Robert McLennan

By Perry Swanson/Staff Writer

Friends of Robert McLennan are organizing a memorial service for 1 p.m. Nov. 4 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield. The longtime community leader died when his car collided Monday morning with a semi-trailer truck in northeastern Iowa.

McLennan was a candidate for the Solano Community College Board and former superintendent of the Travis Unified School District.

Family members are heading to Mason City, Iowa, today in preparation for a Saturday funeral service, said Karen Bolt, McLennan's daughter. McLennan had been visiting his farm in Monona, Iowa, and was headed home when the accident happened. He was born in nearby Waterloo, Iowa, and raised in the area, Bolt said. He was 64 years old when he died.

McLennan had often visited his farm since buying it four or five years ago, Bolt said.

"You know the saying, 'You can take the boy out of the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the boy?' " Bolt said. "That's my dad."

McLennan first left Iowa when he joined the Army as an interpreter and served in Germany from 1954 to 1956. That experience fed a passion for the German language and helping foreign-language students, Bolt said. McLennan later earned a bachelor's and master's degree from San Jose State University and a doctorate from Stanford University, she said.

McLennan worked his way through the educational system, first serving as a schoolteacher in California, and then moving to positions in Indiana and Michigan. He took over as superintendent of the Travis Unified School District in the mid-1980s, Bolt said.

His students knew him as "Dr. Bob."

"He was a man of the people," she said. "He helped so many people that others would overlook."

But McLennan also drew controversy, as the Travis school board dismissed him as superintendent in 1995 for undisclosed reasons.

McLennan met his wife, Elise Pedersen, while he was in the Army. The two later divorced. He is also survived by his daughter, Kathleen Wolf, of Chicago; and his son, Eric McLennan who lives in Tennessee.

Memorial contributions should be addressed to the Assist-A-Grad scholarship program, said Larry Carr, assistant director of Chapman University's Fairfield campus, where McLennan worked as an instructor. Assist-A-Grad provides college scholarships to high school seniors in Solano County.
