Ralph Adam Serrano Jr., 52, of Seaside, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born icon in Monterey and was a self-employed real estate developer for 20 years. He loved playing cards and his grandchildren.

Military service: Navy Reserves.

Survivors: Daughters, Lisa Serrano-Leidig of Carmel and Gina Martorella of Monterey; brother, Robert Serrano of Monterey; and grandchildren, Kyle Martorella, Nathan Martorella, Christopher Leidig and Tyler Leidig.

Services: Memorial services, 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at St. Angela's Church in Pacific Grove.

Arrangements: Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey.

Evelyn McClellan Kelly

Evelyn McClellan Kelly, 87, of Salinas, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Hanford, lived in Pacific Grove for 20 years and in Salinas for 58 years. She was a former secretary to the city manager of Pacific Grove, Erwin Dames, and a former employee of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in Salinas before her retirement. She was a graduate of Pacific Grove Grammar School and Pacific Grove High School, in 1931. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Kelly, in 1998, her sister, Alta Louise Field, in 1978, and her brother, Cecil McClellan, in 1959.

Survivors: Son, Marshal (Darleen) Sutherland of Salinas, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services: Memorial services, 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Garden of Memories Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Placement of ashes: At the cemetery.

Memorials: American Heart Association, Central Mission Trails Chapter, 1514 Moffett St., Suite A, Salinas 93905-3342 or American Cancer Society, Memorial Program, 1184 Monroe St. Suite 1, Salinas 93906-3590.

Benjamin Acosta

Benjamin Acosta of Redwood City died Sunday, April 22, 2001, in Stanford.
He was born icon in Fresno and lived in Redwood City for six years. He was preceded in death by his father, Isaac Acosta, in 1995.

Survivors: Wife, Alice Nicola-Acosta of Redwood City; children, David Acosta of Palo Alto, and Benjamin Acosta Jr., Sylvia Acosta, Patricia Acosta and Ana Lisa Acosta, all of Salinas; mother, Adelaide Gonzalez; siblings, Gilbert Acosta of Illinois, Gabriel Acosta of San Carlos, Steve Acosta of Salinas, Connie Acosta, Barbara Acosta and Amelia Acosta, all of Salinas, and Rachel Ortiz of Greenfield; and grandchildren, Alfredo Gallegos, Enedina Gallegos, Gabriella Gallegos, Victor Fierro Jr., Angel Fierro, Alicia Garcia, Alberto Sanchez Jr. and Savannah Acosta.

Visitation: 4 p.m. today, April 26, at Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Road, Redwood City.

Services: 7 p.m. today, April 26, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Jessie Marie Luna

Jessie Marie Luna, 82, of Salinas, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Skyline Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Anaheim and lived most of her life in the Soledad and Salinas areas. She lived in Salinas for 50 years.

She was a loving, dedicated wife and mother and the love of her life was being with her family, especially her brothers and sisters at family gatherings. She loved cooking special dishes for her family and will be remembered for her love and kindness to all.

Survivors: Son, Benjamin (RoseAnn) Luna of Salinas; sisters: Candi Davalos of Soledad, Josie Marlo of Santa Maria and Rosie Scherf of Santa Barbara; brothers, Jess Correa of Rosemead and Pasqual Correa of Santa Barbara; grandchildren, Ana Kelley, Marissa Luna, Clarinda Luna and Daniel Luna, all of Salinas.

Mass: 1 p.m. today, April 26, at Madonna Del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Arrangements: Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Elias M. Marcos

Elias M. Marcos, 91, of Salinas, died of natural causes Monday, April 23, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born icon in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, and lived in Salinas for 75 years. He retired after working as an agricultural laborer for 50 years. In his younger years, he enjoyed dancing, gardening and visiting the sick.

Military service: Four years Army.

Memberships: Legionarios del Trabajo, Sierra Madre Lodge No. 136..

Survivors: Wife, Carmen Marcos of Salinas; son, Michael Marcos of San Jose; sister, Phemia De Los Santos of Hawaii; and grandchild, Kelsey Marcos of San Jose.

Visitation: Noon until first guarding is finished Saturday, April 28, and 3 to 9 p.m. with second guarding at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the mortuary.

Services: Necrological service at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, at the mortuary followed by Mass at 10:15 a.m. at Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Robert Earl Helm

Robert Earl Helm, 78, of Salinas, died Monday, April 23, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Akron, Ohio, and lived in Salinas for 37 years. He was a retired chemical engineer with Sigma Form Co. and retired chief chemist with the Firestone Rubber Co. after 29 years. He received a bachelor of science from Akron University. He received the 1970 Past Loma Vista PTA Honorary Service Award, was an Eagle Scout and neighborhood commissioner and assistant scoutmaster of Troop No. 233, and past cubmaster of Cub Pack No. 5. He received a 30-year veteran award from the Boy Scouts of America for his scouting services. He also was active in the Salinas YMCA in the Indian Guides and volunteer in the Y building fund and membership funds. In 1993, he received an award for Volunteer of the Year at Natividad Medical Center.

Military service: World War II U.S. Army veteran and received three Bronze Stars.

Memberships: First United Methodist Church and active with the church youth groups, Sunday school and lay leader. Also a former member of the Firestone Toast Masters Club.

Survivors: Wife, Shirley Helm of Salinas; sons, Robert Helm of Columbia, Md., Todd Helm of Yorba Linda and Scott Helm of Champaign, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services, 11 a.m. May 12 at First United Methodist Church, Salinas.

Memorials: Boy Scouts of America, Monterey County Symphony or First United Methodist Church.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Nicanor B. 'Nick' Losada

Nicanor B. "Nick" Losada, 87, of Salinas, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Salinas Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in San Francisco and lived in Salinas for 55 years. He was a retired chef with Charlie's Restaurant and farmed strawberries in the Salinas Valley before becoming a chef. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Losada, in 1994, and daughter, Nikki Frank, in 1990.

Military service: Staff sergeant in the 1st and 2nd Filipino Regiment during World War II.

Memberships: Grand Oriente Filipino Masonic Organization for 60 years, Filipino Community, member and present chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7895, American Legion and the Laoaguenians Association in America.

Survivors: Daughter, Sally Ugale of Salinas; sons, Dominador Losada of Yuma, Ariz., and Sam Losada, Nick Losada, Allen Losada and David Losada, all of Salinas; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the mortuary chapel.

Placement of ashes: Private placement of ashes at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Cremation: Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Memorials: Donor's favorite charity.

Tressa A. Davey

Tressa A. Davey, 90, of Paso Robles and Templeton, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Templeton Hospital.
She was born icon in Sioux City, Iowa, and lived in Salinas for 36 years before moving to Paso Robles. While in Salinas she served on the Monterey County grand jury and the board of directors for the Monterey County Hospital. She raised many foster children. She was active in Women of the Farm Bureau, Over 50's Plus Club and the American Legion as a volunteer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellison Davey, in 1985, and son, Robert, in 1936.

Survivors: Sons, Dan of Chico and Melvyn of St. Helena; sister, Marion Roen of San Jose; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: No services are planned.

Cremation: Chapel of the Roses Crematory, Atascadero.

Placement of ashes: Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.

Flossie Bell Blackmon

Flossie Bell Blackmon, 87, of King City, died of natural causes Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas.
She was born icon in Carrolton, Ark., and moved to Harrison, Ark., about one year ago to live with her son and daughter due to health reasons. She previously owned and operated Topper CafÈ and El Topo Hotel on the 300 block of Broadway. She was a Christian. She liked to work outside in her garden and enjoyed crafts, outings with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ray Blackmon, sisters, Pauline Gabert, Alma Patterson, Dicia Rutherford, Irma Green, Lillian Bell, and brothers, Dick Sims, William Sims, Erton Sims and Crandell Sims.

Memberships: First Baptist Church.

Survivors: Son, Harold Blackmon of Harrison, Ark.; daughter, Peggy Grose of Traverse City, Mich.; sister, Alta Thiele of Petaluma; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Whitehurst Grim Funeral Chapel, 429 Bassett, King City.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Following at King City cemetery.

Chester D. Spofford

Chester D. Spofford, 85, of Salinas, died of complications from diabetes, Sunday, April 22, 2001, at his home.
He was born icon in Morgan Hill and lived in Salinas for 51 years. He was a retired bus driver with Greyhound. He was a 1935 graduate of Gilroy High School and enjoyed woodworking.

Military service: U.S. Army during World War II.

Memberships: 50-year member of American Legion Post 31.

Survivors: Son, Alan Spofford of Gilroy; five nieces and one nephew.

Services: Memorial services 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at American Legion Post 31, 14 W. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Placement of ashes: St. George's Episcopal Church, Salinas.

Marie E. Wheeler

Marie E. Wheeler, 88, of Salinas, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.
She was born icon in Texas and lived in Salinas for 59 years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Wheeler, in 1997, and daughter, Joanne, in 1994.

Memberships: Church of Christ.

Survivors: Sons, Bob Wheeler of Redding, Buddy Wheeler of Salinas and Wayne Wheeler of Marina; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
