Linda Scott Kaufman
May 31, 1942 - August 17, 2009

On Aug. 17 our beloved Linda Kaufman passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Linda was born May 31, 1942 in Claremore, Okla., the daughter of Wilma Collins Scott and Raymond Richard Scott and lived there until she went away to college. She attended Christian College in Columbia, Mo. and then transferred to the University of Missouri where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. During her senior year she was honored as one of the three finalists for the coveted title of Miss Mizzou. She received a B.S. degree (with honors) in interior design and fashion merchandising. Thereafter she lived and worked in Chicago, Atlanta and New York before moving to Coronado with her two daughters, Kristin and Leslie and her Naval officer husband Jim, in 1981.

Upon arriving in Coronado she went to work for the interior design firm of Cannell & Chafin in La Jolla, where she was a lead designer and then manager. In 1987 she established her own firm, Linda S. Kaufman & Associates. Over the years, her high-end residential projects took her all over Southern California, as well as to the Bay Area; Napa Valley; Aspen,  Colo.; Steamboat Springs,  Colo.;  Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Hawaii; and Mexico. She was most well-known for her traditional style with a California flair. In her design work Linda created beauty both inside the home and out.

She was a four-time winner of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Design Excellence Awards and several People's Choice Awards for her rooms in Designers Showcase houses. In a poll conducted by Coronado Lifestyles magazine she was voted Favorite Interior Designer in Coronado. Her work was often featured in both national and local interior design publications.

A long time member of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Coronado, she served as an elder for six years and was very involved in various beautification projects in the church. She also served for six years as a commissioner on the Coronado Design Review Commission and for two years on the board of directors of the San Diego ASID chapter.

Besides her love of family and creating beauty through interior design work, Linda loved to travel. She and Jim traveled to many exotic places, with Bali and Tahiti being two of her favorites.

She lived with cancer heroically for eight years. During her long illness she continued her very successful career as an interior designer. She always said; “I may have cancer, but I don't have to live my life as a cancer patient.” During the entire time she was being treated for cancer she continued to work full time, regularly went to her exercise and yoga classes, traveled with her husband and family and lived life to the fullest, never expressing self-pity or defeat. In fact, she rarely discussed her illness with family or friends. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Beautiful both physically and spiritually, Linda will be remembered not only for her style, grace and sophistication, but also for her caring heart, ready smile and adventurous spirit. She lived life to the fullest and was grateful for all that God gave her. As a mother, wife, design professional and friend she excelled. She will be deeply missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by her beloved husband Jim; her daughters Leslie Cunningham; and Kristin Kahle; son-in-law Richard Houston; sister Dr. Mary Louise Willbrand and husband Rick Reike; niece Amy Willbrand of Salt Lake City; and in-laws Suzanne and Peter Bowman of Kittery, Maine; and Torkin Wakefield and Charles Steinberg of Boulder;  Colo.; uncle Gene Cloninger of  Oklahoma City; plus many cousins whom she loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the UCSD Moores Cancer Center, the San Diego Hospice, or your charity of choice.

A memorial service in her honor will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church.
