John A. Amaral Sr.

John A. Amaral Sr., 52, of Salinas, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Watsonville and lived in Salinas for 52 years. He attended Palma High School and Hartnell College, where he played football under Arvin Smith and Tony Teresa, and also attended and played football at Sacramento State University. He returned to Salinas and Palma High School to teach and coach basketball and football. He held the positions of dean of discipline, athletic director and eventually became Palma's first foundation director.

His greatest gift was the motivation and encouragement of any person he met, most especially youth, which led him to establish the "BR Headliners" to promote opportunity for young people and to further their education.

His hobbies included water-skiing, hunting, coaching, writing poetry, golfing, gardening, refereeing high school sports, and especially spending time with his family. He was involved in many charitable organizations including the Tony Teresa Memorial Golf Tournament and Palma Foundation.

Survivors: Wife, Marie Amaral of Salinas; sons, John (Mendy) Amaral, Matt (Amy) Amaral, Chad (Kiana) Amaral and Luis Amaral, all of Salinas; mother, Mary Amaral of Salinas; brothers, Al Amaral of San Luis Obispo and Robert Amaral of Salinas; grandmother, Mary Soares of Soledad; and granddaughter, Meghan Amaral of Salinas.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Vigil service: 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Burial: Following at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Marian Dorothy Good

Marian Dorothy Good, 80, of Seaside, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula after an illness.
She was born icon in Shamokin, Pa., lived in Monterey County for 56 years and in Seaside for 46 years. She was a retired homemaker and worked at McGraw-Hill before her retirement. She also worked at the canneries and as a waitress after World War II. She was accomplished in all forms of needlework. She was an avid bowler at Cypress Bowl and served as secretary to many leagues. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Good, in 1990, and sons, Kirk Good, in 1994, and Charles Fisher in 2000.

Military service: Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Memberships: American Legion Post 591 Seaside.

Survivors: Sons, Frank Fisher of Las Vegas and Art Fisher of Seaside; daughters, Lauree Christian of Seaside and Shelley Love of Batesville, Ark.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside services 3 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Memorials: Donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements: Chapel of Seaside Funeral Directors, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Guillerma B. Mata

Guillerma B. Mata, 82, of Salinas, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after an illness.
She was born icon in Mindanao, Philippines, and lived in Salinas for 13 years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: Husband, Joseph Mata of Salinas; daughters, Flordelis Dimpas, Pablita Enriquez, Esterlita Meca, Lydia Ipac and Lourdesita de Luna, all of Salinas; sons, Felizardo Mata, Fernando Mata, Ruben Mata, Cesar Mata and Frankie Mata, all of Salinas; one brother of the Philippines; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, June 20, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Mass: 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1702 Second Ave., Salinas.

Burial: Following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Judy L. Pestoni

Judy L. Pestoni, 55, of Prunedale, drowned Friday, June 15, 2001, at Moss Landing.
She was born icon in Ypsilanti, Mich., and lived in Salinas for 30 years. She was a homemaker and shed worker. She was loved by all who knew her.

Survivors: Husband, Louie Pestoni of Prunedale; mother, Wanda Caraway of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Linda Marshall and Sharri Connell, both of Phoenix; and grandchildren, Warren, Casey and Krystal.

Services: Memorial services, 5 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Cremation: Has been held.

Florence M. Green

Florence M. Green, 60, of Salinas, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after an illness.
She was born icon in Spokane, Wash., and lived in Salinas for 35 years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: Loving companion, Richard Grimes of Salinas; daughter, Renee Green-Kelly of Salinas; son, Randal Green of Richmond, Wash.; sisters, Rosalie Pollard of Salinas and Sally Manning of Spokane; brothers, Clyde Beck of Kent, Wash., and Vincent Beck of Colbert, Wash.; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: Family services will be held.

Cremation: Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

John C. 'J.C.' Allen

John C. "J.C." Allen, 76, of East Wenatchee, Wash., died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Highline Convalescent Center in East Wenatchee.
He was born icon in Iowa and moved to Salinas when he was 16, moving to Washington state in 1989. He worked for Kuhlman Electric Co. in their factory.

Memberships: Life member and active with Salinas Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors: Wife, Winona Allen of East Wenatchee; and daughter, Meri McCann of West Hollywood.

Services and burial: East Wenatchee.

Arrangements: Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.

Dorothy Belle Benoit

Dorothy Belle Benoit, 88, of Lodi, died of natural causes Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at a local convalescent hospital.
She was born icon in La Veta, Colo., lived in Southern California and moved to Salinas in 1938, moving to Lodi in 1992. She graduated from high school in La Veta and from Teachers College in Greeley, Colo. She worked for a number of years with Sears Roebuck in Salinas and retired in 1976. She was known for her quilt making and enjoyed being active in church affairs. She also enjoyed camping, gardening and growing boysenberries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Benoit, daughter, Joanne Lake, brothers, Calvin Lougheed, Guy Lougheed and Wayne Lougheed; and sisters, Lila Davis and Grace Young.

Memberships: First Baptist Church in Salinas.

Survivors: Twin daughters, Paula Akin of Lodi and Pamela Gallarda of Brea; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, March 22, at Lodi Funeral Home.

Services: Private graveside services at 1 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: American Heart Association, 1212 W. Robin Hood Drive, Suite 5D, Stockton 95207.

Keith R. Brandon

Keith R. Brandon, 68, of Salinas, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Buckinghamshire, England, and lived in Salinas for 22 years and in south county for two years. He was self-employed as a bookkeeper and owned and operated KRB Bookkeeping and Income Tax for 18 years. His hobby was golf.

Military service: Her Majesty's Royal Air Force.

Memberships: Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce and associated with the Calvary Church of Salinas.

Survivors: Wife, Theresa Brandon of Salinas; sons, Anthony Brandon of Salinas and Trevor Brandon of England; stepson, Christopher Kent of Virginia Beach, Va.; stepdaughter, Leona Orozco of Castroville; sister, Jill Bricthwate of England; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation: Noon to 9 p.m. today, March 22, at Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at the mortuary chapel.

Cremation: Soquel Crematory.

Roland Forrest Brown

Roland Forrest Brown, 77, of Marina, died of natural causes Monday, March 19, 2001, at VA Hospital in Palo Alto.
He was born icon in Sioux City, Iowa, and lived in Monterey County for 23 years. He was retired from the Marine Corps and was a security guard at the Naval Postgraduate School for 20 years. He also was an apartment manager. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Lorraine Brown, in 1999.

Military service: U.S. Marine Corps, retired, awarded three Purple Hearts, World War II Victory medal, Asiatic, Pacific, European Area, Korean service and National Defense Service medal.

Memberships: Marina Assembly of God Church.

Survivors: Daughter, Glenda Anderson of Bozeman, Mont.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside services 10 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Memorials: Marina Assembly of God Church or Alliance on Aging.

Douglas 'Pete' Ellis

Douglas "Pete" Ellis, 83, of Bradley, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at his daughter's home after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Antlers, Okla., and lived in Salinas for many years, moving to Bradley five years ago. He was the owner and operator of his own woodcutting business and previously worked with Associated Chemicals and Triangle Fertilizer Co. He enjoyed woodworking and building birdhouses and prided himself in the work he did and did it well. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica.

Survivors: Daughters, Rubette Champaine of Vancouver, Wash., Betty Fossler of Bradley, Kelly Clark of Westwood, Rita Serafin of Hollister and Helen Bradford of Greenville; sons, Eddie Ellis of Westwood, David Ellis of Las Vegas, Nev., Jess Ellis of Hugo, Okla., James Ellis of Reno, Nev., and Jimmy Ellis and Roy Ellis, both of Dallas; sisters, Mildred Fulks of Redding, Irene Jernigan of Simi Valley and Lillie Maggio of Woodland Hills; his former wife, Dorothy Hitchcock of Hugo, Okla.; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, March 22, and Friday, March 23, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Bertena E. Lorenzen

Bertena E. Lorenzen, 94, of Salinas, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and lived in Monterey County for 53 years. She was a retired merchandise manager with Sears for 13 years. She enjoyed bowling, church work, reading, watching sports and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lorenzen, October 1999; and three brothers.

Memberships: St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church.

Survivors: Nieces and nephews.

Services: Graveside services, 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Cedar Memorial Park, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Memorials: St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, 72 E. San Joaquin St., Salinas, or donor's favorite charity.

Local arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Sylvan L. Rembold

Sylvan L. Rembold, 92, of Salinas, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born icon in Dundee, Iowa, and lived in Salinas for 23 years. He was a retired teacher with Wheaton Community High School.

Memberships: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Survivors: Cousins, Harry Reizer and Dawn Reizer, both of Lompoc, and Elaine Tippe and Leo Tippe, both of Dubuque, Iowa.
