Brendan Anthony Jones

Brendan Anthony Jones, beloved son of Sharon Dellamonica of St. Helena, and Jesse  Jones of Las Vegas, Nev., and brother of Seren Frantz, died unexpectedly. March 15, 2003, after having sought treatment for heart-related pain. Brendan was born Aug. 5, 1979, in Bryn Mawr,  Pennsylvania, and raised in California from the age of one month. He graduated from St. Helena High School, where he was Vice President and Treasurer of the senior class, and a member of the St. Helena High School Jazz Choir. He was a cast member of the St. Helena production of 100 Years of Broadway.

From 1997 to 2001, Brendan attended St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California, majoring in political science. In 2000, as part of his major, he attended the Peace and Justice program of American University in  Washington, D.C., where he was an investigator for the Public Defender’s Office, advocating for mental health rights.

Brendan’s true passion was film. At St. Mary’s he was the film critic and sports editor for the school newspaper, Collegian; and he reviewed films for the campus radio station, where he was known to his friends and radio audiences as “Hollywood” Jones. He was an officer of the Knights of Columbus and Lasallian Collegians, volunteered at Dorothy Day House, a homeless shelter in Berkeley,  Calif., and was a camp counselor at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Napa. Brendan was most recently employed by Federal Terrace Elementary School as a special education assistant, working with an autistic child. Brendan traveled throughout the United States, France, Italy and Mexico.

Brendan was a compassionate person who will be in our hearts always. May the pure light within him guide Brendan home.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2003, at the St. Helena Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brendan  Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, and sent to St. Helena High School, 1401 Grayson Ave., St. Helena, CA 94574.

Beulah Elizabeth Ouellette

Graveside services were held Monday, March 17, for Beulah Elizabeth Ouellette, who died March 10 at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. She was 86.

Born in 1916 in Pittsburgh, Mo., to Robert and Ina Simmons, Mrs. Ouellette worked for a tile factory in El Segundo and owned her own restaurant in Georgia, later managing several apartments.

Mrs. Ouellette is survived by her daughter, Paula Poston of Calistoga, a granddaughter, Barbara Collins, and great grandsons Christopher and Michael.

Mrs. Ouellette was preceded in death by her husband Norman.

John Harrison Clute

Private Services were held on March 24, 2003 for Retired Fire Captain and St. Helena resident, John Harrison Clute, who died on March 23 at the age of 79. Born in Casper, Wyoming in 1923, Mr. Clute moved to Richmond in the mid 30's and married Dora I. Paoli in December, 1942. He joined the Richmond Fire Department in 1945, the year their son, Ronald, was born. A daughter, Christine, was born in 1952.

Mr. Clute worked on the Richmond Fire Department for 33 years, rising to the level of Captain before his retirement in 1978. He and his wife, Dora, moved to their home in St. Helena in 1977.

Mr. Clute was a Third Degree Mason with Bay Cities Lodge No. 337 in Richmond, Ca. After his retirement, Mr. Clute also worked as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels organization of St. Helena. Ca.

Mr. Clute is survived by his wife, Dora and his daughter, Christine of Napa. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilu Rusich of Antioch, Edna Collins of Cameron Park, Darlene Mattos of Davis and Karen Woolworth of Santa Maria, Ca. One brother, Charles, lives in  Texas. Mr. Clute's son, Ronald, passed away in 1979.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Clute is Grandfather to Kyle John and Melissa Meri Fiori and has a Great Granddaughter, Gabrielle, 2, living in Aliso Viejo, Ca. Donations may be made to the cause of individual choice. Arrangements cared for by Morrison Funeral Chapel of St. Helena, Ca.

Virginia C. Weaver

Virginia C. Weaver, 87 of Eskaton Village, Carmichael, and former resident of St. Helena died on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Sutter Hospital with her daughter by her side.

She was born November 11, 1915 in Castle Shannon, PA. She is survived by her daughter, Jane of Stowe, Vermont; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Barbara Scurfield of Sacramento; a niece, Judy Whitney and her husband, Marlin, of Clayton; a nephew, David Whelan and daughters, Katie and Jenny of Sacramento; a nephew, Dave Scurfield and his wife, Mary, and their two children, Abby and Jack; a nephew, Donald Scurfield and his wife, Trish, and their son, Christopher of Australia; a nephew, Steve Scurfield and his son, Tanner, of Sacramento; a sister-in-law, Gloria Scurfield, of Santa Cruz; a niece, Jill Bates and her husband, Michael, and their two children, Austin and Jackie of Santa Cruz; three nephews Geoff, Greg and John Scurfield and his daughter, Renee, all of Santa Cruz; a grand niece, Michele Ramia and her husband, Jeff, and two children, Whitney and Zoe; a grand nephew, Marlin Whitney III and his wife, Keri, and three children, Drew, Katelyn Jane and Kristen of Folsom. She was predeceased by her husband, Don, her sister, Florence Whelan Rounds of Sacramento and her brother, Jack Scurfield of Sacramento.

Virginia was very active in the Children’s Hospital of the East Bay for many years while living in Berkeley. She was chairman of Cedar Branch and chaired their annual Christmas Benefit at the Claremont Hotel for several years. Virginia and Don lived in New York City from 1960 to 1964, then returned to Berkeley for a few years before moving to St. Helena in the early 1970s. Virginia served on the board of the Napa Valley Wine Library for 25 years and was a member of the St. Helena Luncheon Club serving on the steering committee. She was a founding member of Meadowood Country Club and was made an honorary member when she left St. Helena in 1998. She was also a member of the Garden Club. Virginia and Don were members of the Square Dance group for many years.

She will be remembered fondly by her family and friends as a generous, caring person and an exceptional cook. Gingie, as she was lovingly called by her family and friends, was happiest doing for others. A Remembrance Service and Reception was held on Sunday, March 23, 2003 at Eskaton Village. Remembrances may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.

Marjorie Dorothy Hamm

Private services will be held at an unannounced date for Marjorie Dorothy Hamm of Calistoga, who died on March 21. She was 85.

Born in 1917 to Charles and Dorothy Warren in Sacramento, Mrs. Hamm lived in Sacramento until a recent move to Calistoga. Mrs. Hamm spent many years working for Pacific Bell and Breuners.

Mrs. Hamm is survived by her son, James Sadleir of St. Helena; daughter Patricia Barker of Henderson, Nev.; a brother, Theodore Warren of Aptos,  Calif.; a niece, Elizabeth Warren; and three grandchildren as well as six great-grandchildren.

Joseph A. Nichelini

Joseph Antone Nichelini, who died March 18 at the age of 71, was a noted grape grower and Chiles Valley vintner.

The son of Joseph and Leona Nichelini of Vallejo, Mr. Nichelini was an apprentice fire control mechanic at Mare Island from 1951 to 1956, and graduated from University of Nevada in 1961. He returned to Mare Island where he was an electrical inspector for five years, then became a stockbroker in 1967, his profession until his death.

A resident of the Napa Valley since 1963 and an avid 49er football fan, Mr. Nichelini was president of the Nichelini Winery and president of Antone Nichelini Family, Inc.

In addition, he was a member of the St. Helena Rotary, the Alumni Association of the University of Nevada, a member of the California State Sheriffs Association, a member of the Farm Bureau and a charter member of the Market Town Water Ski Club.

Mr. Nichelini is survived by two sons, Joseph C. Nichelini and Michael F. Nichelini, both of Napa; and a sister, Ethel Brookman of Renton, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, and by a sister, Frances Sunseri.

A funeral Mass was March 22 celebrated at St. Helena Catholic Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Helena Rotary Foundation for Youth Projects, P.O. Box 211, St. Helena, CA 94574.

Otis Cook

A private memorial service was held for Otis Cook, former resident of Calistoga, who died on Oct. 20. He was 81.

Mr. Cook was raised in Calistoga and graduated from Calistoga High School in 1940. During World War II, Mr. Cook served as an Army Paratrooper in the Pacific Islands and later worked for over 30 years for the Department of Defense as a warehouse foreman.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy; his son James of San Leandro and grandchildren Anna Cook and Gabriele Cook.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to charities of choice.

Arrangements by Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Hayward.
