Hartsol Ray 'Ray Barb' Barb
Hartsol Ray "Ray Barb" Barb, 66, of Castroville, died of natural causes Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born
in Elkins, W.Va., and lived in this area for 45 years. He worked as a PG&E garage foreman for 23 years in Monterey before his retirement. Following his retirement, he was a commercial fisherman on his boat, The Destiny, in Moss Landing. He loved to fish, spend time with his family and friends and bowl.
Military service: Served from 1954 to 1961 and was honorably discharged at Fort Ord.
Memberships: Monterey City Men's Bowling League.
Survivors: Wife of 45 years, Evelyn Barb of Castroville; daughter, Carrie (Brad) Jones of Castroville; son, Robert Ray (Jennifer) Barb of Seaside; brothers, Jennings L. Barb and Daris D. Barb, both of Elkins; sisters, Linda Ross and Delores Tachey, both of Elkins; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Laurein C. Rodriguez
Laurein C. Rodriguez, 83, of Monterey, died of natural causes Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Tulare and lived in Monterey for 36 years. She was a retired homemaker
Before moving to Monterey County, and while her husband was alive, they owned a dairy in Tulare County.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Manuel Rodriguez in 1966.

Eula Mae L. Day
Eula Mae Laughton Day, 72, of Fremont, died Feb. 10 in Fremont after a lengthy illness..
She was born
in Salinas and lived in the Salinas until age 20 and in Pacific Grove from 1978 to 1984. She was a business manager and bookkeeper. She graduated from Salinas High School in 1946, Hartnell College in 1948, and San Jose State University in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in business. She participated in various organizations, including Rainbow Girls, Job's Daughters, the Easter Seals Society, Campfire Girls, the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. She loved dancing, arts and crafts and the sea.
Survivors: Children, Michael Day of Grand Junction, Colo., Nancy Cabral of Hilo, Hawaii, and Patti Day and Elizabeth Barr, both of San Francisco; brothers, George Laughton and Edward Laughton, both of Salinas; and five grandchildren.

Vincent Scandalita
Vincent Scandalita, 81, of Monterey, died of natural causes Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at his home.
He was born
in Monterey and a lifelong resident. He was a retired chef with the Fort Ord hospital. He read the Bible and worked puzzles. He attended local schools. He was baptized, made his first communion and confirmed at San Carlos Cathedral.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Rose, in 1997.
Military service: Served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Memberships: San Carlos parish, 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus.

Roy Lee McQuitty Jr.
Roy Lee McQuitty Jr., 26, of Salinas, died of lymphoma resulting from Hodgkin's disease Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center.
He was born
in North Hollywood and lived in Salinas for 10 years. He was a construction laborer with Steve Cepim Construction.
Memberships: Oak Park Community Church and participated in the church's Youth on Fire youth group.

Jade A. Mansfield
Jade A. Mansfield, 41, of Greenfield, drowned Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in the Arroyo Seco River.
She was born
in Salinas and lived in Greenfield. She was a litigation attorney with Legal Services for Seniors and since 1998 served as the organization's tenacious elder abuse advocate. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in political science from California State University, San Francisco and her Doctor of Jurisprudence law degree from Monterey College of Law in 1997. She loved animals and reading. She was a vegetarian and also a great cook. Prior to turning to law, she was the manager of The Prolific Oven bakery in Palo Alto. She was the constant companion and caregiver for her grandmother, Marie Rodoni.
Military service: U.S. Air Force for four years as crew chief, aircraft mechanic for the F4 fighting jet.
Memberships: President of the Arroyo Seco Home Owners Association.

Librado A. Maldonado, 50, of Watsonville, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in an accident at his work in Yuma, Ariz.
He was born
in Coalcoman, Michoac·n, Mexico, and lived in Watsonville for 33 years. He was a foreman and supervisor with Four Seasons. He loved to sing, dance, listen to mariachi music, play volleyball, barbecue and celebrating the joys of life.

Ferne L. Hawkins, 102, of Salinas, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Skyline Convalescent Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born
in Oregon and lived in Salinas for 16 years. She was a homemaker.

David C. Maguire
SALINAS
David C. Maguire, 26, of Salinas, died unexpectedly of a heart condition Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born
in Santa Clara and lived on the Monterey Peninsula for five years. He was a delivery clerk with Angelina's Heavenly Delights and a student at California State University, Monterey Bay. He graduated from Milpitas High School and Bakersfield Community College. He was attending CSUMB, where he was past president of the Pacific Asian Student's Union. He was a stage performer and musical artist and belonged to and performed at the Western Stage at Hartnell College. He also enjoyed making and working with computers.
Survivors: His soul mate, Troy Bonnes of Salinas; mother, Luci Maguire of Ojai; father, David L. Maguire of Modesto; sister, Joy Maguire-Parsons of Ojai; paternal grandmother, Majorie H. Paul of Stockton; and numerous aunts, uncles, a niece and nephew.
Celebration of Life: 1 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Marina State Beach.

James P. Astin Sr.
SACRAMENTO
James P. Astin Sr., 83, of Sacramento, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at his nephew's home in Martinez after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.
He was born
in Earl, Ark., lived in Santa Cruz and Salinas from 1938 to 1950, in Sacramento for 52 years and in Martinez for four months He was a retired carpenter and worked on large construction and freeway projects around the Sacramento area until his retirement in 1982. He worked at Monterey County Hospital from 1939 to 1942. He was active in youth sports, especially Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball for many years, especially in the 1950s and 1960s when his son played. He was a big fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. He loved blues and jazz, and regularly attended the Sacramento Jazz Festival. He also was interested in politics.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Bea Astin, in March 2000.
Military service: U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, fighting in battles in New Guinea, and was honorably discharged as a Disabled American Veteran.
Memberships: United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 586 since 1950.
Survivors: Son, James P. Astin Jr. of Shingle Springs; sister, Ruby Upton of Exetor; and grandchildren, Ronald Astin of Portland, Ore., Michael Astin of Shingle Springs and Jennifer Webster of Reno, Nev.

SALINAS
James J. Bono, 74, of Salinas, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Salinas Rehab and Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Gary, Ind., and lived in Salinas for 25 years. He was a plumber with the U.S. government before his retirement.
