Leland Earl Edsall

1913 - 2003

Leland Earl Edsall, 89 years old, of Bisbee, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his home. He was born July 10, 1913, in Hilyard Township, Ill.

He married Ida Mae Dunham Aug. 4, 1934. They were married 66 years. She preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 2000. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Elizabeth; parents, Harry and Alice (Edwards) Edsall; two infant brothers; brother Richard Edsall; two sisters, Cleda Ellis and Helen Weigand.

Survived by six sons, Harry (Rose) of Benson, Kenneth (Darlene) of Montana, Walter of Bisbee, Jim (Shirley) of Texas, Donald (Myrna) of Bisbee, David (Valerie) of Surprise; daughter Audrey (Franklin) Haubert of Bisbee; 28 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; brother John Edsall of Illinois; sisters-in-law, Nelda Edsall and Wilma Brown of Illinois and Esther Franklin of Washington.

His life's work included farming, farm machinery mechanic and underground mining. After retiring from Phelps-Dodge Corp. in 1975, he became a backyard mechanic for many friends and relatives. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church. Leland enjoyed cooking, watching birds, working in his yard and watching baseball on TV.

Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Bisbee Funeral Home, 1094 Hwy. 92 in Bisbee. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Thursday, April 10, at the First Southern Baptist Church, 500 Arizona Street, (Warren), Bisbee. Interment will be at Eastlawn-Palms Cemetery in Tucson. Rev. Keith Kersey of Benson and Rev. Phillip Dunham, a nephew, will be officiating clergy.

The family suggests contributions/donations be made to Catholic Community Services, 17 Howell Ave., Bisbee, or Hospice Care, 300 El Camino Real, Sierra Vista.

Wilbur Wayne White

1916 - 2003

Wilbur Wayne White passed away on May 24, 2003, at age 86. He was born in Dos Cabezas, Ariz. on Nov. 28, 1916. He is survived by four children, Philip (Charline) White of St. David, Wayne White of Willcox, Sharon (Gary) Whitehead of St. David, Laura (Curtis) Dupee of St. David and six grandchildren; brothers Charles (Martha) White and Donald White, both of St. David; sister Doris (Leslie) Alberding of St. David and sister Dorothy Simmons of Tucson.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Thelma (Miller) White and Marilyn (Jones Phillipi) White; a grandson, Mica White; brothers Raymond Kenney and Henry White, and sisters Nelle Ingalsbe and Edith Leggett.

Wilbur joined the U.S. Army in 1941, and married Thelma Miller in 1943, prior to serving in Europe during World War II. He left the Army as a first lieutenant in 1945 and settled in St. David. He worked at Apache Powder Company from 1948 to 1968. He then worked in the Civil Service at Ft. Huachuca until his retirement in 1978. After Thelma's passing he married Marilyn Phillipi in 1990.

Throughout his life and well into "retirement" he was a beekeeper and was well known for his excellent honey.

A memorial and life celebration was held at the home of Phil White on May 31. There will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.

Beatrice Gail Lotz Wilson

1928 - 2003

Beatrice Gail Lotz Wilson, 75, a 52-year resident of Benson, died June 9, 2003, in Benson. She previously lived in El Paso, Texas. She was born April 4, 1928, in Summerville, S.C., to Martin M. and Erimin Myers Lotz.

She was a graduate of Winthrop College in Rockhill, S.C., and received a master's degree from the University of Arizona. Beatrice was an English teacher at Benson Union High School for more than 20 years.

She was married to husband, Tom, for 53 years and known to friends as Trixie. She will be forever remembered for her loving ways and her dedication to her family. Her wit and sense of humor brought much joy to all. She will live in the hearts of all of the many lives she touched.

She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Benson, where services were held Friday, June 13, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dale Moe officiating. Interment was at Cochise Garden of Rest, Benson.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Wilson Sr., of Benson; son Tom Wilson Jr. and wife, Maureen, (grandchildren, Tommy, Katie and Jenny) of Avondale; daughters, Gail Adams and husband, Keith, (grandchildren, Katie and Amy) of Casa Grande and Melissa Elias and husband, Ron, (granddaughter Jessie) of Tucson; one great-grandson, Jacob; and five sisters.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Dorothy "Mignon" Elliott

1923 - 2003

Dorothy "Mignon" Elliott, longtime resident of Cascabel, was born May 20, 1923. She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and died June 17, 2003, in Benson, Ariz.

Some of her early years were spent in Salt Valley, Utah and the island of Aruba, where her father was employed by Standard Oil Company. Though her family moved frequently, she received most of her education in Long Beach, Encinitas and Berkeley, Calif.

At Long Beach City College, she majored in secretarial skills and excelled in the sport of fencing. Majoring in dietetics, she also received an Associate of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

During the WWII years, she was employed as a secretary at Douglas Aircraft and later at North American Aircraft in Long Beach.

Mignon married Harold Elliott in 1947. They had three daughters, one of whom died at age three.

Mignon periodically did secretary work and was employed by "Kelly Girls," a secretarial pool company. She also, at this time, took an advanced secretarial course to sharpen her skills.

After the children were grown and moved out, she took several adult education courses at nearby community colleges.

She and her husband moved to Sahuarita, Ariz., in 1975, where she worked as a teacher's aid at the Sahuarita Elementary School until failing health forced her to retire. Mignon and her husband, Harold, retired in 1982 and moved to Cascabel, their present home.

Mignon was very interested in environmental issues. She was on the advisory board for the Redington Natural Resource Conservation District and helped with local conservation projects.

Later, her interest in archaeology helped bring about the establishment of an archaeological conservation easement on their Cascabel property.

Mignon is survived by her husband, Harold, two daughters, Betsy and Jo Ann, two grandsons, Joshua and Eli, and four great-grandchildren.

Those that came to know Mignon will miss her poetry recitations, wit, humor and courage.

Eliot H. Edwards

1918 - 2003

Eliot H. Edwards, 85 years old, of St. David, Ariz., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at his home, with his family.

He was born April 17, 1918, in Detroit, Mich. His parents were Charles Baron Edwards and Myrtle Pringle Edwards.

The Edwards have resided in Arizona for 20 years, 14 of which were in St. David.

He will be remembered for the gourds he raised, sculpted and painted. He ran the "Talking Drum Gourd" business. He was featured with a photo in the 1995 Seasons paper.

Survivors are: wife, Catherine of St. David, Ariz.; daughter, Diane Taylor Surratt of Benson, Ariz.; sister, Patricia Weingart of Florida; grandson, Eric Lee Taylor of Colorado.

The family will hold private services.

Mildred S. Brandt

1916 - 2003

Mildred S. Brandt, 86, a 61-year resident of Benson, died March 7, 2003, in Benson. She previously resided in Hot Bottom, Pa. She was born March 8, 1916, in Scranton, Pa., to Charles and Florence Carey Sisco.

Mildred attended 4 years of college (St. Mary's Nursing School), and worked as a registered nurse.

Services were held Tuesday, March 11, at 10 a.m., at Richardson's Remembrance Chapel, officiated by Cecil R. Richardson.

Casket bearers were Corky Brandt, Jamie Williamson, Carl Miller, David Vanaglash, Jim Tucker and Al Carruthers. Interment was at Cochise Gardens of Rest, Benson.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Emory, in 1978, daughter Marion Zumbel in 1978, mother, Florence Sisco, in 1978, and sister Marion Oakley in 2002. Survivors include son Corky (Betty) Brandt of Benson and daughter Margaret Hall of Grass Valley, Calif.; also many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Paul James Taylor

1925 - 2003

Paul James Taylor, 78, died March 29, 2003, in Tucson. He was a 3-year resident of Benson, and previously lived in Tucson.

He was born Jan. 14, 1925, in Clinton, Ind., to Guy Charles and Letta Leona Shelby Taylor.

He attended four years of college and was an aerospace engineer with Allied Signal Corp. Paul was a member of the Elks in Lusk, Wyo., Escapees and RV Travel Club. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Paul was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Benson, where a memorial service was held April 2, with Rev. Jon Hermes officiating.

He was preceded in death by daughter Susie in 1946, and sister Lizzie. Survivors include his wife, Alice Taylor, of Benson; two sons, Steven (Susan) Taylor of St. Paul, Minn., and David (Jane) Taylor of Tustin, Calif.; one daughter, Nancy (Robert) Rhinhart of Lakewood, Calif.; four stepchildren, Linda Harbour of Bentonville, Ark., Katherine (Edward) Tree of San Gabriel, Calif., James Harbour of Marysville, Calif., and Karen Charter of Colusa, Calif.; brother Charles Taylor of Mesa; 11 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Mildred M. Comstock

1916 - 2003

Mildred M. Comstock, 86, a 51-year resident of the Dragoon/Benson area, died April 6, 2003, in Tucson. She previously lived in Pennsylvania.

She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Lloyd, Pa., to Preston and Alma Emick Bohnert. She was a homemaker; and also served in the Community Services Group of Seventh Day Adventist Church for numerous years.

She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Benson, where visitation and services will be held Sunday, April 13. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with services following at 10 a.m., officiated by Pastor Forss.

Casket bearers are Ellard Comstock, Marty Comstock, Mae Ella Flanders, Bill Flanders, Rob Blue, Brent Lehman and Stan Lehman. Interment at Cochise Gardens of Rest, Benson.

She was preceded in death by son Albert, May of 1998. Survivors include husband, Clifton Comstock of Dragoon; son Thurston (Della Mae) Comstock, also of Dragoon; two brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Bohnert of Lexington, Ky. and Gene Bohnert of Earlville, N.Y.; two sisters, Marion Witt of Fletcher, N.C. and Beverly Shaddik of Earlville, N.Y.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements under the direction of Richardson's Remembrance Center, Benson.

Alan J. Dewey

Jan. 19, 2004

Alan J. Dewey, 44, joined his Heavenly Father on Jan. 19, 2004.

A native Tucsonan and a graduate of Flowing Wells High School, Alan also served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Alan was living in St. David, where he served the Lord as an active member of the LDS Church. He was also an active Boy Scout leader and was extremely devoted to his entire family and community.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Josephine Dewey; sisters, Cathy (Lynn) Hansen and Shelley (Greg) Cox; brother, Kelly (Maria) Dewey; wife, Nancy Dewey; daughters, Ashley Dewey and Allison Dewey; son, Larry Dewey; two sons by a prior marriage (Teresa): Jeffrey Dewey and Daniel Dewey; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who love and will miss him very much.

A celebration of his life was held at St. David LDS Church, Friday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. Interment was a St. David Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alan J. Dewey Memorial Fund at the Bank of America, Benson, AZ.

Lois Fern Patterson

1920 - 2004

Lois Fern Patterson, 83, of Benson, died Jan. 19, 2004. She lived in the vicinity 41 years and previously resided in Monticello, Ark.

She was born in Monticello, on March 31, 1920, to Perry Oscar and Maudie Floe McMillan Wright. Lois worked as a nurse and also as a security officer.

She served in the U.S. Army during World War II, WAC.

Lois was a member of First Assembly of God, Benson, where services were held Jan. 23, at noon, with Pastor Kirk Sorensen officiating.

Casket bearers were Steven Trujillo, Michael Trujillo, Rene Bernal, Speedy Leon Green II, Darrell Howell and Ed Monzingo.

Interment was a Cochise Gardens of Rest, Benson.

Survivors include one son, Pastor Robert (Roberta) Huebner of Phoenix; one daughter, DeEtte Yancy of Lake Village, Ark.; two brothers, Oscar (Frances) Wright of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Don (Reatha) Wright of Ozark, Ark.; two sisters, Ruth Green of Benson and Mary M. Garrison of West Monroe, La.; also five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
