Ronald E. Duffy

A memorial service for Ronald E. Duffy, 47, of Fairfield will be 6 p.m. today at Community United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Dave Bunje will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rockville Cemetery.

Born July 31, 1952, in Albuquerque, Mr. Duffy died Jan. 13, 2000, in San Francisco.

A prior resident of Wethersfield, England, Mr. Duffy moved to Fairfield in 1964. He served in the Marine Corps from 1970 to 1972 and was honorably discharged as a corporal. He participated in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War.

A graduate of Armijo High School in June 1970, Mr. Duffy received an associate's degree in counseling from Solano Community College and attended California State University, Sacramento.

He worked on the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge and worked in maintenance for the Travis Unified School District. He was a volunteer counselor in Vacaville, and a drug and rehabilitation counselor in Richmond and Oakland.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout and Order of Arrow, the National Honor Society, Narcotics Anonymous. He formed the HVC Global Foundation to find a cure for hepatitis C.

Mr. Duffy is survived by his daughter, Shawna Swanson of Fairfield; mother, Shirley A. of Fairfield; brothers, Kenneth and Brian, both of Fairfield, Dennis of Montana, Patrick of Vacaville; foster brother, James Copland of Fairfield; niece, Shannon of Fairfield; fiancee, Lisa Calderon of Fairfield, his fiancee's sons, Matthew and Vinnie Calderon both of Fairfield; two stepnieces; two stepnephews; and one grandchild.

Memorial contributions can be made to HVC Global Foundation Convention Services, 657 Carolina St., San Francisco, 94107.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Elvira Calvillo Gomez

Memorial services for Elvira Calvillo Gomez, 91, of Suisun are pending. Inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

Mrs. Gomez died Jan. 18, 2000, in her home after a long illness.

Born March 29, 1908, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, she lived in Suisun for 11 years. She worked as a seamstress for 30 years.

Mrs. Gomez is survived by her daughter, Teresa Froschl of Petaluma; sons, Joseph and Richard, both of Suisun, and Paul of Sacramento; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, and son Gabriel.

Arrangements were handled by Fairfield Funeral Home.

Richard 'Dick' McLaughlin

A funeral for Richard 'Dick' McLaughlin, 79, of Dixon will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Peter's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Maurice O'Brien will preside. Burial will follow in Silveyville Cemetery.

Mr. McLaughlin died Jan. 19, 2000, in Sacramento after a long illness.

Born July 17, 1920, in Minneapolis, he lived in Dixon for 42 years. He worked for 31 years for Cargill Inc. in Sacramento as a branch accountant. He had been a former member of the Lions Club and had been on the Library Commission for many years in Dixon.

Mr. McLaughlin loved all sports. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed painting.

Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Clarice of Dixon; daughter, Mary Bechely of Sacramento; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Steve Haskins of Dixon; son, Richard of Ione; sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Barbara of Woodland and Jim and Leanne of Penryn; brother, Frank of Lakeland, Minn.; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to University of California, Davis, Cancer Research Center, 4501 X St., Room 3003, Sacramento, 95817; checks should be made payable to UC Regents.

Memorial contributions also may be made in Mr. McLaughlin's name to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa, 95402.

Carolyn Ann Sweatman

There will be no formal services for Carolyn Ann Sweatman, 67, of Fairfield. Inurnment will be private.

Mrs. Sweatman died Jan. 16, 2000, in NorthBay Medical Center after a short illness.

Born Dec. 24, 1932, in Smackover, Ark., she lived in Fairfield for 37 years. She worked as a teacher for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District for 30 years. She was director of the Choral Belles for many years and a member of the Henderson State Teachers College.

Mrs. Sweatman is survived by her daughter, Holley M. of Fairfield; sons, Harold of Bountiful, Utah, and Stuart of Fairfield; sister, Rose Marie Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; and grandson, Brandon of Fairfield.

Arrangements were handled by Fairfield Funeral Home.

Edwin Karl Busbee

A gathering of family and friends will be held for Edwin Karl Busbee, 57, of Vacaville from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Winters Opera House, 13 Main St., Winters.

Inurnment will be private.

Born April 23, 1942, in Palo Alto, Mr. Busbee died Jan. 20, 2000, in his Vacaville home after a short illness.

He moved to the area 25 years ago.

He worked for PG&E for 30 years, serving last as crew foreman. He enjoyed helping others and was a generous friend.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Vacaville; sons, Stuart of Roseville and Steven of Chico; five brothers, including Paul of Fairfield; and four sisters.

Goy Fuller

Funeral services for Goy Fuller, 65, of Suisun City will be 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville.

Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

The Rev. Ron Collins of the Church of Christ in Sepulvada will officiate.

Born May 27, 1934, in Van Buren, Ark., Mr. Fuller died Jan. 18, 2000, in Northbay Medical Center after a brief illness. He lived in Suisun City for 10 years.

He had been a chief executive officer for the Hoffman Construction Co. and served as a chief financial officer for the Oakland A's baseball team.

He graduated from Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia in 1952 and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He held an associate arts degree in accounting and business and was an active member of the Church of Christ in Rodeo for 39 years.

He met Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan during his tenure as a Richmond Unified School board member, a postion he held for 16 years. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling and being with his family.

Mr. Fuller is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Bruce Leslie of Vacaville and Deanna and Yves Bechnainou of Miami Beach, Fla., son and daughter-in-law Goy II and Tammy of Davis; sisters, Marlin Ownes of Boron and Betty Donner of Bishop; brothers, L.G. of Tombstone, Ariz., and David of Seal Beach; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Harold N. Green Jr.

A memorial service for Harold N. Green Jr., 79, of Fairfield will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Twin Chapels Mortuary in Vallejo.

Inurnment will be private.

Born Jan. 14, 1921, in Detroit, he died Jan. 19, 2000, in a Vallejo convalescent hospital after a brief illness.

He was an Air Force veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, retiring after 28 years as a lieutenant colonel in 1975.

He was an avid golfer who worked as a greenskeeper for six years at Cypress Lakes Golf Course.

Mr. Green is survived by his wife, Peggy Ann of Santa Rosa; daughter, Valaree Hoover of Suisun City; son, Randy of Newport Beach; stepdaughters, Lynn Merrill of Lafayette, Judy Parry-Jones of Santa Rosa and Patti Johnson of Santa Rosa; stepson, Mark Moore of Woodland; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial contribution may be made to the American Liver Foundation.

Arrangements are being handled by Twin Chapels Mortuary.

Alice 'Adelicia' Martinez

A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice 'Adelicia' Martinez, 90, a Solano County resident since 1919, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Winters.

Burial will be in the Winters District Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Ternullo of the church will officiate.

Born Dec. 12, 1908, in Marchal de Lubrin, Almerla, Spain, Mrs. Martinez died Jan. 20, 2000, in Vacaville.

She had worked for Vacaville's Basic Vegetable Co. for more than 20 years and had a life membership in the Vacaville Senior Citizens Club. She also was a member of the Spanish Club.

She was a rancher and homemaker who enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting and bingo.

Mrs. Martinez is survived by daughters, Ann Gertz and Irene George, both of Winters; son, Frank Jr. of Vacaville; grandchildren, Mistee Dennis of Citrus Heights, Deanna Allen and E.J., both of Vacaville, Donna LaViolette of Gridley and Denise Bolla, Chris Gertz, Edward George and Tom George, all of Winters; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil at 7 p.m. in McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville.

Pilar Reyes Quintana

Funeral services for Pilar Reyes Quintana, 87, of Fairfield will be held Tuesday in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

Burial will be in La Piebab Cemetery, Maguelles, Ponce.

Born Jan. 18, 1912, in Ponce, she died Jan. 20, 2000, in NorthBay Medical Center, Fairfield, after a short illness.

She had been a Princess Anna Dolls seamstress for 30 years in New York state.

Mrs. Quintana is survived by her daughters, Elba Elias of Suisun City, Rachel Graziano of Bronx, N.Y., Frances of Ponce, Puerto Rico, and Ismael of Valley Cottage, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

A private family visitation has been held in Nadeau Family Funeral Home, Vacaville.

Joyce K. Thurston

Memorial services for Joyce K. Thurston, 52, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Valley Bible Church in Hercules. Mrs. Thurston died Jan. 15, 2000, following a long illness.

Born Jan. 3, 1948, she is survived by her husband of 19 years, E. Grady Thurston. "Joyce never had an ill word to say about anyone she ever met," he said. "She was an angel that was here with us for a while."

Mrs. Thurston was ahead of her time in researching holistic remedies for multiple sclerosis. While working for Bank of America for 18 years, she began acupuncture treatment in 1976. Two years later she began a regimen of nutritional supplements to treat her disease.

Until 1995 she was swimming 70 laps a day. She was the focus of many front-page stories in local newspapers about her battle with the disease.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, James M. Stanley of Vallejo; her father, C. Vern Lindner of San Pablo; her stepmother, Millie Lindner of San Pablo; a brother, Michael Lindner of Monarch Beach; a stepsister, Elaine Sciarroni of Walnut Creek; and a stepbrother, Wendell Powell of Clearlake.

"She has many other loved ones throughout the Bay Area and the United States that she wanted to say goodbye to, but she ran out of time," her husband noted.

Those wishing to celebrate her life may contact Capital Nurseries in Elk Grove, (916) 684-2100, to purchase a tree that will be planted in the high Sierra in her memory.
