Lena A. Hollaway
Lena A. Hollaway, 76, of Salinas, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center in Salinas after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Tulsa, Okla., and lived in Salinas for 52 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed fishing, bowling and hunting with her husband. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Rodney Hollaway Jr., September 2000.
Memberships: Valley Baptist Church in Salinas and Sunday school teacher at the church.
Survivors: Husband of 59 years, Rodney Hollaway of Salinas; daughters, Joyce Hollaway of Santa Barbara and Barbara Gomez of Salinas; sisters, Mary Jane Fox of Phoenix and Violet Blackwell of Salinas; daughter-in-law, Ellen Hollaway of Salinas; son-in-law, Greg Gomez of Salinas; and grandchildren, David Hollaway, Keith Gomez, Jennifer Hollaway and Julie Gomez, all of Salinas.
Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Ann C. Heims
Ann C. Heims, 80, of Seaside, died Feb. 9, 2001, in Monterey after a brief illness.
She was born
in Alabama and lived in Monterey County for 53 years. She was a laundry supervisor with Mission Linen Laundry for 27 years and supervisor for the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District child-care program Stone Soup at the Manzanita School for 11 years. She was a supporter of the Monterey District YWCC. She loved to cook, bake and work with children.
Memberships: Greater Victory Temple Church of God in Christ, choir member and Sunday school teacher, and Tribe of Judah Anniversary Comity.
Survivors: Sons, Excel Crosby of Buffalo, N.Y., and James Crosby of New Jersey; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. today, Feb. 17, at Chapel of Seaside, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

J.L. Hagar
J.L. Hagar, 79, of Redding died of natural causes Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at his home.
He was born
in Collinsville, Texas, and moved to Redding from Salinas in 1995. He was head groundsman at Hartnell College in Salinas for 33 years.
Military service: World War II veteran, U.S. Army Air Corps.
Memberships: Thoroughbred Horse Racing Association, Salinas.
Survivors: Wife, Geraldine Hagar of Redding; son, Jay Hagar of Grass Valley; daughter, Nancy Hall of Redding; sisters, Ruby Daniel of Dayton, Ohio, and Ann Simon of Roseville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Rachel 'Nena' Montoya III
Mary Rachel "Nena" Montoya III, 17, of Salinas, died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident Sunday, May 6, 2001, in Greenfield.
She was born
in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. She was a student at Mount Toro High School.
Survivors: Father, Arnold Montoya of North Carolina; mother and stepfather, Rachel and Randell Lemos of Salinas; sisters, Veronica Shrauger-Banda, Amanda Montoya, Serina Montoya, Ofelia Montoya, Christina Montoya and Amanda Lemos, all of Salinas; brothers, Phillip Montoya, Thomas Shrauger, Arnold Montoya Jr. and Steven Lemos, all of Salinas; maternal grandmother, Rachel Fargo of Salinas; paternal grandmother, Adela Montoya of Las Vegas; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Earnest Keith White
Earnest Keith White, 67, of Marina, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born
in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and lived in Monterey County since 1962. He was a clerk accountant with the U.S. Postal Service in Salinas from 1975 to 1990. He was an avid Dodger and 49ers fan and enjoyed traveling to Lake Tahoe and private time with his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard White, brother, Gene, and sister, Vernabe.
Military service: Joined the Army in 1953 and was stationed around the world. He was at Fort Ord in 1962 and moved to Marina in 1964.
Survivors: Wife, Luise White of Marina; sons, Joe White of Watertown, N.Y., and Scott White of Phoenix, Ariz.; mother, Gladys Steil of Orange; brothers, Earl White of Orange and Bob White of Oskaloosa; and two grandsons.

Rebecca Haas
Rebecca Haas, 84, of Soledad, died of natural causes Monday, May 7, 2001, at Eden Valley Care Center in Soledad.
She was born
in Danville, Va., and lived in Soledad. She came to California in 1960 and lived in Southern California before settling in Monterey County in 1972. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed dancing, entertaining, traveling and playing bridge. She was a contributor to local charities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Haas, and sister, Dorothy Turner.
Memberships: United Methodist Church.
Survivors: Son, Kevin Haas of Cotton Wood, Ariz.; brother, Marvin Waller of Danville, Va.; sisters, Margie Walton, Carolyn Hedrick and Gloria Hedrick, all of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jessie E. Laborin
Jessie E. Laborin, 62, of Turlock, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock after a brief illness.
He was born
in Glendale, Ariz., and lived in Salinas for 50 years before moving to Turlock 10 years ago. He was a truck driver. He enjoyed fishing and camping and loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jessie Laborin; and brothers, Joe Flores and Raeul Laborin.
Memberships: Teamsters Local No. 890 and also business representative for the union.
Survivors: Daughters, Agustina Lopez of Hood, Guillermina Cedillo, Silvia Lopez and Monica Laborin, all of Salinas, and Sandra Varela of Aromas; sisters, Mary Huantg, Josie Rodriguez, Terry Laborin and Lydia Laborin, all of Sacramento, Henrietta Perez of Salinas, Betty Miles of Modesto and Judy Laborin of Byron; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Collin
Robert Collin, 70, of Spreckels, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born
in Stockton Health, England, and lived in Spreckels for 30 years. He attended Warrington School of Art, spent time in Litchfield, England, and in Hong Kong before returning to the school. He worked in the textile industry in Manchester as a designer and immigrated to the United States in the early 1950s. He was an art editor for 'Quixote" magazine in 1954, worked for Stephenson Graphics in San Francisco in 1959 and then McCormick-Schilling in San Francisco, before transferring to Salinas, where he retired after 35 years of service. He enjoyed reading and taking walks along the beach.
Military service: National Service in England.
Memberships: Alcoholics Anonymous.
Survivors: Brother, Ian Collin of England; and niece, Fiona Kyle of England.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.
Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the mortuary chapel.

Manuel Lewis Bettencourt Jr.
Manuel Lewis Bettencourt Jr., 52, of Gilroy, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in an automobile accident.
He was born
in California and lived in Gilroy for 45 years. He was lead mechanic for Trans Valley Transportation for 14 years. He was an avid fisherman who loved a good day of sharking at Elkhorn Slough. A great weekend for him would be at the cabin he built in Willseyville surrounded by family and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his fiancÈe, Jan Gee, who also died in the car accident.
Survivors: Children, Kristyn Urbina, Manuel Bettencourt and Benjamin Bettencourt; parents, Manuel and Dolores Bettencourt; brothers, Bobby Bettencourt and Lester Bettencourt; sister, Penny Bettencourt; grandmother, Dolores Moore; and grandchildren, Wayne Urbina, Eastyn Urbina, Emmy Urbina, Lavelle Bettencourt, Morgan Bettencourt and Kyle Bettencourt.

Paul J. 'Red' Foster
Paul J. "Red" Foster, 80, of Salinas, died of natural causes Monday, March 5, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center.
He was born
in Salem, Ark., and lived in Salinas for 55 years. He was a maintenance man with Shippers Development. After his retirement, he worked as a crossing guard at Alisal School.
Military service: U.S. Army during World War II.
Memberships: Teamsters Union Local No. 890 in Salinas.
Survivors: Wife, Patricia V. Nathaniel Frazier, 65, of Seaside, died of natural causes Friday, March 2, 2001, in Monterey.
He was born
in Blythe and lived in Monterey County for 27 years. He was a chef for 30 years. He enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren and friends.
Military service: U.S. Marine Corps for five years.
Memberships: Community Missionary Baptist Church, Pacific Grove, where he served as a cook at church functions.
Survivors: Wife, Doris Frazier of Seaside; daughters, Patricia Symonds and Cheryl Frazier-Moland, both of Bakersfield, and Rosalyn A. Jackson of Fort Worth, Texas; son, Kenneth Frazier of Bakersfield; brothers, James Frazier of Los Angeles and Phillip Richard Frazier of Bakersfield; sisters, Johnnie Townsend and Essie Roberts, both of Los Angeles, and Barbara Ross of Oakland; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three godchildren.

Jacob A. 'Waldo' Hughes
Jacob A. "Waldo" Hughes, 21, of Pioneer, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in Sacramento after an automobile accident.
He was born
in Salinas and attended school in Sutter Creek, playing junior varsity football, and graduated from Amador High School in 1998. He recently worked for Stanley Steemer Carpet Cleaner as a crew chief. He loved being with his friends.
Survivors: Father and stepmother, Steven and April Hughes of Pioneer; mother and stepfather, Linda and Barry Prock of Pioneer; stepsiblings, Kristy Garst, KC Roe, Richard Lynn, Travis Prock and Brandon Prock; and grandparents, Verna and Riliey Flowers of Coulterville, Richard Baker of Modesto, Ann Estes of Grass Valley and Ernestine Bach of Jackson.
