Alice E. Fowler

Services were held on March 31 in  Washington for Alice Elizabeth Carr Fowler, who died on March 24. She was 96.

Born in Sumner, Wis., to Fred Maxson and Etta May Carr, Mrs. Fowler taught English and speech as well as worked in the library at various educational institutions including Union college, Auburn Academy and Pacific Union College.

Mrs. Fowler is survived by her husband, Ray W. Fowler; two foster daughters, Stacia Merickel and Vivian Black, of College Place, Wash., and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Clara E. Rogers Elementary School Building Fund in Care of Mountain View Funeral Chapel, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, Wash., 99362.

Robert Louis Hand

Mr. Robert Louis Hand, born in 1924 in Oakland,  Calif., died on March 29. He was 78.

Mr. Hand attended Oakland schools and graduated from Fremont High School, served in WWII with the Navy Seebees and as a post-war Merchant Marine Seaman. After over 30 years, Mr. Hand retired from the Teamster’s Union and moved in 1976 from Danville to Calistoga.

Mr. Hand is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Bledsoe of Calistoga; two grandsons and five great grandchildren of Napa; and a brother, Donald Hand, of Alameda,  Calif.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Research Fund, 1031  Jefferson Avenue, Napa, CA 94558.

Helen Rosalie Trainor

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at the St. Helena Catholic Church, 1340 Tainter Street for Helena Rosalie Trainor, who died on April 6. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at Morrison Funeral Chapel, 990 Vintage Ave. She was 88.

Mrs. Trainor worked as a Legislative Secretary for the State of California for 22 years and was a member of the Ukrainian club of Sacramento and the Retired Legislative Secretaries.

Mrs. Trainor is survived by her three sons; Tom Trainor of Calistoga, Michael Trainor of Turkey and Richard Trainor of Eugene, Ore.; five grandchildren, Mick Trainor of Pittsburg, Penn., Tom Trainor of Long Beach, Josh Trainor of Napa, Tess Trainor of Calistoga and Chris Regalado of Deer Park. Mrs. Trainor was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Pryhoda.

Peggy Hogan

At her request, there will be no services for Peggy Hogan, of Calistoga, who died on April 5. She was 77.

Born in Terre Haute, Ind., in 1925, Ms. Hogan worked as a waitress for 40 years and was a resident of Napa County since 1990.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Diane Snider of Santa Cruz and by many friends.

John William Pressey

John William Pressey, 75, passed away at his home on April 12, 2003, Calistoga, CA. He was the son of the late Lyle Blaine Pressey and the late Lydia (Moors) Pressey, he was born on August 1, 1927. He was a native born Calistogan. John was the great grandson of the late Isaac and Hanna Minor of Arcata, CA. He was the grandson of the late Frank and Hanna Moors of Calistoga, CA.

John served in the US Navy during WWII from 1945 to 1948. He retired as a surveyor for Sonoma County and worked for Dimension Engineering thereafter. John is survived by his loving wife, Judith Ann Pressey of Calistoga, his three sons and their wives; James Earl and Suha Pressey of San Jose, CA; Craig William and Cathy Pressey of Calistoga and their two daughters (John’s granddaughters) Brittany and Kera Pressey; and son, Alec Jay Philip Pressey.

John lived a happy and fulfilled life, surrounded by his family and his many friends. A private service will be held for the immediate family. A memorial celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the spouses and families of those lost in action in the Iraq War through an organization, or to a charity of your choice.

Ramon T. Verdin

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, April 16, for Ramon T. Verdin, who died on April 13. He was 78.

Born in Jalisco, Mexico, to Pedro and Conception Verdin, Mr. Verdin moved to Guanajuato at the age of 5, and in 1944 worked for the Bracero program in which temporary agricultural and railroad workers from Mexico were brought to the US as an emergency measure to meet the labor shortage of WWII. Mr. Verdin married Socorro P. Madrigal in 1947 at St. Helena Catholic Church and worked for Kenneth Stephen Caims at Caims Ranch from 1948 until 1997. The couple raised their six children on the ranch. In 1956, Mr. Verdin was amongst the founders of El Comite Mexicano de Beneficencia, Sucursal #17 of Rutherford and he served as the club’s treasurer for many years. Mr. Verdin was also a member of Club Guadalupano of Yountville.

Mr. Verdin is survived by his children Teresa  Jones of Napa; Rosita Leija of Napa; Pedro Verdin of Rutherford; Anita Verdin of Rutherford; and Dolores Espinoza of Calistoga; six grandchildren: Joe and Micaela Leija, Paul and Sarah Jones, and Efrain and Andres Espinoza; and six siblings, Socorro, Nicolas, Manuel and Pedro Verdin; Margarita Gonzalez; and Valeria Rivera of Guanajuato, Mexico. Mr. Verdin was preceded in death by his wife Socorro and his eldest son.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: El Comite Mexicano de Beneficiencia, Sucursal #17, PO Box 179, Rutherford, CA 94573, or The American Diabetes Association, in Mr. Verdin’s honor.

David Matthew Greene of Angwin

Born: January 12, 1964
Died: April 13, 2003

Survivors are his children, Tracy Lynn Greene of Mission Viejo, CA and Alexander Greene of Angwin, CA. Also surviving are his mother, Judy Greene of Angwin; brother, Andrew Greene and wife Allison, and their children, Thacher, Henry and Carysa, of Angwin; brother Robert Greene and wife Connie and their children, Taylor, Madison and Thomas, of St. Helena; sister, Melinda Greene of Charlottesville, Virginia. Also surviving is his former wife, Christy Greene of Angwin. David was pre-deceased by his beloved father, Robert Greene.

David will be remembered always by both his family and many friends. All of us knew if we needed to talk to someone on any matter, either a joyful one or a troubling one, you could call David and he was always there to listen.

He was a senior claims examiner for Athens/Jenkins Administrators in Concord and loved his work at the company and all the people he worked with.

He fought a valiant battle with both M.S. and cancer at his young age and when he finally knew the struggle was ending, he looked forward with confidence to going to be with Jesus and to see his beloved dad again.

Lucille Eckart

A private interment will be held for Lucille Eckart, former resident of Calistoga, who died on April 20. She was 91.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Mrs. Eckart began her teaching career on the island of Kauai and later taught throughout the Hawaiian islands. In 1980, she married Robert Eckart of Calistoga, where they resided until his death in 1989. Mrs. Eckart moved to Rohnert Park after her husband’s death.

Contribution may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of the donors’ choice.
