Lawrence A. Casner

A funeral for Lawrence A. Casner, 63, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Friday in Nadeau Family Funeral Home. Pastor John Hanson of Parkway Community Church will preside. Interment will follow in Rockville Cemetery in Suisun Valley with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Born Feb. 5, 1937, in St. Louis, Mich., Mr. Casner died Feb. 27, 2000, at his home in Vacaville.

He worked as an operator for the past 11 years at Chevron in Richmond and was a veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring in 1979 with the rank of senior master sergeant. He served for 25 years. His assignments included performing mechanic and loadmaster duties on the C-123 and C-130, plus two tours in Vietnam. He was an avid fisherman whose hobbies included gold panning and collecting firearms. He was also a great provider and protector for his family.

Mr. Casner is survived by his wife, Yoshi of Vacaville; daughters, Judy Vucurevich of Suisun, Gail Benton of Seoul, South Korea, Diane of Vacaville and Frances Lee of Arlington, Texas; and sons, Alan of Danville, Stephen of Vacaville, Yoshimasa Takara of Miyaka, Okinawa, Don McKinney of Arlington, Wash.; sister, Gail Johnson of Arlington, Wash., and 13 grandchildren.

Olive Catherine Cruz

A funeral for Olive Catherine Cruz, 81, of Fairfield, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. the same day. Interment will be at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born July 21, 1918, in Spencer, Ind., Mrs. Cruz died Feb. 26, 2000, in Fairfield after a short illness.

She lived in Fairfield for 55 years.

Mrs. Cruz is survived by her sons, Dana of Indianola, Wash., and Shawn of Portland, Ore.; brother, Frederick 'Todd' Pratt of New Castle, Ind.; and eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the American Heart Association, Redwood Empire Chapter, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa, 95402.

Arrangements were handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Annie I. Lopez

A Mass of Christian Burial for Annie I. Lopez, 78, of Winters, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Joseph Ternullo of St. Anthony will preside. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at St. Anthony with a rosary at 7 p.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Winters.

Born April 28, 1921, in Vacaville, Mrs. Lopez died Feb. 27, 2000, in Winters after a long illness.

She was a resident of Winters for 63 years and worked alongside her husband at their ranch. She was a member of the Iberia Spanish Club and St. Anthony Altar Society. Her hobbies included cooking and spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lopez is survived by her husband, Nick of Winters; son and daughter-in-law, John and Gaye of Winters; daughter, Rose Marie Hendrick of Winters; grandchildren, Mark Ramos and his wife, Jennifer of Winters; Nicole Brace and her husband, Robert of Winters, Nick of San Diego, Barry Staata and his wife, Char of Woodland and Kari Staats of Discovery Bay; great-grandchildren, Alyssia Staats of Woodland, Scott and Morgan Brace of Winters, Jared and Ryan Ramos of Winters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Anthony Altar Society, 511 Main St., Winters, 95694 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements were handled by McCune Garden Chapel.

Robert Joseph Lopez

A funeral for Robert Joseph Lopez, 42, of Fairfield, will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Solano Valley Mortuary. The Rev. Louie Valenzuela of Holy Spirit Church will officiate. Burial will be in Santa Barbara.

Born July 10, 1957, in Santa Barbara, Mr. Lopez died Feb. 25, 2000, at home.

He was a cabinet designer and builder and served in the California Army National Guard.

Mr. Lopez is survived by his parents, Frederick L. and Rachel F. Lopez of Fairfield; sisters, Elizabeth of Santa Barbara, Roberta Melshelmer of Squim, Wash., Deborah Emery of Austin, Texas, and Carol Gray of London; brothers, Brian of Santa Barbara and Michael Lopez of Paradise; and sister-in-law, Toni of Santa Barbara.

Mary Lee Thomas

A memorial service for Mary Lee Thomas, 67, of Vacaville, will be 2 p.m. Friday at McCune Garden Chapel. Pastor Henry Wells of Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Born Oct. 3, 1932, in DeSoto, Fla., Mrs. Thomas died Feb. 26, 2000, in Vacaville after a sudden illness.

She was a homemaker for several years. She loved to travel and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by her husband, Al of Vacaville; sons, Michael Welch of Athol, Idaho, Tim Welch of Vacaville and Daryl of Vacaville; stepsons, Avie of Norfolk, Va., and Gary of Ione; stepdaughter, Alicia of Santa Cruz; numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Tomas R. Garcia Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Tomas R. Garcia Jr., 78, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Bill Feeser will officiate. Interment will follow at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McCune Garden Chapel.

Mr. Garcia died on Feb. 28, 2000, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo after a short illness.

Born on Feb. 7, 1922, in Laredo, Texas, he settled in Vacaville in 1953, where he became an influential businessman. He left the U.S. Air Force after 11 years as a pilot. He and his wife, Toby, owned and operated several businesses, including Toby's Dress Shop and the Old Library Restaurant and Shops. He did all the bookkeeping and much of the work 'behind the scenes.'

He was past president of the Chamber of Commerce and a Rotarian. He worked for Hansel Ford, was the patio manager for the Nut Tree Restaurant, later became a sales manager for Stith Chevrolet and retired as a salesman for Shellworth Chevrolet in 1994. He enjoyed reading, gardening and his family.

Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 54 years, Toby; daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Bill Vest of Vacaville, Cynthia and Ed Atkinsons of Vacaville and Patricia and Tim Daniels of Menlo Park; daughters, Pam Smeenk of Green Valley and Catherine De Los Santos of Menlo Park; son and daughter-in-law, Tom Garcia III and Deborah of Vacaville; sisters, Olga Bergeron of San Antonio, Texas, and Licha Davis of Austin, Texas; and brother, Chuy Garcia of Aptos. He also had 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa, 95402, in the name of Tomas Garcia Jr.

John Stanley McConnell

A funeral for John Stanley McConnell, 87, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Friday at Vaca Hills Chapel. Inurnment will be private. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel.

Mr. McConnell died on Feb. 26, 2000, at VacaValley Hospital after a long illness.

Born on April 5, 1912, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he moved to the area 26 years ago. He worked as a carpenter and supervisor at Chevron for 27 years. He was a masterful cabinet maker. He served in World War II and was a member of the Vacaville Lodge 134 F.& A.M.

Mr. McConnell is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James and Lonnie of Bangor; grandsons, Micah J. of Bangor and Matthew V. of Albuquerque, N.M.; stepchildren, Jenny Ghera and Jeff Coomer, both of Tracy; and sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and Paul Shellhammer of Ashtabula. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea in 1997; and parents, Hiram and Mary.

Arnold Wayne Wright

A memorial service for Arnold Wayne Wright, 59, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Friday at Green Valley Mortuary in Cameron Park.

Mr. Wright died on Feb. 22, 2000, at his home in Vacaville.

Born on Dec. 14, 1940, in Quincy, Ill., he was an attorney. He graduated from the University of California, Davis, Law School and was a member of the California Bar Association. He was an avid Oakland Raiders fan and will be best remembered for the joy he took in being a father.

Mr. Wright is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathleen Ann; son, Christopher; brothers, Gary and Donald; and sisters, Doris Thoss, Sharon Rodrigues and Barbara Brooner. He also had numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Florence; and sister, Ruby Fuller.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert H. Canby

A memorial service for Robert H. Canby, 88, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Marks Lutheran Church. The Rev. Todd Bertani will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Vaca Hills Chapel. A final service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rolling Hills Mausoleum in Richmond by the Bay Cities Masonic Lodge No. 337.

Born April 14, 1911, in Elmhurst, now East Oakland, Mr. Canby died Feb. 26, 2000, in Suisun City at Good Samaritan Care Home after a long illness.

He enjoyed traveling, especially on trains, and was one of the last engineers to work on the Nut Tree train.

Mr. Canby is survived by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn, and many good friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to St. Marks Building Fund, 1600 Union Ave., Fairfield, 94533.

Norma G. Kister

At the request of the family, no formal services will be held for Norma G. Kister, 85, of Hayward. Entombment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park in Fairfield.

Mrs. Kister died on Feb. 26, 2000, in Hayward after a short illness.

Born on Oct. 29, 1914, in Fairfield, she lived in Hayward for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker for 68 years. She graduated from Armijo High School in 1932 and moved to Hayward in 1950. She loved the piano and painting.

Mrs. Kister is survived by her son, James D. Mason of San Mateo; and daughters, Joan Mason of Modesto and Norma of San Leandro.

Arrangements were handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Lily Estelle Verwoest

Graveside services for Lily Estelle Verwoest, 84, of Honolulu will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery.

Mrs. Verwoest died on Feb. 27, 2000.

Born on March 19, 1915, in New York, she was a resident of Vacaville for 40 years before moving to Hawaii.

Mrs. Verwoest is survived by her husband, Henry John; sons, Jon Henry and Keith Collin; daughter, Diane Verwoest-Brown; and grandchildren, Erik, David and Levi Verwoest and Ian Verwoest-Koulax.

Arrangements are being handled by Williams Funeral Service in Honolulu.

Johnny J. Cavoretto

A memorial service for Johnny J. Cavoretto, 79, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Monday at McCune Garden Chapel. Inurnment will be private.

Mr. Cavoretto died on March 1, 2000, in Walnut Creek after a short illness.

Born on Jan. 24, 1921, in Eagerville, Ill., he lived in Vacaville for the past three years. He moved from Benld, Ill., to Richmond with his parents and brothers in 1935.

He graduated from Richmond Union High School in Richmond in 1939. He worked for the city of Richmond and Napa Sanitation before retiring. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of the Eagle Lodge of Richmond and Standard Oil Rod and Gun Club of Richmond. He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and was a wonderful artist. He enjoyed teaching his sons to box, breeding English bulldogs, woodcarving and spending time with his family.

Mr. Cavoretto is survived by his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth of Vacaville; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Donna of Oakhurst, and Robert and Brenda of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ted Francis of Vacaville. He also had seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one great-grandson.

George Thomas Middleton III

A memorial service for George Thomas Middleton III, 53, of Guinda will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Guinda Grange Hall. A reception will follow at the family's home.

Mr. Middleton died on Feb. 19, 2000, at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento.

Born on Nov. 29, 1946, in Indianapolis, he lived in Vacaville for many years before moving to Guinda in 1988. Before retirement, he worked as a civil servant for 30 years at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. When he retired, he went on to obtain his teaching credential in vocational welding. At the time of his death, he was working for Microform Precision in West Sacramento as a foreman and welding instructor.

Mr. Middleton is survived by his wife, Margaret Eileen of Guinda; daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Scott Young of Kings Beach, and Shelley and Kenny Shigh of Vacaville; sons and daughters-in-law, George and Courtney of Dunsmuir and Shawn and Hope of Fairfield; stepson, Tim Perez and his wife, Rachel of Woodland; and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Val of Oregon House. He also had seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mercy Foundation Cardiac Care, 10540 White Rock Road, Rancho Cordova, 95670.

Gary Dennis Strawn

A funeral for Gary Dennis Strawn, 49, of Suisun City will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Chapel One on Travis Air Force Base.

The Rev. Jayson Landeza will officiate. Burial will be at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Solano Valley Mortuary.

Mr. Strawn died on Feb. 29, 2000, in an accident on Travis Air Force Base.

Born on Oct. 24, 1950, in California, he lived in Suisun City for the past 30 years. He was a major in the Civil Air Patrol in the Pacific region and California. He was a radio frequency coordinator and the California Wing Digital Network manager.

Mr. Strawn is survived by his wife, Cecilia of Suisun City; parents, Mario and Patricia Ann Guzman of Sacramento and Monroe of Folsom; sisters, Stephanie, Patricia, Karen Bartels and Marcy Guzman, all of Anaheim; brothers, Davis of Dayton, Ohio, Monroe III of San Diego, and Robert of Pleasanton. He was preceded in death by his sister, Michelle.
