Everett I. Balkenbush


Everett I. Balkenbush, of Willcox, died on July 27, 2000, at his home, at the age of 86. Mr. Balkenbush was born in Hillrose, Colo., on March 28, 1914, to Joseph J. and Annie (Boillot) Balkenbush.

He came to Willcox in 1976 and was a farmer. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post #100 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his sister, Helen (Al) Bret of Tucson; a niece and four nephews.

Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with viewing at Westlawn Chapel onehour prior to the funeral service. Burial will take place at Sunset Cemetery in Willcox. Services are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox.

James Eugene Hubbard

CMSGT James Eugene Hubbard, USAF (Ret.), died at home on Jan. 24, 2002.

He was born Aug. 22, 1935, in Fredrick, Kan., to Edith and Orlin Hubbard.

Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Evelyn; daughters, Vicki Renoux and Valeri (Troy) Morse; grandchildren, Brandin, Ronnie, K.C., Brittani, Kristofer and Jonathan; sister, Beaulah Cox; and brother, Galyn (Etheline) Hubbard. He was preceded in death by brothers, Ben and Clyde.

Chief Hubbard spent 27-1/2 years in the USAF, serving in Omaha, Neb., Edwards Air Force Base and Sacramento, Calif.; Myrtle Beach and Sumter, N.C.; Sheyma, Alaska; Hawaii; Vietnam; Tucson; Spain; Chateauroux, France.

He was commander of a Loran D Site in Munich, Germany. He was also a paratrooper and a private pilot.

After retirement, he became a Certified Financial Planner, worked at Fred Enke Golf Course, owned his own fiberglass business and his own carpet business.

He was also a Realtor with P.K. Realty in Mescal.

Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.

A special man, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Frances G. Kopp

Frances G. Kopp, 90, of Benson, died Jan. 23, 2002, in Benson. She lived in the area four years, coming from Hayward, Calif.

She was born Jan. 28, 1911, in Grand Haven, Mich., to George and Petranella Speelman Conant.

She was a homemaker; a member of Escapee RV Club; and a member of Moose and Elks in Michigan.

No services. A private cremation was held.

Survivors include one son, Carl (Elaine) Hovey of Carson City, Nev.; one daughter, Patricia (Ted) Horat of Benson; stepdaughter Alma Gordon of Muskegon, Mich.; two foster daughters, Sue (Tom) Eckert of Pinole, Calif., and Donna (Gus) Gurnzyski of Muskegon, Mich.; one brother, George (Doris) Conant of Clinton Township, Mich.; four sisters, Doreen (Basil) Corbett of Hemit, Calif., Thelma Hockwater, Nancy (Dick) Fuller, and Wilma Kieft, all of Grand Haven, Mich.; sister-in-law Eilene Conant also of Grand Haven; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

William "Bill" A. Seeley

William "Bill" A. Seeley, 62, a resident of Newark, Calif. for 32 years, died at his home Jan. 6, 2002.

Bill was born in Douglas, Ariz. on Oct. 25, 1939. He was an electronics engineer at Tyco Electronics. Bill was an avid photographer and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Preceded in death by his sister Sally and father Art Seeley, he is survived by his mother, Sarah Thompson; sisters, Estelle Grieve and Christine Jackson of Benson; four nieces; and his two furry friends, Blackie and Goldie, who now reside in Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mary Jo Woodard

April 5, 2002

Mary Jo Franklin Woodard, known to her friends as "Jo," passed away April 5, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bill Woodard; her daughters, Leslie Garrobo and Liz Mick; four grandchildren, Alexis and Michaela Garrobo, Russell and Bradley Mick; two sisters, Jackie Naegle of Benson, and Pat Perry.

In her life she was devoted to teaching and learning. She taught in Washington Elementary School district for more than 20 years, having previously resided in Benson.

Wayne West Castagno

Wayne West Castagno, 68, a five-year resident of Mescal/Benson, died June 27, 2002, in Tucson. He previously lived in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was born June 30, 1933, in Salt Lake City, to Pierre and Virginia Taylor Castagno.

Wayne Served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force in Vietnam; was a member of the VFW and Sergeant's Association in Salt Lake City; and a member of AARP. He worked as an aircraft mechanic with the Civil Service.

Wayne had special affection for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved hunting, fishing and outdoor activities. He was an avid viewer of the History channel, especially military history.

A memorial service will be held July 3, at Faith Baptist Church in Huachuca City, with Rev. Dixie Fields officiating. Contact mortuary for time.

A private cremation was held.

Survivors include wife, Mildred Castagno of Mescal/Benson; four sons, Wayne W. Jr. (Dee) Castagno of Naples, Fla., Edward J. (Annette) Castagno of Salt Lake City, Michael R. (Carol) Castagno also of Salt Lake City, and Steven C. Castagno of Gig Harbor, Wash.; two brothers, Jay (Betty) Castagno of Mescal/Benson, and John W. (Maryann) Castagno of Salt Lake City; two half-sisters, Linda (Darrell) Rainey of Tooele, Utah and Roseann McPhaul of LaMesa, Calif.; two half-brothers, Pete (Judy) Castagno of Vernon, Utah, and David (Marilyn) Castagno of Stansberry, Utah; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and nephew, Ross Castagno of Las Vegas, Nev.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Robert A. York

1919 - 2002

Robert A. York of Benson died on Oct. 27, 2002 in Benson.

He was born in E. St. Louis, Ill. on Sept. 14, 1919.

Robert lived in Benson for the past 17 years, previously residing in Illinois.

Robert worked as a truck driver.

Services are pending. A private cremation was held.

No survivors.

Maxine Mericantante

1919 - 2002

Mrs. Maxine Mericantante passed away on Christmas Eve, after a long illness.

She was 83 and was preceded in death by her son Thomas L. Mericantante in South Vietnam.

She is survived by her son Jan M. Tyler of Watauga, Tenn., three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

William (Bill) Harris

1916 - 2003

William (Bill) Harris, 87, died May 22, 2003. He was born March 10, 1916, in Waxahachie, Texas, to George W. Harris and Mary Sally Rogers.

The family moved to Oklahoma, where Bill met Lola Irene Goodgion, had one date, then Bill joined the U.S. Army. While in boot camp, Bill called Lola and later married for 59 years, until her death on March 26, 2002. Bill and Lola lived in Arizona 50 years.

Bill is survived by niece Mary Swan-May and nephew Kennith May and a host of nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Cochise Gardens of Rest, next to wife, Lola.

James Franklin Tucker

1916 - 2003

James Franklin Tucker, 86, of St. David, died June 10, 2003, in Tucson. He lived in the area 21 years, previously residing in Glendale.

He was born June 28, 1916, in Clinton, Ill., to James Monroe and Effie Allison Tucker.

James worked as a manager in auto repair/radiator. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, American Legion/Tombstone (46 years in the Legion), VFW/Benson, member 40 & 8 group.

Interment was at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista.

James was preceded in death by daughter Sandra. Survivors include his wife, Kathleena A. Tucker of St. David; daughter, Barbara Jean (Warren) Stafford of Coos Bay, Ore.; brother, Charles William (Patty) Tucker of Modesto, Calif.; Sister, Joan Bieber of Nashville, Tenn.; and 4 grandchildren.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Donald Wayne Crump

1926 - 2003

Donald Wayne Crump, 76, of Tucson and a Benson resident from 1970 to 1989, died June 29, 2003, in Tucson.

He was born Dec. 2, 1926, in Gideon, Mo., to Elwood and Goldie Crump.

He was a member of United Church of God.

Services were held July 2, at Richardson's Benson Mortuary, officiated by minister Steve Buchanan.

Casket bearers were grandsons Travis, Steven, Waylon, Dennis, Gregg and Steven Buchanan.

Survivors include three sons, Don of Malden, Mo., Bill of Sierra Vista and Dennis of St. David; two daughters, Norma of Benson and Linda of Glendale; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brothers Harold and Eugene; and sisters Loveda, Wilma and Gladys.

Allen Paul McCormack

Allen Paul McCormack, 26, of Mescal/Benson, died June 26, 2002, in Benson. He lived in the area 15 months, coming from Cottonwood.

He was born Jan. 21, 1976, in Bakersfield, Calif., to Richard and Brenda Watson McCormack.

Allen was a member of First Baptist Church in Benson.

He worked as a cashier.

Services will be held July 3, at the Camp Verde LDS Church, with Bishop Derrin Prince officiating. A private cremation was held.

Allen was preceded in death by mother, Brenda, August 1998. Survivors include wife, Tammy McCormack and son, Andrew McCormack, both of Benson; parents, Richard (Zelda) McCormack of Camp Verde; grandmother, paternal grandmother Helen Chase of Cottonwood; three brothers, Richard (Gloria) McCormack of Hesperia, Calif., and Scott Secor and George Secor, both of Fountain Valley, Calif.; one sister, Tina McCormack of Pasadena, Calif.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Delia Ortiz Hoyte

1968 - 2002

Delia Ortiz Hoyte, 34, of Southworth, Wash., died Dec. 23, 2002.

She was born Nov. 12, 1968, in Big Springs, Texas, to Jesse and Lupe Garcia Ortiz.

Delia attended four years of college and was a Spanish teacher.

Services are pending.

She is survived by husband, Thane S. Hoyte; daughter, Dianna Marie Barraza, both of Southworth, Wash.; parents, Jesse and Lupe Ortiz of Big Springs, Texas; sister, Dianna Valdez, also of Big Springs, Texas.
