Jarred of Mississippi; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Viewing was held on Feb. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Benson. Funeral services began at 11 a.m. at the church with Dr. A B Blair as officiant. Interment was at the Cochise Gardens in Benson. Casket bearers were Tom Weppler, Larry Van Dongen, David Fells, Don Bailey, Mike Smith and James Jarred.

Arrangements were made by San Pedro Funeral Home of St. David.

Frank Reyes


Frank Reyes, of Benson, died on Jan. 10, 2000, at the age of 67. Frank was born on March 9, 1932, in Benson.

Frank was a pipe fitter at Apache Nitrogen Products. He was a member of the VFW and he also served two years in Korea in the US Army.

He is survived by sister, Chona Reyes of Benson; one aunt, Lupe Reyes of Benson; nephew, David (Tina) Reyes of Edina, Minn.; three neices, Judy Cope of Benson; Lena Reyes of California; and Yvonne Yetta of Missouri; three uncles, Ignacio (Madeline) Reyes of Benson; and Simon (Maria) Reyes of Benson; and Louis (Rosalia) Reyes of Benson; several cousins and 2 grandchildren Sophia and Natasha Reyes of Minnesota.

Visitation was held on Jan. 13, at Richardson's Mortuary Chapel, in Benson. Services were held on Jan. 14, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson. Father Ray Ratzenberger officiated the service.

Casket bearers were George Reyes, Manuel Reyes, Alfred Reyes, Aaron Reyes, Vicente Reyes and Francisco Reyes. Honorary casket bearers were Roland Reyes and Manuel Padia.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary in Benson.

John Wade Hampton


John "Johnny" Wade Hampton, a well-known Cowboy Artist of Sonoita, died Dec. 2, 1999, at the age of 81.

Three hundred cowboys and friends came to Sonoita on Dec. 12, 1999,for a celebration of his life the life of one of America's most beloved cowboy artist, one of the founders of Cowboy Artists of America, today the benchmark of artistic excellence in western art.

He is survived by his wife Cheraux; son, Wade James Hampton and daughter-in-law, Dr. Anne Marie Hampton, PhD.; sister, Lucille C. Hampton; granddaughter, Nikol Colleen Hampton and her husband, Chris Alan Liby.

Johnny was an internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor, whose work was recognized as "authentic cowboy" in a part of the Old West. One of his notable works was "Turning the Leader," an heroic bronze statue which has graced the entranceway of El Choro Lodge in Paradise Valley. The statue has been moved to his home in Sonoita to serve as his gravesite monument.

His casket was branded by cowboys attending, and services included a mounted-up ride-by with Hampton's horse and empty saddle led by Joe Beeler, his lifelong friend and co-founder of CAA.

Also participating were The Ninth Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers Honor Guard, Arizona Rangers, Comanche Warrior, Kenny Yackintooniapah, who performed a burial ceremony. VFW bagpipes and a three volley rifle salute preceded Taps, benediction and interment.

A cowboy poem, "Heroes" by Don Hedgepath, completed the tribute to John Hampton, an American artist widely-known throughout Arizona and loved by his many friends.

Melvin French


Melvin French, of Benson, died on Dec. 9, 1999, at the age of 87. Melvin was born on June 7, 1912 in Elks Point, S.D.

Melvin worked as a heavy equipment operator for the highway department. He served in the U.S. Navy (SEA'S BEE'S) in W.W. II. Melvin was also a member of Operator Eng. Local #302 in Seattle, Wash. He was a resident of the Benson area for 12 years and a Arizona resident for 26 years. He previously lived in Tucson and Seattle, Wash.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Bettie French of Benson; three sons, Loren French of Marysville, Wash.; Roger French of Arlington, Wash.; and Jim Givens of Bellingham, Wash.; four daughters, Mary Christoferson of Arlington, Wash.; Darlene Champers of Marysville, Wash.; Viki Skorka of Stanwood, Wash.; and Lois Tucker of Warsaw, Ind.; four sisters, Nellie Harbeck of Sun City; Geneva White of Gigharbor, Wash.; Florence Whitney of Marysville, Wash.; and Roberta Menzies of Lake Stevens, Wash.; three grandchildren, Joe Wright of Granite Falls, Wash.; David Wright of Lake Stevens, Wash.; and Lindsey Christoferson of Arlington Wash.; and one great-grandchild, Madison Christoferson of Arlington, Wash.

No services were held.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary of Benson.

James Robert L'Homme


James Robert L'Homme, of Benson, died on Nov. 16, 1999, in Tucson. James was born on July 17, 1992, in Ft. Huachuca, his foster parents are Phyllis and the late Tom Passons.

James was a first grade student in Benson. He was a resident of Arizona all his life. James was a member of the Catholic church.

James was preceded in death by his foster father, Tom Passons.

James is survived by his foster mother Phyllis Passons of Benson; foster brother, Omar Passons; three foster sisters, Miesha Passons, Leona Smolinski, and Mellissa Long; grandparents, Kay and Al L'Homme; great-grandmother, Lillian Clifford; Paula Rasch, Support Coordinator; Tadre Staff; Dr. Burris Duncan and many supportive staff and friends.

A mass was held in his name on Nov. 19 at 12 noon at the Holy Trinity Monastery in St. David. A service officiated by Father Alcuin was also on Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. also at the Holy Trinity Monastery. Deposition was at the High Street Cemetery in Benson.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Mortuary in Benson.

Ora Mae Hestand

Ora Mae Hestand, of Willcox, died on Oct. 5, 1999, at the age of 77. Ora Mae was born on April 12, 1922, to Claud B. Ferguson and Hetty Lee Peevey, in Spiro, Okla.

Ora Mae worked as a clerk for Farmer Home Administration before and after WW II. Ora Mae also served in the U.S. Navy in WW II and was a member of the U.S. Navy Waves. She married Frank Hestand on Feb. 15, 194,7 in Deming, N.M. Ora Mae resided in the Willcox area since 1952, and she previously lived in New Mexico. Ora Mae was a member of the Willcox United Methodist Church.

Ora Mae was preceded in death by her brother, Hubert Ferguson.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Hestand of Willcox; son, Carl (Pam) Hestand of Willcox; sister, Edith Benton of El Paso, Tex.; brother, Ernest Ferguson of Salinas, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Amber and Nicole.

A funeral service was held on Oct. 8, 1999, at 10 a.m. at the Willcox United Methodist Church. Rev. Lyndon Mason officiated the service. Burial was held at the Sunset Cemetery in Willcox. Pallbearers were Bill Gaskill, Rick Diggs, Toby Helton, Tim Benedum, Bill Montano and Mike Fortenberry. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Association Southern AZ Chapter at 5132 E. Pima St.; Tucson, AZ 85712.

Arrangements were made by Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.

John Wesley Schultz

1990 - 2000

John Wesley Schultz of St. David, died on Feb. 27, 2000, at the age of 9. He was born in Farmville, Va., on Sept. 3, 1990, to the late Carl and Annette Schultz.

John Schultz was a fourth grade student in Mrs. Louise Larson's class at St. David Elementary School and a member of the St David Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He loved animals, football, soccer and playing with his friends and brothers. He also like roping, riding horses, and horseshoeing.

He is preceded in death by his father, Carl in 1995.

John is survived by his mother, Annette Schultz of St. David; three brothers, Joshua; William and Carl, Jr. all of St. David; Grandmother Carol (Robert) Barney of St. David; and Grandfather Tom (Michele) Daniels of Otic, Ore; Dora L. Schultz of Pittston, Pa.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. His best friends were Zack Goodman and Tony Gray.

Services were held on March 3, 2000, at the LDS Church in St. David, at 2 p.m. Bishop Wayne Merrill, of the St. David Ward, officiated the service. Interment was at the St. David Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Richardson's Mortuary Chapel in Benson.

Rosetta E. Leach


Rosetta E. Leach, a 22-year resident of Benson, died at home on Feb. 20, 2000. She was born April 5, 1925, in Somerset County, Pa., to Harry and Rose Mort.

Rosetta was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Rosetta was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Leach in 1988; son, William Paugh; and brother Marlyn Mort.

She is survived by her sons, Dale Mort (Carol) of Dallas, Texas; Ricky Paugh (Christine) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Rodney Paugh of Chicago, Ill.; daughters, Linda McKelvey (Larry) of Stoyatown, Pa.; and Dorothy McCune (Larry) of Benson; numerous grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Rosary and visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Thursday, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., with Fr. Ray Ratzenberger officiating. Interment will follow at the Post Cemetery, Fort Huachuca.

Arrangements were made by Jensen's Sierra Vista Mortuary LLC.

Jose M. Gil


Jose M. Gil, of Benson, died on Dec. 11, 1999, at the age of 70. Jose was born on Dec. 24, 1928, to Jose Gil and Beatrice Morales, in Huachinera, Sonora, Mexico.

Jose was a landscaper in the Benson area and a farm laborer in the Douglas area. Jose was a 17 year resident of the Benson area and had resided in Arizona for 29 years. He previously lived in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. Jose was also a member of Our Lady of Loudes Catholic Church of Benson.

Jose is survived by his wife, Crispina of Benson; two sons, Juan and Oscar of Benson; three daughters, Beatrice Gil of Benson; Paz Gil of Tucson; and Sandra (Blas) Ronquillo of Tucson; brother, Manuel of Huachinera, Sonora, Mexico; sister, Maria Ester "Chata" Hernandez of Huachinera, Sonora, Mexico; also 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rosary was held on Dec. 13, 1999 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Richardson's Mortuary. Funeral services were held on Dec. 14, 1999 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Benson. Burial was at High Street Cemetery. Casket bearers were Juan Gil, Joey Garcia, Oscar Gil, Jose Fimbres, Blas Ronquillo and Manuel Gil.

Arrangements were made by Richardson's Remembrance Center of Benson.
