He was born
in San Jose de Tateposco Municipiode Cocula, Jalisco, Mexico. He was a retired laborer.
Survivors: Wife, Maria Cisneros of Gonzales; sons, Rafael Cisneros Rosas of Soledad, Abraham Cisneros Rosas of Gonzales and Vicente C. Rosas Jr. of Salinas; daughters, Norma Cisneros and Gladys Nada, both of Gonzales, and Maria Felix Cisneros and Margarita Cisneros, both of King City; mother, Felix Rosas of San Jose de Tateposco Municipio de Cocula; brothers, Cosne Cisneros of Chualar and Sisto Cisneros of Gonzales; sister, Carmen Cisneros of San Jose de Tateposco Municipio de Cocula; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Rosie Espinoza
Rosie Espinoza, 47, of Salinas, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born
in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Josie Curenio, in 1994.
Survivors: Husband, Martin Espinoza of Salinas; daughters, Rosemary Villegas, Priscilla Curenio and Sophia Curenio, all of Salinas; sons, Ceferino Curenio III and Martin Espinoza Jr., both of Salinas; father, Ceferino Curenio of Salinas; sisters, Lupe Alvarado, Julie Curenio and Cindy Ochoa, all of Salinas; brother, Ceferino Curenio of Gilroy; grandmother, Connie Mendoza; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 28, and 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.
Rosary: 7 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at the mortuary chapel.
Services: Final visitation at 9 a.m. Monday, April 30, at the mortuary chapel followed by procession to Our Lady of Refuge Church, 11140 Preston St., Castroville, for the funeral Mass at 10 a.m.
Burial: Following at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.
Burton Banzhaf Sr.
Burton Banzhaf Sr., 82, of Ukiah, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in a Ukiah convalescent hospital.
He was born
in San Francisco, and was a former Salinas area resident. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1936. He married his wife, Evelyn Mae Pierce, in 1939.
Survivors: Son, Burton Banzhaf Jr. of Willits; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Catherene S. Langston
Catherene Stracner Langston, 74, of Salinas, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Sunridge Rehab and Care Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Hartshorne, Okla., and lived in Salinas for 34 years. She lived in Morrilton, Ark., Brooklyn, Key West, Wyo., Pecos, Texas, and Stone Park, Ill., before moving to Salinas in 1967. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school to young children, playing the guitar and writing songs. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Survivors: Son, Terry Langston of Salinas; grandchildren, Terry Langston Jr. of Hot Springs, Ark., and Laura Jean Langston of Cordova, Tenn.; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, July 18, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the mortuary chapel. Additional services will be held at Harris Funeral Home in Arkansas.

Audray E. Martin
Audray E. Martin, 89, of Salinas, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at his home.
He was born
in Hamilton, Kan., and was a retired truck driver for R.T. England. He was a caring and giving person who will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ott Martin, Oralle Martin, Frank Martin and Dwight Martin.
Survivors: Son, Kenneth Martin of Laie, Hawaii; sisters, Lucille Martin, Sally Martin, Genevieve Martin and Imajean Martin; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services: None will be held.
Inurnment: Ashes will be scattered at sea.

Vanita May Laycock
Vanita May Laycock, 77, of Salinas, died of natural causes Thursday, July 12, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Webb City, Mo., and lived in Monterey County for 70 years. She worked for Portulla Cannery on Cannery Row in her early years and worked at Betty's Café/Charlie Brown's Café in Sand City, and in daycare. She graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1941 and played field hockey. She met her husband and high school sweetheart in 1939 and married in 1942. She made Christmas and Thanksgiving pies and enjoyed playing bingo. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Noroma Alexander and Aretta Vadna.
Survivors: Husband of 58 years, Donald C. Laycock of Salinas; son, Donald (Joan) Laycock Jr. of Salinas; daughter, Sandra (Melvin) Casion of Salinas; brother, Albert J. Shaw of Silver Springs, Nev.; sister, Clorabell Pay of Seaside; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside services 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at San Carlos Cemetery, Monterey.

Dionicia M. Navarro
Dionicia M. Navarro, 77, of King City, died of natural causes Thursday, July 12, 2001, at George L. Mee Memorial Hospital, King City.
She was born
in Baja California, and lived in King City. She was a laborer with Maggio Carrot Co. Inc. before her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and was widowed.
Survivors: Son, Robert Navarro of King City; daughters, Guillermina Saenz of King City, Guadalupe Mazo of Morgan Hill and Norma Alicia Navarro Coronel, formerly of King City; brothers, Adrian Navarro, Lalo Navarro and Elias Navarro, all of San Luis, Sonora, Mexico, and Andreas Navarro of Hemet; sisters, Maria Navarro of Mexicali, Mexico, Consuelo of Tijuana, and Isabel of San Luis; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Nulfo Picazo
Nulfo Picazo, 42, of Salinas, died of cancer Friday, July 13, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born
in Guanajuato, Mexico, and lived in Salinas for 35 years. He was a field laborer with Vengar Co. He enjoyed playing baseball and watching boxing. He enjoyed attending church services and church functions at St. Mary's church. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pascual and Maria Concepcion Picazo.
Survivors: Sons, Arnulfo Picazo and Marcos Picazo, both of Salinas; daughters, Nancy Picazo, Concha Picazo and Leticia Picazo, all of Salinas; sisters, Teresa Picazo, Reyna Picazo and Juana Picazo, all of Salinas, and Maria Concepcion Picazo of Mexico; brothers, Ruben Picazo, Rafael Picazo and Javier Picazo, all of Salinas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

John Patrick Taschner
John Patrick Taschner, 34, of Pacific Grove, died on Monday, July 9, 2001, at his Marina residence of unknown cause.
Mr. Taschner was born
in Fort Irvin and resided in Pacific Grove and the Monterey area all his life. He was a painter for Craig Hurt for 3 years. After graduating from Pacific Grove High School, he joined The National Guard in 1987 and completed basic training from 1994 to 1995. He loved to go fishing and work on his computer. Mr. Taschner left behind many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Leona Taschner and paternal grandmother,Wilma Bury.
Survivors: Wife, Maria Taschner of Pacific Grove; daughters, Christina Taschner of Pacific Grove and Sarah Taschner of Hesperia; step-son, Ricky Chasteen of Pacific Grove; father and stepmother, John and Jonette Taschner of Comino; mother, Rita Bredemeier of Florida; sisters, Mindy Atkinson of San Jose and Holly Taschner of Comino; brother, Joshua Taschner of Comino; and maternal grandparents, Havery and Frances Taschner of Wisconsin.

Shana Barnes
KILA, MONT.
Shana Barnes, 16, of Kila, Mont., died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in a jet ski accident.
She was born
in Monterey and attended Columbia Falls High School, where she found her place in the world as a Wildcat cheerleader. She lived life to the fullest and always saw the best in people. She delighted in making people happy and bringing her positive spirit to those who needed inspiration.
Survivors: A large immediate family and extended families in Rhode Island, Montana, California and Texas, including her grandmothers, Billie Rosa and Cynthia Barnes; great-grandmother, Phyllis Oakley; three aunts and uncles; numerous cousins; and when she was very young, Ben and Marge Regules, who helped her parents learn to be loving responsible parents.
Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish, Mont.
Celebration of life: Following at the Barnes home, 245 Browns Meadow Road, Kila, Mont.
Memorials: A fund established in her name at Glacier Bank in Columbia Falls, Mont., to support the Wildcats cheerleading program that she loved so dearly.
Benjamin Moore
Benjamin Moore, 84, of Salinas, died of natural causes Monday, July 23, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born
in Sardis, Miss., and lived in Monterey County for 20 years. He was retired from Civil Service after 20 years at Fort Ord and was a deacon at the Bethel Baptist Church in Seaside. He was a faithful church and Sunday school member that enjoyed reading the Bible.
Military service: 20 years service, retired U.S. Army.
Survivors: wife, Geneva L. Moore of Salinas; sons, John Farve of Salinas and Luther Louis Armstrong of Los Angeles; daughter, Helen Holiday of Houston; several grandchildren; and many church friends.
Services: Memorial services 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Bethel Baptist Church, 370 Elm Ave., Seaside.

Carl B. Baxter
Carl B. Baxter, 77, of Salinas, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, following a long battle with cancer.
He was born
in Washington, D.C., and raised at the Presidio of Monterey. He attended Pacific Grove High School and Monterey Peninsula Junior College and received his bachelor of arts degree in business from San Jose State University. He was a retired district manager for Pennzoil Co.
Military Service: He was a carrier fighter pilot in World War II and retired as a lieutenant commander.
Memberships: Salinas Golf and Country Club, Sons in Retirement Branch 56, V.F.W. Post No. 6359 and Salinas Elks Lodge No. 614.
Survivors: Wife of 52 years, Mary Lou of the family home in Salinas; daughter and son in law, Anne and Brian Thomas of Rohnert Park; sons, Carl Jr. and daughter-in-law, Angie of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and David of Visalia; sister, Thelma Sanders of Dallas; brothers, Herbert Baxter of Santa Clara and Richard Baxter of Redding; grandchildren, Rebecca and Karen Thomas and Bradley Baxter; and stepgrandsons Skyler and Nicholas Ramsey.

Bertha Lee Paige
Bertha Lee Paige, 89, of Seaside, died of natural causes Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Beverly Health Care Center in Monterey.
She was born
in Shreveport, La., to Henry Vaughan and Thyatira Lee. She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Pineville Baptist Church in Shreveport. She graduated from Central Colored High School and attended Grambling College in Louisiana.
On Dec. 26, 1933, she married the Rev. James W. Paige. In 1953, she moved to Seaside with her husband and children. In January 1954, she became a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church of Seaside, organized by her late husband. She remained a lifetime member of New Hope, where she was active as first lady and a former choir member.
She raised her children while working as a nurse's aide at Del Monte Rest Home, Pacific Grove, and as a foster grandparent with Operation Shoestring of Seaside. Her husband, five brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Survivors: Sons, James W. Paige Jr. and Joseph E. Paige, both of Seaside, and Henry A. Paige of Martinez; daughter, Zorethea M. Paige of Seaside; brother, Summer J. Vaughan of Shreveport; sister, Vairee Vaughan of Sacramento; four grandchildren, Andre and Kimberly Paige of Sacramento, Tanesia of San Jose and Chinyere of Riverside; great-granddaughter, Rosita Williams; nieces and nephews; and numerous relatives and friends.
Visitation: 4 to 8 pm., Tuesday, July 24, at the Chapel of Seaside.
Services: 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 25, at New Hope Baptist Church.
Burial: Mission Memorial Park.
