William Matthews (Matt) Dalton
June 27, 1922 - February 4, 2009

William Matthews (Matt) Dalton of San Diego, born June 27, 1922 in Chicago, passed away on Feb. 4. Matt was a resident of the Coronado Shores from 1998 to 2007. He was retired chairman of the Dalton Foundries, Inc.

Matt attended Culver Military Academy, Butler University and the advanced management program of Harvard Business School. He was founder and chairman of the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation as well as the Kosciusko Leadership Academy. He served as chairman of the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce (1983,) chairman of the Indiana Committee on Youth Employment (1979-82,) councilman on the Kosciusko County Council (1980-84,) trustee for the Indiana Vocational Technical College (1964-68,) member of the Warsaw Community School Board (1962-68,) founder and chairman of the Industrial Division of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce (1959) and founder of Warsaw Junior Achievement (1953.)

Matt is survived by his wife Fran; his children Jim; Brad; and Kay; his step-son Russ; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

There will be a memorial service in Warsaw, Ind. in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nativity Prep Academy, 3233 Market Street San Diego, CA 92101, nativityprep.org.

Virginia Knowles O'Grady
February 9, 1914 - February 17, 2009

Virginia K. O'Grady, a longtime resident of Coronado and Virginia Beach, Va., died peacefully in her sleep following a stroke. She was 95 years old.

Virginia was born and raised in Lockport, N.Y. She graduated from Lockport High School in 1932 and attended Edgewood Park Junior College in Greenwich, Conn., graduating in 1934. She enjoyed horse jumping and equestrian training. Virginia moved to New York City following her graduation from junior college.

In 1938 Virginia married her high school sweetheart, James W. O'Grady, Vice Admiral U.S. Navy (ret.) two years after his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. Virginia supported her husband throughout his almost 40 years of active duty in many locations in the U.S. and overseas in Japan and England. In Japan she taught English to wives of Japanese military personnel. As the spouse of the U.S. naval attaché in London, she dined at Buckingham Palace. She greatly enjoyed collecting Asian and European antiques. In their last tour of duty in Norfolk, Va., as resident of Delaware House, she often entertained as spouse of the deputy supreme allied commander Atlantic. After retirement, the O'Gradys spent 10 years in Virginia Beach growing prize-winning camellias before returning to Coronado in 1980, where James passed away in 1986.

Virginia married Charles B. Hammond in 1990 and enjoyed several years of travel and companionship prior to his death in 1993. She relished her time working in an antique shop in La Jolla. She had a very generous spirit and supported many charities.

Virginia was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a U.S. Navy ship sponsor.

Virginia is survived by two sons James, Jr. of Rancho Bernardo; and Thomas of Suffolk, Va.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A private memorial service will be held followed by cremation and internment in the family plot in Lockport, N.Y. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 Crest Street, Escondido, CA 92025.

Helen Tyler
October 3, 1918 - May 3, 2009

A longtime resident of Coronado, Helen Tyler died May 13 in Parker,  Colo., where she had moved to be near her daughter.

Following retirement with Minneapolis public schools, she and her husband Tracy Tyler moved to Coronado. She was a longtime volunteer at the Coronado Public Library, also serving on the library board. She enjoyed volunteering for the Crown Garden Club and the Coronado Historical Society as well as serving as a volunteer counselor with Navy relief.

Preceded in death by her husband, Helen is survived by her daughter Patricia (James) Neel of Aurora,  Colo.; sons Fletcher Tyler of Walnut Creek; and Ralph Tyler of Sudbury, Mass.; and four grandsons. A memorial service was held May 20 at Shalom Park Senior Residence in Aurora.

Petra Ann Gemmingen Morris
June 23, 1965 - June 28, 2009

At sunrise on Sunday morning, June 28, Petra journeyed from the loving arms of her husband Bruce to the welcoming arms of Jesus.

Petra was born June 23, 1965 in Rochester, Minn., the fourth of five children born to Dr. George and Marcia Gemmingen.

Petra spent her childhood in Granada Hills where her talent and ambition were recognized early on when she received the honor of most likely to succeed from her classmates at St. Euphrasia Parish School. She graduated from Louisville High School in 1983 and went to Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., earning a B.A. in English literature with a minor in pre-med. Upon graduation in 1987, she attended law school at Santa Clara University receiving her Juris Doctorate in 1990 and in 1996 received her R.N. degree from the Monterey Peninsula College.

During law school she was introduced by her sister Gina to her future husband Bruce while he was attending basic underwater demolition/SEAL training in Coronado. It was love at first sight and the two were never separated again. Bruce and Petra celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary this past March.

Petra enjoyed playing the violin, was an accomplished soccer player at the collegiate level and a life-long skier and hiker. Some of her greatest joys were the times that she spent outdoors with family and friends among the wildflowers in the mountains of Mammoth Lakes.

She was a woman of profound Catholic faith and served as an inspiration to others with her ability to see the silver lining in every situation. Ever the optimist, Petra's smile and positive attitude were contagious. She will be loved and missed forever and always remembered for her kindness and gentle spirit.

Petra is survived by her husband Bruce; her three children Colton; Victoria; and Claire; her parents Dr. George and Marcia Gemmingen; and her siblings David Gemmingen; Renée von Gemmingen Perko; Gina von Gemmingen Webb; and Lt. Col. Dana Gemmingen, U.S. Marine Corps. She was preceded in death by her daughter Elizabeth.

The Morris family would like to extend their gratitude for all the incredible support, prayers and care they received from friends and family, the doctors, nurses and staff at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, Sharp Chula Vista Outpatient Infusion Center, Naval Medical Center San Diego and South County Hematology Oncology. A private inurnment was held at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego followed by a memorial mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado to honor and celebrate Petra's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Petra Morris Memorial Fund through the Navy Federal Credit Union, (888) 842-6328.

ATCS (AW) Randall R. Webb
June 25, 1961 - June 28, 2009

Senior chief aviation technician ATCS (AW) Randall R. Webb, age 48, departed this life on June 28, while on active duty in the United States Navy. He was assigned to commander, naval air forces as a member of the aviation maintenance management team.

Randy was born in Woodland on June 25, 1961 to Jack and Lucille Webb. ATCS (AW) Webb graduated from Woodland High School and went on to complete an architectural drafting certificate at Arizona Automotive Institute in September 1980. After three years of designing mobile homes, ATCS (AW) Webb joined the Navy in March of 1984 in Santa Rosa. After completing recruit basic training in San Diego, he attended Avionics Technician A school and advanced electronics in 1984/1985 at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Millington, Tenn. where he received accelerated advancement to third class avionics technician after completing A school.

After training in Millington, Senior Chief Webb reported to his first duty station at Naval Air Station North Island where he spent his entire career. His assignments included: Sea Control Squadron 41, Sea Control Squadron 33 (two tours,) Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 30, Sea Control Squadron 35, Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) North Island, Naval Air Technical Data and Engineering Service Command Detachment North Island and commander, Naval Air Forces.

His duties throughout his career included maintenance control supervisor, where he coordinated the scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on S-3A/B for their antisubmarine and in-flight refueling missions and C-2 aircraft for their logistic support to the fleet. While at CNATTU, along with his LCPO duties as MTU 1067 LCPO, he also was the international military student officer where he coordinated the logistics for students from five different countries and was their liaison while attending training.

ATCS (AW) Webb's Awards include five Navy Commendation Medals, four Navy Achievement Medals, seven Good Conduct Medals and various campaign medals and unit awards. He was also awarded the Admiral Baird Leadership Award while attached to VS-35.

Randy was a consummate professional throughout his Navy career. He earned the respect and the admiration of superiors and peers alike. He led by example, exuded confidence, set the pace, and always demanded and received the very best effort from subordinates put in his charge. Extremely organized, dedicated and mission-focused, he could always be relied upon to successfully complete his assigned tasks in a timely manner.

He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, son and sibling to his family, as well as a trusted mentor and a great friend to many sailors, marines and civilians during his very remarkable life.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 25 years Shari Webb; children Chera Pfeiffer and Blaine Webb; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Edgar Webb; Sue Neiss; Lisa Brown; and Darren Webb; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
