David Jose Herrera Sr.
David Jose Herrera Sr., 65, of Pinole, died of natural causes Feb. 24, 2001, at a Richmond hospital.
He was born
in Boulder, Colo., and lived in Pinole for 11 years. He was a general foreman with Bechtel Co., San Francisco for 30 years, retiring in 1997. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and antique shows.
Memberships: 45-year member of Laborers Union No. 324 in Richmond and 11-year member of St. Joseph Church in Pinole.
Survivors: Wife of 47 years, Hope Herrera of Pinole; daughters, Hope Ornelas of Richmond and Delia H. Mapapalangi of Pinole; sons, David Herrera Jr. of El Sobrante, Philip J. Herrera of Richmond and Ralph A. Herrera of Pinole; sister, Francis Carabajal of San Pablo; brother, Benjamin Herrera of Redding; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Emily B. Williams
Emily B. Williams, 90, of Madison, Wis., died Feb. 23, 2001, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital.
She was born
in Williams Bay, Wis., and was a former Salinas resident, moving to Madison last year. She received a bachelor of music degree from Eastman School of Music and a bachelor of arts from the University of Rochester in 1932. After college, she worked at Jane Addams' Hull House in Chicago. She studied piano at an early age and her love of music, teaching and performances continued throughout her life. She was an organist at several churches in Wisconsin and Salinas for many years and taught piano for nearly 50 years in both areas. She was married to Harold Leo Booch, a Congregational minister, on Aug. 2, 1935, and to Mark Lindsay Williams on Oct. 5, 1952. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Morgan and Laura Lake.
Survivors: Husband, Mark Lindsay Williams; children, Lama Kunga Gyaltsen (formerly Barrett Williams) of Seattle, David (Kathleen) Williams of Williams Bay, and Peter (Sandra Esrael) Williams and Lindsay Williams, both of Madison; grandchildren, Laura (David Paul) Lehnen of Rockville, Ind., Sasha (Ronald Whitmore) Williams of Lansing, Mich., Benjamin Williams of Chicago, Colby Williams of Boulder, Colo., Nelson Williams and Frost Williams, both of Chicago and Christian Williams of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

Rosita U. Quiddaoen
Rosita U. Quiddaoen, 80, of Seaside, died of complications from a cerebrovascular accident Monday, May 14, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey.
She was born
in Mangatarem, Pangasinan, Philippines, and was a machine operator with Mission Linen for 10 years before her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mariano, in January 2000.
Survivors: Sons, Benjamin Quiddaoen of the Philippines, Florante Quiddaoen of Pacific Grove and Ernesto Quiddaoen of Seaside; daughters, Leticia Merafuentes and Erlinda Gonzales, both of Marina; sister, Remedios Suansing of the Philippines; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Robert Alton Couch Sr.
Robert Alton Couch Sr., 75, of Salinas, died of natural causes Friday, May 11, 2001, at Mission De la Casa Nursing Home in San Jose.
He was born
in Rome, Ga., and worked for the Salinas Police Department for 11 years.
Military service: U.S. Army for 23 years and a veteran of Korean and Vietnam wars. He served with the 11th Airborne, 82nd Airborne and 101st "Screaming Eagles" divisions and received the Bronze Star for distinguishing himself by outstanding meritorious service in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.
He also received many decorations and commendations during his years of service and retired as a jumpmaster with the 101st Airborne Division.
Memberships: Mason, French National Grand Lodge, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 31 and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Carol Bunte Brown
Carol Bunte Brown, 96, of King City, died of natural causes Sunday, May 13, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Watsonville and was a teacher with the Monterey County School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur G. Brown, in 1973, brother, Loran Bunte, in 1961, and nephews, Loran Bunte Jr., in 1982, and Donn Bunte, in 1999.
Survivors: Nieces, Nancy Spencer and Beverly Bunte, both of Salinas, Pat Bunte of Atascadero and Jane Carvalho of Brazil.

Salvador 'Sal' Luna
Salvador "Sal" Luna, 88, of Sonora, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Beverly Health Care in Sonora.
He was born
in Jupila, Mexico, and a former Salinas resident. He was a machinist with Khulman Electric in Salinas for 15 years. He loved to dance and garden.
Memberships: Italian Catholic Federation and Machinist Union Local No. 78 of Salinas.
Survivors: Wife, Anna M. Luna of Sonora; son, Bob Luna of Sonora; daughter, Bea Perez of Sonora; brother, Lawrence Luna of Sacramento; grandchildren, Lori (John) Quamme of Rawlins, N.Y., Joe Luna and Gigi Barbour, both of Dana Point, and James Hambey of Savannah, Ga.; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Tony Novoa
Tony Novoa, 20, of Salinas, died as the result of a shooting Saturday, June 9, 2001, in Salinas.
He was born
and spent his life in Salinas. He was a loader with UPS and worked part-time as a special-education aide for Monterey County Office of Education. He graduated from Mount Toro High School.

Kenneth M. Ahrens
Kenneth Marcus Ahrens, 64, of New York died of complications from cancer Monday, June 11, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born
in Springville and lived in Monterey for 36 years. He was an organist and musician. He received a bachelor's degree in music theory from Valparaiso University, Master of Music in organ performance from Indiana University and did graduate studies in musicology at Stanford University. He was the former head of the music department at Santa Catalina School. He was associated with the Carmel Bach Festival for many years and was the Monterey Symphony Chorus director since its inception in 1991. For the past 25 years he was organist at the Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale. He appeared frequently as an organ recitalist on the Monterey Peninsula and in the Bay Area.
Survivors: Friend and companion of 28 years, Clell Harrison of Marina; and brother, Will Ahrens of Edgewater, Fla.
Services: No services are planned. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Placement of ashes: Ashes scattered at sea.

Nancy Ann Johncox
Nancy Ann Johncox, 61, of Rogers, Ark., died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Salinas and moved to the Bentonville-Rogers area in 1974. She was a bookkeeper with Hart Motor CO. and had worked at the Rogers Morning News. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Johncox, in 1998, her father, R.J. Moore, and granddaughter, Martha Martinez.
Memberships: First Pentecostal Church of God in Rogers.

Raymond E. Bernard, 78, of Salinas, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born
April 30, 1923, in Newton, Mass. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design and worked as an equipment technician at San Jose State University. He had lived in Salinas for 27 years.

Alice von Christierson
Alice von Christierson, 73, of San Jacinto, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born
Feb. 14, 1928, in San Francisco. When she was young, her family moved to Carmel. She attended Sunset School in Carmel, and Dominican High School in Marin County. She worked as a secretary. She lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 30 years. She had lived in San Jacinto and Hemet for the past 12 years.
Survivors: Son, Tom Gardner of Ventura; grandson, Stewart Gardner of Carmel Highlands; brother, Bill von Christierson of Carmel.
