Howard B. Messerli

Funeral services for Howard B. Messerli, 77, will be held at 1 p.m. today at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

A reception will follow. Burial will be private.

Mr. Messerli died Sept. 17, 2000 at his home.

Mr. Messerli grew up on a farm in Minnesota and was very familiar with hard work. As a young man, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his children. He was a master mechanic, truck driver, and a carpenter by trade. He retired in 1984 from Travis Air Force Base, where he worked in air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance, and at the old David Grant Medical Center.

He owned Messerli Construction Co. for 25 years, and built custom homes and duplexes and remodeled several other homes. A perfectionist in all he did, he enjoyed traveling and camping and the many friends he made along the way.

Mr. Messerli is survived by his wife, Avylonne; sons, Gary of Fairfield, Michael and his wife Judy of Arlington, Texas, and Ronald and his wife Jackie of Vacaville; daughters, Patricia Saur and her husband Lyle of Rosemount, Minn., Wendy Dewar and her husband Steve of Peoria, Ariz.; stepsons Shannon Williams of Rancho Cordova, and Scott Williams and his wife Shelley of Annadale, Minn.; stepdaughter Paige Henry and her husband Tom of Foley, Minn.; brothers, Dan and Roy; sisters, Elizabeth and Lillian; cousins, Roy Heineker of Selma; 11 grandsons, three granddaughters, and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Meta, and mother of his children; by his father and mother, two sisters and one brother.

Donations may be made to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, 225 Reinekers Lane, Ste. 650, Alexandra, VA 22314.

Frank J. Montano

A Mass of Christian burial for Frank J. Montano, 48, of Vacaville, will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Father Eugenio Lopez will preside. Interment will follow at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at McCune Garden Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

Born in Woodland on March 18, 1952, Mr. Montano was a resident of Vacaville for 20 years.

He was a 1970 graduate of Vacaville High School and went to Mare Island for electronic training prior to entering the U.S. Air Force. He worked at the Alameda Naval Station and later for the civil service as an electronic technician. He also worked as a freelance sportswriter and enjoyed martial arts and music.

Mr. Montano is survived by his parents, Frank and Guadalupe Montano of Vacaville; sister and brother-in-law Estela and Don Ward of Sacramento; brother Tony Montano of Vacaville; his fiancee, Vicki Meints of Sacramento, and several nieces and nephews.

Robert C. Murray

A memorial service for Robert C. Murray, 70, of Suisun, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rockville Presbyterian Church, 4221 Suisun Valley Road.

Rev. Larry Vilardo will officiate.

A celebration of life will be held immediately following the service at the Green Valley Country Club.

Inurnment will be at the Keawala-I Congregational Church, Makena, Hawaii.

Mr. Murray died Sept. 16, 2000, at the Laurel Creek Health Center after a long illness.

A resident of Suisun for 21 years, Mr. Murray was born in Berkeley on March 4, 1930. Before moving to Suisun, Mr. Murray lived in Richmond for 20 years.

He was a general contractor and owner of Technical Enterprises of Benicia for 30 years, specializing in pre-fabricated building construction.

He was a member of the Green Valley Country Club, B.P.O.E. Vallejo No. 559, and an avid golfer.

Mr. Murray is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Suisun; daughter, Kristen Scott of Alta; son, Patrick of Sacramento; uncle, M.L. Murray of Mississippi; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ruth Fidler Tharp

A private memorial service is planned for Ruth Fidler Tharp, 84, of Vacaville.

Mrs. Tharp died Sept. 10, 2000 in Burlingame following a stroke.

Born in Hooversville, Penn., she had lived in Vacaville for 25 years.

Mrs. Tharp had received received her nursing degree from Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was active in Leisure Town Clubs, particularly bridge clubs.

Mrs. Tharp lived at Leisure Gardens for six years before moving to Burlingame in January of this year.

A homemaker, Mrs. Tharp was married to the late Lewis R. Tharp, a former Leisure Town board member.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith Anne Murray of Sacramento, and Sharon Tharp Hwang of San Mateo; a son-in-law, Herbert V. Hwang; and grandchildren Chris Murphy of Washington D.C., Chip Murphy of San Diego, and Mindy and Jeff Hwang of San Mateo.

The family requests that those wishing to make donations make one to their favorite charities.

Anthony 'A.T.' Conway

A Catholic prayer service for Anthony 'A.T.' Conway, 73, of Fairfield, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Father Sebastian Meyer will preside.

Interment with full military honors will be held at the Rockville Cemetery at 4219 Suisun Valley Road.

Mr. Conway died at his home in Fairfield Sept. 15, 2000, after a sudden illness.

Born in Port Gibson, Miss., on Dec. 14, 1926, Mr. Conway lived in Fairfield for the last 28 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945 to 1974, when he retired as a senior master sergeant.

After his retirement from the service, Mr. Conway worked as a pipe fitter at Mare Island, retiring after 20 years.

He was an avid fisherman, boater and bowler, and also enjoyed cruising the country in his custom van. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Fairfield.

Mr. Conway is survived by his daughters, Zandra Conway of Smyrna, Ga., and Crystal Graves of Berkeley; sons, Patrick of San Jose, Mark of Anchorage, Alaska, and Gerald, Arnold and Jeff, all of Fairfield; daughter-in-law Sherrie of Anchorage; as well as eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four sisters, and four brothers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Walterine 'Wally' in 1999, and his daughter Tanya.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Meghan Christian Gumbelevicius

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday for Meghan Christian Gumbelevicius, 18, of Vacaville, who died Sunday evening in an automobile accident.

The service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vacaville. Father William Feeser will officiate.

A private visitation will be held on Thursday in Nadeau Family Funeral Home. Public visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with a rosary liturgy vigil recited at 7 p.m. in the church.

A life-long resident of Vacaville, Miss Gumbelevicius was born on Dec. 15, 1981, at Travis Air Force Base. A 1999 graduate of St. Francis High School in Sacramento, she was in her second year of studies at the University of California, Davis.

She loved animals and was a volunteer at the SPCA in Woodland. She loved horseback riding, and was a loving daughter, sister and friend to all.

Miss Gumbelevicius is survived by her parents, John and Carol Gumbelevicius of Vacaville; sisters, Stacy Newsom-Farley and her husband Michael of Vacaville, and Karin Gumbelevicius of Vacaville; maternal grandmother Rose Krommenhoek of Nampa, Idaho; paternal grandmother Jane Gumbelevicius of Vacaville; paternal grandparents John and Anella Gumbelevicius of Ollala, Ore.; and niece Madison Farley of Vacaville; aunts and uncles, John and Karla Krommenhoek of Nampa, Jake and Frances Krommenhock of Milpitas, Eli and Jean Krommenhoek of Boise, Idaho, Robert Krommenhoek of Phoenix, Ariz., Marjorie Carter of Boise, Jean and Dave Dealey of Nampa, and Jane Krommenhoek of Boise; boyfriend, Sean O'Neal; and loving friends Victoria Stewart and Shawna Collins of Sacramento and Wil Kinsley of Vacaville.

Memorial contributions can be made to NorCal Boxer Rescue, 9 Pond Court, Milpitas, CA 95035, in memory of her boxer, Velvet, who recently died.

Charles H. Massie

A funeral for Charles H. Massie, 92, of Fairfield, will be held Friday in Hamilton, Ohio.

Mr. Massie died on Sept. 15, 2000, at the Laurel Creek Health Center in Fairfield.

Born Nov. 20, 1907, in Ironton, Ohio, he had lived in Fairfield for 40 years.

Mr. Massie served in the Army Air Force and the U.S. Air Force for 24 years, including service in France, Germany, New York, Florida, Virginia, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and California. He came to David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in 1960, retiring as a chief warrant officer W-3 in 1965.

He graduated from Hamilton High School, and also from LaSalle Institute of Chicago as an accountant.

Mr. Massie enjoyed his extended family, his book collection, travel, and neighborhood children. He was the 'Candy-Man' to children in the Amy Blanc School for years.

Many of the children stopped regularly for his help with their homework. Several became his unofficial 'grandchildren.' Mr. Massie suffered from Alzheimer's disease in recent years and participated in the 'In Good Company' Respite Program in Vacaville and also attended the NorthBay Alzheimer's Day Care Program in Fairfield.

Mr. Massie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Pauline 'Polly'; sisters-in-law Dorothy Massie of Hamilton and Jane and LaVern Massie of Fairfield, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death my his five brothers and beloved sister: Chester, Kenneth, Vivian, Loyal, Marc and Christine Massie, all of Hamilton.

Arrangements in Ohio are being handled by the Zettler Funeral Home, (513) 893-2793.

Denise Marguerite Lyman-Ruiz

A Mass of Christian Burial for Denise Marguerite Lyman-Ruiz, 51, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Dixon.

The Rev. Willaim Feeser of St. Mary's Catholic Church will preside.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home. Interment will be at Silveyville Cemetery in Dixon.

Mrs. Lyman-Ruiz died Sept. 19, 2000, in Dixon following a long illness.

Born March 26, 1949, in Norwood, Mass., she had lived in Dixon for the past 12 years.

She enjoyed doing ceramics and playing bingo.

She is survived by her husband, Fred of Dixon; stepson, Jayson of Dixon; god daughter, Kimberly Bifarella of Dixon; sister, Patricia Downey of Hanson, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen Barry.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

William Anthony 'Bill' Sam

A Mass of Christian burial for William Anthony 'Bill' Sam, 68, of Fairfield will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul of the Shipwreck Catholic Church in San Francisco.

The Rev. John Heinz OFM Conv. will preside.

A rosary will be recited Thursday at 7 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

Mr. Sam died Sept. 17, 2000, at NorthBay Medical Center.

Born Sept. 27, 1931, in Beaumont, Texas, he had lived in Fairfield for five years.

He worked as a bridge captain for the San Mateo Bridge and was an avid golfer, sports fan and loving family man.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Fairfield; daughters, Deborah Sam Carson of Oakland and Wanda and son-in-law Derrick Williams of La Habra; brothers, Willard of Fairfield and A.J. Moore of Plano, Texas; sisters-in-law, Doris of Fairfield and Mary Moore of Plano; sister, Ila Merle Sam of Beaumont; three grandchildren, Renee and Erricka Williams of La Habra and William Carson III of Oakland; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield and Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at St. Paul of The Shipwreck Catholic Church.
