Survivors: Husband, Julio Cruz Ortega of Salinas; parents, Isaias Auina Romero and Guadalupe Alfaro of Mexico; maternal grandparents, Reynaldo Alfaro and Librada Alejandre of Mexico; paternal grandmother, Maria de Salud Romero of Mexico; and five sisters.

Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. today, May 14, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. today, May 14, at the mortuary chapel.

Services and burial: Ecuanduero, Michoacán, Mexico.

Lawrence Ray 'Larry' Sells

Lawrence Ray "Larry" Sells, 30, of Salinas, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. He was a general laborer. He enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball and football. He took pleasure in teaching karate to several children in Salinas and Greenfield with his brother Curtis. He attended North Salinas High School. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at 10 and established a loving relationship with Christ during his life. He enjoyed praying and reading the word of God. He made peace with his savior in the last days of his life and rededicated his life to Christ.

Survivors: Daughter, Denay Marie Sells of Salinas; parents, Curtis and Bensell Sells of Salinas; brothers, Curtis Sells, Benny Sells, Eric Sells and Wendell Sells Sr., all of Salinas; sisters, Arlene Owens and Teresa Washington, both of Raleigh, N.C., and Georgia Choates of Chekotah, Okla.; grandmother, Carrie Norwood of Salinas; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, at First Assembly of God Church, 1025 Fairview Ave., Salinas.

Burial: Following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Rose Marie Ruiz

Rose Marie Ruiz, 19, of Salinas, died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Greenfield.
She was born icon in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. She was a student. She was preceded in death by her father, Jose F. Ruiz.

Survivors: Son, Henry Suarez of Salinas; daughter, Isabella Ruiz of Salinas; mother, Juanita Castaneda of Salinas; stepfather, Pablo Castaneda of Salinas; brothers, Jose Ruiz Jr. and Pablo Castaneda Jr., both of Salinas; sister, Elvira Castaneda of Salinas; maternal grandmother, Celia Saucedo of Salinas; paternal grandmothers, Alicia Courtwright and Trinidad Albanez, both of Salinas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. today, May 9, and Thursday, May 10, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the mortuary chapel.

Evening prayer service: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the mortuary chapel.

Services: Final visitation at 1 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the mortuary chapel followed by procession to St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1702 Second Ave., Salinas, for the funeral Mass at 2 p.m.

Burial: Following at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Memorials: Trust fund set up to help defray burial and funeral expenses at Washington Mutual Bank, account No. 388-4734291.

William A. Rose

William A. Rose, 67, of Salinas, died Monday, May 7, 2001, at Salinas Rehab Care Center after a brief illness.
He was born icon in Castroville and was a lifelong Monterey County resident. He was a local machanist.

Military service: U.S. Army.

Survivors: Wife of four years, Martha E. Rose of Salinas; sons, Mike Rose of Alabama and Bill (May) Rose of Ione; in-laws, Lasconia family of Salinas; and two grandsons.

Services: No services planned.

Cremation: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Frances M. Caswell

Frances M. Caswell, 91, of Salinas, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.
She was born icon in Ames, Iowa, and lived in Salinas for 49 years. She was a homemaker. She attended Iowa State University. She was a volunteer with the National Steinbeck Center, Grey Ladies at Fort Ord, and Meals on Wheels and a former Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed dogs, reading books, playing bridge, traveling, dancing, golf and social gatherings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Don Caswell, a longtime Salinas veterinarian, in 1998.

Memberships: First Presbyterian Church, the church Clipper Club, Friendship Club and the Tuesday mornings Women's Bible class, Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae, Salinas Woman's Club, Active Senior, VIPs at Cypress Community Church and Pink Ladies charter member with Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.

Survivors: Daughters, Carolyn Bryggman of Salinas and Joan Jackson of Placerville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services 2 p.m. June 22, First Presbyterian Church, Padre Drive, Salinas.

Cremation arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Memorials: Visiting Nurse Association, 957-A Blanco Circle, Salinas 93901 or donor's favorite charity.

Sawae Dobson

Sawae Dobson, 73, of Salinas, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center after an illness.
She was born icon in Nagoya, Japan, and lived in Salinas for 31 years. She was a homemaker.

Memberships: Women's Auxiliary of Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 101 in Salinas.

Survivors: Husband, Wesley Dobson of Salinas; son, Bill Dobson of Marina; sisters, Fumi Sono of Osaka, Japan, Chizu Shimomoto of Salinas and Reiko Okubo of Nagoya; grandson, Robert W. Dobson of Marina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlotte P. Roman

Charlotte P. Roman, 82, of Watsonville, died of natural causes Sunday, May 6, 2001, at her home.
She was born icon in El Paso, Texas, and lived in Watsonville. She worked for many years for Holdons Cannery as a fish packer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Mike Roman, in February.

Survivors: Sons, Mike Roman Jr. of Lewiston, Idaho, and Charles Roman of Watsonville; daughters, Rose M. Rodriguez of Kansas, Margaret Spears of Hartly, Del, and Gloria Roman of Royal Oaks; 27 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation: From noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Monterey Peninsula Mortuary, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, May 11, at the mortuary.

Helen Minnie Walker

Helen Minnie Walker, 84, of Salinas, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at her home after an illness.
She was born icon in El Paso, Texas, and lived in Salinas for 48 years. She was a social worker with Monterey County Social Services Department. She was well-known in Salinas for her work with foster care families and volunteered with several charitable organizations. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Derrick Grant, brother, Charlie Thaxton and sister, Mary Jones.

Memberships: Mount Nebo Baptist Church.

Survivors: Daughters, Barbara Bolden and Mary Anderson, both of San Jose; son, Charlie Walker; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. today, May 9, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Mary J. Gregory

Mary J. Gregory, 88, of Monterey, died of natural causes Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey.
She was born icon in Oakland and lived in Monterey. She owned a boarding house for 20 years.

Memberships: American Legion.

Survivors: Son, Eugene Roncarati of Monterey; brother, Fred Calabro of Oregon; sisters, Virginia Dine and Grace, both of Seaside; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation: From 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Monterey Peninsula Mortuary, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Burial: Mission Memorial Park the following week.

Edwin V. Vlach Jr.

Edwin V. Vlach Jr., 34, of Seaside, died unexpectedly Friday, May 4, 2001, at his home.
He was born icon in Tacoma, Wash., and lived in Seaside for 31 years. He was a maintenance technician with the city of Seaside for eight years. He enjoyed jujitsu, karate, weight lifting, motorcycle riding, football and computers. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin, in 1971.

Survivors: Mother, Gisun Vlach of Seaside; and brothers, Stephen Vlach and Rudolph "Ruddy" Vlach, both of Seaside.

Visitation: From 2 to 9 p.m. today, May 9, at Chapel of Seaside, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Services: 5 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the mortuary with services concluding at the chapel.

Cremation: Soquel Crematory.

Burial: Monterey city cemetery at a later date.

Josefa F. Urzua

Josefa F. Urzua, 81, of Salinas, died of congestive heart failure Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born icon in Tepatitlan, Mexico, and lived in Salinas for 38 years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: Daughters, Rosalba Lopez of Salinas, Blanca Urzua of Mexico, Gloria Garcia of Yuma, Ariz., and Irma Bolstad of Burke, Va.; sons, Isidro Urzua of Salinas and Jesus Urzua of Dixon; sisters, Guadalupe Franco of Mexico and Sofia Franco of Visalia; brothers, Tranguilino Franco of Los Angeles, and Jesus Franco and Francisco Franco, both of Mexico; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Beulah Jean Mack

Beulah Jean Mack, 87, of Salinas, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
