Catherine Mildred Southard

A funeral for Catherine Mildred Southard, 91, of Solano County will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home in Dixon. Pastor Wesley Nordman will officiate. Interment will follow at Silveyville Cemetery in Dixon.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. After the service, a reception will be held at the Dixon May Fair grounds.

Mrs. Southard died Sept. 30, 2000, in Dixon.

Born June 17, 1909, in Vacaville, she lived in Solano County all her life. She grew up on a fruit ranch and attended local schools before graduating from Vacaville Union High School in 1927.

She later graduated from Armstrong School of Business Administration in 1929. A longtime resident of Dixon, she operated a beauty shop from her home for many years.

Mrs. Southard earned her master's license in flower arrangements and was a state judge for the Dixon May Fair from the 1950s to the late 1990s. A Dixon fair building was named in her honor.

She was also very active in her children's activities, participating as a Cub Scout, Brownie and Camp Fire leader. She also helped with Rainbow Girls. She was involved in local and state garden clubs, Sacramento and Yolo weaving groups, Shibui Arranger Guild and the Vacaville Art League.

Mrs. Southard is survived by her children, Beverly Bryant Silveira of La Mesa, Diane Southard Mitchell of Portland, Ore., and Michael of Carmichael; and grandchildren, Janet Cummings, Scott Silveira, Kim Albers, Marc Albers, Catherine and Sean. She also has four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Bryant and John Southard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Vacaville Historical Museum.

Edward Eugene Burkeen

Graveside services for Edward Eugene Burkeen, 71, of Vacaville, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Gustine, California. The Rev. Paul Fair will officiate.

Mr. Burkeen died Oct. 3, 2000 in VacaValley Hospital after a brief illness.

Born July 28, 1929 in Ralls, Texas, he resided in Vacaville for the past 34 years. In 1945 he left Patterson to pursue a military career. His career took him world wide, logging in 10,000 hours in the air. His career as a flight engineer brought him to Vacaville in 1966 with the 141 program. He enjoyed working on and around his home and was an avid golfer.

Mr. Burkeen is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jodee of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Diane of San Jose; grandchildren, Alicia and Claire of San Jose.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cerebral Palsey Foundation of San Francisco, 660 Market St., San Francisco.

Arrangements were handled by Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Catherine B. Cummings

Funeral services for Catherine B. Cummings, 94, of Vallejo/Fairfield will be held at 11 a.m. today in Solano Valley Mortuary.

The Rev. Craig Patterson will officate. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Cummings died Sept. 25, 2000 after a long illness.

Born May 19, 1906 in Liberia, she resided in Vallejo and Fairfield for 20 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Vallejo.

Mrs. Cummings is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Caroline of Fairfield; and nephews, Johnthan Harmon of N.Y., and Craig Harmon of San Francisco. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. today in Solano Valley Mortuary.

George Emmett Gallagher

At his request, there will be no service held for George Emmett Gallagher, 80, of Vacaville. Intombment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette.

Mr. Gallagher died Oct. 6, 2000 in Fairfield after a long illness.

Born Aug. 9, 1920 in Oakland, he resided in Vacaville for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, serving in the South Pacific Campaign. City of Berkeley Firefighter for 25 years. He was a member of the California State Firemans Associate and VFW of Berkeley. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Gallagher is survived by his sister, Evelyn Markley of Vacaville; cousin, Bernice Poli of Pleasanton and Frank of Hayward. He was preceded in death by his wife, Truda.

Arrangements were handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Hazel Victoria Alexander

Funeral services for Hazel Victoria Alexander, 86, of Vacaville, will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in McCune Garden Chapel.

Bishop Ronald Gruendell of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints 2nd Ward will preside. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Mrs. Alexander died Oct. 4, 2000, after a long illness.

Born Jan. 9, 1914, in East Rochester, N.Y., she lived in Vacaville for 12 years. She was a devoted homemaker for 70 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints 2nd Ward. She enjoyed reading, listening to music, working in the Church Library and her family.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Judy Statucki of Vacaville, Rodger and Joyce Statucki of Onalaska, Texas, David and Marilyn Statucki of Santa Barbara and Lawrence and Carol Statucki of N.Y.; and eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, in McCune Garden Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel's memory to the Church Missionary Fund, c/o 618 Valley Oak Drive, Vacaville 95687.

Patricia Kemper

The woman who spent more than a quarter of a century running elections in Solano County lost her long battle with illness Oct. 5, 2000, and died at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo.

Patricia "Pat" Kemper, 65, was a lifelong resident of Suisun Valley and served as the Solano County registrar of voters for 27 years before her illness and age pushed her into retirement in 1997. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was 35.

"She was a very courageous woman," said Tom Hannigan, a former assemblyman who knew Kemper for many years. "She dealt with her illness for many, many years. She was always positive and it was important to her to continue working and maintain as normal a life as she could."

Hannigan said he ran into Kemper's husband, Leroy, recently who told him that Pat Kemper was "hanging in there."

Kemper's passing was expected, but that didn't lessen the loss felt by those who knew her.

"She was an inspiration to us all," said Laura Winslow, the woman who took Kemper's place as registrar of voters. "She'll be greatly missed."

Kemper was a Native Daughter of the Golden West, a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, a former leader of Cub Scout pack of Suisun Valley in the late 1960s, and a former 4-H leader in Suisun Valley in the late 1970s. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially the ocean.

Kemper is survived by her husband of 45 years, Leroy of Suisun Valley; daughter and son-in-law, Corrine and Paul Corning of Suisun Valley; sister and brother-in-law, LaVerne and Doug Machado of Suisun Valley; mother, Hazel Leicke of Green Valley; and granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Tarah and Tim Coffee of Suisun Valley; and granddaughter, Andrea Corning of Suisun Valley.

A funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Entombment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m.

Marvin Lee Nolan

A Mass of Christian burial for Marvin Lee Nolan, 69, of Fairfield will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Monsignor Thomas Keyes will officiate. Mr. Nolan will be buried at sea by the U.S. Navy with full military honors.

Mr. Nolan died Oct. 3, 2000, in NorthBay Medical Center, after a short illness.

Born Dec. 9, 1930, in Loveland, Colo., he resided in Fairfield for 23 years. He graduated from Fortuna High School in Fortuna. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1985. He retired as Master Chief of the Pacific Fleet. He was a graduate of Navcomsta Technical School, Millington, Tenn. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, and worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Labs for 22 years.

Mr. Nolan was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Navy League, Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield and St. John's Catholic Church in Napa. He enjoyed woodworking and his grandchildren.

Mr. Nolan is survived by his wife, Jane of Fairfield; daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Mark Liechty of Suisun; son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Loralee of Vacaville; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Doris of Fortuna; sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Fred Bones of Carlotta; granddaughters, Mary Liechty of Suisun and Alexis of Vacaville; and grandson, Stephen Liechty of Suisun.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with a rosary at 7 p.m. in Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Fisher House, 831 Alamo Drive, Ste. 6B, Vacaville 95688.

Arrangements were handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Oneta Ann Allmon

A funeral service for Oneta Ann Allmon, 80, of Vacaville, will be held later this week in Claude, Texas. Interment will be in Claude Cemetery.

Mrs. Allmon died Oct. 8, 2000, in NorthBay Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Goodnight, Texas, she lived in the Vacaville/Fairfield area for three years. She was a homemaker her entire life.

Mrs. Allmon is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Donald Anderson of Vacaville; granddaughters, Julie Ann Nerland of Benicia and Diane Leigh Bawcom of Denton, Texas; great-grandchildren, Emily and Elizabeth Nerland of Benicia and Nicholas Bawcom of Denton; brothers, Marvin Brown of Amarillo, Texas, and Skeet Brown of Clarendon, Texas; and a sister, Helen M. Smith of Los Angeles.

Arrangements were by Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Luella C. Bresnan

A memorial service for Luella C. Bresnan, 85, of Vacaville, will be 5 p.m. Friday in Vaca Hills Chapel.

Chaplain Keith Knauf will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Mrs. Bresnan died Oct. 7, 2000, in Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco.

Born May 11, 1915, in Illinois, she moved to the area three years ago. She worked as a medical secretary for various doctors during her career. She was a member of P.E.O. She enjoyed playing bridge, crocheting and reading.

Mrs. Bresnan is survived by her daughters, Sue Knoroski of Vacaville and Mary Kathryn DeBeneditti of Portland, Ore.; sisters, Lois Austin of Portland and Carolyn Wright of Grants Pass, Ore.; a brother, James Christman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard J., in 1973.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Harriet Pena

A funeral service for Harriet Pena, 38, of Fairfield, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, in Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

The Rev. Dr. Claybon Lea will officiate. Disposition will be in Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, S.C.

Mrs. Pena died Oct. 7, 2000, in Fairfield after a long illness.

Born April 17, 1962, in South Carolina, she lived in Fairfield for 15 years. She enlisted in the Air Force from June 23, 1982, to May 25, 2000.

She worked as varsity fitness and sports director in the Travis Air Force Base fitness center. She received her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Chapman University.

She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, active member of Squadron Booster Club, and a member of PAL with the Vacaville Police Department.

Mrs. Pena is survived by her mother, Mary E. Witter of Beauford; father, Harry C. Witter of Yemassee, S.C.; sons, Paul J. Witter of Beaufort and James C. of Fairfield; a grandmother, Rebecca Bowers of Yemassee, S.C.; sisters, Glenda L. and Sandra D. Witter, both of Beaufort, Jeanette E. Witter of Miami, Fla., and Marie Y. Gardner of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
