Edward Thomas Zelinski
A vigil service for Edward Thomas Zelinski, 81, of Fairfield will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield. Inurnment will be private. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Zelinski died on April 17, 2000, at his home in Fairfield after a short illness.
Born on Dec. 1, 1918, in Rosceau, N.Y., he lived in Fairfield for 35 years. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1939 and was married in 1949. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force for 24 years, serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam before retiring in 1971.
He came to Travis Air Force Base in 1965 and worked as a foreman in the sheet metal shop. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a custodian for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District. He was a devout Catholic, attending Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Fairfield. He was a member of the Bocci Club at the Fairfield Senior Center and was active in the Disabled American Veterans Fairfield-Suisun Chapter No. 81.
Mr. Zelinski is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Charles Overstreet of Fairfield and Teresa and David Grosberg of Austell, Ga.; grandson, Erick Hussey of Fairfield; granddaughter and her husband, Samantha and Jesse Muniz of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.; and great-grandson, Giovanni Muniz of Holloman Air Force Base. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, in 1992.
Oliver Hector Griffith
Graveside services for Oliver Hector Griffith, 84, of Sacramento, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. Father Luciano Valenzuela of Holy Spirit Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will follow.
Born Nov. 22, 1915, in the West Indes, Mr. Griffith died April 17, 2000, in Carmichael.
A member of the Merchant Marine, Mr. Griffith worked for Trans World Airlines as a skycap for 15 years. He lived in Fairfield from 1987 to 1993.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Johnson of Citrus Heights; granddaughter, Cydney White of Richmond; grandson, Michael White of Carmichael; great-grandsons, Phillip and James Martin of Fairfield. Mr. Griffith was preceded in death in 1993 by his wife, Marjorie.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Booker Lary
Memorial services for Booker Lary, 88, of Vallejo, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McCune Garden Chapel. Elder Jonathan Jenkins of Jehovah Witness Church of Vallejo will officiate. Inurnment will be at San Joaquin National Cemetery.
Born Feb. 3, 1912, in DeBerry, Texas, Mr. Lary died April 19, 2000, in Vacaville.
Mr. Lary, the ninth child of Alex and Donnie Lary, received his primary education in DeBerry.
In 1944, he was inducted into the Army Air Corps and served the next 30 years in the Air Force before retiring in Texas. In 1996, Mr. Lary moved to Vallejo to be with his daughter. He had resided in the Windsor House Convalescent Hospital.
Mr. Lary was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Shreveport, La.
He is survived by his children, Booker T. Jr. and James of Daly City, Alex of San Francisco, Loretta of Vallejo, Shirley May of Dallas; brother, Robert of Oakland; sister, Josephine Williams of Marshall, Texas; grandsons, Eric, Anthony and Kenneth of Daly City and James of Dallas; great-grandson, Justin of Daly City; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Mr. Lary was preceded in death by a son and other siblings.
Donald M. Olds
At his request, no services will be held for Donald M. Olds, 89, of Coquille, Ore. Interment will be at Tulocay Cemetery
in Napa.
Born May 5, 1910, in Wenatchee, Wash., Mr. Olds died April 17, 2000, in Coquille.
Mr. Olds attended elementary and high school in Wenatchee, Wash., where he was editor of his high school's newspaper, the Apple Leaf. After graduating from high school, he worked for the Wenatchee Sun Weekly newspaper and then moved to Eugene, Ore., where he worked for the Morning News.
While working toward his bachelor of arts degree in English at the University of Oregon, Mr. Olds was associate editor of the Daily Emerald. In 1937, Mr. Olds moved to Salinas and then to Vallejo, where he worked for the Vallejo Times-Herald. From 1942 to 1945, Mr. Olds served in the Army as a sergeant in the Pacific Theater.
After World War II, Mr. Olds worked for the Post Office in Vallejo for 30 years before retiring. By then, he had already began a tradition he continued for 55 years. While aboard the Lurline en route to the Pacific Theater, Mr. Olds began "The Olds News," which he typed and sent to loved ones in the United States. He continued the tradition until 1999 when a compilation of the newsletters was published in a book entitled, "The Olds News."
Mr. Olds is survived by his son, Michael M.; nephew/stepson, Robert E.; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine; his last wife, Georgia; brother, Kenneth M.; and sister, Jessie Gould.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Vacaville chapter of Meals on Wheels or the Alzheimer's Association.
Charles Allen Scheibly
Funeral services for Charles Allen Scheibly, 78, of Fairfield, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairfield Funeral Home. Burial will be at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.
Born Feb. 10, 1922, in Argenta, Ill., Mr. Scheibly died April 24, 2000, at home.
A resident of Fairfield since 1971, Mr. Scheibly was a World War II veteran.
A avid bowler, he once rolled a 290 game.
Mr. Scheibly married his wife on June 21, 1944, in St. Charles, Mo. He worked as a machinist for many years and later as a route driver for ARA Services. He retired in 1989.
Mr. Scheibly is survived by his wife, LaVetia of Fairfield; daughters, Barbara Howard of Fairfield, Carol Gentry of Sonoma; daughter and son-in-law, Jodi and Robert Neimeyer of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Judy of Carmichael; brothers, Jesse of Decatur, Ill., Russell of Ottawa, Ill., Richard of San Leandro, and Lyndel of Decatur.; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Scheibly was preceded in death by his parents, David and Edna; brothers, William, James, Merlyn, Robert and Leroy; and sisters, Betty Newlin and Verna Lewis.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield Funeral Home.
James 'Woodie' Woodrow Wilson
At his request, no services will be held for James "Woodie" Woodrow Wilson, 85, of Fairfield. Inurnment will be private.
Born April 8, 1915, in Hanna, Okla., Mr. Wilson died April 18, 2000, in Suisun City.
A resident of Fairfield for 39 years, Mr. Wilson served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1961 as a crew chief. After his retirement form the Air Force, Mr. Wilson worked as a civilian at Mare Island Naval Shipyard until 1978. He enjoyed gardening, baking and people. He was also a member of the United States Air Force Sergeants' Association.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Fairfield; stepson, Edward T. Stevenson of Arlington, Va.; stepdaughters, Sharon Blonquast of West Lake Village, Ann Fraughton of South Jordan, Utah; two nieces, two nephews, 10 stepgrandchildren and 25 great-stepgrandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.
Robbieburr Berger
Former Fairfield city councilwoman and vice mayor Robbieburr Berger died of a heart attack Sunday. She was 75.
Berger was the first woman elected to the City Council in 1972, when she unseated Allan Witt. She held the seat for four years.
She ignited the push for an elected mayor, thwarting the previous system of appointing the councilmember who garnered the highest number of votes. Berger, in fact, tallied the most votes during her run for the City Council, but was named vice mayor instead.
A renowned harpist, she formed the Fairfield Fine Arts Council and served as the organization's president. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Fairfield and numerous music, art, animal, wildlife and environmental organizations.
Berger is survived by her husband, retired Lt. Col. Steve Berger; daughters, Dr. Karen Berger of Middletown and Michelle Erturk and Benna Young, both of Fairfield; son, Web of Seattle; and sisters, Pat Morse of Portland, Ore., Kathleen Jansen of Forest Grove, Ore., and Frances Vandervelden of Coos Bay, Ore. She also had six grandchildren.
A memorial mass will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Fairfield. The Rev. Sebastian Meyer will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Richard Paul Borlek
A memorial service for Richard Paul Borlek, 77, of Vacaville will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in McCune Garden Chapel.
Interment with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Mr. Borlek died April 15, 2000, in Vacaville after a brief illness.
Born March 29, 1923, in Chicago, he lived in Vacaville since 1965. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and retired from the Air Force in 1973. Before transferring to Travis Air Force Base as a logistics planner in 1965, he was a gunner on B-17s and a chief engineer on test aircraft at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He was credited with shooting down an enemy fighter from his waist gunner position during one of his 26 combat missions flown aboard B-17s during World War II. He also flew many flights during the Berlin Airlift.
He was a charter and lifetime member of the Big V Showboat Barbershop Chorus of Vacaville since 1967, SPEBSQSA Inc. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Vacaville and the Loyal Order of the Moose for a number of years.
Mr. Borlek enjoyed singing with the barbershop chorus and competing in singing at national barbershop competitions, singing for local groups and spending time with his family.
Mr. Borlek is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughters, Terri Rogers and Lori Nunley, both of Vacaville; brother, Dennis of Oregon; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob of Chicago and his first wife, Juanita, his spouse for 42 years and the mother of Terri and Lori.

Betty N. Jacques
A funeral for Betty N. Jacques, 74, of Vallejo will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Vallejo. Inurnment will be private. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
Mrs. Jacques died on April 23, 2000, surrounded by her loving family at her home after a long illness.
Born on July 30, 1925, in Forrest City, Ariz., she worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 10 years before working as Vallejo municipal clerk of the court for 30 years before retiring in 1989. She was a member of the Vallejo Elks Emblem Club, Church of the Ascension, Women of the Moose and Association of Municipal County Clerks. She enjoyed traveling, exercise, gardening, cooking, dancing and visiting with family.
Mrs. Jacques is survived by her husband, Tom B. of Vallejo; daughter and son-in-law, Alana Jean and Jim Ross of Sparks, Nev.; daughter, Bettina M. Carlson of South Lake Tahoe; stepdaughter, Cheryl Jacques of Berkeley; stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Melodie and Arthur Kunis of Corvallis, Ore., and Janet and Ed Engstrom of Placerville; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Terry Smith of Fairfield and Rodney and Kim Smith of Vacaville; stepson, Kevin of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Steven and Edie Jacquez of Vallejo and Jeff and Helen of Carnelian Bay; mother, Winnie Mathews of Vallejo; and brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Marie Mathews of Vallejo. She also had 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Rod Mathews.

William Charles Avery
At his request, no services will be held for William Charles Avery, 81, of Vacaville. Inurnment will be private.
Born Oct. 22, 1918, in Hawaii, Mr. Avery died April 25, 2000, at Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation after a long illness.
A Vacaville resident for one year, Mr. Avery had been a self-employed air conditioning contractor for 25 years.
Mr. Avery is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Chandler of Vacaville; son, John Bush of Vacaville; granddaughter, Jennifer Joyce of Lancaster; and grandson, Donald Rader of Seattle.
Arrangements were handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.
Cookie Barlow
A funeral for Cookie Barlow, 47, of Reno will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Lighthouse Christian Center in Fairfield. Pastors Eric Smith and Gerald Campbell will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Fairfield Funeral Home.
Inurnment will be private at Mount Zine Hill in Richmond.
Born Aug. 23, 1952, at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Ala., Ms. Barlow died April 24, 2000, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
A Reno resident for 14 years, Ms. Barlow was a licensed vocational nurse at Washoe Medical Center for 14 years. She formerly lived in both Emeryville and Fairfield, and she graduated from Emeryville High Schoool in 1971.
Ms. Barlow is survived by her daughter, Francene Craig of Fairfield; mother, Grace Brown of Fairfield; father Fred of Fairfield; sisters, Shawnda of Pittsburg and Tamika Henry and Irene, both of Fairfield; brothers and sister-in-law, Fred Jr. and Ronald Brown and Ricky and Clarita, al; of Fairfield; grandchildren, Jasmine Livingston and JoSean Snell, both of Fairfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sheila Riley
A memorial gathering for Sheila Riley, 66, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Saturday at McCune Garden Chapel.
Mrs. Riley died on April 22, 2000, at her home in Vacaville after a long illness.
Born on Sept. 13, 1933, in England, she moved to the area in 1961 and was a resident of Vacaville for more than 35 years. She worked as a bartender and cocktail waitress in several local establishments, including the NCO Club, The Acacia Club, The Remark, The Brigadoon and, more recently, Alberto's. She retired in 1999 and spent much of her time abroad, visiting family. She was an avid golfer and gardener.
Mrs. Riley is survived by her sister, Patricia Creer of Sydney, Australia; and sons, Stephen of Vacaville, Scott of Benicia and Drew of Cheshire, England. She also had five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the National Cancer Institute or the American Cancer Society.
