Brian H. Solomon
Brian H. Solomon, 43, of Marina, died of natural causes Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born
in Providence, R.I., raised in Riverside, R.Is. He was an elevator mechanic with the U.S. government for 11 years. He was a first-prize winner on the Bronze League for the All Niters of 1996, and a part-time DJ. He raced NASCAR stock cars for nine years and was ninth in the Central California Region in 1989. In his younger years, he excelled in swimming and tennis in Rhode Island and was a YMCA champion swimmer.
Military service: Joined the Army at 18 and served initially at Fort Ord, then in Hawaii in 1982-83 before coming back to Fort Ord where he was discharged in 1984. He also served in Grenada. He was preceded in death by his twin brother 43 years ago.
Memberships: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 811, American Legion Post 591 (former commander) and National Federal Employees Union Local 1690.
Survivors: Wife, Sonya Solomon of Marina; daughters, Dawn L. Solomon/Mitchell of Seaside and Tessa N. Spurlock of Marina; father, Daniel Solomon of Westerly, R.I.; brothers, Danny P. Solomon of Rhode Island, Paul R. Solomon of Providence and Peter G. Solomon of Vermont; sister, Barbara A. Solomon of Westerly; and two grandchildren.

Margarita R. Cruz
Margarita R. Cruz, 100, of Salinas, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born
in the Philippines and lived in Salinas for 30 years. She was a homemaker.
Memberships: Madonna del Sasso Catholic Church and the Legion of Mary at the church.
Survivors: Sons, Benjamin (Leandra) Cruz of Salinas and Fernando Cruz of Manila, Philippines; daughters, Carmelita C. Arellano and Gloria C. (Arthur) Queyquep, both of Salinas; daughter-in-law, Rosie Cruz of Salinas; sister, Felisa Mariano of Salinas; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mary Shkahara
Mary Shkahara, 85, of Monterey, died of natural causes Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Monterey Convalescent.
She was born
in Odessa, Russia, and lived in Monterey County for 41 years. She was a Russian language instructor with the Defense Language Institute. She came to the United States in the 1940s after World War II and became a naturalized citizen. She was preceded in death by her husband, George.
Memberships: St. Seraphim's Russian Orthodox parish.
Services: Requiem services have been held. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, June 14, at St. Seraphim's Church.
Burial: Following at Monterey City Cemetery.

Nancy Ann Johncox
Nancy Ann Johncox, 61, of Rogers, Ark., died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Salinas and moved to the Bentonville-Rogers area in 1974. She was a bookkeeper with Hart Motor Co. and had worked at the Rogers Morning News. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Johncox, in 1998; her father, R.J. Moore, and granddaughter, Martha Martinez.
Memberships: First Pentecostal Church of God in Rogers.
Survivors: Son, Byron "Skip" James Johncox Jr. of Seligam, Mo.; daughters, Rhonda (Scott) Rogers and Randi (Frank) Sharp, both of Rogers, and Trish (Marty) Pollock of Bentonville, Ark.; mother, Eileen H. Moore of Salinas; sisters, Shirley (Donald) Fry of Centerton, Ark., Joy (Joe) Barrett of Gonzales and Caren (Allan) Hook of King City; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ralph; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren and one great-stepgranddaughter.

William 'Kimo' Everett Jr.
William "Kimo" Everett Jr., 54, of Salinas, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at his home.
He was born
in Washington, D.C., and lived in Monterey County for 20 years. He was self-employed as a carpenter and was a volunteer in the Coastal (Big Sur) Fire Brigade.
Military service: U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Survivors: Father, William K. Everett Sr. of Miami, Fla.; and brother, George E. Everett of San Diego.

Maria P. Garcia
Maria P. Garcia, 74, of Gonzales, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in El Paso, Texas, and lived in Gonzales for 50 years. She was a cook with Mann Packing. She enjoyed cooking, listening to music, working crossword puzzles, traveling and spending time with her family.
Survivors: Husband, Gonzalo Garcia of Gonzales; son, John Palacios of Gonzales; brothers, Salvador Palacios and Jesse Palacios, both of Gonzales, and Jose Palacios of San Jose; sisters, MaryLou Torres of Monto Bello, Francis Orozco of Pomona, Lucy Lucas of Hoseapple, Pa., and Angie Castillo of Gonzales; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leon Erick Swenson
Leon Erick Swenson, 69, of Marina, died of natural causes Monday, June 11, 2001, in Monterey.
He was born
in Barron, Wis., and lived in Monterey County for 30 years. He was retired from the Army and civil service at Fort Ord and Presidio of Monterey after 10 years. He enjoyed golf and cribbage and was known to be a very good cook. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christiane Swenson, Nov. 19, 2000.
Military service: Retired U.S. Army following 24 years of service, sgt. 1st class.
Survivors: Sons, Micky Swenson of Pacific Grove, Floyd Swenson of Royal Oaks and Jerry Swenson of Pinole; daughter, Armelle Stockman of Fairfield; and five grandchildren.

Elizabeth M. Stucky
Elizabeth M. Stucky, 75, of Royal Oaks, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born
in Dustin, Okla., and lived off and on in the Watsonville area since she was a child. She worked for many years in Watsonville as a floor lady with Watsonville Canning and previously worked as a waitress and in the fish canneries in Monterey. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Worley, in 1999.
Survivors: Husband, Verne Lloyd Stucky of Royal Oaks; son, Verne Leonard Stucky of Watsonville; daughters, Susan Kitchens of Watsonville, Sandra Casteel of Castroville and Sunny Hoffman of Taylorsville; brother, Marion Trantham of Marina; sister, Frances Enos of Atwater; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Abdul K. Noorani
Abdul K. Noorani, 83, of Salinas, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center after a brief illness.
He was born
in Bombay, India, lived in Karachi, Pakistan, from 1949 to 1974 and moved to Salinas in 1975. Before his retirement, he was an accounts clerk and volunteer in Salinas with Visiting Nurse Association, Alliance on Aging and Meals on Wheels. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aziza, and son, Obaid.
Survivors: sons, Amjad Noorani of Salinas, Hamid Noorani of Granite Bay, Mumtaz Feroz Noorani of Karachi, Pakistan, and Qasim Noorani of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; daughter, Niloufer Grewe of Larchmont, N.Y.; sisters, Mrs. Hava Ellias of Bombay, Shakira Mahmood of Karachi and Shahida Siddiqui of Detroit; brothers, Shafi Noorani of Izmir, Turkey, and Shahab Noorani of Islamabad of Pakistan; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Jane Eliza Hartsook
Jane Eliza Hartsook, 82, of Salinas, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Medford, Ore., and moved with her husband to Salinas in 1950 and opened a private physical therapy office. From 1957 to 1974 she worked at Ashton School for Physically Handicapped Children. She graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1936 and was named outstanding high school girl in the state of Arizona by the Daughters of the American Revolution. She graduated from Arizona State University in 1940 and from 1942 to 1945 taught physical education and Spanish at a Japanese relocation camp in Butte, Ariz.
She attended Stanford University on a full scholarship and graduated in 1946 with a degree in physical therapy. She was an avid painter, loved ceramics and stained glass and her hobbies included tennis, golf, sailing, camping and people. She helped to save the lawn behind the Monterey County Courthouse in Salinas from becoming a parking lot in 1992 and raised funds for a bench.
Memberships: Past president of the American Traffic Safety Commission; chairman of the Unification Committee for Salinas High School District; member Monterey County Symphony; assistant chairwoman of the Arts and Crafts Division of the Monterey County Fair in 1984 and 1985; Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Stanford Alumni Association, Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, American Physical Therapy Association, Meals on Wheels, YMCA fund-raiser, Monterey County Historical Society, League of Women Voters, Pacific Women's Golf Association and member and past deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Salinas.
Survivors: husband of 55 years, Burnett E. Hartsook of Salinas; daughter, Susan (Michael) Leff of Salinas; son, Thomas (Rene Pieri) Hartsook of Corvallis; grandchildren, Rebecca Gunwall, Allisal Gunwall, Chris Hartsook and Lindsay Hartsook; step-grandchildren, Brian Gunwall, Greg Gunwall and Heather Leff; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Life: 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at First Presbyterian Church of Salinas.

Leslie Earl St. John
Leslie Earl St. John, 79, of Salinas, died of natural causes Monday, July 9, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born
in Hollister and lived in Salinas for many years. He lived in Hollister for many years where he worked for Hollister Garage as an auto mechanic. In Salinas, he worked for Kaiser Refractories until his retirement in 1985.
Military service: U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He earned the rank of staff sergeant and received numerous decorations and citations.
Memberships: Mound Lodge No. 166 Independent Order of Odd Fellows for 55 years and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers -- Salinas Local 1824.
Survivors: Wife of 52 years, Thelma St. John of Salinas; children, Paul St. John of Hollister, Leslie St. John and James St. John, both of Salinas, and Pauline Burton of Paris, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Bonnie L. Howard, 47, of Salinas, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born
in Brockton, Mass., and lived in Monterey County for 33 years. She was a homemaker.
Survivors: Husband of 20 years, Greg Howard of Salinas; sons, Shawn Smith of Wichita, Kan., and Shane Howard of Redding; daughter, Tammy Howard of Phoenix; parents, Mike and Arlene Decot of Spring Green, Wis.; two aunts; one uncle; two cousins; and her granddaughter, Nicole Howard.
